Excerpt from a 55 min documentary we have shot for PBS. For nearly 50,000 years, dances and songs have been an expression of Pacific Islanders' origins, their journeys, their struggles - their very existence. These are their dance stories. The program journeys to five cultures: Maori (New Zealand), Samoan, Palauan, Chamorro (Guam), Kanak (New Caledonia), ...

    > E kore au e ngaro, he kàkano i ruia mai i Rangiàtea.<
"I will never be lost, for I am a seed sown in ... ('eternity')."
... fantastic Maori wisdom. Fits for humans in general, only very sad that so many still have become lost due to greed, grudge and various other man-made miseries. REFLECT!

Wow this is so beautiful. A friend just shared a performance of the dance and I was so in awe of the sustained passion displayed. And the pride, the intensity, and pure power. Even though I had no idea what I was watching or what people were saying, those qualities shone through.

Anyone a fan of Fear of the Walking Dead star Clifton Curtis knows he is big major star and producer in New Zealand, Many years ago watch "Once we were Warriors" brake throw film about the Maori and how because of Western society they seemed to be like lost souls but only throw going back to traditional culture they regain identity for themselves. That film was make 15 years ago and throw Clifton own production company has produce many films on Maori, I appreciate his efforts to show us westerners the Maori people and their stories and also provide pride full identity for his people and some dam good moves along the way. I think in last 20yrs things have change to give the Maori a better identity for themselves in our fast past world. The New Zealand Foot ball team performs one of these dances before each game it is awesome to see, they even have non Maori players dancing which is a wonderful thing to see, it gives little entertainment and unity of the people of New Zealand because regardless of race they share something in common which is a kick ass team :)

celebrate your heritage, sister. I am currently studying Native Culture and the Maori is among the most fascinating tribes I have discovered. But all native cultures be they maxican, american, islander, european are STRIKING in their similarity of custom and belief...May the Great Father and Great Mother join hands and guide your path!

Maori people migrated from Rarotonga (although there would have been many voyagers throughout the pacific joining peoples together) Kupe the explorer came from an island in the cook island group. When i visited Rarotonga i came across a memorial: there were 7 plaques embedded in the ground with the names of the maori waka on them. Another plaque read: 3 migratory voyagers left Raro.1 to Tahiti, 1 to Hawaii and 1 to Aotearoa (NZ)
Arohanui to our Hawaiin, Tahitian and Rarotonga cousins!!

My dad shared with me as a child a story regarding his journey in Crete with the 28th Maori battalion. The German soldiers were plenty when he and conrades (whanaunga) were separated from their platoon. Being outnumbered they waited for the Germans to come. Once within sight. C company using their bayonetes as taiaha, came together the haka was actioned, as warriors and they were to die as warriors. The Germans turned back giving them enough time to rejoin their platoon

Man I wish the British tried harder to conserve the Maori culture, it would have been awesome to hear the dialects of the South in NZ, where only books talk about their extinct language as being pure vowels. Man how awesome would it be to hear a language that's just fluid and spoken without consonants.
However cheers to all my Maori brothers for keeping your culture alive.

The maori ethnic dance has a lot in common with many african dances. I am glad certain customs and traditions across the world look similar. Even their totems, statues and mask look a lot like the east african ones .I know this because I have travelled across east Africa extensively.
Maoris are beautiful people, I know they catch hell in NZ but they keep their heads up.

Firstly, it wasn't their land in the first place, they like the British, came in from afar. Secondly, despite having a treaty, the British did like they did everywhere else... so yes today, there are many many problems but the strength of Maoris is not to be denied by statistic because it is a strength they will live in the history books of humanity. This short excerpt celebrates this...

@123MRwolfe Cool bro. I think being Eskimo (Yupik or Inuit?) and Tlingit you would just feel a natural connection with other Indigenous culture more than most. Maori do share similarities with Indigenous people of the Americas, such as, an abiding affection and pride for their past, traditions and land. Shared histories of colonialism and displacement, political and present day issues etc.

Actually the Polynesian races of which the Maori are part of, actually descended from Austronesians (Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and most importantly Taiwan "the Malays") who started migrating towards the central Pacific. Although they culturally evolved away from the Malay people, genetically they share many similarities.
