There was a Slayer VHS from like 30 years ago called "Live Intrusion". I remember (I think it was) Kerry talking about guitar speed and he said "Never try to play something you can't do with your voice" or something to that affect. Never in my wildest imagination did I think Matt Garstka would be able to do his drum parts vocally. That's not even right. What the hell?
"We give the most complicated version so that later, the listener can understand what's going on." It's so nice that you think we know what's going on in any song except Physical Education. Solid music. I'll never understand it and that's fine with me. Keep it coming!
Thanks so much for putting in the time to do these. It's great to see the conceptualization explained especially after listening to the song to the point of familiarity.
Gordian Naught would be a cool one to do next. The part where it switches between 5 and 4/4 And the stack pattern changes the second time around is so sick. But on a serious note can you breakdown Asahi? :)
Just incredible work, man! I’ve loved this song since i first heard it when the record came out. Songs like this quench a certain thirst I’ve always had. Thank you guys for existing 😊.
This is my favorite track from the album. Nice video. You probably don't know but here in Brazil everytime we talk about incredible drummers in groups of metal you are named among them. Your work is really nice to appreciate.
I just recently discovered you Matt and I want to say thank you. You are an incredible talented musician and now pushed to the top of my favorite drummers.
This is my favorite song on the album as well. It starts out with this melodic movement, and then it takes off like a Space X rocket! Thanks for the breakdown, not that I am any where near this level yet, but it helps to know how you come up with these songs. Peace out
Hey, Matt. Huge fan. Please make more of this content; it's fantastic and it's really cool to get into the minds of AAL throughout the writing process.
all i can say is very awesome breaking down the composition. being a drummer myself and listening to you guys i always catch myself thinking "man how in the hell did they come up with that". so....questions being answered and mind being blown. been playing over 20 years and ya make me feel like a beginner. amazing and thank you for all that you do brother. 👍🏻
Thanks Matt! Awesome to have an insight into your guys songwriting. The ending is so Javier! This writing process also perfectly explains the ending of Inner Assassins. I love how you guys push each other! Perfect skills and chemistry, I guess.
Loving these breakdowns matt, really brings a new light to these songs. As a guitarist I get caught up with everything tosin/javier are doing, but honestly I think your rhythms are really what make animals as leaders what it is
Thanks a lot for this, it was very interesting and informative ! This breakdown kill first time i listen to it. For me, best song of this new album with "thoughts and prayers". Although I like the entire album so much. You guys are so awesome :)
Conflict Cartography is one I'm very curious about, love that dugudu-digidi dugudu-digidi rhythm section (best way I can describe it) would love to see a composition analysis on that one
This song for me was the hardest to follow. I still liked very much, but was the one i liked less. I have to listen more times. But the others clicked instantly, this album is an absolute masterpiece.
The comforting thought that even MATT GARSTKA makes edits to his tracks on records. We’re all human, we all make mistakes, and that’s the beauty of it. Thanks for the breakdown video, Matt! 🙌🏻
My first time watching your video, and just the way you turned in your chair had me so immersed and feeling ready to learn from the master himself. Hai! Sensei I’m ready. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
You're insane. You're also one of my favorite drummers. Sometimes that's the mark of genius 🤜🤛. I'm going to stick with you on these break downs and hope through osmosis I can get comfortable with odd times
This is def my favorite track on the album. I love that Matt had a bit more creative control/input and got to build on what started out as just an intro idea. I also love the omega edge-lord chair. It must be one of the totems from which he draws his unhuman drumming powers... Bout to buy me one of them janks.
The realization that I'm watching the probable GOAT breakdown his own music behind the scenes in his PJ's is more than my brain can handle at the moment. Hearing the thought process brings whole new context. Sick vid series dude.
Dood, I remember the first time I heard this stack making the delay-like part I was like 'yeah, I see what you did there 😎' and this thing alone made Red Miso for me one of your favorites
I did this in my pajamas:)
Those are some killer pajamas
matt i love you
You and Yogev Gabay need to collab
thall
This is my fav on the album too
"Tosin Squeebs" is my new favorite musical term.
It's so perfectly described lol I can't unhear it now
Sqeeuba da deee DAA squeeba da deee doo
SQUEE BUH DEE.....SQUEE DEE...
"You should do like, a massive fill"
"I didn't prepare that..."
"But dude... you're Matt Garstka"
That was the best part haha
"but dude, you're matt garstka" lmao
12:09 finally he's reached a part that he can't drum vocally, he is human!
12:15 OKAY NEVERMIND
Kinda sounds like Porky Pig
The "Ts Ts Ka tum tum tutum" drum groove has been living rent free in my head since the album came out
Fr dude. I'll hear one open hi hat hit, and it just re starts in my head lol
Bridge-ca-ble Bridge-ca-ble , Bridge-ca-ble Bridge-ca-ble
Facts. And the little cymbal fills gimme goosebumps
Or the little thing he gives tosin a nod to
I need a timestamp cuz I got no idea which groove you're talking about 😅
this simultaneously makes me never want to drum again and makes me want to devote my entire being to drumming.
Red Miso is my favorite too.
I think it’s so cool that you’re taking the time to show us a little behind the curtain, Matt. So inspirational.
14:18 - Crazy eyes
19:06 - Pretty metal
25:50 - Javier's Fault
fucking genius 😂😂🤣🤣
Pretty metal moment and all song, wow men.
"It took me like.... half an hour to work out what I wanted to do and get it clean." ... oh, I feel better now.
We humans would take WEEKS to achieve that. I still feel pretty bad lol but i will play drums someday in my life.
The THALL section slaps so hard, great breakdown of the song! Still doesn't make sense to me though :D
Red Miso was an instant AAL favorite for me among the entire discography. So amazing to hear it's your fav off the album!
Dude, @Yogev Gabay would love to collaborate with you on these!
Also, both guys make some pretty cool vocal percussion sounds.
That would be absolutely perfect! 😀
let's make this happen!!!
True
I WOULLDDDDDDD
That's also my favorite. The mini stacks fill got me hooked immediately, such a good vibe.
Me too. Tosin was right about the run on the stacks. Just works so well.

The way you played this on tour melted my brain. That part they said was nuts absolutely was.
"Bro, I think it's too nuts"
I don't know anything about drumming but I'm loving these. would love to hear how Thoughts and Prayers came together
Second this!
Never heard Matt speak. I was expecting a super deep voice. Just like his playing, Matt is always finding ways to surprise me.
To me this is like a magician revealing their secrets
"We give the most complicated version so that later, the listener can understand what's going on." It's so nice that you think we know what's going on in any song except Physical Education. Solid music. I'll never understand it and that's fine with me. Keep it coming!
Bro thank you for taking the time to make these videos, amazing job. Whole album is golden start to finish.
Thanks for these breakdowns, they're invaluable 🤯
Dude! You're the best! Thanks for all this new content you give us. It's never enough!
You’re the best, Matt!
Thanks so much for putting in the time to do these. It's great to see the conceptualization explained especially after listening to the song to the point of familiarity.
Love these videos, please keep em coming!
Thank you Matt! Love all the work you do!
I love all this breakdowns Matt. Sick!!
This song is absolutely incredible. Next level drumming. Haven’t been able to stop listening to it since I heard it for the first time.
These break downs are amazing! Thank you. Really gives me good insight into the writing process.
Keep posting the videos Matt you're awesome!
It's my favorite song, too! Thanks for choosing it as the next track to talk about, the video was very insightful!
It's great to see how they learn from each other and have respect to as a musicians
I enjoy these run-throughs thoroughly!!
This is my favorite track from the album. Nice video. You probably don't know but here in Brazil everytime we talk about incredible drummers in groups of metal you are named among them. Your work is really nice to appreciate.
Such a cool video. Wish more bands went in depth like this
This is definitely my favorite song on the new album. Well done.
This is really cool! Awesome to see someone with your skill break it down for us earthlings
Thank you for making these vids, brother. Looking forward to the next one!
That groove is pure genius, one of the grooviest things I've ever heard. Please marry me.
I just recently discovered you Matt and I want to say thank you. You are an incredible talented musician and now pushed to the top of my favorite drummers.

Awesome video! Can’t wait to see more. Would love to hear about how blast beats got in to some of these tracks. Incredible album!
I love these
Just an electrician in SW VA that listen to y'all all the time. Y'all rock!
My favorite song of the year so far! 👍👍👍
Matt blew me away when I saw them live. Star of the show.
This one is my favorite off the album too. After seeing your play through on meinl I fell in love.

I remember you saying years ago that you wished you wrote in the same room more, very cool it happened 🤘
the open hi-hat part of the groove reminds me of the open hi-hat motif in schism during the verse.
I love that shit what a great song you guys put out
Really digging these composition videos. I love seeing how other drummers brains work. Cool beans.
Thanks Matt! Awesome to have an insight into your guys songwriting. The ending is so Javier! This writing process also perfectly explains the ending of Inner Assassins. I love how you guys push each other! Perfect skills and chemistry, I guess.
Loving these breakdowns! Would love to see Micro-Aggressions as well!
so cool to hear about their creative process.
One of my favorite songs off of the album!!!
I love listening to information I can’t understand but know I enjoy
i love this videos
11:10 Almost peed my pants when you said "He eats it up" at the end. Totally dig your sense of humour as well as drum work.
Loving these breakdowns matt, really brings a new light to these songs. As a guitarist I get caught up with everything tosin/javier are doing, but honestly I think your rhythms are really what make animals as leaders what it is
More please! Do it for all your new songs!!!
Thanks a lot for this, it was very interesting and informative ! This breakdown kill first time i listen to it.

“Tosin comes in with his squeeps”! Hilarious, thanks for the insight, and man you guys are functioning on another level!
Legend.
Legendary intro for a legendary song.
Definitely my favorite song off the album. That glitchy intro is so cool
I would love to see more of these!! I’d really love to see one for Conflict Cartography
the squeebledadeevs got me.. haha. Amazing work as always!
My favorite as well 😊 Would love to see it live
Loving these videos, man! It would be cool if you demonstrated some of the more difficult parts on the kit as well
awesome, keep these coming please! id love to see gordian naught breakdown in the next one
Thoughts and Prayers or

Those 3 groups of 5 are so incredibly satisfying, I love them. It's like jazz tripplets and Tool 5/4 beats had a baby.
Really interesting!
Basically super nice ;)
Love you guys
I dig that blue|red painting under that snare in the background.
Your shirt looks so awesome!
Dood, I remember the first time I heard this stack making the delay-like part I was like 'yeah, I see what you did there 😎' and this thing alone made Red Miso for me one of your favorites
Red Miso most def my fav too!
Great video bro!!! Thank you 😊
Is my favorite too Matt. Red Miso and Monomyth❤ And that ending of Red Miso is SO INTENSE!!! GODDAMMIT!!! Always gives me goosebumps!!!
