The head of the group is telling everyone to stand tall, stand correct, and stand together. If you think hawaiians wont put their life on the line for another brother, Hawaiian or not. Think again. For the record, this was a huge reason why we went undefeated that year till the sugar bowl.
UH needs to be congratulated here for finally adapting a Hawaiian war chant/challenge that better reflects the UH Warriors football team and the Hawaiian culture. I'm from New Zealand and a die hard American Football fan. But I was just flabbergasted when I came across videos of UH doing the Maori Haka especially the Kapa O Pango which was created specifically for our All Blacks national rugby team!!!
I spent my childhood in Honolulu. I used to go to UH football and baseball games. Hula dances were a part of my elementary school curriculum. Seeing this takes me back and I can really feel in in my bones. Makes me want to get in there and do it with them.
As a Fresno State Fan....I wish that you would do the Hak'a for the fans in New Orleans! Go Warriors!!! The WAC is proud of you!!! I LOVE THIS DANCE!!!
yes bro Maori o Aotearoa, My wife and I make sure our children have been taught the connections to their Polynesian relatives, so they can then teach their children.
I know Hawaii is technically part of the US, and the US would rather play American Football which no other country plays, but why isn't rugby better represented in Hawaii, its the main sport in most of the other Polynesian islands.
Very cool that the Warriors get to show their stuff here on the mainland on the big stage at the Sugar Bowl. Hope that they give UGA a run for their money in New Orleans.
My bro Poly culture is a living thing as long as some one can make a haka and perform it, It is a true haka and 20 years from now it will be a traditional haka no mater the island. Just look at where we got our seafaring skills back from a Kaumatua (respected elder) from micronesia each island keeps some skills alive.
love you my poly, stick together, no need to be rude and unkind, all those that dont understand or appreciate others cultures, when we appreciate ours then we understand and appreciate yours, arohanui.
this might be a long shot.....but I'm heading over to UH this fall semester on exchange from NZ. I'm really keen to dive straight into the culture over there be it Hawaiian, polynesian or whatever. If you're over there at UH Manoa can you send me a message please?!!!!
I think you have a good point, they should have just used a traditional Hawaiian chant. However please do remember that Tangata Maori and Kanaka Maoli are very closely related. We are Polynesian brethren and sistren, our traditions, language, culture are all closely related. It's not really copying because your traditions and our traditions are basically the same traditions.
King Kamehameha the great who unified the Hawaiian islands was a Samoan man. Although he didnt invent the haka, watching it here gave me a sense of how ferocious and valid he was. Thank you Samoa for sending your pupils to play for us, because without them the University of hawaii would be just like those Hawaiians who got shoved off the Pali... ALOHA Eh, no forget to omi the thumbs up, K? k.
hardout bro! this one is pretty cool, but it's always wicked seeing new haka's/siva tau. but as to Kapa O Pango, there is nothing new about that haka. the words are slightly changed at the beginning and the end, but otherwise, I've seen the bulk of that haka done at a couple colleges in wellington
Kanaka Maoli is in standard Hawaiian, the proper pronunciation is Tanata Maori. And yes we come from the same roots, over time we just evolved into our own unique culture. Much respect.
@aac202173 This isn't a Haka, it's a Ha'a. The lyrics and the movements are entirely hawai'ian. This is all them, sure it's inspired by the Haka, but they created this specifically for the University of Hawai'i.
good on you University of Hawaii for composing/preforming your own "Haka" ka pai. Now hopefully the rest of the hawaiian groups will follow your lead instead of ripping off Maori Haka.
man, that's cool! I like it and I can't wait to see it on national TV at the Sugar Bowl. And I hope the Warriors lay to wood to Georgia just to upset the BCS and all the haters!
the motions of Ha'a were incorporated in the Hula, as the Hula tells a story. This is refered to as "Ai Ha'a", or dance with bended knee.many of the movements would include martial arts ("Lua") movements. also, in ancient Hawaii, before battle each side would attempt to intimidate the other by screaming, chanting, and jestures. not unlike the "Haka". "peacefull?" in a way because the "Hula"(i put into quotation because it's a modern term) was done with reverence to pay respect to the God's.
All their gear takes away quite a lot of the manliness. Also part of what makes the Kapa O Pango and Ka Mate particularly frightening, is the fact that the All Blacks is quite possibly the best team in the world. I'm not an expert, but I don't think of Hawaii when I think of American Football. Not that I do very often. And just look at that weak hand on number 10 at 0.20.
If I had to guess, it's probably because the British didn't have as great a presence in Hawaii as they did in other parts of Polynesia. Brits were in Hawaii in the decades after Cook's arrival, but after Kamehameha unified the Islands, American business interests became a predominant force in the Kingdom and Hawaii gradually became a part of America's overseas empire. The British were kind of sidelined, but they had their own Pacific holdings (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji) to tide them over.
I think it's great that the Warriors have made their own War Chant. Ripping the chant straight off the All Blacks is probably not a good idea. Especially with the new Haka, since the last part translates to "Silver Fern, All Blacks, Silver Fern, All Blacks"
@hawaiian96chence you're welcome friend, yes Football is a great sport, I look at football though not as a game of skill, though u need lots of skill for football but I look at football as a game of heart, determination, will, to me Football has always been a game of Life! In life we all experience something hard, tough, we all have our own story, but it's how we overcome our struggles that keeps us going. Same with Football, lets say a team is better than the other, play hard, play with heart!
@MaoliOlaEoMai are u an actual native hawaiian, like not those wannabe hawaiians.but what you talkin about were you typed "although were polynesians,we are hawaiian, not maori."
I've seen the Warriors do the the (NZ) Haka before an after their games here on youtube. Why could'nt they have stayed true to their roots an did a Hawaiian war dance? instead they tried to pass off a cheap version of the NZ haka. New Zealanders have taken this dance to both world wars, (its not just rugby players that performed the Haka) so this holds more pride for all KIWIS for those of us who are at home an overseas.
this is a haka i can respect, it is there own to have, i hate seeing non New Zealand teams preforming the "Kamate" Haka, its about representing your own culture in your own way, if you dont have one dont take someone else's, well done Hawaii footballers for having your own war dance
In Hawaii, ancient tribal dance was not the Hula you see the ladies do at Tourist shows, but a fierce dance proclaiming origin, prowess and virilty of the male warriors in the same manner as Peruperu Haka in Maori culture. Ancient Hula was dominated by males as was Peruperu Haka. Bottomline: Polynesians share a common ancestry. Respect our common bonds as Polynesians.
Why is there even an argument about Hawaiian vs. Maori dance? Ka Mate Haka is just one form of Haka and is as commercialized as the Wahine/Lady Hula tourists expect to see on Waikiki Beach. The Polynesian Triad of Hawaii, Rapa Nui and Aotearoa all share a similar language and dance form. We are all Polynesian. In Hawaii we say Aloha, in Maori we say Aroha.
Bro I am Maori and like Missmaniapoto we come from the same tribe called Ngati Maniapoto I came on here looking for other Polynesian cuzzys Haka, Ai Ha'a, Sipi Tau, different names but the same thing I love watching them and if they happen to be doing a Maori one good on them if I get the opportunity to learn another poly haka I will, we had Hawaiians come to our area and they were our guest on our lands good-times had by all, Many Hawaiian words mean the same in Maori Pono
First off let me say that i have an immense respect for every sport and culture. I love watching association football, or soccer as we call it in the U.S., and i think that rugby is an interesting sport although i have never really been exposed to it. I don't see the need for all of you rugby fans to ridicule American football though. Enjoy you're own sports and maybe try to understand and appreciate another culture's one as well.
Do you know the history of why uh started the mari HAKA? I don't think they should be offended when it was created by someone in newzeland his family in hawaii. to me samoan and mari come from the same line of people. i could be wrong but. but to each his own. peace man.
Interesting. I've met Maori who say they came from Hawaiki and some from the Americas, taiwan ect. But when i hear or see Maori language I can make out a lot of it tbh... To me Tahitian and Maori and Hawaiian are so alike its crazy.
check out the Munster haka 4 ex Kiwi rugby players doing the haka against their own ex team mates only because they are playing for Munster...That was awesome, respectful. Thats what it's all bout. The pride and mana before a battle.
@hawaiian96chence interestingly enough I'm from the mainland, New York City to be exact! But I do agree, soo many people have lost what it is to be a proud person! Though I am not hawaiian, 'nor am I from Hawai'i, or any of the pacific islands, I do have a strong respect toward all men and women from the pacific islands! The pride, the way of the warrior, how to be a man, how to respect! These values have also carried onto the football field! my culture has lost that and have become fools!
true that we say Tangata Maori many Maori and Hawaiian words sound and mean the same, this all through the Islands, A Tongan Brother thought my wife was Tongan because of her Maori name "Kupenga" which means the same in both language
Maori Haka is a living thing any one can write one for what ever reason they want to, to challeng to cellebrate haka is not just for fighting. I would assume our Hawaiian brothers are the same we have old traditional ones and new ones, one day the new ones will be old traditional ones that is the nature of culture our Polynesian culture. Kia Kaha Hawaii
i thought it was stupid that the ncaa made them stop doing the haka. it looks cool, and it gets them ready to play. fsu, where i went to school, has the warchant. noone has made us stop.
He mihi nui tenei ki a koutou nga Tama Toa o Hawaii. Just want to register my support for indigenous peoples wanting to uniquley express themselves in a way that is Tangata Whenua based. Some of our more younger people forget we are all Pasifica Whanau.
PEOPLE. You cannot play AF without pads. no one woke up one day and decided to wear pads cause hitting hurt. AF is played at extremely high velocity and force. rugby is more form tackling. plus, theres no blocking AT ALL in rugby. football, more contact, more padding. simple,
It actually would be possible to die. In the early days of American football, the players were out on the field with no helmets or padding, and some were getting badly injured or even dying. President Teddy Roosevelt then made it a law to where players must have helmets and padding.
From a neutral perspective, I have to say that the all blacks haka is a thousand times more intimidating and it is mainly due to the pads, but there is nothing the team can do about that
Funny to read all the negatives on here. Good to know that the ways of our Polynesian ancestors are being kept from Hawai'i in the north to Aotearoa in the south. Can't blame all the ignorant rants being posted on here because them posters don't our ways and traditions so I'll just leave it at that. Choice haka (ha'a) and keep it strong as we sons of Maui only know how.
The head of the group is telling everyone to stand tall, stand correct, and stand together. If you think hawaiians wont put their life on the line for another brother, Hawaiian or not. Think again. For the record, this was a huge reason why we went undefeated that year till the sugar bowl.
K H till y'all ran into my dawgs🤗
Actually the Ha'a was used by Hawaiian warriors in the days of battles. All Polys have this connection no matter where they are from-

I am glad to hear them doing olelo Hawaii war chant! Awesome. They from Hawaii anyway. I like the new because it's Hawaiian.
Oh shit their huge! Another reason why Hawaii should get an NFL team!
they should
Size dont matter lol
Tyson1626 sure does in some positions...
I LOVE THIS DANCE!!!
this really is quite a site to see live. I saw it last year in Tuscaloosa when they came to town.
Good on the Hawaiian team for embracing their culture in this way
My son graduated with two bachelor degrees from the University of Hawaii! all I can say is!!! I LOVE IT!! REPRESENT BABY!! U.H. ROCKS!!
I love this chant i feel so proud to be Hawaiian !!! GO WARRIORS !!!
you say oli we Maori say ori (chants) bro we the same people
yes bro Maori o Aotearoa, My wife and I make sure our children have been taught the connections to their Polynesian relatives, so they can then teach their children.
Respect to our Hawaii Brothers and there Ha'a. If I was on the opposition side I wouldn't hesitate to take up the challenge. Play hard or go home
I know Hawaii is technically part of the US, and the US would rather play American Football which no other country plays, but why isn't rugby better represented in Hawaii, its the main sport in most of the other Polynesian islands.
@smoyer60 dude that was very well put haha. props to you
Rajah, mahalo for clearing that up.
I love this! It's so great to see the culture represented strong. Mahalo!
FOUND MYSELF PRESSING THE LIKE BUTTON AS SOON AS IT CAME ON
Very cool that the Warriors get to show their stuff here on the mainland on the big stage at the Sugar Bowl. Hope that they give UGA a run for their money in New Orleans.

Is there any place i can find the lyrics im doing a flash mob so i need the lyrics thanks
Cool. I like that: tradition and spirit in one entertaining bundle.
this might be a long shot.....but I'm heading over to UH this fall semester on exchange from NZ. I'm really keen to dive straight into the culture over there be it Hawaiian, polynesian or whatever. If you're over there at UH Manoa can you send me a message please?!!!!

Number 93 learned it 2 nights before while drunk and now looks around like "am I doinnit right?"
@123MRwolfe this isnt the haka, its an kanaka maoli chant of strength
How can get one copy of da chant
Good question. I believe this version was made specifically for this team that year. After that, they started doing a different variant of the haka.
can anybody make out the song that's playin in the background?
Kanaka Maoli is in standard Hawaiian, the proper pronunciation is Tanata Maori. And yes we come from the same roots, over time we just evolved into our own unique culture. Much respect.

Anyone have the words of the chant?
doing the Haka gets you so fucking hyped!!
especially when playin contact sports
[eg.Rugby,Football]
Sometimes intimidating to opponents

MEAN MY HAWAIIAN BROS YOU GO HARD WITH YOUR KAUPAPA,THE MAORI ARE THE SAME AS YOU & MANY MORE OF THE PEOPLE OF THE PACIFIC
Mad respect to the haka. and number 10, im scared of you

true that we say Tangata Maori many Maori and Hawaiian words sound and mean the same, this all through the Islands, A Tongan Brother thought my wife was Tongan because of her Maori name "Kupenga" which means the same in both language
After watching that ritual I would tell the Coach that I just soiled my undies and need to go change, I'll be back in maybe 2-3 hrs OK??
Speaking as an Englishman it kind of looks funny when you compare it to the fearsome Haka .. I mean what are these girls wearing for chrissake!
i like dis ha'a much more

All Blacks rugby team from New Zealand are the best when it comes to haka..

@randomdude1426 It's an islander thing, not rugby's.

This is haʻa, it's the Hawaiian war dance. Haka is Maori.
YEAAHH!!! HAWAI'I!!!!
@irishguy826 Its also a war dance

SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU KEEP IT HAWAIIAN?
KU'E, KU PONO, KU LIKE, E KU!
To oppose, to stand in perfect order(12-0), stand together, STAND!
From a neutral perspective, I have to say that the all blacks haka is a thousand times more intimidating and it is mainly due to the pads, but there is nothing the team can do about that
Search up "Among the trees New Zealand" In that vid at 4:40 read the names, tell me they don't resemble Hawaiian/Maori names.
Funny to read all the negatives on here. Good to know that the ways of our Polynesian ancestors are being kept from Hawai'i in the north to Aotearoa in the south.
