Amazing dance! I was witness to a man performing a 25 minute version of this on the 9th of July, 2010. It was riveting! Such intensity and pride can only come from a lifetime of practice.
Wow this is so beautiful. A friend just shared a performance of the dance and I was so in awe of the sustained passion displayed. And the pride, the intensity, and pure power. Even though I had no idea what I was watching or what people were saying, those qualities shone through.
Thanks for this one Linda!!! I think it's great how these people still have a traditional dance and remember their own culture, it's one funky dance too...brill!
> E kore au e ngaro, he kàkano i ruia mai i Rangiàtea.< "I will never be lost, for I am a seed sown in ... ('eternity')." ... fantastic Maori wisdom. Fits for humans in general, only very sad that so many still have become lost due to greed, grudge and various other man-made miseries. REFLECT! > SAPERE AUDE
i love the believe here, made me cried like never before, and made my soul spike with blue flames, i'm practicing it everyday, truthly believe i'm a fallen warrior from New-Zealand, picking up so many word's like no problem at all, full support.
Fell in love with the Maori culture when I lived in Cambridge for 4 glorious years. It is thrilling to know that there are cultures, with such strength and wisdom, protectors of the land, who still cling strongly to their ways. Arise! Opre!
Watching this ...just seen the New Zealand 🇳🇿 protesting today on UA-cam, they were dancing this tribal dance...wanted to find out more about the culture! 👍👍❤❤❤❤💪💪💪💪💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 AWSOME
Anyone a fan of Fear of the Walking Dead star Clifton Curtis knows he is big major star and producer in New Zealand, Many years ago watch "Once we were Warriors" brake throw film about the Maori and how because of Western society they seemed to be like lost souls but only throw going back to traditional culture they regain identity for themselves. That film was make 15 years ago and throw Clifton own production company has produce many films on Maori, I appreciate his efforts to show us westerners the Maori people and their stories and also provide pride full identity for his people and some dam good moves along the way. I think in last 20yrs things have change to give the Maori a better identity for themselves in our fast past world. The New Zealand Foot ball team performs one of these dances before each game it is awesome to see, they even have non Maori players dancing which is a wonderful thing to see, it gives little entertainment and unity of the people of New Zealand because regardless of race they share something in common which is a kick ass team :)
you have a lovely culture and preserving the artistic dance is a blessing in that the tradition shall live on in the way it is meant to be! Human expression is best understood through artistic communication!
It's so cool how the polynesian belief is so similar to the native american beliefs, always take care of mother earth. We aren't so different from the maori people, proud to be a native american
Good video brotha. I have mad respect and admiration for you culture. The strength love and unity amongst your people is unmatched @ Missayy Newmew. I saw your comments on the " How they control us" Video. You have the power brother!!! Lets do it!! Now..
Two things: 1) if you want to see the women side (Poi Dance), don't miss this video: ua-cam.com/video/hXwZqzboCsc/v-deo.html 2) This video was posted quite a while ago; it has now been reposted in its proper widescreen format (pass it on): ua-cam.com/video/3EAIEYac3oY/v-deo.html
"I am going to eat you" I want all of my football players thinking the exact same thing when they walk and the field and look at the other team "we are going to eat you" I LOVE IT. Thank you for allowing us to share in your beautiful culture!
celebrate your heritage, sister. I am currently studying Native Culture and the Maori is among the most fascinating tribes I have discovered. But all native cultures be they maxican, american, islander, european are STRIKING in their similarity of custom and belief...May the Great Father and Great Mother join hands and guide your path!
Maori people migrated from Rarotonga (although there would have been many voyagers throughout the pacific joining peoples together) Kupe the explorer came from an island in the cook island group. When i visited Rarotonga i came across a memorial: there were 7 plaques embedded in the ground with the names of the maori waka on them. Another plaque read: 3 migratory voyagers left Raro.1 to Tahiti, 1 to Hawaii and 1 to Aotearoa (NZ) Arohanui to our Hawaiin, Tahitian and Rarotonga cousins!!
Maori people are amazing. Who here has watched the movie 'Her majesty'. A very touching movie about New Zealand and the Maori, with very talented actors too.
:So we meet again Skinz - I had thought that e-mail was business or junk stuff. But there are so many things to learn on it (if you can sift out the B.S.). I really do love watching the "original" Maori dance with the tattoos or paint, don't know which. But their beautiful men. By the way, I won a game of Trivial Pursuit with that answer. My son accused me of reading all the cards and memorizong them (as if).
I'm white European and I travelled around NZ and I love the Maori and their culture But what a fearful past they had and the Haka reflects this. If I'd have visited NZ in the old days I'd have given myself to a tribe and come out totally Moko'ed, feasting my enemy (the European) but hopefully with my head still on. Total respect to you.
Maybe people do not take the time to get to know and appreciate your culture because it is obvious to me, that you are indeed a beautifully unique heritage that deserves love and respect! I would find it to be an honor to be invited to your land of New Zealand! Your friend in Nevada USA :)
@teresagabriel I feel that. It is profound and is a true embrace of our authentic human nature. You can feel the roots manifesting in these people and the very words of this man.
@MrBucket0fries My dad shared with me as a child a story regarding his journey in Crete with the 28th Maori battalion. The German soldiers were plenty when he and conrades (whanaunga) were separated from their platoon. Being outnumbered they waited for the Germans to come. Once within sight. C company using their bayonetes as taiaha, came together the haka was actioned, as warriors and they were to die as warriors. The Germans turned back giving them enough time to rejoin their platoon
it is not what u look like that makes u maori the fire in our hearts for our culture and love for people no matter wher e u from we r all the same .. makes u maori.. love to the world makes u maori sharing our music and love .. and understanding is maori....
@Lookinland Sounds like it would be the same as it is anywhere else. I'll just have to do the same thing I've been doing all my life; look past the bad people and find the good ones ^-^ I really do I hope I can live in your country some day. I learn more and more, and it just gets more and more enticing.
Just wow...now this is what gives me even more of a incentive to learn the other half of my ancestry, language (te reo Maori) and the culture, cool indeed.
Hi.. this is really an awesome documentation.. would it be possible to watch the entire documentary, I am a student of dance and it would be great to show this to our class, thank you :)
... and will never be! KIA KAHA. Best regards and respect to the good ones among you and many thanks for what you have taught me (sometimes very heavy, but highly precious), Maoris = Humans. Ramses 11568.
The maori ethnic dance has a lot in common with many african dances. I am glad certain customs and traditions across the world look similar. Even their totems, statues and mask look a lot like the east african ones .I know this because I have travelled across east Africa extensively. Maoris are beautiful people, I know they catch hell in NZ but they keep their heads up.
These videos are so exciting to watch. Did the original Maori dancers have tattoos on faces and bodies? The videos I've seen show that. But maybe for the dance, they painited their faces. Yes? No?
Este es uno de los videos favoritos míos porque refleja el espíritu guerrero de todo ser humano que estima su raza y su gente y sobre todo que tiene ALMA del Creador del cielo y de la tierra con esperanza de vida eterna.
i love the haka. i live in hawaii and our cultural dances are calm and timid. but the haka is strong and shows a fire in the heart. both beautiful but haka i like more because of its intensity.
@TheTainoWarrior I'm Carib (Kalinago) and we never ate anyone! Garifuna are different from Karifuna but we are related, just as we are related to the Taino.
Hello! I am a student of Communication Sciences. I'm doing my final work on the haka. If among you there is a Maori, of any tribe, I'd get some advice and if you want, even some material (video or document) that could be useful for my research. Sorry for my English (I'm Italian). Thank you! Viola S.
Ok, wow that was a mistake on his behalf. well now you know they are part of the Polynesian group that settled on many of the islands spread through the South Pacific and as far as Hawaii. If you ever get to travel you will find many of the traditional dances and even the culture of tatooing is similar in ways. A very beautiful culture.
this video gives me chills up my spine. it's powerful and beautiful.

@korlesma It's like the prehistoric Greeks in the Iliad, shouting their names and lineages across the battle lines at the Trojans. Gotta love it.
