We were taken on a school trip to see this film in London because we were doing R & J for O-Levels! Great film and very haunting music. I had forgotten they also put words to it.
My wife and I have been married for 35 years. When we were engaged, we had this movie on VHS tape. We’d watch it all night, with a jug of cheap red wine, until the sun rose. When we were Married, on our Honeymoon we went to Italy. One stop was in Verona, where we stood under the balcony of Juliet. That memory can never be taken away. I Love You! ❤
There are other versions of Romeo & Juliet. This 1968 version is to me by far the best. You can feel the whirlwind of emotions portrayed by the characters; the excitement, the anger, the fear, the love, the conviction. The other films just don't have that by comparison.

Heartbreakingly beautiful and tragic. I saw this in the early 70's when I was a a teenager, with my first girlfriend. Almost 50 years later and it still affects me profoundly. I still love that teenage girl. Miss you everyday Val. Maybe we can make it work in the next life.

This version of Romeo & Juliet is easily the best thanks to excellent performances by Hussey and Whiting in the lead roles but also by extraordinary support cast work. Milo O'Shea's Friar Lawrence and Pat Heywood's Nurse are beyond remarkable. John McEnery's Mercutio and Michael York's Tybalt are the definitive performances.
The actors in the crowd are really good and subtle. If some girl was fidgeting behind you trying to peer over your shoulder, you might turn and glance over exactly the way they turn and look at Juliet.

That's not what Romeo and Juliet is about. Ram and Leela: Love and Bullets is a better modern Romeo and Juliet adaptation. Why? Because it isn't treated as a parody of Shakespeare. I don't understand why Shakespeare should be boring and hard to understand when theater was meant for everyone including the illiterate majority, it is made in a way to be understood by everyone.

@shell When I first saw the 1996 version as a kid, I was confused why the boy (Leonardo) was so much more beautiful than the girl (Claire Danes) lol. I think it's because Leonardo's features were very delicate while Claire has more mature and broader features so she appears older so I was confused why the girl looks older than the guy (as I kid I assumed the guy was the older one, which is typically true). I actually thought the same about Leonardo and Kate in Titanic. 😂

Well, the melody is indeed touching. Personally, tears come to me almost every time I hear the song. But considering lyrics I wouldn't say it's an anthem to love, quite the opposite. It's clearly a heads up to reality, reminding how ephemeral the beauty of youth and their passions are.

My mom and dad are Romeo and Juliet they met at the age of 12 and got married at the age of 18.They have 3 children.They loved each other.They married in 1960.In April 2020,my dad died.They were together for 60 years.
I am overjoyed every time I see this video! I am profoundly blessed! Not only did God grant me my prayer that I find my Juliet, I dated and married my Juliet and we are now married 48 years! I was 16 and she was 17, when we met, just like the 2 actors in this 1968 movie! And we dated at the end of 1970! My advice to parents is to don’t easily dismiss love at a young age! Everything was stacked against us! But we stayed together and thrived! To God be the glory! True love is love, whatever age!

Saw in the 9th grade. They met that night, married next morning, Romeo is banished for killing Tibolt, that night Romeo & Juliet spent the night together. By the 4th day he thinks she's dead. He drinks poison & she stabs herself. All this took place in about 4 days. The movie is still a classic. I went &bought it, so I watch it a lot. I can almost say both of their lines by heart now. NO other movie can replace it. The remakes will never compare. There was never a tale of more woe than of Juliet & her Romeo. That's not the exact phrase. Peace & Love !!!!

I was 15, the same age as Olivia, when my 9th grade English class made this a class trip. We saw it at Essex Green Cinema, West Orange, New Jersey. I bought the soundtrack album and listened to it over and over again. I'd rerun the movie in my head to the soundtrack. Nino Rota also scored The Godfather, and you can hear his signature in this very scene. At fifteen, I didn't appreciate the costuming, but oh my, just look at the details in their full glory. I love the use of the reds for the hot-heated Capulets, and the muted blues for the Montagues. I have this film on DVD and it is the only version I will watch. It was the first time that actors played the parts that were more in line with Shakespeare's characters ages. This film is a masterpiece of sight, sound, and acting.
This movie and all of this soundtrack are pure gold and pure art ! This is the definition of beauty. And Romeo and Juliet are both amazingly beautiful.

I fell in love with this version of Romeo and Juliet at age of....I guess....13! It was a time, where were just 3 channels to choose on tv. My parents were at friends in the neibourghhood and I discovered it late at evening. From then on, I was a huge fan of that movie and of Shakespeare as well! I searched my whole youth for this film again, but can't found or missed it on tv, and just 5 or 5 Years ago, I ordered the DVD! Finally I'm able to watch it, whenever I'm in the mood! :-)

My English teacher made us watch this movie back in 10th grade in 2015, and ever since coming across this movie I have been so in love with this scene, its heartbreakingly beautiful, the attractive young casts at the time, the song, the lyrics especially, along with the youthful cadence that shivers the soul. I agree with both of you! I also love the scene they chose to put the song in because: it is played at their very first meeting, but he is actually "spoiling" their future on the background with that incredible song and that's genius! 🌼

Saw in the 9th grade. They met that night, married next morning, Romeo is banished for killing Tibolt, that night Romeo & Juliet spent the night together. By the 4th day he thinks she's dead. He drinks poison & she stabs herself. All this took place in about 4 days. The movie is still a classic. I went &bought it, so I watch it a lot. I can almost say both of their lines by heart now. NO other movie can replace it. The remakes will never compare. There was never a tale of more woe than of Juliet & her Romeo. That's not the exact phrase. Peace & Love !!!!

My favorite movie song ever since i was 11 years old!
I was 15, the same age as Olivia, when my 9th grade English class made this a class trip. We saw it at Essex Green Cinema, West Orange, New Jersey. I bought the soundtrack album and listened to it over and over again. I'd rerun the movie in my head to the soundtrack. Nino Rota also scored The Godfather, and you can hear his signature in this very scene. At fifteen, I didn't appreciate the costuming, but oh my, just look at the details in their full glory. I love the use of the reds for the hot-heated Capulets, and the muted blues for the Montagues. I have this film on DVD and it is the only version I will watch. It was the first time that actors played the parts that were more in line with Shakespeare's characters ages. This film is a masterpiece of sight, sound, and acting.

It was a time, where were just 3 channels to choose on tv. My parents were at friends in the neibourghhood and I discovered it late at evening. From then on, I was a huge fan of that movie and of Shakespeare as well! I searched my whole youth for this film again, but can't found or missed it on tv, and just 5 or 5 Years ago, I ordered the DVD! Finally I'm able to watch it, whenever I'm in the mood! :-)

This is so wonderful! My wife and I met at the same age as these 2 actors, 16 and 17, although she was older and I was younger. I can hear her say some of these lines”Saints don’t move” and holy palms are for palmers’ kiss! We are now married 47 years in May! Who says that Romeo and Juliet doesn’t have a happy ending??👍
Me and my boyfriend also met at those same ages. 16 and 17. He was younger and I was older and although we are almost 22 and 23 I’m so glad we found each other. Though one thing we have that Romeo and Juliet didn’t have is our family’s support.
@@k8magic6 Glad to hear your story! We had family support from my future wife’s parents, but my parents were difficult. I think that the problem was that my mother was still very young when we first dated (42) and had just had her last child. My Mom was only 25 when I was born!

I'm with you. I'm in my mid sixties. I was a rocker, and still am to a degree and funk. I'm learning how to appreciate this type of music. I like listening to soundtracks from older movies.
My English teacher made us watch this movie back in 10th grade in 2015, and ever since coming across this movie I have been so in love with this scene, its heartbreakingly beautiful, the attractive young casts at the time, the song, the lyrics especially, along with the youthful cadence that shivers the soul. It always touch me in a way every time I watch this scene while singing the song
I love romances, but most aren't that interesting. But this performance is just brilliant! You can FEEL the jitter in their bodies and voices, they act like real damn teenagers in love!! AND GODS THE MUSIC!!
