    Very cool video, guys! This was kind of like watching Tyler Hover review a depreciated super car... It's a trip back in time to see what a high-performance machine looked like years ago, and while technology has come a long way since then, this thing's still got plenty of grunt for modern use (within reason); however, it hasn't aged all that well and it needed a little sorting out to be livable again... just like Hoovie's hoopties. 😁

  • @ryant2568
    @ryant2568 Рік тому +114

    With SLI there is a difference between supported and optimized.
    Back in the day when this machine was new a properly optimized game could give you almost perfect SLI scaling on 2 cards and somewhere in the neighborhood of 250% scaling with 3 cards.

    • @gamertechlive1780
      @gamertechlive1780 Рік тому +6

      Yeah back in the SLI increases performance (not doubling) depends on how optimized the game for dual or more GPU in SLI or Xfire.
      Some even uses a weaker card just for PhyX.
      But for today its no longer worth it, today its BS.
      Back in 2020 when im building my new PC and do research if im going SLI/Xfire again and i found it its BS completely nonsense since a single card is more than enough today due to performance generation leaps.
      And the most important part is the support for SLI and Xfire are dead

    It is actually working, if you look at the GPU utilization!
    The thing is, this game is probably using SFR (Split Frame Rendering) by default. With AFR (Alternate Frame Rendering) you can utilize more of the other GPU's, but remember that in the background it is doing buffer swaps between the cards over the interconnect. So the reason only two GPU's are used in the Witcher, is because double buffering is used and the third card is basically not doing anything.
    So yea, try and fiddle around with different frame rendering options to see if you can optimize it on a per game basis.

    I remember back in late 2009 building a PC with two Radeon HD 5870's which just came out at the time. PC looked like a beast with both Radeon HD 5870's linked for crossfire. But resulted in two outcomes for games back then. First outcome was some games did not crossfire and would crash if crossfire was turned ON. The second outcome was game did not crash but it would not put any load at all on the second GPU. In the end I learned it's not worth running multiple GPU's in a computer. You are far better just buying one good GPU.

    • @yeejay6396

      Nowadays some games can take advantage of the feature, but it's honestly not worth it,, even if you get a deal for more than one card. Save your money for one card and game on. (besides these past few generations these cards can more than keep up on the performance end with all the video memory they have) kind of nuts to think back that even 4-6GB of Graphics was too tier just barely 2 decades ago. And our Smartphones have more RAM than a basic school desktop.

    • @Sigurther

      Heh, came across crossfire back when I had an HD 580 (still an awesome card) and picked up a second one for not too much. Was wildly disappointed to find how few games actually supported it. Think I even tried crypto mining on the dual card rig and found it to be barely worth it.
      SLI/Crossfire almost seems like mostly a scam to get ignorant gamers (such as myself) to buy more graphics cards. XD

      I suspect that eventually the techniques for distributing machine learning across a lot of GPUs in the server space will be applicable to graphics, but there's still a significant gap in how those workloads are designed compared to games. If ML upscaling and post-processing can be offloaded to a secondary card, especially an older/cheaper card, while the primary focuses on creating the raw data for that transformation, that might be a niche where datacenter advances can be applied to a smaller scale in a useful way.

    What i'd like to know is, how hard would it be for something like EyeFinity or Geforce Surround to allow you to drive that second and 3rd monitor with different GPUs? Like i know some games have this support built in, but imagine this being at the driver level.
    This would eliminate all of the problems of traditional multi-GPU gaming, no screen tearing as the driver tries to stitch frames from each GPU onto the same monitor, because each GPU is driving its own indepenent monitor
    We actually use a similator at work that uses 3 seperate computers to drive 6 different monitors and it seams flawless

    SLI requires so much tweaking and relies on the Driver that it is pretty much useless. Question tho, did you try rolling back the driver to a driver that was in use when the cards were new? Modern drivers work with the cards, but they do not enable full use of SLI. I used to benchmark all the time and had to replace the drivers with custom script to get them to work with Superposition benchmark. I still rock a 6950x to this day. On the subject of SLI, there's been two SLIs in the tech world the more well known one is nVidia scalable Link Interface, which objectively sucks fat filthy dong. The second is lesser known by 3DFx called Scan-Line Interleave where one GPU rendered one scanline and the other the next, this technology actually worked and worked well nVida stole (yes literally broke the law and it wasn't the first or last time they would do this to a GPU manufacturer, which is why ATI/AMD was the only competitor for better than a decade) 3DFx workers and technology, bought them out and shut them down then ruined multi-GPU forever with a crappy implementation that never worked properly for gaming.

    • @pandemicneetbux2110
      @pandemicneetbux2110 Рік тому

      @@bdhale34 Yeah this. I knew about them not inventing PhysX and basically being a complete talentless scummy lying piece of shit of a company, but I didn't even realize we almost had truly good SLI were it not for them. I fucking hate that company so much at this point and their hardware isn't even that good. No seriously, it's not. Turing was the first gen where we truly saw its shortcomings in full scale next to anything else, since GCN was just okay and really AMD hadn't brought serious competition for almost a decade.
      In comes RDNA and we can see RTX for what it is, which is just truly a complete piece of shit. DLSS isn't even a feature, it's literally a drawback meant to compensate for how terrible RT was that even a 2080ti got 30fps at 1080p with it on running native. So basically no Turing card could do raytracing. It "could do it" in sense of running it below HD quality, unless you also wanted the blurry artifacting disaster that was DLSS. So I literally don't see anything beneath a 2080ti or 3070 as being capable of raytracing and DLSS/FSR I'm never gonna turn on anyway because why would I want to ruin my image quality like that. I have 1440p for a reason.
      If you really want to know what kind of a scam nVidia is just go and buy a thousand dollar card to run HairworksTM and deal with that piece of shit GameWorksTM. All the people buying RTX cards right now have no right to say shit about Apple at this point really, because you're at their and Dell's level. Prices are still way too high in August 2022 for me to even consider an nVidia card and had no idea how greener the grass is on the other side with an RDNA card and Adrenalin software instead. Thank fuck I didn't do that and buy an RTX 2070 super out of ignorance. I'd have wasted my money and been super butthurt about it when I didn't even think about DLSS and was more considering 2070s over 2070 non-s because I wanted to have SLI (in fact I stupidly picked out my board partly on wanting SLI support in the future).
      And yeah the funnier thing about SLI is pay attention to how the 3090 can do it, but not the 3060ti. Why? Because while 3060 and 3050 is a scam, those are going to be so cheap on the used market that you could at least forestall buying a brand new card in theory. THAT'S why nVidia dropped support for SLI on the lower end cards, because they knew that people were simply buying a used secondhand GTX 970 off ebay to run an SLI setup instead of buying the brand new GTX 1080. They of course don't mind if you're doing it on 3090's however because that kind of person is probably going to get scammed again in 2-4 years anyway, whereas the mid-tier and lower buyers generally wait 4 years minimum to purchase another, which they can extend into 6-8 years with SLI at least in theory if not occasionally in practice. Like you'll notice what this guy is rocking is tri-980ti SLI, and not a three card 970 (which to be fair, triple SLI basically wasn't worth it ever).
      I did also discover that allegedly software CrossFire can still work but am unsure of it. Either way, I'm ultimately glad that I dropped nVidia as my path and switched to a 5700XT instead. Now my card and software is a joy rather than an irritating pain in the ass money sink.

    • @pandemicneetbux2110
      @pandemicneetbux2110 Рік тому

      Oh yeah and I forgot to mention that's really really stupid OP. Like why in the hell would he sell off his one 980ti anyway? You're thinking like a poor person who can't afford anything near that, i.e. most people, hence the "sell one" part. If he can afford that, obviously he can afford to buy a new case whenever he wants, but that's not the stupid part.
      The stupid part is that why would you *want* to get a new case to begin with? Literally the whole entire point of the rig is to have that build looking like it is, period correct, and in three way SLI. That's literally the part that's valuable to me. Were he to sell some off and put it in some zoomer memecase it's now devalued to just a pseudo-poverty build. I'd look at it then like "why the fuck did this kid just buy two 980tis? If he could afford to buy two during the pandemic why wouldn't he just buy a new card instead? Why would he even try SLI in 2021 with those old cards if he could afford two?"
      The part that makes it so much more valuable to me is the simple fact of it having some very good looking rare case and even having a floppy drive while running 3-way SLI. Hell, even if he had 980s I'd consider that massively more valuable over the one you propose having some new case (I hope not one of those terrible featureless closed front panels and at least with a glass or mesh front) and dropping the 3 way regardless how useless 3-way SLI is, because it's more the novelty. It's a period correct, completely put together thing on its own. I hope to some day get the useless cash together I can waste it on pointless things like building old Fermi era 3-way Crossfire type rigs using old parts just for the novelty. You are right though, in that actual usefulness would be something like a 980/ti two way if it can work on the games, which 3-way often didn't.
