  • This week we are back at it working on the 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ and continuing on the rust repair. Today I will cutting out the old rusty rocker panels and replacing them with 2x6" tube steel. This rocker panel will take the place of the old rocker and also be strong enough to act as a rock slider. In this series I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish. Today we will be continuing on the passenger side with the rocker panel. This process is very similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ 3x6" rocker panel replacement. If you have any questions that the video does not cover, make sure to leave them below.

When you were doing the lift kit, I was wondering about all that work on such a rusted out XJ. Now I see that rust isn't an issue after all. It is so rewarding watching you reclaim a vehicle that others would write off as junk.

Almost exactly the same condition as was my zj, pretty much did frame stiffeners, sliders, longarm switch all at once

Its about relative value. I just paid decent money on a little ole ladies XJ because it was.....a little ole ladies. It needs rear leafs, u bolts (broken) and her husband used aluminium and latex paint to put lipstick on the pig on the rockers. It was quite funny actually. I knew what he'd done. It is perfect and unmolested. ...so it was worth it.

Great to see this younger generation with these types of skills. Really enjoyed the video.
My 99 WJ is almost road ready, and I know I'm ready to get back behind the wheel to see how much difference the new parts have made.

Thanks brother. Everything you have done in this and the video before this is pretty much everything I have have to do to mine. I was starting to get a little discouraged and I have years of experience. But I also suffer from bi polar and perfectionism so everything becomes very difficult in my head. If I don't think it's going to come out perfect I tend to never end up doing it. I know what has to be done but seeing it actually being done makes it easier for me. I was really stressing about spending the money on OEM floor pans and like you said they're expensive and I was having a hard time visualizing what it would look like with regular sheet metal and whether it would come out good without having bead rolls and the right curvature. Also I wasn't sure on what size tubing I was going to use for the rock sliders. I also have to do the rear quarter tuck. It really goes to show that even us guy's with past experience can learn from the younger generation. So please keep them coming brother it's really appreciated. 💯

If you own an xj always keep a heater core by pass hose in your glove box ,just order one that fits an Lt 1 Camaro then get the 3\4and 5\8 fittings plus 4 hose clamps, cause you just never know, justsayn.

Nice job I would have put the same up towards the top also I'm going to do the same thing to mine however I'm going to use a 2x8 rectangle 1/4-in walled and I'm going to put four supports from the subframe under the channel for more support The reason I'm going with 2x8 instead of 2x6 and it looks like there's only going to be like an inch and a half left over and be running over rocks and stuff don't want to damage the doors those things are going to get beat up pretty bad so I figured 8 in that'll give me 3 and 1/2 3 1/4 in sticking out past the door instead of inch or inch and a half just for more protection just food for thought brother Nice job

A few tricks I've found with rusted bolts. Tightent before loosening it helps break the rest. The other is put the socket on the bolt and hit the socket with a Hammer it kind of shocks the rust a bit add some heat and some spray and usually comes out.
