The Calling Hills
I long to set foot in the hills again, Just to hear a Kea’s far cry.
Or the sound of a breeze, Through the tall native trees,
As it musters the clouds ‘cross the sky.
I would like to drink from a cold mountain stream, And hear the sound of the water falling.
The soft rattle of leaves, As they fall from the trees,
And the echo of Bell Birds calling.
I must go and camp in the hills again, Pitch the tents and make billy’s of tea.
Boil water from the river, With spoonful's of sugar,
And the leaves from a Kanuka tree.
I love to sit quiet in the twilight, As the burning sun sinks out of sight.
While the sky fades to grey, And the day crawls away,
As it drags in the cold creeping night.
It would be good to be up there again, singing songs by the campfire’s glow.
To have tears in My eyes, As I watch the smoke rise,
And feel the chill of the fresh fallen snow.
Hearing tall stories told, By good friends, young and old,
And laughing at jokes we all know.
It was fun spending nights in the hills, ‘neath a sky full of stars and the moon.
Off to sleep in a tent, When the long day is spent,
With sweet dreams, daylight comes, but too soon.
Yes, I'd love to go back to the hills again. They call to Me here in My bed,
“Come and watch with the dawn As a new day is born,
It’s a Beautiful, Heart warming sight.
Come camp and explore In these far hills once more”.
And I’ll go again, Yes,
I just might.
