It’s a bit bizarre that these guys have been making historically authentic games for almost 25 years, they spent so many resources on amazing animations and yet it seems like nobody stepped up to say: “hey, wait a minute that’s not how bows work irl”.
A war bow would never have been held at full draw for such excessive durations as these. The draw weight required to pose a threat at such distances - to an armored target, no less - would have been immense. There is no messing around to be afforded in this process. By the time you draw the string, you’ve already determined where your arrow is going. Your one job becomes to let that thing go. Oh, and your body is fully engaged - likely bent over. You would not be able to stand in such a casually disengaged manner as the men in this footage.
The developers took one look at compound bows and assumed recurve bows were the same from..... Well if it were the fantasy setting it WOULD be more believable
Well one is fantasy and the others were compound or recurve bows. Now some recurves and compounds were high draw weight but in places without heavy armor like in the 3 kingdoms era china were leather lamellar was the norm or the classical age of rome where armies in hotter places of the world rarely wore heavy armor there’s no need for bows to go past 100lb draw weight. Still holding on too long but there’s a difference shooting a recurve or compound bow thats 90lbs compared to a longbow of 120lbs.
considering we live in a world where in our pop culture, archers can just draw and hold for a long time without any fatigue goes to show that most people simply don't get how heavy drawing a bow is

They stopped caring long before Rome 2, animations were stiff in some of the previous games but they were much better and impactful than what they had in Rome 2. Even in this example, Pharaoh's are much better than Rome 2's

The issue I have is when they hold the shot. Nobody has that armstrength. lmao. This has been a thing since S2, at least. 3K looks horrible for the fact that they don't stagger their action. Looks like robots. Rome 2 is fine. They need to pull arrows from a quiver and fix that specific units clothing texture (you can see the shirt clipping through his chest)
MTW2 snd RTW were the best. Medieval TW2 and original Rome TW were more realistic. They were simulators, not like this fantasy arcade bs now. Shogun 2 is when they started going the arcade route, unfortunately. CA execs got greedy and screwed the original development team.
volley fire for archers is really hard and probably wasn't done historically. In fact it would've been more realistic just to let archers fire as they please and at random.
Like rome 2 and 3 kingdoms the least. Pharaoh has potential just from smoothness of unit movement. Arrow trails still make no sense. Breaks immersion for me as it is very arcade looking. And why they still dont have the option to fire at once never made sense to me.
The games featured here are only from 2013 to 2023. Medieval 2 was released outside of the range. I would do a video for the older games but the oldest total war game I own right now is Napoleon.

I despise those arrow trails. At least I think you can turn them off now, but I remember the days where we had to wait for modders to turn them off.
To my knowledge you can turn off the arrow trails at least in every game after WH 2, but personally I like the trails.

@@YWNA111Shogun 2 has 3 pieces to it all under Shogun 2. One is pre Sengoku Jidai, one is during, one is after. The animation style is beautiful.
