Outside the Gate - The most unpopular album by Killing Joke, but I still love this one! Remember travelling through Spain by bus and couldn't turn it off. Watching the endless fields, the ocean, the hills and the wonderful landscape while listening to this track....
Very clever band, musically and lyrically, as time passes and instruments and there sounds change, so has the band, just going through KJ tracks tonight, most for the first time for me, and i remember old school mates being into these back in '79. You have got to give this band the credit they deserve.
This is what Faith No More will try to reproduce at the beginning of the 1990s. This song in particular on that LP is ambitious but the instrumental they added at the end, is self-indulgent.
I'm not sure why everyone keeps insisting this and 1000 suns are such bad albums. I feel like something about them hits too close to home with regards to what really distinguishes pop music from "alternative" music. The latter is really not more complex than the former, usually. That doesn't mean it can't have a fascinating sound or tone or atmosphere. I feel like 1000 suns and this album took that kinda logic to it's morbid conclusion and subsequently people listening to it made them feel embarrassed. It makes people realize the emperor has no clothes. Especially 1000 Suns just sounds like standard early 80s neo romantic new wave ish pop fare, but to me that makes the impression it leaves all the more haunting. It sounds almost endearingly naive but in a way that fits in the themes of culture pessimism and the almost schizoid atmosphere, giving the listener a kind of chilling, dazed sensation. I dont want to end up sounding like I'm comparing it to romantic classical music but maybe that's the point: the shallowness of the pop arrangement somehow makes it feel all the more desolate.
BTATS and NT actually were way more musically and thematically complex than any album KJ had ever done before that time. With BTATS and Night Time, they had these instrumental sections (Darkness Before Dawn, Love Like Blood, Twilight of the Mortal) that took up a good chunk of the song (and there's one in this song, too, @ 6:00 to the end...) -- that's neither very punk or very pop. It's very "prog rockish". Reminds me of the stuff prog rock bands from the 70s would do in 80s. Like the Alan Parsons Project)Their songs also built actual tension, like in 2:30 of Adorations. It's actually pretty cool how they did that with just one riff.
If you like this, check out “The Courtauld Talks” circa 1989, which is essentially a spoken-word album. Jaz Coleman discusses in depth about the inception of the odd meter phrasing contained in the song “Outside The Gate.”
kieron63 It’s not a great album, but it’s pretty arresting. It could nearly be a phenomenal album and many moments on their own are fantastic. Something about it all together just doesnt quite land though and feels like it’s trying too hard. I hate the way ‘critics’ encourage people not to listen to it though, it’s a hard album to just dismiss. Even if not all of it is enjoyable
All the same here. Also my fav' band but only since june '80, so a little biased too... The last tour (saw them in Paris) was just great with all that good old memories.
Its an interesting piece of music but because it went under the banner Killing Joke & lacked Paul Ferguson & Raven people ( including myself) were not happy . The other thing as well they were using the same sort of mid 80s production as Go West/Aha & that was unacceptable for such a unique & mega hard vocal/ keyboard/ bass/ guitar/ drums combo as Killing Joke. This is true because within a few months they recruited Martin Atkins & tried Andy Rourke from the Smiths!! to create Extremities. By some crazy chance through a friend who stumbled across them I saw Killing Joke rehearse at Putney studios with Andy gone , some guy called Taif & Dave Koverchec? on keyboards. Myself & two friends were sitting on comfy sofas spliff, whisky listening to them rehearse. They were all very nice to us and good humoured . They did the song Extremities and said to us " Ok what do you want us to play? My mate shouted out " Wardance" and they proceeded to do it . Jaz Coleman said to us " Was that alright?" I repilied " Put it this way mate , I m with my two mates watching my favourite band just play Wardance sitting on a sofa better than my one at home with a spliff in my hand & your asking me if its alright?? Cos its alright!!! Its like fuckin Christmas Day & Jim Will Fix it ( before we knew he was a pedo) rolled into one!" That generated a lot of laughter in the room" . The rest of the evening was surreal , just how you want it to be. Only some food & a cab fare home could have topped it. Rest assured I am not bullshitting.
wow um I can't profess that I've been a KJ fan as long as some others but I do agree this is great!!! weird and all over place however the last few minutes is a perfect summation to the "pulpit warns" that's peppered throughout the song, made my head spin... right fuckin on KJ I love this band
wow this brings back memories :) i loved this album i was only 16 or so and i played it constantly!!!! If you like it you should try 'the the' too also a great great band. thanks for posting i'm gonna go buy it from amazon now! (weirldy this album isnt on itunes - wth!)
sure very gfar from the band i love. here Jaz went too crazy Geordi left cause of his huge ego etc. that tells it all. last lps are on the contrary great again.
It's definitely a good song but personally I find the delivery and execution a bit rough and I don't like the album much. I'd be very curious to hear them re-record a few songs from it some have potential and I'm always reminded of how much better they could have been.

Good point. It spunds similar.
6:44 perfection...

Brighter than a Thousand Suns is the best album for me by far.
stargate669 LOL what's that supposed to mean? No I mean honestly, Im intrigued
Or maybe it just comes down to the fact that a large percentage of Killing Joke's following seem to have an aversion to obvious melody!
this is my favourite album

the composition of this song is actually much more intricate than most of the stuff they had produced earlier

Wow--I've been listening to these guys since the 80s and somehow missed this gem. Shame on me. Thank you diazepan.
Utter brilliance...nuff said.
Got this on record, it's wierd. I like it.
As an aside…You can hear every word of the lyrics on this album…Wish that was true of all music.
Great song! Nothing like it.
Wishcraft4u2 perfect summing up of this album. It's a stunning piece of work as was 1000 Suns. I really can't knock either.
True it is their weakest album but i regularly go back and listen all way through. Even as a duffer it pisses over most other bands efforts!
SHUT UP ASS-HOLE

Couldn‘t agree more! Still my favourite!

Bonkers but brilliant. Adore this album

sure very gfar from the band i love. here Jaz went too crazy Geordi left cause of his huge ego etc. that tells it all. last lps are on the contrary great again.
great album, nuff said. can you dig it? each to they're own
This tune would make a great James Bond-song. It has that certain atmosphere about it.
Before I put my glasses on that picture looked like either Jack Kerouac or Gilligan.
I agree, quality with SPHERE
@DimePeril Holy shit, you're right!
Antigone quote? Antigone must be the opposite of having left the building.
We are better than this world.........
And MUCH worse
It's definitely a good song but personally I find the delivery and execution a bit rough and I don't like the album much. I'd be very curious to hear them re-record a few songs from it some have potential and I'm always reminded of how much better they could have been.
apparrently their worst, got everything n maybe not as good. Am biased from '78!
