Ok,now you have to check out one of the greatest Gothic groups of all time,Bauhaus! Peter Murphy is the lead singer of them,as well and they still occasionally tour.
BAUHAUS: Sanity Assassin, Double Dare, She's in Parties, Slice of Life... LOVE and ROCKETS (= Bauhaus minus Peter Murphy): So Alive, Mirror People, Kundalini Express, All in my Mind... TONES ON TAIL (= Love and Rockets minus David J plus Glenn Campling): Go! , There's Only One, Performance... Daniel Ash is the founding member of all 3 and the most underrated, most experimental guitarist. On par creatively with Bowie, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Radiohead.
The other pioneering POST-PUNK band besides BAUHAUS and THE CURE to consider are GANG OF FOUR (formed in '76: I Love a Man in a Uniform live at Old Grey Whistle Test, as BBC show, What We All Want (studio version is a banger), Damaged Goods), and JOY DIVISION but they may be too dark and gloomy at this stage, so I'd suggerst continuing with more of NEW ORDER for a while (Joy Division after the death of singer Ian Curtis). .
@@brianmcmaster5112 Great choices! Tough band to beat all around, creatively and lyrically. The lyrics are always a must read to get the full experience, whether written by Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, or David J. All the most unique at their craft and ingenious songwriters as well. Kevin Haskins is also my favourite drummer.
Peter Murphy was the lead singer of Bauhaus... and they... had the Gothic Classic Anthem of All Time: "Bela Lugosi's Dead." It was their homage to the very strange Hungarian actor who was the first to play Dracula and did so many times; his Dracula persona started to take over more of his real life... he was buried in his Dracula costume! Whether you like it or not (Jay maybe), it is a must must must to get an understanding of the 80s post-punk, alternative and Gothic movements. It is dark, mysterious, creepy and beautiful.
Bela Lugosi is Dead live at RIverside to see how Daniel Ash creates those special effects so unique to Bauhaus and their other extremely creative, experimental bands Love and Rockets (All in my Mind, Mirror People, Kundalini Express, Motorcycle...) and Tones on Tail (Go!, There's only One, Burning Skies..._ Go! was a club hit along with New Order's Blue Monday, Depeche Mode, The Cure... in the 80's and well into the 90's.
For Bauhaus, I'd start with the more accessible She's in Parties, and the banger Sanity Assassin. Cuts you Up is about finding your path in life through all of its twists and turns. I find you in the morning, after dreams of distant signs. You pour yourself over me, like the sun through the blinds. Murphy has some of the most poetic lyircs. I'd follow up with Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem and A Strange Kind of Love. He was often compared to Bowie (appeared in one his moves as well), and Murphy's band Bauhaus pioneer Post-Punk along with Gang of Four, The Cure and Joy Division/New Order in the late 70's.
Peter Murphy is one of my favorite works of art. Beautifully chiseled, those eyes, the voice. I'm so glad he's still with us after his health scare. Glad you explored this one. Hope you do some more!
"A Strange Kind of Love" would be another great, which IS actually on the same album. But Peter Murphy had a lot of great songs..."I'll Fall With Your Knife", "Final Solution", "Subway", "Memory Go" and many more. And YES, they need to check out Bauhaus, the fathers of the gothic rock genre with Peter being the godfather.
"I'll Fall With Your Knife" is a MUST by Peter Murphy. The message is so beautiful. Makes me feel like I'm planting a flag on a mountaintop. Another great is "Strange Kind of Love" - You will LOVE the live version he does with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.
I can't even begin to explain how much Peter's music (solo or with Bauhaus) has affected me. As a goth teenager in the eighties he was my main inspiration (along with Andrew from Sisters Of Mercy) both musically as well as in the way I presented myself.
When it comes to Peter Murphy, sometimes called the Godfather of Goth, I don’t see many reactions to him around. Glad to see the official video, and he definitely played up his dark, moody image for it. I also think he might have been singing a little higher to suit that era. It kind of makes me want to go back to wearing all black.
Even though I am mostly a metal head, this is in my top 100 songs of all-time. So unique, beautiful and addictive. When I listen to this album I always listen to this song several times
As others here are saying, Murphy is best known as lead singer of the band Bauhaus, kind of the seminal Goth band, whose signature song was "Bela Lugosi's Dead" from 1979. This 1990 solo effort from Murphy was actually a big radio hit, even in the US. And yeah, early Cure has a similar atmospheric sound, as does a lot of Echo and the Bunnymen, the Chameleons, early Cocteau Twins, and even The Decemberists' kind of eighties-revival 2018 song "Severed." The David Bowie look and sound that Jordan noted is especially striking when you compare this song to Bowie's avant-garde late seventies/early eighties stuff like "Ashes to Ashes." I think both of you would probably also enjoy eighties Goth-ish band the Sisters of Mercy and their 1983 song "The Temple of Love."
Heck yeah! I note that the line “look for what seems out of place” is interesting. I’ve found that to be the key to noticing that you’re in a dream WHILE you are dreaming. If you can do that- if you can realize you are dreaming - without waking up - then you can fly in your dream. The rules of real life don’t apply. It’s called lucid dreaming and it takes mental effort to get there. But it can be done.

Every day so far in April have been insane coincidences for me and here is another one! Last night I was literally scrolling Peter Murphy, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy videos to teach someone who thought goth was created by Marilyn Manson. My first thought was I'd LOVE to see Amber and Jay react to "Cuts You Up" but they'll never get around to it. Seeing this, I had to do a double take! I saw Peter Murphy live twice and he was stellar, and then I saw Bauhaus at Coachella (two things I never thought possible) and they absolutely stole the show from an unbelievable lineup--NIN, Coldplay, Weezer, etc. etc. etc. Fantastic to see you guys unearth Peter Murphy now, just as you have Echo & the Bunnymen recently.
Whoa... Never thought y'all would actually do this one! Now do Bauhaus. And then Love and Rockets. And then Dead Souls by Joy Division. And then Under the Milkway by The Church.
Peter Murphy is the original Goth god. He was in the og Goth group Bauhaus and he went solo and he still performs. This song is so good and with his distinctive voice style just makes it haunting and beautiful. You need to listen to Bauhaus and Love and Rockets now!

They are Goth music, culture and fandom icons. Cuts You Up is pure nostalgia to me now. Beautiful. Thanks for this one!
One of my favorites. Peter Murphy has many great songs to explore, including Strange Kind of Love, All Night Long, Blind Sublime, The Sweetest Drop and Cascade.
Omg, I loooove and adore Peter Murphy! You have *no* idea how huge this song was on college/alternative radio when it came out in '89. Peter Murphy was already an alt legend as one of the founders (along with Daniel Ash) of Bauhaus, a band that's often credited as being the first goth band. J is spot on with the David Bowie comparison as Peter is heavily influenced by Bowie. Not a criticism at all, just a fact. What a great hero to emulate, right? Peter, whose hair was normally dyed black, is also known for his high, sharp cheekbones. Those 'bones could cut glass! 😄 Love him. Glad you guys enjoyed one of my most favorite songs. 🕊
Peter Murphy is incredible. Dark/goth sounds. He formed the band Bauhaus, which is an amazing band that really brought Goth music into the forefront to America. It was a bigger and more appreciated style of music in Britain but it took time to take foot in the U.S. MTV helped to give them visuals and gain popularity, along with Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Damned and the Cure. But what I always loved about Bauhaus and Peter Murphy is his voice. That deep voice with so much angst and dread cuts you up (wink).
Funny you should mention Bowie Peter Murphy who is also the singer of Bauhaus, was in the atmospheric drama chiller vampire film "the hunger" for a cameo band spot in the beginning in an 80s Goth club where Bowie was hunting for a new victim. Yes. Peter Murphy idolizes David Bowie and his original band Bauhaus covered Ziggy Stardust. Which they played in that movie on top of the song Bela Lugosi's Dead. So get to listening to that cover because it's arguably as good or superior. There's another artist who is much like David Bowie and that is Gary Numan. In what could be described as the Holy Trinity of Bowie there is obviously David Bowie and all of his made avatars of himself. Gary Numan who is like the AI futuristic version of him. And Peter Murphy who is the vampire version of David Bowie.
I might be wrong, but I believe i heard a million some years ago that David Bowie helped him get his start with Bauhaus. A lot of similarities between the two. Bauhaus also covered Ziggy Stardust
6:27 The Godfather of Goth, lead singer of Bauhaus, Peter Murphy! Dude actually came onstage, hanging upside down like a bat, to sing Bela Lagosi's Dead! His voice is mesmerizing!
Peter Murphy was (is, they still perform occasionally) the lead singer of Bauhaus, as well as a prolific solo artist. I think this is from the album "Deep"? He's done some really interesting work solo - the album "Love Hysteria" is great, as is the eastern-influenced "Dust". He was also part of the deeply odd but fantastic Dali's Car with Mick Karn of the group Japan. Other songs to check out - Bauhaus "Bela Lugosi's Dead" (the live version from "Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape"), probably the ultimate goth rock anthem, Bauhaus "She's In Parties", another classic, the Bauhaus cover of Ziggy Stardust (much heavier than the Bowie version), Dali's Car "Dali's Car", (obscure but so inventive and strange), and solo work like "Dragnet Drag", "Indigo Eyes", "My Last Two Weeks", "Blind Sublime" or "Fake Sparkle or Golden Dust?"
The girl I used to work with made me a mix tape with a song by Peter Murphy on the same album, called Marlene Dietrich’s favorite poem check it out great song

I've asked for Shock the Monkey and Rockit as well (they should check out Herbie Hancock's, Ready or Not, as well). They'd like the Rolling Stones, She Was Hot (and the video with Anita Morris) and Undercover of the Night.
If you listen to Bauhaus “Bela Legosi’s Dead”, you have to watch the video. Know that it’s taken from the movie “The Hunger” with Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandon about modern day NY vampires. It’s a great indie. 😁💖
Peter Murphy was VERY inspired by David Bowie. I love this song & his voice. He was also the lead singer of Bauhaus who were kinda the pioneers of Goth Rock. Nice reaction ❤
Like the others have said, now that you're stumbled upon Peter Murphy, you'll need to take a step back in his career to Bauhaus. (Bella is Dead is a great place to start) However, you can't forget about the rest of the band members. You've got to also dive into Love and Rockets (Haunted when the minutes drag is a good place to start) Look forward to the continued content, and greetings from Charleston, SC
I love this song, but never made the connection before that he sounds a lot like the lead singer for "Toad the Wet Sprocket" (band name taken from a Monty Python skit), Glen Phillips. Kind of a nasal boyish baritone. Love both their voices. Check out some Toad sometime. Very good 90's band, mostly known for their soft rock ballads: 'Walk on the Ocean', 'All I Want', 'Something's Always Wrong', and "Falldown'. Thanks for listening to Peter and sharing! Peace from SF
This is goth rock. Peter is soooo good. This whole album, "Deep", is amazing. You should also hit "Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem" and "A Strange Kind of Love". "Indigo Eyes" from the previous album is also a great song.
I adore Peter Murphy! Check out his album, Cascade. He was the lead singer of Bauhaus. Also check out the band Love and Rockets, made up of other former Bauhaus members.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you up!!! I have been begging music reactors to listen to Peter Murphy because I love his music so much. I remember he was indie before indie music. I had ‘Love Hysteria’ and ‘Deep’ when I was in college and listened to him throughout the 90’s (My twenties) I appreciate you listening to the goth Godfather. I love Indigo Eyes, Crystal Wrists, Seven Veils, So Close, so many songs. Special place in my heart for this artist.
This man's the godfather of Goth. If you want to witness something truly vampiric, you can look for his band Bauhaus performing live in Coachella in 2005... You won't believe your eyes!!!
This makes me think of Ian McCulloch (former lead singer of Echo and the Bunnymen) and his song 'Lover, Lover, Lover'. It's a great tune and you should check it out. It's a cover of one of Leonard Cohen's songs.
Gothic rock , post-punk new wave 🌙 🌚. Like The Cure. Siouxsee and the Banshees. Echo and the Bunnymen etc. 80s alternative rock. Moody, dark and atmospheric.
Outstanding. Peter Murphy was originally the vocalist for one of the first (some say THE first) UK goth bands in the late 70s/ early 80's, Bauhaus. Their songs may be a bit too dark, raw and experimental for reactions (although they did have some fun, poppy songs buried in all the creepy, moody soundscapes, ie. "Kick In The Eye", "Spirit", "She's In Parties", "Lagartija Nick", "The Sanity Assassin", etc.). When they split up, the other 3 members of the group- guitarist Daniel Ash, and brothers David J (bass) and Kevins Haskins (drums) became Love and Rockets. Murphy released a couple solo albums (this is from his 3rd album, 1990's "Deep")- this was his first song to get a lot of airplay in the US (at least on stations that leaned toward the alternative genre). I actuallysaw him on this tour - got a t-shirt from it in a box somewhere (although there's no way it would fit me know- well, maybe as a headband). And Jay is right- Murphy was a definite Bowie fan- in fact, a good next reaction for him might be Bauhaus' 1982 cover of Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust".
Ok,now you have to check out one of the greatest Gothic groups of all time,Bauhaus! Peter Murphy is the lead singer of them,as well and they still occasionally tour.

More Goth needed, I agree. I was thrilled when they covered Spellbound by Siouxsie and the Banshees and they have covered Depeche Mode as well.
Sisters of Mercy, "This Corrosion" gets ALL the goths out on the dance floor
Back in the day, this kind of music was called New Wave. The goth moniker came around later, but it's fitting.
Concrete Blonde is another great one.
Would love to see Cities in Dust by Siouxsie & the Banshees on here

One of my all time favorites from Peter. Such an awesome track! Glad you guys liked it!
Check out Sisters of Mercy.
Funny you should mention Bowie
Peter Murphy who is also the singer of Bauhaus, was in the atmospheric drama chiller vampire film "the hunger" for a cameo band spot in the beginning in an 80s Goth club where Bowie was hunting for a new victim.
Great pick, great song. What a commanding vocal presence Peter Murphy has.
Love this song!
OMG, omg, omg! I can't believe you are reacting to PETER MURPHYYYYY!!! INDIGO EYES and END SONG are MUSTS :-D
I might be wrong, but I believe i heard a million some years ago that David Bowie helped him get his start with Bauhaus. A lot of similarities between the two. Bauhaus also covered Ziggy Stardust
Another great song by peter murphy you should check out is “a strange kind of love “
Strange Kind of Love is another good Peter Murphy song...
6:27 The Godfather of Goth, lead singer of Bauhaus, Peter Murphy! Dude actually came onstage, hanging upside down like a bat, to sing Bela Lagosi's Dead! His voice is mesmerizing!
The Icicle Works "Birds Fly" (Whisper To A Scream) 🔥
This song rocks.
The girl I used to work with made me a mix tape with a song by Peter Murphy on the same album, called Marlene Dietrich’s favorite poem check it out great song
This song reminds me of a Thursday night at Traxx in Ybor City (and my friend Krystal.....) in the late 80s.
p.s. I think you've heard Peter Murphy before, because didn't you react to Bauhaus? (he was the lead singer.... 'Bellagiou's Dead'

I've asked for Shock the Monkey and Rockit as well (they should check out Herbie Hancock's, Ready or Not, as well). They'd like the Rolling Stones, She Was Hot (and the video with Anita Morris) and Undercover of the Night.
Oooo! Exciting and surprising! This album "Deep," was on constant rotation in my life for a long time. On my phone still. Here we go! :)
If you listen to Bauhaus “Bela Legosi’s Dead”, you have to watch the video. Know that it’s taken from the movie “The Hunger” with Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandon about modern day NY vampires. It’s a great indie. 😁💖
Peter Murphy..THE man. Legend.
👍👍❤❤Amber this is right down your wheelhouse. I was a big Gothhead and this was our anthem song.
Someone once called Peter Murphy is "evil" David Bowie.
FINALLY!!! Been wanting you guys to do this one for a long time, and I 2nd you covering some Bauhaus and Love & Rockets, too. Woo hoo!
Saw him live recently and he did some of his old Bauhaus hits. He was fantastic. The descriptive word you are looking for starts with "g" ;)
(Bella is Dead is a great place to start)
However, you can't forget about the rest of the band members. You've got to also dive into Love and Rockets (Haunted when the minutes drag is a good place to start)
Look forward to the continued content, and greetings from Charleston, SC
I love this song, but never made the connection before that he sounds a lot like the lead singer for "Toad the Wet Sprocket" (band name taken from a Monty Python skit), Glen Phillips. Kind of a nasal boyish baritone. Love both their voices. Check out some Toad sometime. Very good 90's band, mostly known for their soft rock ballads: 'Walk on the Ocean', 'All I Want', 'Something's Always Wrong', and "Falldown'. Thanks for listening to Peter and sharing!
Peace from SF
Now you have to check out Love and Rockets. The band that followed Bauhaus after they broke up. Try Mirror People or No New Tale to Tell
This is goth rock. Peter is soooo good. This whole album, "Deep", is amazing. You should also hit "Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem" and "A Strange Kind of Love". "Indigo Eyes" from the previous album is also a great song.
Funny, you should say that because Bauhaus did a cover of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust that kicks ass
I adore Peter Murphy! Check out his album, Cascade. He was the lead singer of Bauhaus. Also check out the band Love and Rockets, made up of other former Bauhaus members.
Love And Rockets is a fun Goth band to check out. They covered The Temptations Ball of Confusion!
No Big Deal and Kundalini Express were my favorites from L&R.
One of the great, underappreciated vocalists of the 80s
Beautiful song and great reaction.
Peter Murphy with Bauhaus "Bela Lugosi is Dead" is must
Thank you!
I got this single in record format on my 21st birthday - not to brag but I'm 55 now
First gen, we lived it in real time... I'm 57
@@kelliekretzmer4998 love it !!!
Love this song, love this artist.
This man's the godfather of Goth. If you want to witness something truly vampiric, you can look for his band Bauhaus performing live in Coachella in 2005... You won't believe your eyes!!!
Baby that was so wild.
This makes me think of Ian McCulloch (former lead singer of Echo and the Bunnymen) and his song 'Lover, Lover, Lover'. It's a great tune and you should check it out. It's a cover of one of Leonard Cohen's songs.
Current not former. I have tix for the Bunnymen concert in Dallas next month.
Gothic rock , post-punk new wave 🌙 🌚. Like The Cure. Siouxsee and the Banshees. Echo and the Bunnymen etc. 80s alternative rock. Moody, dark and atmospheric.
he is kinda dark but oh you guys did it! i loved me some Peter murphy! very underated and very talented!
I forgot how much I loved this song.
The first note hits and I'm right back at the City Club in Detroit, 1990-95, until 4 am every weekend. Best time of my life. ❤
The City Club! Good times.
Ah, Peter...
Reminds me of my youth. ✨
Edit: pretty sure that's a cello you're talking about?
Sent here by Musik. You have been WARNED. The Warning Hell You Call a Dream.⚡⚡⚡
Oh hell yeah! Love this song!
Such a great song. He was also in the band Bahaus
