Tips For Grappling After 30 ( I Feel Better At 31 Than 28 )

  • Getting old and grappling after 30 is something I've discovered isn't as bad as I was expecting. Eventually my body will break down as it ages. But I've found several ways to lessen the frequency of injuries and stay healthy on the mat. I can honestly say I feel better at 31 than I did at 28.
    In this video I discuss one of the simple things I started doing after I noticed my body felt worse and worse when I was around 28 years old.
    Making routine maintenance a part of my routine has helped me feel better and healthier getting older and grappling at 31 than I did at 28. I feel less stiff and take less time to warm up.
    No matter what age you are. If you take the idea of developing a routine for your maintenance. I promise, you'll feel and perform better when you're on the mats.
    Here's the Attack The Back post if you're interested in hearing more about my take on grappling into your 30's and beyond.

      HowToAdvanced i know what you mean. I've often found my self competly decapitated or paraplegic after rolling for 24 a day, but after listening to my body and taking 5 minute breaks, i no longer find myself decomposing after a workout and am back to rolling like a 687 year old again!

    I am 51 and most times train 4 to 5 times a week, and have about 8000 mat hours , THE most important thing I have learned is that good TECHNIC is key also train without ego, no worries about "losing" that frees your mind and the results MAY surprise you... When I was a white/ blue belt my body was usually sore, seemed like I always had some kinda injury, 10 years later at black belt training seems easier than ever, and I now face the best guys in the gym everyday, other black belts/ browns... Being a black belt seems way easier than being a blue for me, I now understand what I have to do to get the job done Without wasted energy, One other thing I know helps me is magnesium oil, I use it before and after training on my lower back and hamstrings, great stuff. Enjoy your videos Chewy!

    Im 33 and all of a sudden my body decided to say "hello, I'm not ready sir" 😳. I started doing everything you are saying. I wrestled throughout middle school and high school, did body building in my 20's, in my 30's I got back into martial arts and WOW, I wasn't ready.
    Friends listen to this man. Stretch before you turn into a mess. Rest or digress.

      I'm 41 and there are days when its almost hilarious how much pain my hobbies of BJJ and playing goaltender in ice hockey have caused me. Wouldn't trade the experience for anything. When I play I feel fine, must be endorphins or something. Fast forward a few hours and I'm lying in bed covered in ice packs trying not to laugh histerically because the pain seems to be traveling around my body making sure no area is left out. lol.

    If I may add: water, mobility (Scott Sonnen), dynamic warmups before, stretching after, good nutrition (vitamins, omega 3s, veggies, protein, BREAKFAST), sleep, good posture and don't sit for longer than 25 minutes at a time :). Drilling will probably also help so that your reactions come from a relaxed ingrained response rather than a "push through the tension I'll practice under pressure" response.

    I just started jujitsu at 72. Have weight trained with a personal trainer for two years and have lots of muscle mass. I am 6'2 200lbs. No existing injuries. I am learning not only does Jujitsu let a smaller person take on a larger person but an extremely fit older person take on a younger person of the same or lesser fitness. Aging is degradation of four things: muscle mass, flexibility, cardio, and mental acuity. Every one of those can be developed for and with Jujitsu. If I train harder and my body is fitter and more flexible than my opponents age becomes just a number. Think Arnold now at 70 practicing Jujitsu. He would be a handful I am sure.

    I have surfed my whole life and spent time chasing big waves and love the challenge. Finally started bjj which is very popular with surfers and absolutely love the challenge of it. I started late at 40 but so so glad i didnt wait a minute longer. Its never too late. So much fun, so humbling and looking forward to getting better flow on the mats. Definitely need to listen to my body at this age. Really enjoy your videos very helpful, I am here in San Diego living the dream. Thanks and aloha!

  • @xpat73
    @xpat73 7 років тому +9

    I'm 43. What he says about listening to your body is key. If you are exhausted......you will get more progress and actually get fitter by taking a day or two off. I only go to BJJ twice a week, maybe sometimes 3 times - because I want to lift 3 times a week and run intervals once. Really I only take one day off a week...but at 43 I probably should take 2 days off. The problem is that when you show up for BJJ class, you don't know if the instructor is going to give you a less demanding technical drill class with 20 minutes of rolling...or flog you with 30 minutes of fitness and 30 minutes of rolling.

    • @andrewandrew5489
      @andrewandrew5489 7 років тому +5

      True and also im only 28 but feel worlds of different from when I was 23-25. And this video encouraged me to give yoga a try after I rejoined at blue belt level for the first time in 10 years just 7 or so weeks ago; spent 6 of those weeks out do to multiple injuries one of them being a persistent lower back pain..... Just from living a mostly sedimentary life with your everyday posture being redundant and often in awkward poses and combine that with not moving the spine much, and you have yourself a dangerous modern lifestyle that doesn't translate with jiu-jitsu well....
      So, I couldn't figure out for the life of me why I stretched my hamstrings and stuff so well, even been stretching in the gym for about 3 months straight working on my splits: the year after last..(1 year ago)... But at least I had a background in it...any way, WHY THE HELL would ibhave bad lower back problems? Well, this video encouraged me to give yoga a shot, not right away, but it sank in, and 2 weeks from the time Ifirst watched this video, I found myself 4 days in a 30 day yoga challenge titled: Ease into it.... And I never thought of me as a machine type guy like he stated in the video; it didn't resignate with me when I first watched this (before yoga) but I've learned something about myself and that is you can just monster through every muscle in your body and force the stretch in every muscle, you'll get yourself killed doing that...most importantly in the support group of fine muscles that support your weight and neurological connections involved in getting a tight contraction.. so there's a lot gonin on and you need to be aware of that. And there's 2 different yoga videos i found great for the spine and back: if your back is really dysfunctional like mine then do these in order. A. "Yoga for BJJ , a free class". And . B. "Yoga 30 day challenge day 1 , ease into it with Adriane"
      My back is solved now in only 2 days, and even as a 28 year old I found I was body fucked, and also that I accidentally had a tough guy personality and I'm ashamed.
      Take care my friends, support the noobs with comradery , I'm one of them :)

    44 and just starting is hard. My mind has the 20 yr old mentality, let's do this, but 20 years of life injuries and poor care of my body means it revolts. I wanted to come in gung ho and show myself I still had it. You undo 20 years of crappy living in a week. BJJ said...I don't think so. I was really frustrated, I felt behind the eight ball. Then I read a quote you had posted about drops filling a bucket. I realized, I was focused on the need and the end result, and had forgotten the important reasons I was there in the first place. My health, my son, new friends and to learn. So, now if my body only makes it 2 nights a week.. so be it... maybe some day soon it will be three... then who knows. Thanks Chewie!

    My tips for grappling at an international level after 30 : 2 grams of protein per kg minimum per day, make sure you don't lack any vitamins nor minerals (take multivitamin and multimineral complex), eat 10 to 30g of creatine per day, use beta-alanine and arginine as a prework out, use peptopro and bcaa during training (you can add cafeine if you train in the morning it will make you more energetic and burn more fat) as an intratraining supplement you can also add sugar either cluster dextrine or simple sirup of your choice to keep your glycogene levels high during the training and makes you able to train more efficiently, as for the rest exactly 3 months or 12 weeks before a major competition you should cycle Testosterone, Winstrol and Trenbolone some premix of 200mg/200mg/100mg exist, inject 2 times per week, take arimidex, take clenbuterol and diamox before the end of your cycle if you're not at your aimed weight, this cycle will provide you more than enough energy to take a jiu-jitsu class and go lifting weight everyday so go do it but be protect your tendons, take collagen peptide 1&2, chondroitine, and n-acetylglucosamine to not make them snap because of your sudden gain in strength, do not forget to train your grip strenght too with captain of crush gear. You're now ready to shred some white belts in competition like crazy.

    Another tip I learned the hard way for older beginners (by getting a nasty groin pull two weeks into starting BJJ). Do NOT go too hard, especially with much larger people. This has nothing to do with how gentle or nice your training partners are. Everyone in my gym is extremely nice, but if you have your body do stuff it's not used to (and do it hard), then you're just begging for an unnecessary injury.
    As a complete newbie white belt, you don't know any better than to try to "muscle" things, so there isn't even much of a point to going ``all out." I'm learning better when to explode and use muscle, and when to just stay calm and relaxed as time goes by.

Sure, if you are competing you want to win, but in training the way I see it is if I get hurt grappling with young people with rubber bones, all training stops.... For waaaaaaaaaaaaaay longer than when I was young. And that ain't cool. Not that I wont do it! I just know my limits.

    That was a great video. I'm 51 and I just started jiujitsu a few month ago. When I first started I had aches and pains on muscles I haven't used in years. Unfortunately I just injured my lower back at work and have been away from training for 3 weeks now. I really miss it bout anyway I was wondering if you had any videos for maintenance on the body, it's almost as important as the training itself at my age. Lower back maintenance would be cool to. Thanks for your video posts

      I,m 42 and been training for a few month. Same issue here and I started to swim every other day and after that take a sauna, now I train jiu jitsu about 4 times a week and on Sunday i take Kali lessons. When I have any injury i just stop training for a day and go swimming and take a sauna, helps a lot!

    😂 Just wait until you cross 35, then 40, then 45... significant changes every 5 years.
    You are 31...you have no idea, no disrespect intended. What I mean is, Just Wait! You are still in your prime, and at 45 you will see that.
    You are definitely correct about the massage and stretching. For young athletes, do it when you are young and you will perform even better. Plus you will not have all these old knots like I have. Tool Assisted Myofacial Release will find stuff no masseuse ever will.
    Try it. 🙏

    Try intermittent fasting - 4~6 days a week. Doing wonders for me. Lost 30+lbs and recover without much problems training almost every day - even weekend open mats. They say intermittent fasting increases human growth hormone and other good stuff, but whatever it's doing, it seems to be good. Bjj and yoga are great, and so is IF.

    Great video brother, thanks! I have a question... I'm 38 and I only just started BJJ like ten months ago. I'm one of the older guys, and I'm also one of the smaller guys ( 5'6, 135 pounds). So I kind of have a lot of strikes against me. I'm old, I'm small and I'm also super new, so I routinely get smashed. My friends I train with give me advice, but I wonder if you have something to add on how I can overcome all this and still become a deadly MF...?

      Just keep training. It's simple and beautiful. All you have to do is show up and you'll get better. I guarantee it. But not everyone can keep showing up. So if you can do that. You'll definitely get better and possess a skill that many people can't get.

    hi sir im 30 yrs old. i train 5x a week only at night time. i've been doing jitz for about a month and a half my body hurts like hell but that adrenaline rush gives me a feeling of happiness and not feeling pain at all. :)) do you think i'm over training myself at my age?

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  7 років тому

      Possibly. You may want to ease up a bit. Giving yourself a day of rest in between if you feel like you're getting beat up.
      Check your heart rate when you're well rest and then on a day where you feel a little wiped out. See if there is a jump on the wiped out day. If there is you may want to rest and let your body recoup. Or at least sit out rolling and just drill.

    • @francislouielago
      @francislouielago 7 років тому

    What did you do when yoiu had the spasms where you were totally locked up? I get it so bad that it hurts to start off standing up, but when I'm on the ground it's not as bad...Any kind of lifting like a dead or squat type such as a double leg or hip toss it hurts like lightning....not good and it's killin my training

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  8 років тому

      +Chewjitsu it's the very lower part where my hips meet my back, on either side of the spine. very sharp pain and spams after to point of being hunched over.

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  8 років тому

      I used to get lower back spasms after walking back in the day. I had to really work on stretching my hip flexor. After stretching our my hip flexor it seemed to take the pulling off my lower back.

      +Chewjitsu mine is bad when I sit driving...In training ground I'm good, just anything bending over and lifting is what gets it. I'll sit out of rendori alot which sucks bc as a white belt I need the time and it's my strong suit with my football background I'm very comfortable clinched with footwork and hand placement.....thanks for the tip I'm going to do every day at work and see how it helps...great vids

      I do foam roll but I think the knots are soo deep that it doesn't work anymore. I do have a ball but its not as hard as the lacrosse ball. Ill buy one today. Also use the thera-cane, but its only works for a short period of time till my back re-tightens... The only stretches i would do is right before BJJ

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  8 років тому

      I've got a few guys in the 60s at my gym. I encourage them to take rests during rolling. Some days they won't do any rolling if they're feeling their body but they still want to come in and drill. Maintenance work is still a good tip too.

      Thank you for the reply. I'm hitting 8-10 classes per week. Mostly fundamentals and drilling classes with a couple or three regular classes with rolling included. I'm mostly trying to find the right balance between training and recovery. I'm in great shape, but joint issues are holding me back. I guess I need to be more aggressive in dealing with them. Current medical/insurance policies are to slow roll everything. Sorry to ramble. Thanks again. Greg J

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  8 років тому

      Hah, don't worry about rambling. I do plenty of it.
      If you're rolling 2-3 times a week. That's not bad. If you're getting a good amount of drilling in along with that. There isn't really a need to do more than that. Unless you're gearing up for a competition and in that case. It's only temporary.

    • @gregjennings9442
      @gregjennings9442 8 років тому

      Thanks again. Part of my issue is that I'm the oldest guy at my gym (Jon and Sean's place in Dayton) by 10 years and have no one to look to for experience. I'm typically hitting 6-8 drilling classes per week and hitting "regular" classes with rolling 2-4. I'm not currently prepping for a tournament, but thinking HARD about it if I can get the shoulders stabilized. So, sounds like I just need to take more aggressive action on the shoulders, listen to my body in my training schedule, and do the "train after 30" ideas to take care of myself for longevity.

      Im 50 and just recovering from bursitis and tendonitis in my shoulder.trying to learn the happy balance as i tend to be the guy who has a 20 year old ambition in a 50 year old body! ive found 3 classes a week with 2 rolling sessions is about max for me to stay healthy.If i am getting ready for a jits tournament i may use positional escapes for more cardio.Our gym is a catch gym so it gets brutal at times with the younger guys,but Im learning to balance it out.
