- Cascade Park in New Castle, Pennsylvania, named for an in-park waterfall, was an amusement park with rides from 1897-1982. It was most known for a wooden roller coaster called Comet that operated from 1954 to 1981. However, since its closing, it's been open as a municipal park. Come along as we check out all that remains from the amusement park days, including the old swimming pool, carousel building, and roller coaster footers.

I started going to Cascade in the mid 50’s my Dad was a steel worker and the high light of our families year was the the AF of L and CIO annual picnic . There were 8 of us and Cascade was everything to us! Thanks for the memories little buddy!
The swimming pool closed a long time ago now. I went there in the late 80's. The little waterfall you showed, people to this day jump off that into the water below. When I was a kid I was to chicken to do it. LOL The big event that happens each year there is the Back to the 50's. Also, in the winter they decorate the whole park and you pay admission to drive your car thru it. Good job on the video!
The first coaster I rode was the Comet when I was about 14. Good job!
I think it would be super cool if the park were to be rebuilt. A revived Cascade Park would likely be Bushkill-esque, hopefully it would eventually include a coaster using Comet's footers but that's probably a pipe dream.
Something should be done to revitalize this park and bring it back to its glory days.
I could write a book on my experiences at Beautiful Cascade Park!!! Spent my childhood going there and then on into my teens an adulthood!!! Oh the memories!!! I had a crush on Melba Vesco, Mr. Vesco's daughter!!!
The station that you thought was for the roller coaster was the station for the miniature train ride that went down to the swimming area. I rode that train many times in the 1950's.
I just ran across this video. I just took a walk around this beautiful park. You really did an awesome job showing the old roller coaster footings etc. Thank you!
I'm glad you got to visit!
Rode the Comet many times. We got out early on the last day of school at everyone would go to the park. The back seat would jump up on the track. It was a great ride. All the rides were fun. They had a nice swimming pool at one time . It was part of the park. My uncle walked in the park restaurant at one time. They sold popcorn under the flying rockets. So much fun! Great fries and meatball dug out. They also had miniature golf.
OMG - thanks for posting this. I used to go to Cascade Park all the time as a kid (1969 to about 1978) when visiting my grandparents. My last grandparent died in 1999 and I haven't been back to New Castle since.
Bill T, I hope that this brought back some memories!
Thanks for making this video, little dude!
Thanks for this great video! I just found out about this park and Comet looks incredible!
It really is pretty amazing!
@@amusementnow4416 It is a shame it didn't last and it isn't more well known!
@@coasterdaddy7123 Yes, it is very important to support small parks - Conneaut is a prime example.
@@amusementnow4416 absolutely! I've been there many times and it is such a wonderful place!
I miss the back to the 50s.
same
I visit a few times a year. Will be there in December 2021.
5:05 That stone thing: There were a couple of fountains or wells with what I presume was spring water always flowing. My parents always told us don't drink that water. I remember two of those. The other is shown at 5:34.
Nice job on the history of Cascade! You did your research.
Man, imagine what it would be like if it were to be around today
Swimming pools, French fries w/salt and vinegar in paper cone, polished off with Italian lemon ice. Sledding down midway in winter and ice skating on the lake. Dodge-em cars and the Gorge ride.
Great memories! It's amazing that you got to ride the Gorge!
0:49 What you're looking at here is the original entrance gate. The road behind was not there and the land was not built up like that.
Thanks for the info.
Wow! My father almost got involved in an investment deal aimed at revitalizing this park back in the seventies.
Jerry S, that's very cool! What did it involve?
I'm a 2000's kid, so never really got to experience this place in its hey-day. Drove past it often... Though, I do remember one time during a christmas in the early 00's when there were a bunch of lights and blow up decorations put up here, and we drove in saw them.
Man though, it's kind of sad seeing how abandoned that place is (although a lot of the buildings are in surprisingly good condition). I wonder why it closed?
theres a cave there that i remember from when i was younger idk it may have gotten covered or something.
Do you by chance have the link to the news article or photo page so I can see if there’s any other pictures of the park?
I've been to this park it's nice
Should have mentioned that it's only a fraction of the size now that it use to be. I do believe it originally went all the way up to Lawrence village plaza. But there is a book about it.
Cool! I found the book but am super confused as to why there's an image of Kennywood on the cover.
There's a whole series of books about things in New Castle,Pa I know you can get them in local stores. But the ones online I don't think are the same.
Any sign of rail from a miniature train ride?
No it's all been removed.
@@amusementnow4416 But there was a train ride at one time?
Could you give me a location on this.
Does 40°58'37.2"N 80°19'18.1"W help? ;-)
@@amusementnow4416 I can work with tgat. Thank you
This park is located in the city known as the Fire works capital of america.
Where the gazebo was, use to be a wishing well, big sign said please Do not throw money in this well for it is probably 50 feet deep and no one benefits of this MONEY! However......😂 and I always wonder at the age of 70 now, what's down there!
Thanks for sharing that memory.
Unbelievable, my family reunion used to be held there back I the seventies, so many memories, hated the ride getting there, coming from Ohio. Thinking back tho, it was worth it.
That's great that you have memories from this park!
A shame our Republican government couldn't find the means to revitalize it to it's heyday.
