I believe that's actually part of the intended purpose of this movie, and her character specifically.. In the midst of an overtly religious film, she represents the questioners out there who are not firm believers, but hold out hope that there is something or someone out there that may bring us some form of "salvation". The Christians walk through the church absentmindedly giving selfish wishes, asking for wealth and fame, whereas she literally says "I ask for nothing". The only thing she does ask for is peace unto those suffering around her, and for mercy to the world, after questioning whether or not anyone is even "up there" to hear her. I think her character is geniously placed, and allows for anyone to enjoy the film whether they are believers or not.
I mean, the first lines of the song are her outright questioning or even denying the existence of God. She's just wants somone - anyone to listen to her and help those that everyone else is leaving for dead.
@@kindalllowder3595 religious or not, this film is fantastic. and as a Christian, i love how this film points out the things i dispise within the church. Too many think "what can god do for me?" And not "how can i be better for god?" I too am guilty of doing this. But i still try to follow my beliefs and strive to be better, while still repecting and loveing those who differ. Getting off my soapbox now, fantastic film, and fantastic opinion sir 👌
I like how Esmerelda looks at the crowned Virgin and thinks that she must have been an outcast at one time, and later on in the song walks past a relief of the Flight into Egypt, when the Virgin was a homeless refugee fleeing to save the life of her son.
even jesus was treated as an outcast in his final moments, yet he still chose to love his enemy and his loved ones before he drew his last breath by asking the heavenly father to forgive them
I also noticed that compared to how mary looks at frollo, her statue looks at esmeralda with gentleness but with frollo her statue looked at him with anger
“Were you once an outcast to?” That phrase has so much meaning , especially in the light of the Bible. Every. Single. One. Of God’s Prophets were outcasts. Jonah, Noah, Mary, Moses, they were all the lowest of the lows, and God, brought them up, showed them the way, and in biblical terms, make them in their own way, famous. Our lord works in mysterious ways, i guess.
You’re right 🙌 And may I ask if you used that line that Frollo said in the opening of this movie right after deciding to keep Quasimodo (sorry spelling) ‘Our Lord works in mysterious ways’ or if you coincidentally came up with it yourself? Just curious.
this is such a beautiful contrast... she is crying out to God for the sake of her people, not even so much herself... meanwhile, the other people in the church cry out to God for wealth, and material things... Esmeralda only asks that her people will be heard, and will not be hurt any longer than they already have. The people in the church keep saying "God bless me..." And Esmeralda doesn't even ask for anything for herself, it's just so humbling and beautiful, such meaningful, soulful poetry.
Victoria Tisher It might be drawing parallels from the Biblical story of the two men who prayed to God in the temple: one spoke only of himself and how great and righteous he was, while the other admitted his sinfulness and only looked for salvation.
That has to be my favorite part of the song, and it’s just very impactful because before it, we hear the people praying to God so that He could grant their own wishes, and then that part comes and it reveals that Esmeralda wishes nothing for herself but for the good of others. I’m a Catholic, and I could honestly take a leaf out of Esmeralda’s book.
Catholics are still Christian; the story is set around 1482 considering the purging of Gypsies in Paris and the original book, so this is pre-Protestant Reformation meaning that all Western Christians are Catholics but would still have been referred to as Christians for the most part, since the only major distinction within Christianity at that point was the East-West schism, meaning there wasn't enough interaction to differentiate uses of Christian denominations.
It is really touching how she doesn’t say the Virgin Mary’s name but looks at her when she starts her song (prayer ) (in Catholicism you pray to our lady, and she takes the prayers to god )
Is that a wrong thing to do since Jesus already said He is the way anyone who doesnt walk through him cant get to His Father. Why do we need to pray to Mary but not to Jesus himself
@@alalalala57 The Holy Spirit is our intercesor for that very reason. He lives inside of us, and the Bible says He speaks to the Father on our behalf. Nowhere does the Bible say to ask a (dead) human to intercede for us
It is saddening to know that a movie like this wouldn't be made today, it would be considered insensitive or too mature for younger audiences. But this film shows how religion can be a force of a genuine good in the world. As well as how many warp the teachings of religion to justify their actions/attitude towards others (Frollo). But this scene with Esmeralda is absolutely touching to see. She is not part of the church, yet the pastor takes her in because, this place for as long as she wants, is her sanctuary. The best part is, the only thing she prays for is for the safety of her people, nothing materialistic or for herself.
I watched this movie when I was 9-10 I dunno what’s up with the kids today but this movie was wonderful, Disney needs to get storytellers like this again
Why are kids movies not like this anymore? After so many years, these lyrics and these problems still are relevant to our society. The Prince of Egypt, Anastasia, Finding Nemo, Narnia, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Monsters Inc, these are just a few of the most really influential movies I had as a kid. I wish I could give my cousins the kind of childhood I have.
Because newer Disney. With them, there’s no such thing as magic. It’s people so in love with greed, they have forgotten everything what Disney before then stood for. Only to satisfy their greedy hunger.
@@AKitchell IMO, the current Disney executives are unwilling to take risks. They choose safest stories everyone can relate that usually revolves around family and friend bonding but not heavier theme. Zootopia might be the rare entry that they can take racism issues without being blatant. Thor 4 was the biggest offense for me because they refuse to take the theme 'loss of faith' despite having god killer as villain.
Anyone else notice that all the other people approach the windows of the saints and 'human' characters in massive glass images to pray to, but Esmeralda approaches the round, complex pattern in the glass with the shining light that shows a whole bunch of people in a circle, none bigger than the rest?
Its also associated with the Blessed Mother, if I remember correctly. Like the statue of Madonna and Child she approached at the start. And the central/largest figure in the window they're praying to is Jesus, aka God. I don't understand the OP's point...?
AlleElizabeth A year late, but I believe OP is saying that while the other people praying are praying to the glass that has figures of varying sizes in importance, Esmeralda looks to the one where every figure is the same. They all come together to form a bigger picture, which is exactly what she asks for. Equality is her truth, while for the others, their truth is that some are bigger and more important than others.
Alejandra Escutia Angulo i remember reading somewhere that there is a statue of Quasimodo on the wall on the real Notre Dame. God, i hope it survived that fire 😢😢. I want to go back there again and see it.
I think the best thing about this song is that Esmeralda seems to have no idea what she's doing but makes such a poignant point. She's a gypsy, so she probably isn't Catholic or any Christian denomination for that matter, but she has no one else to turn to. She even says in the beginning "I don't know if you can here me *or if you're really there* " which really shows that she thinks this is a total last ditch effort to try and find some form of hope to follow. Even at the end, she doesn't stand in the center of the light, like one would expect, she's off focus. She doesn't want to take up the center of God's light, she just asks for a small snippet for her people, not even for herself in this horrible situation she's in! She isn't asking anything for herself, she's praying for her people, her kin, hoping that maybe there is some big thing in the sky that can help her out. It's so beautiful and such an underrated song in an already underrated movie...
Exactly. I also love how the Archdeacon is so accepting of Esmeralda, even if she doesn’t exactly share his spiritual ideals, simply out of the kindness of his heart.
Lol no. Gypsies adopt the religion of the culture of the society they lived in and Western Europe at the time was homogenously Catholic. Esmeralda's act is what Catholics would refer to as most Catholic at the time, moreso than Frollo.
Also comparing the stained glass window the church goers stand at which depicts several holy figures as they directly ask for blessing while Esmaralda ends the song standing in front off a normal stained glass window with her only wish being for her peoples suffering to be acknowledged.
I love how supportive the archdeacon is here. He doesn't care that Esmeralda's a rough-and-tumble woman, a Gypsie, he doesn't even admonish her coarse words. "No one out *there* is gonna help me" " *Maybe there's someone in here, who can* .”
Yep. He's probably my favorite supporting character in this movie. A true Servant of God, there to offer a helping hand to all of His Children, no matter their differences.
You know he's a true man of God who doesn't give a damn about politics, given that he outright condemns Frollo at the beginning of the movie: "You've literally committed murder on the steps of Notre Dame. Your soul is now forfeit, so you better damn well repent."
This is what I base Christianity on. God made everyone, so isn't everyone a child of God? This song is beautiful, this movie is stellar, and Disney has my heart for as long as it beats.
@@theeyeoftheyinyangsThe most horrifying thing about Satan’s influence (the REAL one, not the Fantasia version)… nothing here on Earth is immune from Satan’s twistings; not even Disney, not even our homes, not even the Bible itself. It’s way too easy to be lead astray, one way or another.
Choosing to follow a company that managed to make good movies for a while is...your choice. Choosing to base Christianity on one song from such a movie is wrong. Choosing to base Christianity on the one aspect expressed in said song is a huge mistake.
@@SammaclauseGamgeeI don’t think it’s a bad thing though when that basis is on an ideal that is so kind, pure, and nice. I’m agnostic currently but grew up Christian. What pushed me away from the religion was seeing all the hate, homophobia, and prejudice that so many older-fashioned (fundamentalist?) Christians seem to persecute against “Outcasts.” If Christianity and its followers operated like Esmeralda’s character of selflessness, only kindness, and understanding, so many more young people would flock to Christianity and not away like they are now. I agree not judging a religion off one song in a Disney movie but it’s not too bad to ask more of the religion based off of the idealistic ideals portrayed in that movie.
I love this song. It is beautiful, and it has such a strong message behind it. This film really deals with the touchy subject of religion really well! It shows that evil can come out of religion, but also the beauty and love behind it.
He definitely realized it, if only because the Pharisees and Sadducees made sure he felt like one. But yeah, whenever I hear this line it makes me think of how Jesus was just as much of an outcast for what he was teaching.
Faith is what you make it... for some it's just getting out the door in the morning, putting a plate on the table for dinner, making it till payday with enough gas in your car... for some... its waking up to simply live another day.... Faith comes in all forms😇💖
Faith is something people need sometimes. It helps people cope in hard times. At least, that's what I believe. I know religion isn't perfect, but this song hits a nail on the head. That Religion shouldn't be used for selfish reasons but rather for those less fortunate. If only more people saw it that way.
HitsugiNerd Yeah. Like I said, I don't believe in god, but I don't blame all of societies problems on religion and I don't scorn those who do follow religion. I know a lot of people who are religious and they are the most caring out there.
556deltawolf That's a very open mind to have. And I thank you for thinking that. I can't tell you how many times I was attacked for being religious. You are a good person. :)
This song show both the merits and flaws in religion. It can grant hope, peace and strength to those who can't find it anywhere else, but it can also give a sense of entitlement and false superiority to those who seek that. Regardless of any truth that a religion may hold, man can either use it to become better people, or let themselves be corrupted. For such is the nature of man.
Yep nobody makes em like this anymore. Esmarelda is one of my favorite characters from disney. She sets a good exampel for children to be kind, look past apperances and be independant and strong. The only other coupel girls from disney that did this was Pocahontas and Tiana.
YES! Specifically about how the entirely justified outpouring of support for restoring the cathedral needs to be matched by efforts to relieve human suffering for the Esmereldas of the world.
I'm christian and i absolutely agree with that. I can no longer see true evangelism among common church community services. When i look into the mirror, i began asking who i truly am as a Christian if ever i was one of them or not!
I love the powerful message this song sends. All the well-off people in that church making trivial requests for wealth and glory, and they think they're better than the one in there asking for help on behalf of others. They even kick Quasi out when they see him because they don't think he's "worthy" of setting foot in that place. It's so sad, true and infuriating all at once.
This movie is very accurate for the time period it was set in (more than most others). The Church had become a corrupt place filled with people like Frollo, and most prayers offered by the people were often only for that person's personal gain. The Church was often closed off from the common people like the gypsies, and so they didn't know if there was truly someone looking out for them. Beautiful song as well, I think Esmeralda is my favorite Disney almost-princess.
This reminds me a lot of the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector from Luke 18. The Pharisee, the religious man was vain and arrogant and prayed out loud so people could hear his "piety." The tax collector, a person hated by society due to his corruptness, prayed for forgiveness out of a broken and humble heart. It's not an exact parallel, but it still made me compare the two. The people here are only praying for worldly things to further themselves. The outcast Esmeralda is praying only for the protection of her people and nothing for herself. And that's one of many things I really appreciate about this movie.
I think it would be an even greater parallel if you consider Frollo to be the Pharisee later, when he prays during "Hellfire." While all the other priests are praying the "Confiteor" as a gesture of penitence, Frollo is preoccupied with praising himself and proclaiming how proud he is of being above the "common vulgar weak licentious crowd." And during the song, Frollo continues praying to the Virgin Mary about how "righteous" he is and how is the paragon of virtue, who deserves her praise. When he confesses to Mary about his desire to force himself on Esmeralda, he knows it is depraved, but tries everything he can to shift the blame to everything around him, saying how could the witch, Satan, and God himself all do this to him, the "perfect" human being.
This is one of my favorite Disney songs of all time. I watched this movie for the first time last night and it just blows so many other Disney movies out the water. Esmeralda is just such a strong character and this song means so much to me as a Baptist and it's pure message that is universal to non-believers as well. It's just so powerful because look at all the others who already have everything that God could have given them praying for wealth and fame and then look at her. So honest and straight from the heart only asking for justice and fair treatment for those who are different. It just applies to the world on so many levels. I think it would be hard for anyone not to connect with this song.
Bless you so much for being a good example of a Christian. I'm a former Christian myself who left the church for personal reasons, but one thing I do think that religion does for people is inspire them to be good. This song perfectly encapsulates what a Christian should be: selfless and caring for those who are less fortunate or persecuted.

This song juxtaposed against Frollo's song about his lust for Esmerelda is amazing. Rather heavy handed for a Disney show (😳) but still amazing. It just goes to show that sometimes the message of selfless, universal love isn't always carried by those who claim to have God in their lives.
Probably the most beautiful prayer/song I ever heard. It's so unselfish, sweet, and beautiful. I wish that everyone could feel this way and help one another out especially those in need. 😘 💋
+Henz Carl Tupas IKR?!!! 😩 And that's just sad, because Esmeralda is one of the best and strongest characters out there. May we strive to be like her.🙏🏼
The imagery/animation of those melting candles is strangely peaceful, I can't explain it, but, they (melting candles in general) just seem so...calming.
+IamDragonFury Of course it's calm: according to the plot, Esmeralda got trapped in the Notre Dame where she would have to spend many hours or days in a state of boredom - if nothing were to happen, of course. The producers made this scene very calm and soothing to create an enormous contrast with the follow-up "hellfire" scene.
I'm an atheist, yet I cried upon listening to this song and learning the meaning behind it. This song is just an example showing how people, who were just like us albeit in a different time period, lived their lives and how they coped through things.
As a Christian, this song resonated with me. I find myself an outcast too, I tend to be misunderstood by my peers due to just being different compared to everyone else. I be myself and they find me as weird. Not only that, but I’m a part of the LGBT community. But even so, I know I can get by with the strength God has given and will continue to give me. But other people who are not Christians need help - not necessarily to reform them, but so that their problems and discriminations can be quelled. If they DO end up becoming Christian, it’s an added bonus. But the goal isn’t reformation. It’s accepting and respecting each other and making the world a better place for everyone. God loves all of His children, even those who don’t believe in Him. “I ask for nothing, I can get by. But I know so many less lucky than I. Please help my people, the poor and down-trod. I thought we all were the children of God.”
Also, as an aside note, Christians were outcasts, once upon a time. Countless people were persecuted and stoned just for being Christian. Look at people like Stephen and Paul. Stephen was (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) the first martyr in Christian history. Paul was also in jail along with Silas for believing in God. And Paul was also persecuted near the end of his life. The way I see it, shouldn’t Christians and the LGBT community (among other minorities) get along from that fact alone? The persecuted shouldn’t be persecuting others for the same reason that they were persecuted!
You know, saying you're part of the LGBT community doesn't mean anything in the eyes of God. Communities are created and destroyed millions of times before God. What this song is trying to teach is NOT to ask for things to be better for yourself. Claiming what community you're part of misses the entire purpose of this song: to ask for God's mercy and grace to be bestowed on ALL of the less fortunate, REGARDLESS of their orientation in any capacity. Forget about what you're part of, focus on what you need to do with your life to help the outcasts. I hope you don't take this the wrong way.

But don't misunderstand what God says, you are loved by God but also acknowledge your sins, whether it is pride, greed, cussing, gay, porn, etc. surrender all of this to God, because we cannot be in sin and still love God the bible calls that liars. I love you and God loves you and I pray you break out from the decietfulness of the LGBT. God bless.
This song is so beautiful. While I am not religious in the slightest this song does make me think. I believe it was Dumbledore who said that the two things man asks for is life and riches. As a race we are selfish creatures and quick to point out those who do not belong.
Humanity asserts itself as judge of others who are all really in the same boat as they. In the case of religion, people recognize God as judge, and therefor open their eyes to life's true pleasures and missions.
I doubt that atheists feel less pleasure or purpose. I don't even see the connection between those and judging people. It's not like I spent my whole day for people to judge.
Esmarelda is one of the best Disney Protagonists ever. She's beautiful, kind, caring, sassy and just amazing. She was the only one who helped Quazi when no one else would. She also has an amazing voice
One of the special qualities of this song is its power. What makes it so powerful is the humbleness of this prayer and how simple it is. Also, this is a great example of how to start a prayer if people don't know how. Esmarelda is literally speaking to God from her heart and opening it to Him. All in all, this a MAGNIFICENT song, ballad and prayer.
This song always makes me think of my grandparents, especially my grandmother ❤ it’s so beaotful and the message of this song is the best of it in my opinion. Her selflessness, her love for her people, is more important then herself, and that god love us all, children of god.
This song and movie were amazing! I was an Atheist when I saw this movie for the first time and this song gave me goosebumps, but the lyrics never offended me. Now many years later and getting saved as a born again Christian, I refer to this song as a symbol of what made me have a change of heart by showing compassion to those who were dealt a bad hand in life. Thank you for the awesome memories and inspiring message, Walt Disney Company!
+iristhevampiress really? I find that hard to believe. Sorry don't mean to internet fight but usually if you are an atheist you go by the evidence not by the feels. You can still show compassion to those who were dealt a bad hand in life and be an atheist. Sorry if that sounds judgmental. I'm an atheist and this is one of my favorite Disney songs/ movies. I just find it more bittersweet, because Esmeralda who may not follow that faith has better morals than the ones asking for wealth who claim to have that faith.
You went by "the feels" a lot in your comment even though you yourself claim that an atheist should go by evidence, the person didn't explain how and why he/she became a Christian to begin with. Saying how you're bittersweet about this scene is something that an atheist shouldn't be doing if you're going by your world view either, your incoherence is too much present in your comment.
This is the most touching prayer i have ever heard. T__T i feel so ashamed that my prayers are just like the people in the video asking for wealth, fame, glory to shine on my name, love i can possess, or God and His angels to bless me. i always pray for what i need and nothing else. When i heard she said, " i ask for nothing..." tears dropped from my eyes. i truly believe it's the prayer that God would listen to. God our Father would love to give an ear to her words because her prayer is just the will from the heart of God. And i pray that we, children of God, would all say the prayer from our hearts someday. And if we all could pray a prayer like this, i think our world would be totally different forever......
I definitely felt something touch me in the heart because Esmeralda actually prayed(sang) from her heart to ask God to help her people who have been treated as outcasts. Now this is heart felt humility and song from the heart, that's what true worship should be, from the heart to reach out to the outcasts, even gypsies. So many religious figures like Frollo misuse it for evil and hatred but Esmeralda is definitely different because she has the heart.
I’m literally broken into pieces for everything that is happening right now in Paris. This song represents in a perfect way what Notre Dame might have seen in many centuries of history and time.
I've always been inspired since rewatching this movie as an adult and appreciating it the moment where she's moving against the flow of the crowd. While everyone else asks for themselves, she stands apart. If you don't think what your church is doing is right, *stand out.* Even if you're the only one, others will see.
Often times when I listen to this song, I feel like I’m a church and I’m offering my prayer intentions to God. And sometimes I get the feeling that God isn’t hearing my prayers but I cannot give up.
Going through a hard time right now. Grew up watching this movie I had to come back to this song I know it’s just a movie but it’s a very touching song
I don't believe in the Christian God, but songs like these make me really appreciate religion. Before it turned into a polemic and a war of beliefs, religion existed to bring peace of mind and teachings to the people. I have a great respect for it, and those who can appreciate beliefs without being overzealous or intolerant.
True. I might sound ignorant here but I believe God,but I do have the respect for Religion sometimes but nowadays I felt like it doesn't seem that good anymore,It's very sad for this entire world.
I think the problem is it works great on a small scale with good people. When it gets bigger and more and more people get involved, there are ever so many more opportunities for terrible people or blatant stupidity to get involved and so much more pressure not to try to stop those things in case it breaks the whole process. Happens with everything humans do, sadly.
I am technically a Christian, but really mostly by name. I am disgusted by both Christianity amd Islam these days, and I wish people would stop spoiling such beautiful twachings with their seed of mindless hatred.
Everything about this song is amazing. Even though everyone is praying for themselves versus emeralda's selfless prayer, it's about longing primal need. The woman that asks for love to possess is just so raw. We never see her again but i remember her the most. Absolute raw, human need.
Well now America has taken the plunge. Anyone with the SLIGHTEST disadvantage or disability is now an outcast. Countless people are going to suffer and die. Come Lord Jesus. There is not enough good on this planet to overcome evil. Fulfill your promise to deliver us.
RoyOskid The gyspy way of life can be taken by anyone, whether believer or not. The fact that Esmeralda, herself not technically a believer, is asking God for assistance shows the enduring presence of religious faith. People turn to religion for help in doing things they otherwise couldn't do themselves. People also turn to religion for the thought of a happiness beyond our mortal lives (the idea that we all will meet those loved ones who've gone before us in the end).
Lolitathefrenchfry I'm an atheist but I think it's dumb to dislike something just because it involves religion. You can't deny that religion has has a major effect on our society and culture, and there are absolutely BEAUTIFUL songs and artwork out there that involve religion.
I just noticed this when she says “ please help my people the poor and downtrodden” on their background their are four images showing Jesus life from the the flight to Egypt to his baptism. I wonder if that was on purpose.
KaRue 3 Exactly. Compare minister Claude Frollo to Mr. Rogers. Both believers, except one is cruelly wicked yet thinks his attempt at mass genocide of an entire group (in this case, gypsies) is for the better good, whereas the other always strove to help everyone, especially the unfortunate and children. As the religious song sayeth, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my people that you do unto me". In this case, _God_ *DID* _help the outcasts_ after all, because when Frollo commanded his men to seize Notre Dame herself (as the Arch Deacon told Frollo, "I will NOT tolerate this assault upon the house of God"), the magical gargoyles that Quasimodo talked to came to life yet again and assisted the bell-ringer in beating back Frollo's soldiers. Even when it came down to just Quasimodo and Esmeralda verses Frollo, Phoebus came in to make the save for Quasi, just as both he and Frollo were falling. In the end, Frollo sealed his own fate by quoting scripture when he himself committed grievous sins against humanity. In a sense, the "eyes of Notre Dame" (God) had the gargoyle give way (since gargoyles are placed on the top of churches to ward off evil, yet some evil might sneak in anyway, just as Frollo had done, claiming to do his wicked deeds in the name of God), sending Frollo to Hell (his firey demise).
This song never gets old. 23 years later, and I'm still listening to it on repeat. The feeling of being a Christian outcast really resonated with me for a while.
"Yes i know I'm outcast ,I should not speak to you!" You wrong! ,the God listen to everyone even these who bad because his love and mercy really bigger

“Were you once an outcast to?”
That phrase has so much meaning , especially in the light of the Bible. Every. Single. One. Of God’s Prophets were outcasts. Jonah, Noah, Mary, Moses, they were all the lowest of the lows, and God, brought them up, showed them the way, and in biblical terms, make them in their own way, famous. Our lord works in mysterious ways, i guess.
💯
You’re right 🙌
And may I ask if you used that line that Frollo said in the opening of this movie right after deciding to keep Quasimodo (sorry spelling) ‘Our Lord works in mysterious ways’ or if you coincidentally came up with it yourself? Just curious.
@@Victor-07-04 It’s a pretty common thing to say amongst Christians, though I can't speak for op.
@@Victor-07-04a lot of biblical discussion revolves around how Jesus specifically hung out with outcasts and people that were different.
Ummm I wouldn't exactly call being raised in the cradle of privilege "being an outcast".... Moses had a pretty good life until God found him....
this is such a beautiful contrast... she is crying out to God for the sake of her people, not even so much herself... meanwhile, the other people in the church cry out to God for wealth, and material things... Esmeralda only asks that her people will be heard, and will not be hurt any longer than they already have. The people in the church keep saying "God bless me..." And Esmeralda doesn't even ask for anything for herself, it's just so humbling and beautiful, such meaningful, soulful poetry.
Exactly.
Kailyn Operty She is so great :D
Quan Dang Very.
The ironic thing is a lot of people in Europe are still to this day very racist against the Roma people aka Gypsies.
Victoria Tisher It might be drawing parallels from the Biblical story of the two men who prayed to God in the temple: one spoke only of himself and how great and righteous he was, while the other admitted his sinfulness and only looked for salvation.
2:07 "I ask for nothing, I can get by. But I know so many less lucky than I."
I don't know why but that line always struck a chord with me.
Me too
Cause of how selfless of a prayer it is
Because it is a sad reality that we live in. 😢
I've always liked the Archdeacon. His faith was that of pure faith, not overzealousness. He lives by this law of God: "Love thy neighbor as thyself."
Like an archdeacon should be.
kryptonianpowers I always thought he was used to show just how drastic the difference was between Frollo's idea of Christianity, vs. WHAT it truly is.
Son of Hecate Like a true Christian.
Joshua Fogg actually, I think that's a catholic church meaning he's a catholic priest
@@hanhoang7883 Mary intercedes for us. Like any person or friend or family would.
@Will N But what if you alone can't go? That is what intercession means. An advocate that may reach on your behalf.
@@alalalala57 The Holy Spirit is our intercesor for that very reason. He lives inside of us, and the Bible says He speaks to the Father on our behalf. Nowhere does the Bible say to ask a (dead) human to intercede for us
I find a little bit amusing that you both are trying to solve centuries of theological discussion in a youtube comment of a disney movie
Consider that this is based on classic literature and this movie is considered flop by Disney's standard due to heavy theme.
@@zitronentee Disney's standard needs a rework, then. This movie may be dark, but it's really good.

+Ellori Eton that round, complex pattern is called the north transept rose. It's actually one of the most famous things about Notre Dame.
Its also associated with the Blessed Mother, if I remember correctly. Like the statue of Madonna and Child she approached at the start.
And the central/largest figure in the window they're praying to is Jesus, aka God. I don't understand the OP's point...?
AlleluiaElizabeth Me neither though, but you are right.
Actually Romani people can have whatever religion beliefs depending on the country they live in
Notice her colors also make her blend in. She's one with a community that she wants to help.
"No one out *there* is gonna help me"
" *Maybe there's someone in here, who can* .”
Older Disney has mine. Newer Disney can’t touch it with a 100 foot pole.
Remember, There is no power in religion itself. Religion is devotion. One can be devoted to anything.

"Were you an outcast too?" One of my favorite lines because Jesus was an outcast also so without realizing it He can relate to her
Sarah Howard We can all relate to Him, because He lived as and died as one of us.
He definitely realized it, if only because the Pharisees and Sadducees made sure he felt like one. But yeah, whenever I hear this line it makes me think of how Jesus was just as much of an outcast for what he was teaching.
Yes. This. John 3:17 reminds us He has come not to condemn but to save the world. Yet people only remember John 3:16
Notice how Esmeralda is the only one in the entire cathedral who does not ask for anything for herself!
thats the point of the song
Faith is what you make it... for some it's just getting out the door in the morning, putting a plate on the table for dinner, making it till payday with enough gas in your car... for some... its waking up to simply live another day.... Faith comes in all forms😇💖
That shot of Esmerelda walking between the candles still gives me shivers to this day, it's so beautiful and soft
Thing is, I'm an agnostic atheist myself but I love this song and while I may not believe in god, I do understand why some people do look to him.

That's a very open mind to have. And I thank you for thinking that. I can't tell you how many times I was attacked for being religious. You are a good person. :)
Same here. I dont believe in god but this song is beautiful and why some may look to him or her in time of need.

This song is a giant middle finger to the prosperity gospel and all the evangelical churches who preach it
so true, it's one of the best disney songs so far cause it still feels real. the movie / song is from 96 and nothing really changed yet
the dignity will never be voulgar
I'm christian and i absolutely agree with that. I can no longer see true evangelism among common church community services. When i look into the mirror, i began asking who i truly am as a Christian if ever i was one of them or not!
This whole movie is a middle finger
I so hate that type of preaching. It's the exact opposite of what the whole Bible teaches, specifically the book of Job
I think it would be an even greater parallel if you consider Frollo to be the Pharisee later, when he prays during "Hellfire." While all the other priests are praying the "Confiteor" as a gesture of penitence, Frollo is preoccupied with praising himself and proclaiming how proud he is of being above the "common vulgar weak licentious crowd."
And during the song, Frollo continues praying to the Virgin Mary about how "righteous" he is and how is the paragon of virtue, who deserves her praise. When he confesses to Mary about his desire to force himself on Esmeralda, he knows it is depraved, but tries everything he can to shift the blame to everything around him, saying how could the witch, Satan, and God himself all do this to him, the "perfect" human being.
I couldn't have said it better myself. :)

I couldn't agree more.
I find that when there's a tragedy of any kind, this song connects with that feeling almost perfectly. #PrayForOrlando

This song juxtaposed against Frollo's song about his lust for Esmerelda is amazing. Rather heavy handed for a Disney show (😳) but still amazing.
It just goes to show that sometimes the message of selfless, universal love isn't always carried by those who claim to have God in their lives.

The imagery/animation of those melting candles is strangely peaceful, I can't explain it, but, they (melting candles in general) just seem so...calming.
+IamDragonFury i agree. It's strange, but the slow motion is very calming.

IamDragonFury I feel the same way about softly falling snowflakes.

As Notre Dame burned, this song was stuck in my head.
Such a sad day in history, has been for 107 years.
Don't be sad because its was only the spire and a little bit of the roof of the cathedral tgats burned and at least it's going to be rebuild.
Amen!

In the case of religion, people recognize God as judge, and therefor open their eyes to life's true pleasures and missions.
that's not religion. that's faith.
I doubt that atheists feel less pleasure or purpose. I don't even see the connection between those and judging people. It's not like I spent my whole day for people to judge.
DarkCeleste11 Yes, Dumbledore did mention that when describing the Controversially Named Stone (first book/movie)
Esmarelda is one of the best Disney Protagonists ever. She's beautiful, kind, caring, sassy and just amazing. She was the only one who helped Quazi when no one else would. She also has an amazing voice
Definitely one of Disney's darker movies, but one of the best they've got
This is still one of the most powerful and beautiful songs Disney has ever produced.
I find it ironic how Claude Frollo says "and He shall smite the wicked and throw them in the fiery pit" when he himself falls in.
This song is so profoundly stirring and beautiful. I will always cry with gratitude for this movie

i feel so ashamed that my prayers are just like the people in the video asking for wealth, fame, glory to shine on my name, love i can possess, or God and His angels to bless me. i always pray for what i need and nothing else.
Easily the most underrated Disney film of all time... This movie deserves so much more attention...
There will never be a film made like this ever again. Ever.
Masterpiece if disney was alive he would be proud
Wasn't Walt a racist though?
@@lizzy1876def was
@@lizzy1876no, but even if he was why does that matter?
@@gtassa01 Because this shows a dark skinned Romani singing...and Walt is racist.
You can connect the dots.
Watching this video of the fire of Norte Dame such great history gone.... prayers for Paris🙏🏻
Notre Dame in fire now. Friends, praises of God for helping.
Well the cathedral is gonna be rebuild
Often times when I listen to this song, I feel like I’m a church and I’m offering my prayer intentions to God. And sometimes I get the feeling that God isn’t hearing my prayers but I cannot give up.
A prayer for others is greater than one for yourself
Going through a hard time right now. Grew up watching this movie I had to come back to this song I know it’s just a movie but it’s a very touching song
My gosh this song always makes me sob
I shed tears as soon as she said children of God.
T5his is the most underrated Disney movie of the 90's, and one of the best of all time. It doesn't get anywhere near the respect it deserves!
+JoyStar Actually, it has been getting a lot of respect in recent years. But yeah, totally, this movie rocks!
I adore this song. Such exquisite lyrics, and when she walks between the candles ❤️
I don't believe in the Christian God, but songs like these make me really appreciate religion. Before it turned into a polemic and a war of beliefs, religion existed to bring peace of mind and teachings to the people. I have a great respect for it, and those who can appreciate beliefs without being overzealous or intolerant.
+Cerise4697 I don't believe in any Gods, but this song really gets to me. Especially when she says 'I thought we were all the children of God'.
You're a moron if you think Jesus would have turned the other cheek. He always stood up to blasphemers and committed violence upon evil doing jews.
Thank you Disney for capturing the beauty of this church. Now it's gone forever
All good things come to pass
Everything about this song is amazing. Even though everyone is praying for themselves versus emeralda's selfless prayer, it's about longing primal need. The woman that asks for love to possess is just so raw. We never see her again but i remember her the most. Absolute raw, human need.
I'm now listening to this, crying as this magnificent Cathedral burns. May God watch over the people of Paris and all of France tonight
I'm crying all my tears...
Well now America has taken the plunge. Anyone with the SLIGHTEST disadvantage or disability is now an outcast. Countless people are going to suffer and die. Come Lord Jesus. There is not enough good on this planet to overcome evil. Fulfill your promise to deliver us.
Sometimes I just listen to this song and cry about how cruel the world is...how unkind it is to outcasts and how powerless we really are to stop it.
I live in Paris and Notre Dame is beautiful.
Listening to it rn hits different
i even love this song as an atheist.
There is nothing wrong in believing and hoping for a better tomorrow. you don't need god to give you that, the true good comes from within.
You don't need to be a christian to ask for help for those those less fortunate. Esmeralda is a gipsy after all.
KurashiDragon Gypsies ARE Christian its a race not a fait
Jesus and his Blessed Mother were indeed outcasts on earth
I'm atheist but I think everyone, athiest or thiest, can learn something from this song. "I thought we all were children of God"
Beth Dunkerley Music Because we are.
Beautiful and moving, it makes me cry. I ask for Glory to shine on Jesus' name.
I just noticed this when she says “ please help my people the poor and downtrodden” on their background their are four images showing Jesus life from the the flight to Egypt to his baptism. I wonder if that was on purpose.
It was absolutely on purpose. The whole point that Frollo is missing is that Jesus himself was an outcast and looked down upon in his life.
@@Donillini He was even executed in public for daring to oppose the powerful and the political, a fate that Esmeralda herself nearly suffers.
I love how she doesn’t want or need anything for herself she just wants to help others and what’s there not to admire about that
I don't care what anyone says, This is one of the most Beautiful Disney songs I have ever heard and I watch a lot of Disney stuff!
And I'm just here couse a miracle is burning. Devastating.
This movie is so underrated and it upsets me! This movie is absolutely beautiful and always makes me cry whenever I watch it
I really don't think it was such a great idea to make a cartoon based on a book this dark, but still this song is one of the best Disney songs EVER.
Hannah Small Couldn't agree more
KaRue 3 Exactly.
That's why people like this movie! It's Dark! There are a lot of dark Disney movies.
Nearly all Disney movies are based on extremely dark fairy tales...
This song never gets old. 23 years later, and I'm still listening to it on repeat. The feeling of being a Christian outcast really resonated with me for a while.
God Bless the Cathedral of Notre Dame 04-15-2019
God help these people in Paris.
+Arturo Cabral yes!
God help the people all over the world
Amen
Got help the people in Belgium.
god help the world honestly
"I ask for nothing... I can get by... but I know so many less lucky than I! Please help these people, the poor and downtrod"!!!
Honestly, the part that gets me most is "But still I see your face and wonder, were you once an outcast, too?".
Even though i'm muslim.. i think of and sing this song everytime before i go to sleep.
Weather your muslim, Bhudist, or Jewish, this is song represents what religion is truly about.
It will always apply to everyone.
I'm Muslim too and religious song still talks positive on god I sing a bit of church songs too
electricheart I am a Muslim, too, and I think this song is quite neutral. It has religious/spiritual vibes but still neutral.
you have my daughters name :) also a muslim deeply touched by this song
Muslim and Christians both believe in God so that make since.
"Yes i know I'm outcast ,I should not speak to you!"
You wrong! ,the God listen to everyone even these who bad because his love and mercy really bigger
I never liked this song when I was a child. Now it's the song that gives me hope.
My favorite Disney song of all time. Beautiful lyrics, melody, and meaning. So humbling! :)
I love this song. She's an awesome singer.
This song gives me goosebumps. I think it is my favorite Disney song.
