Just going through my old UA-cam videos and watched this again. For anyone that might be seeing this lately, the board is still working great! Not one issue since it was repaired! Still love this board!
@@stacuri1205chicagoours had a faulty power supply! Presonus replaced it under. warranty and it worked great afterwards… but that was 13-14 years ago!
You should see the power supply in the upgrade Ai version. About 4 times the size with fan forced cooling on both sides (they really didn't want to replace overheated PSUs like the classic version 🤣)
Just got this board in 2020. It was given to me by a church pastor in training. It has been used in a church setting for the past 8 years - but, it started glitching during services. I’m looking for a factory reboot vid or a firmware upgrade.
So, I found a UA-cam page where a guy repeatedly replaces/modifies dsp modules and FireWire card on those boards. He says it fixes 90% of the issues. Cheap capacitors and power stuff. Did your board work fine after you got it back?
@kennyasalee Glad I could offer some information that you found helpful! Since I made this video, we've sent back the board and Presonus fixed it by replacing the power supply module. So far, so good! No restarts, no matter what we've tried! I would suggest you contact Presonus about the error and see what they'll do for you! Good luck!
This is not a configuration, I was demonstrating a weak power supply... By turning on as many lights as I could the board started to restart... But I do appreciate you calling me an idiot...
This is most likely due to a manufacturing issue that is a result of a type of environmentally safe Solder called ROHS (Tin and SIlver mix solder) vs. Tin and Lead solder. For ROHS solder, has to be heated at a much greater temp then NON-ROHS (tin and lead). Currently, as of this post have taken mine apart and will re-solder the Power supply connections and the main board connection. Presonus knew about this problem and should have had a recall on this series mixer - Horrible quality control, QC. So, I have this mixer - 16.42., the Firestudio Project and Firestudio mobile. I love the recording software, but their hardware, especially in this mixer line, is awful when it comes to manufacturing and quality control. SHAME ON YOU PRESONUS - for us (your customers) buying this in good faith and having these kinds of problems!!!
I hope you manage to see this comment. I have the exact same board and for some reason it acts like it's over heating. I use it as a sound card to hear the audio for my online computer as well as my offline music computer running Cubase 10 Pro. Lately, if I shut down my music computer, the mixer also ceases to allow audio from any source to work. If I turn the mixer off and reboot it, the display doesn't work and neither does the mixer. I'm hoping you see this and can maybe offer some advice. Last night I forgot to turn it off and also forgot to turn it off this morning. When I got home from work it wouldn't let any sound through. I have a few synths plugged in and they would work either. No audio. The keyboards were fine of course. Sadly, I just might be in the market for a new mixer. This also means that I have to remap a ton of songs that I haven't finished yet. Wish me luck!
Hi Jeremy... that sucks.... I haven't laid my hands on this board now for almost 5 years... not sure if I can help at all?!?! I do remember that when the mixer was abruptly disconnected from the Computer (Firewire cord yanked, or PC powered off without proper shutdown) that the board sometimes froze and stopped music from coming through. I had to reboot the board quickly to get the sound back... (not happy musicians on stage). Have you updated the Firmware to it's latest version? If not, I'd suggest you do so. If it's already updated, than I'm not sure what to tell you. It was a great board during it's time, a few glitches here and there, but I always loved it... just couldn't rely on it... I do wish you luck!
Hello! I have the 16.4.2, and I too use it as an audio card for my PC. I just went though hell trying to unfreeze it from a state that’s similar to what you describe. Luckily, I actually got it to full working order again! What you do, is you turn it on, with it being connected to the SAME computer that it froze on (important) and even though the gr meter is full red, you can still navigate through the menu on the screen. With the mixer now on and plugged into your computer, what you want to do is press the system button under the screen on the mixer and press page down until you see an option to change the FireWire link ID. Select that option and change it from 0 to 1, wait a second, then back to 0. This will refresh the mixers FireWire connection to your computer. HUGE tip for preventing this issue, is to change your playback bitrate in Windows to highest 24bit 44100hz instead of 24bit 48000hz. The mixer can only handle 24bit 48000hz for a while until it just glitches out, but in my experience so far having windows send 24bit 44100hz to it instead solved the freezing issue! To achieve this in windows 10, you go to the sound icon in the bottom right corner, right click it, click on “sound options” and then it’ll bring up a window with sound options. To the right of this window you’ll see a link titled “sound control center”, click it, then among your sound devices you should see your mixer, right click it, press properties, then another window will come up. Go to the advanced tab, and there you will find an option to change the bitrate from 24bit 48000hz to 24bit 441000hz. In my DAW, I have it set to both record and playback in 24bit 48000hz, so when my DAW opens, it automatically changes Windows settings to output 24bit 48000hz instead of 24bit 44100hz. This is fine, because the mixer should be able to handle it for recording / mixing sessions. But once you’re done, you have to go back into the sound control center and change the bitrate back to 24bit 44100hz or else it’s only a matter of time before it freezes again.

One of the odd things is that if I turn my Presonus mixer off and then turn it back on again, if I've had it on for more than a few minutes, the display won't come on so I can't see anything. Jeremy Thornton no problem! I’m happy to help another 16.4.2 owner. I’ve learned through experience that the 16.4.2 would be a great mixer if it wasn’t plagued with software bugs. I still love mine tho haha. Anyway, having the screen not come on when you power on the mixer is odd. Do the other lights on the mixer also not come on when this happens? Ive experienced my mixer just flat out not coming on when I’ve powered it on, no lights or anything, and when I switch it off, it’ll flash the screen and lights for a split second. I experienced this after I was switching my mixer on and off like crazy, trying to get it to unfreeze. I’m honestly not sure what I did specifically to fix this, but I did several things that ended up fixing it. I waited a few minutes before I turned it back on. I changed the power cord to something heavier, a “hospital grade” power cable instead of just a standard computer power cable. I plugged it into a regular surge protector, instead of having it hooked up to my fancy battery-backup one. I unplugged the FireWire and turned on the mixer. I plugged the FireWire back in and turned on the mixer. I unplugged all of my 1/4” cables that weren’t plugged into anything on the other end and turned on my mixer. I wish I knew what fixed it, if any of it even made a difference. I think I remember it just randomly coming back on again after I gave it a break. Another useful tip I’d give for preventing issues, once your mixer is working again, is to respect the boot order. Turn on your mixer first, then your computer. When you turn your computer off, look at the mixer and wait for the gr meter to flash TWICE. Then turn off your mixer. The first flash indicates that it disconnected from Windows, the second flash indicates that it disconnected from the FireWire card / PC hardware. I hope this helps you out!
Oh and one more thing, sometimes when I boot into windows my sound will be a higher pitch. Everything from system sounds to UA-cam videos are pitch-shifted for some reason. To fix this, you simply just change the FireWire Link ID from 0 to 1 and then back to 0, like I described above. No need to reboot your pc or restart your mixer.
yes, did the same thing, had to send for repairs. been 2 weeks without and bummed, even tried new cable and did same thing. Tech says power supply failure.
Use a stabilizer, it maybe could help, try it. This configuration could be set in special ocasion and if you need to restart and appear this error, this video could help you wat u need to do to restart without the error, so, thnks to ca269 for this !
its really not a matter of using condenser mics for all the channels. it shoudnt be like that. after i saw this problem, i tried it with mine and it does the same. i sent mine to presonus for them to fix it. had to fight for it a little bit coz im out of warranty. but presonus was reasonable and they fixed it. everything is working great...
13thAMG Thanks for the suggestion, firmware was already up to date. Presonus contacted me after seeing the video and they replaced the power supply. Worked great after that!
I bought mine in 3/2011 and no problems until now (18 months later) I'm having this issue and another. The main issue is that the gain reduction meter stays in max level and keeps the board locked up. It won't work at all right now even after trying to reboot without any lights or anything. I'm thinking it's something to do with the FireWire dap card and / or the sample rate configuration. A lot of money spent on this and it's being sent to guitar center to be fixed since I bought an extended w
I know our board, when using FireWire to laptop, will lock or drop out if the laptop locks up or if I unplug the cable. LED's look frozen, but sound still works. The sync is very sensitive. Have you tried another Computer/Cable ?

Good morning, I have a Presonus 16.4.2, when the master controller screen blue I have an output, but when master controller is yellow, I have no output. Any suggestion?
As you turn the device on, if the display is blue the mixer will work well until I turn it off. But most the time the screen doesn't turn blue and stay yellow, when that happen, I don't have an output. I have to keep on turning it on and off to have a blue screen. All happening at starting.
Not sure what to tell you... Do you use the Light that comes with the board? I've also had sync issue with Firewire, make sure there is no firewire connected. If you can turn off any buttons while the board is saying "loading, please wait" (like mute buttons, channel selects, etc). The idea is to reduce any load the board is drawing. After you turn off the lights, wait about 60 seconds before turning your board off... wait for approx. 10 seconds, then try turning your board back on!?!?! Not sure if that will help, or if you've tried this already, but it's all I can think of to start!

Update: June 22, 2015 : Board still working Great! No restart issues have happened since Presonus serviced the board (see comments below)

The video was to demonstrate a weak power supply, by turning on as many lights as possible showed this fact. I wasn't demonstrating an actual setup.

my GR freeze problem is just solved by replacing 3pcs of 4700uf 10v capacitors inside.
