Are You Too Old to Start BJJ?

  • Am I too old for BJJ? This questions comes up so often. I get this questions almost daily. Either from people interested in training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in Louisville, KY, or I get the question from people who watch the videos and read the blog.
The short answer to the “ Am I too old to train BJJ?” question is simply. . . No, you’re not too old.
There are so many other factors that people deal with that age isn’t nearly as important as people make it out to be in their heads. I say this with the experience of training people all the ways from 4 years old to people well into their 60s. And they are all able to enjoy Brazilian Jiujitsu with no issues.
That said, you’ll have to be sure that you know why you’re training and focus on that. If you are a little older. You're not going to be the next adult age BJJ world champion. That ship has sailed.
So it's important to keep your goals in mind and just be the best that you can possibly be.
The biggest thing I would share with you if you are a littler older and wanting to do BJJ is simply just do it.
Don't let time pass you by. I've had so many people come into our gym to train Brazilian Jiujitsu and they're so frustrated that they started their BJJ training so late. Even though they thought about doing it years ago.
The worst thing that will happen is that you won't like it. And if that's the case. No biggie.
The best thing that happens is that you absolutely love it and you have a new activity that you can grow and love for years to come.
So just take the step and stop worrying about being too old for BJJ. Start training!

Am 61 and a three stripe purple .. Been training in jiu jitsu for 9 years and am also cross training in judo as a brown belt for four .. I train for strictly self defense and and will stop when they put me in the box .. My only opponent in myself and my goal is to be better than I was yesterday .. My end goal is to be a double black between Jiu jitsu and judo .. Never quit ..

That's another good point., From a self defense mentality/outlook. The street doesn't care how old you are, or what injuries/handicaps you have. Train as long as you can.. Only you can defend yourself.

I’m just going to keep going. My son has a purple belt. My relationship with my son is amazing lately because I called him after class with questions that now he calls me. I’m grateful for every experience with my team and my opponents when I spar because when it’s hard later in the week my body suddenly has like a superpower. I have strength and flexibility is growing so fast for me. If I compare myself to my teammates I suck. If I compare me to two weeks ago, I’m a freaking force.

Thanks for the kind words of wisdom. As a 31-year-old man, my generation grew up thinking that we were supposed to be married, have a career, possibly kids, and everything figured out by now. I understand that school of thought isn't exclusive to my generation, but I think it's true that most people my age think being 30 or older is too old do anything new and if you wanted to have accomplished something at this age, then you should have started in our 20s. Well, I'm almost 32, and I'm thinking of starting BJJ to be healthier and teach myself some self-discipline in all aspects of my life. I like seeing these videos and comments because it's just as scary to me that I'm beginning my professional career as an older person as it is that I'm starting a new martial art having never trained or done any martial art before.

I started BJJ at 31 year average Joe who ate too much fast food and hardly exercise. Once I start training BJJ, I started eating healthier and getting a bit more exercise outside of BJJ. Few months later, I dropped 15 pounds and people noticed. It wasn't fun at first training against athletic guys in their early 20's, but everything is okay once I made it through the first few months. I was so happy when I finally got my purple belt at age 37. All I can think about was "I almost nearly killed myself for this belt". lol

I'm 40 years old, and soon to be 41. I just started bjj for the very first time ever 2 weeks ago. I'm still pretty anxious about going, but this video and seeing everyone's comments does make me feel a bit better. I feel SO behind everyone I train with and tire out quicker, but I know it will get better the more I go. I think it's about going in with the right mindset and intention - just to learn, improve physical and mental state, meet new people, and have fun! I know it's a long road, but to anyone else my age or older reading this, just go for it! Wish me luck.

Great video. I started bjj at 36 and the thing that most bothered me was an old muscle injury. When I was younger, I could work through it- but age makes that more difficult. I wanted to go everyday to train, but took it slow at first to better condition my body. I think this has helped me stay with it and avoid a more severe, bjj-ending injury.

Love this one as I'm in my 40s and have done martial arts for years and being a decent striker but the ground game was lacking. Knee injury and achilles issues aside, I can't jog anymore but this fits for serious cardio and learning something new. I'm a 69 year old black belt, and have been doing BJJ for almost 25 years. I am doing fine. Here are my recommendation: Train with technical people with higher belts. Everyone gets it, that if you are older it will be a pretty uninteresting time if they rely on strength and speed rather than technique. Partnering with lower belt is not advised unless they are very aware. Otherwise they might do something that creates an injury without intending to. And it is critical to not allow aggressive chokes. The carotid arteries are less elastic and might have plaque. Plus, don't get thrown hard and don't try inversions. If you know you are in a bad position, tap. I will tap if I have too much weight on my chest, or my legs are getting split apart beyond my limited flexibility, like from some X guards. And respect your body. If you stay sore when training every day, do it every other day. It you stay sore when you train every other day, train every third day.

It's changed my focus in relation to BJJ and to be honest ive become a lot happier training.

Plenty of people start BJJ and judo in their late 40’s and 50’s and get black belts. You might struggle to compete and roll. But you can be a great technical player and help others.

In seriousness, I'm 44 and I'm glad you made this video. I've watched a lot of your stuff and I am going back and forth about it. Part of my hesitation is that I am very out of shape, something I'm currently working on. The other issue is medical. I have a mechanical heart valve, and because of that I am on a blood thinner. Which means I bruise super easy. If it was just me I'd go on my way and hope for the best. But I'm married and have three kids. Because of that I want to be able to defend them if the need arises. I'm pretty honest with myself in that I've only ever been in 2 fights in my adult life and if I had to defend my family it wouldn't go well for me. So that is a driving force.

Big fan Chewy, complete new white belt but a big fan of your channel (though you do ramble a bit sometimes). The gym I joined has a really great atmosphere which is what kind of drew me in. Reasons for starting Jiu Jitsu, it was something I always wanted to do, was in late teens and early 20's and watched UFC1 via the actual PPV. I was in the Army 24 years and despite one ACL reconstruction am in pretty good shape for my age from years of PT. I was slacking off for awhile and wanted to find something physical that I could enjoy outside the Army. I am only a few classes in but I think I am hooked. It is physically demanding but nobody pushes the noobs, as somebody that has done PT most of their life but slacked off alot the last few years I realize it's a matter of conditioning. Just a few classes in and I am already feeling alot better. Anyway I got my first few rolls today with a more experienced white belt. I was debating whether to roll but I just went for it. Didn't spaz but obviously didn't know what to do in some situations. I think I have a basic understanding of elbows in, framing, bridges, etc. I'm also coming into this with alot of humility, understanding that I don't know what I don't know. I am smart though, half of what I know now I learned on UA-cam, but obviously you can watch something but until you execute you don't really know. So originally I was avoiding the open mats, I am a white belt that does my research so I know the different schools take different philosophies on rolling, some make you wait, some your rolling day one. I think we can all agree that rolling is what validates BJJ. I might not know BJJ yet but I do understand training concepts as a 24 year military veteran. Anyway now I am rambling like you;) Anyway the point is my first rolls, I got side position, tried to mount, but got shut down. Next roll I got mounted, tried to trap one side to sweep, got caught with a sneaky gi choke that I didn't even realize was there until I was choking. Complemented the guy, really decent dude and then he shared the technique which I really appreciated. So obviously I went home and looked up mount escapees and side control mounts.....and then I watched one of your videos where you advocated for situational rolling and I think I am going to take that to my next open mat, situational rolling based on the fundamentals taught in any individual class, I really think that could work, especially for us white belts that don't know what to do in every situation. I also plan to focus that on whatever the days lesson is, armbar from mount, sweep etc. Just the days lesson with increased resistance, thanks for socializing that. So thanks, and I only posted on this video because I am a 47 year old white belt and am really enjoying myself for any older people that are worried. Nobody is going to push you to hard, somebody gets too spazzy tap out, cardio not there?, step aside a minute, you are completely in control, and though they are probably out there everyone I have met has been absolutely top quality human beings.
