I love this song. It's like a villainous theme for a whole country. The aspects you hear from sincerely patriotic songs mixed with those dark synths really make it come together.
Reminds me of the small soldiers villains but big boys instead of toys 😂
A villainous theme for a villainous country.
@@aedes947 Not so much a villainous country as a country with a foreign intelligence agency that's out of control.
@@aedes947 I'll take the U.S. over China and Russia any day. For a global power, it could have been much worse.
Am I the only one who thinks that synth riff sounds like a corrupted version of the synth from "Jump" by Van Halen?
RIP the two members of Killing Joke
Geordie Walker (December 18, 1958 - November 26, 2023), aged 64
Paul Raven (January 16, 1961 - October 20, 2007), aged 46
You both will be remembered as legends.
Their ages are mirrored numbers, kinda cool.

This song sounds like a musical/rock opera and i love it because it's soooo different from any other type of music.
Jaz coleman is a true genius and a great musician and performer, and the rest of the band is also great ofcourse because
they all made had their part in it and they are still together after way over 40 years in the music busines so that deserves my respect.
In terms of style this video is a masterpiece. And in terms of lyrics, this song is still as relevant as when it was made.

This song seriously hits different. The sound engineering here is fantastic, really brings home the point when paired with the lyrics
"Hey Look I Found Some Oil" *Song Plays* *Turns Into A Skull* "AMERICA"
This sounds like it should have been in some sort of epic 80s movie...I'm surprised it wasn't used in any films. It's got a really powerful sound.
It would have fit on the Running Man soundtrack, probably for Jesse Ventura's character.
Great points, both of yous.
There are a lot of Killing Joke songs that easily could have fit in movie soundtracks in both the 80s, 90s, 00's, 10's and even today
Or the soundtrack of social reality as I walk down the street in nyc; which looks like Dubai's sick cousin. Still building so so many ugly super talls everywhere in Midtown down to the Battery. Lord, the so called billionaire's row shows the lack of taste of the superrich in spades. People who live in a bubble - The Corporate Elect - another KJ song.
It belongs in a Verhoeven film

I laugh when people talk shit bout America, when they live ed In a 2nd rate America, and yeah,we have massively fucked up government, but almost all countries in the western hemisphere, all of europe, australia, japan, all rely on us for protection, support and help. If it's so bad,why mfers dont stay in middle east or mexico. At least have the courtesy to speak englizh,i think its fucked that I'm expected to learn Spanish and get a guy at my work as a translator to give instructions to some employees. That's arrogance, when I lived in denmark, guess what? I had to prove I knew enough Danisb to work there. But this country is king of double standards, black pride, brown pride, but white pride? Oh no,dont be proud of your rdd racist heritage.lol, how the cuck do they know? My fam are from sweden, came in 1896,I have a scrapbook w copies of pics, documents, etc. They settled in mckeesport ,pa . discovered killing joke only this year. before knowing them I thought they're just some goth rock stuff. But listening to them I am guessing they influenced many artists. They have this intensity and theatrics that exist in my favorite heavy and extreme music. They approach their music as a religious ceremony or gospel - very emotional and powerful !
They're also communists, что есть хорошо, камрад
Gothic Rock is a top tier genre tho
Hhhhmmmm... I dunno. You may be reading into it too much.
I remember back then when this came out everybody thought they'd sold out and gone mainstream. Now it's almost forty years later and they're still going on strong, more uncompromising than ever!
One of the most underrated bands ever.

Love how manic Jaz's eyes are in this video, cracking tune from a sub par album
The keyboards, (while not intended at the time I'm guessing) are now a perfect example of over the top too cheese 80's keys and it fits the lyrics perfectly, as if it was intended as parody. It's aged into a much better piece of commentary on the era impossible to imagine at that time. Glorious.
100%
Not intended as parody at all, unfortunately. I'm sure Jaz would deny this now, but the band had unexpected chart success with their fifth album, and the next two both suffer from obnoxiously "poppy" production in a transparent (failed) attempt to get radio play. The social commentary has only aged well, like you say...
@ciao214Z I didn't just randomly hear the song and make wild assumptions about the band because of it. I am familiar with their entire recorded output, and there are parts of it (especially the sixth and seventh studio albums) which I really can't listen to. That is mainly because of the production, but that in turn is because the band was trying at that point to replicate their earlier chart success. Once they gave up on this - which took a while - and went back to pleasing themselves, the problem went away
I liken Outside the Gate to Angel Dust by Faith No More. Both albums were very bold, very intentional, and not for the masses.
Social commentary still is pretty valid

True.
Very true. With all these masked, black-clad fascists beating regular people with bike locks.
@@nicholas6252 this aged well lmao.
@@palestalemale8831 Really did. More and more examples.
@@nicholas6252 Yep, in NYC recently, 5th avenue by Madison Sq. Park. I think it was whole bike, not just the lock being used to beat someone. (lol) It's all ops, getting regular people fighting each other like the CIA did in Central America in the 80s...i.e. the playbook for a coup is being used on us, as it was perfected by Anglo-American civilian intelligence in the 3rd World and to a degree on the Soviet Union. The thought is to bring down two giants the same way, but we are not the USSR. This is not our first executive coup attempt either first it was JFK and now this.
In 1962 the attempt to start war with Cuba and thus the USSR was foiled by JFK. We were weeks away from war with Russia via Syria by the end of 2016. Continental Europe and East Asia, greater Eurasia you might say, all benefit from US - Russian confrontation and mutual devastation if not destruction - who benefits ultimately is, at least me, no one but the genocidally suicidal old world elites. Funny that we were intended to take the role of an unthinking battering ram for the British Empire after participating in the World Wars, but after these past twenty years of wars we know better about how they've divided and conquered before. What is around the corner, if the blue bloods steal the presidency or any office, after the people have spoken - will be unlike the way any other people in the world would handle it as we have numerous measures intended to keep imperial powers of any kind from simply buying the legitimate offices and then taking over; 2021 is an interesting time to be alive. Killing Joke is amazing to this day and I know Jaz has expressed love for the US Constitution. It would be some joke if we made it through this because the US didn't collapse and we stayed out of foreign war. No drama in that I guess.
This song was released more than three decades ago but it’s arguably even more relevant now than it was back then! My favorite part of the music video was the quarter moon lol!

This song doesn't need a remake because it's still sounds as if it's made today, and even the lyrics lyrics fit in 2023.
jesus the debate of this not being real KJ is very wrong, this album keeps further the kind of production started on the 2 before, just more deep into complex chords and more melody and arrangment, and yet still is a kick ass records, very dark and ominous , no matters under what name came out.
THANK YOU! Some one who understands this release followed what K.J. had started with on Night Time & followed with brighter then 1000 Suns.
The songwriting and sound is very different to the previous two albums for the most part (despite BTATS getting tamed by the label on its original release). Some of OTG is even kinda prog rock strangely enough, and the whole thing a lot more bombastic. It works for some tracks (America is great) but really overcooks others I think. Even Jaz said at the time he wanted to do something completely different to previous KJ, but later wished it had been released separately
@@theebaydj Yes exactly! I can listen to Killing Joke's "pop" or whatever that some who didn't listen to the whole album at least once kinda dismiss. Tiachuanco has my favorite riff "solo" by Geordie, really unique player overall. Night Time is paranoid and frenetic....sort of need that Cold War Berlin vibe.
It's not about whether you like it or not, the bass player and drummer left the band embarrassed by the album. The progressive chord structures was much better on the following album "Extremeties...".
But this album, its just synths and half realised sketches of songs, 'America' being the most commercial sounding hence this video. It does not follow on thematically from the two previous records at all. If you like it, fine, but please don't try and say this is a Killing Joke Album, or that to point out that it's not a Killing Joke Album is somehow wrong.
