EASY Rocker Panel Replacement

  • In this video I'll show you how I would go about replacing my rocker panels on a Jeep Cherokee. There are several reasons you would want to replace a rocker panel, maybe it's rusted out, maybe its damaged, or maybe you just want to add rock protection and strength for offroading. For this replacement we'll add some protection at the same time in the form of a rock slider by mocking up some 2x6" rectangular tubing 1/4" thick.

Great video. I have seen a few jeeps on the trails with similar rocker setups. Nice job on the step by step walk through, it shows exactly what to expect when doing this type of mod. I recently had a set of tube sliders made for my Yota but I really like this approach too.

    As always, thanks Matt. 👏
You’re work and calm approach to Jeeping is appreciated more then you know in our home. My younger sons and I use your videos as tutorials for rebuilding the family XJ. It’s high time we buy some shirts. 👍 This comment is in depth - so fair warning.
Now, we just finished cutting out my rocker panels while trimming the fenders and doing the cut and fold. We left the top and most of the bottom (that wasn’t rusted out) of the rocker so there is clean metal to tie the tubing to. I’m mostly concerned about the added weight when picking a tube size. 2” x 8” sounds REALLY HEAVY if you add a roll cage, along with a roof rack, front and rear bumpers, etc. IDK. WE WELCOME SUGGESTIONS.
AN OME DPG-OFFROAD 2.5” Lift is being installed this month, so we’ve decided to keep cutting out the cancer while we’re in so deep as it is. It does seem that even though the 2’ x 6” doesn’t lend much room to tie in a roll cage, perhaps I could notch the vertical tubes in such a way that it ties in well enough to do the job. Your own 2 x 6” tubing install lines up great. 👍. Again, IDK about weight given the 4.0 that’s in our 2000 XJ. We are not much of a rock crawling family (yet) , but protection from trail scrapes and overall integrity of the exterior is really the goal. Bottom line is my rocker panels are rusted out due to Michigan, and I need to replace them. Seems wise to drop in something stronger then stock replacements.
Thanks again to all whom took the time to read this, and any viewers please feel free to chime in on this with advice. I’ve got the skills to do the work, but always appreciate direction from those with the experience. - Chris & The Boys in Kalamazoo 👌.

Matt, I'm a fellow XJ driver but it's just a tiny old Zuke/Sidekick that is in cancerous need of rocker replacement I have up here in the Pac.NW.
I have 2 of these which I call my street legal quads. Might just do each step twice and upgrade them both.
You made this consept look fairly straight forward. Thanks for that!

Thank you. I've always seen people do this, and other body mods to the cherokees but never saw any video on exactly what you will find behind the pieces you cut out. That makes it a little bit of a mystery and it's challenging justifying cutting the body if you have no idea how you'll patch it back up if you find something you weren't expecting. Thanks for the visual

The tieing it all in is kinda what baffles me. Without frame stiffners I think the sheetmetal would barely hold this in and not really be able to use it as a step... so going maybe 2x4 would be a better idea, as no one would try to use it as a step. With frame stiffners that went around the frame - especially with a big ol' tube through it like yours, it's a whole different ball game IMO, and I could see 2x6 with a tube on the outside or better yet 2x8s like you said...
As for tying it all in, square tube seems more rigid but lose more ground clearance and has more chance of getting hung up on rocks... plate seems like it wouldn't be triangulated enough and the leverage alone would be enough to crack the welds/break it off... Maybe thick plate L brackets and gussets every now and then?

I have a choice between 1/8" and 1/4" 2x6 (3/16 isn't available at my current supplier, and would be 3x more $ elsewhere). Matt,
This is all well and good but like you said, if you live in the North, as I do, the salt really eats at these. My issue, as many others have, is the lower 3 to 4 inches of the doors are rotting out. Makes my Jeep XJ look like it has cancer. Is there an easy way to fix these doors aside from looking in a junk yard for better doors and replacing the entire door. Bondo on a Jeep is not an option, or is it?

    • @Bronkey469

+Willy Durf You could get away with repairing it for a small spot, but 3-4 inches would need a new door

      Weird kid Karting
Thanks. I just replaced my entire Dana 30 in the front due to rust. The drivers spring perch rusted right off and the spring broke the sway bar extension right off the axle housing. So at this point I will just rig it with sheet metal some how. It only has 67 K on it as I let it sit for 12 years with little road time but in deep snow. The salt just tore it up from sitting.
I replaced a lot of the front axle parts so I could drive it. Got about 2 grand in that front end. Rear leaf springs are almost gone also so new doors are the least of my worries. Maybe I can just rivet some sheet metal on there and paint the crap out of it. Just the cold air coming in the holes is a real chilling experience. Thanks again. I love Matt's site, he is really good at this stuff.

to answer your question ik in PA rockers aren't required to pass safety it's not a structural piece as the unibody is

Why would a crawler need to pass inspection?? Legit question, i am completely out of the loop when it comes to vehicle inspection. Here in ohio as long as it will go down the road you can drive it, no inspction needed

@@erniestanger6613 really? In PA? My ram just failed pa state inspection because rockers are rusted. Rocker panels are a structural part. In an off road build like this it wouldn't matter. Still retains the structural integrity as long as it has been reinforced by welding frame supports to it. Would that pass inspection in PA? I would imagine it would as long as the structural integrity is still there and the inner rockers and floors are solid

@@davidford7843 Then whomever failed you was 100% wrong. Unless it rotted up into the floors or the cab the rockers dont fail. Doors rotted through, bed cab and floors fail but not rockers unless its all the way up into the cab where exhaust fumes can get in

First step to replace rocker panels: Strip the entire vehicle down to bare metal.
