He was truly in the zone.

I'm not gonna lie.... I am horrible with this type of interviewing, but I think I am a hard worker and a quick learner. I have excelled and exceeded expectations at every job I have had. I miss the old way of just discussing my experience and what I can bring to the table instead of trying to nervously come up with a time when... and be truthful at the same time.

      @SSchithFoo 7 років тому +59

Yeah it's frustrating. Almost as if they want to hire actors and actresses who can BS their way through the interview even for highly technical positions like software development, rather than people who actually get work done.

Kristen Crane I agree! It took me 3 tries to land this one job because I suck at these types of interviews but after finally getting hired and having to leave 2yrs later, they left recommendation letter saying they'd hire me a 100 of me if they could lol.

Kristen Crane The key is to just memorize a specific set of stories and fabricate and fluff them up enough to make yourself appear as a good candidate.

Great video - this is how I explain it to my supply chain students:
    Interview Questions asked
    1. What do you consider to be your greatest strengths?
    2. Have you ever had any failures? What did you learn from them?
    3. Have you had difficulty getting along with a former professor/supervisor/coworker and how did you handle it?
    4. Why should we hire you rather than another candidate?
    5. What job related skills have you developed?
    6. Describe your ideal job
    7. Why did you choose your major?
    8. Give an example of a situation where you had to provide a solution to the employer?
    9. Do you prefer to work under supervision or on your own?
    10. Describe a time in which you were forced to multi-task.

Make sure you get names of interviewers, years employed and connection made to assist with follow-up letter/email.
    Star Method:
Tell me of a time when you had to work within a group where the members did not get along? How did you handle the situation?
    Situation
Interactive Qualifying Project Team. One team member showed up late, or not at all, to team meetings.
    Task
To have the team member participate in team meetings.
    Action
    Called
other team members together to discuss situation. Suggested we
specifically state what we expected of the team member directly to him.
Another member thought if we asked the team member what day and time he
could always commit to would be better. The team decided to do both. We
met with him and told him of our frustration and what we wanted. The
team member apologized. He knew he had been missing meetings but he was
working over 30+ hours to meet his college bills.
    Results
    We
determine that meeting at lunch time would work for all of us. So we
scheduled our meetings for every Thursday and it worked out great. In
fact, we even invited our advisor to join us and he did regularly since
he was free at that time also.
    • Tell me of a time when during updating database you observed a problem? Be sure to include how you resolved it.
    • Tell me of a time when tracking inventory you realized there wasn’t sufficient material for production?
    • Tell me of a time when you were overwhelmed with your tasks and how you solved them?
    Questions to Ask the Employer
    1. What kinds of assignments might I expect during the internship portion of the job?
    2. Why have you stayed with the company for 20 years
    3. Describe your career path
    4. What characteristics do the achievers in this company seem to share?
    5. What is the next course of action?
    6. When should I expect to hear from you?
    Things to research
    1. Mission Statement/Vision
    2. Core values
    3. History; like when business began
    4. Industry
    5. Current events

    Interview do’s
    • Write names down on portfolio
    • Ask for business card
    • Write down every question they ask
    • Find out years worked
    • If connection, like kids, sports anything talked about during interview to aid with thank you letter

The best indicator for future behavior is past behavior fails to take into account change. People MAY have done things that show them to be fit for a job in the past but not turn out to be so much now. People might have done poorly at similar jobs in the past, used this as a a learning opportunity, and then improved themselves going into the future.

I would say the interesting thing here is that the interviewee, even in the second spot, did not actually come in answering everything all at once! He gave a little information, then the interviewers asked more questions to extract the STAR pieces from him. This is really interesting, because this made it feel more like a conversation.

Prepare well and research the job and company before you go in - that will always help you in an interview - it shows you are intelligent and have afforded the organisation your time and commitment before you have even landed the job. And practice your English language skills. Employers want the best person for the job and you need to show them that can be you.

This video was recommended to me but I am wondering why. Alex didn't really answer the question. James didn't really answer the question until the interviewers dragged the information out of him (what did you do next... and then what did you do.... and what did you do after that). Not sure I would hire either of these guys.
But I don't understand why you are recommending not answering the full question as asked. Doesn't that flag up to interviewers that you never listened to or digested the question?

I hate that companies resort to this cliche robotic questions. Would someone please conduct a report to explain how disingenuous the answers are going to be??? You give some fake story that never happened and feel awkward and silly explaining. How about interview people and allow them to freely answer the questions so you can get an authentic response that the candidates can really relate to

If one is actually DOING their job well and correctly, then the next time interviewing there shouldn't BE any problems that you had to solve and get a correct outcome. A correct outcome should be expected from the very beginning. This kind of interviewing is anathema to me...let me tell you about what I good qualities I already offer, not dwell on problems "I" probably caused in the first place by not doing my job...

  • @BlankDVD
    @BlankDVD 13 років тому +17

I hate videos like this, they always show a "worst case" i.e. Alex and then compare him to someone who is dressed well and speaks well. I think its safe to say that 90% of workforce knows all the interview etiquettes, what I want to know is difference between a "Ok" answer and a "Great" answer, not 'a very bad' and just 'good' like in this video. And the interviewers asked questions at each "STAR" step, the interviews I been on, they just let you do the talking.

If you have to lie or embellish on an interview you're just after a paycheck what we need is a cultural attitude change people have to come to work not just for a paycheck but to be someone with the company they have to be company minded where I work I'm studying to be a brand advocate while I'm just a production technician because I care about the company I'm active in things that need to be done helping with velocity helping with people helping improve the quality that's the type of people I hire

I made up a story and I use the same one each time, and get the job each time. interviews are 90% bullshit just like writing essays and it all about how you sell yourself. If I was 100% honest and comfortable I would be unemployed all my life. these interviews do not work and added unneeded stress and pressure to good workers. It's about as fake as politicians getting on TV and making promises they have no intentions on keeping.
