Love the total transparency with the wildlife service, great fishing etiquette! Abiding by the rules is how we keep the fish coming!
What a wonderful day. The parting shot of friends gathered around the table is priceless. You do life good. 👏
Nice to have you back! It's super fun to see these large groups fish and enjoy the dinner. Wish life was like this more often these days. The deer at the end was so cute! 🦌
Love Black Cod! We call them Butterfish in Hawaii but they aren’t from there. It’s always used in Lau Lau, a traditional Hawaiian dish steamed in Ti leaf wraps with pork. Now in Seattle I see Black Cod in the fish markets everywhere. Really expensive but I’ve splurged a few times and cooked it on the grill. Super fatty and buttery, it works great on the grill. The best way I’ve had it was smoked. My god that’s good! I’ve never seen a live fish and wasn’t sure how they were caught or where. Down deep. Great job catching some and reeling them in by hand. That’s exhausting! The few times I’ve fished that deep in Hawaii, we cheated using electric reels, but there’s no way to reel in 20 pound Opaka’paka from 600 feet by hand so…
Great fishing trip Taku and welcome back to the States. 🤙🏼🍻
So cool to see you fishing at one of our favorite fishing vacation spot. Been going there every year for the last 10 years.
Looks like a fun trip! First fish was a North Pacific hake, a common West Coast species caught in a variety of depths, and a predator of young salmon. The others look like the juvenile black cod we regularly catch up here in Washington in 300-500’ over banks and gravel plateaus while targeting halibut. We have plenty of bigger black cod in deeper canyons from around 600-1500’ but they’re mostly caught by commercial fishers and anglers with electric reels. For sure the most delicious West Coast bottomfish.
Not the same Hake we get in South Africa but that one looks exactly the same but just a bit darker.
Not for grilling, batter fry is the best
correct and in CA our adult black cod are more like 2-3000 feet deep. Pretty much all the rec caught black cod, electrics or otherwise, are juveniles 1-3lbs. Hake is super weird and pasty but like the other guy said they fry up great for tacos. That crunchy fry batter with the fluffy fish inside is perfect.
You killed it with the fishing! Loved seeing all the deep sea fish 🎣 congrats!!
I am excited to see what will be in your cookbook. I like your style of cooking. Awesome fishing too.
what a nice welcome home fishing in our eastern pacific ocean! great haul! and another amazing meal! continued blessings. 🕊
so glad you made this video.. I just bought a black cod fillet and a ling cod fillet today right off the boat from a commercial fisherman... i love ling cod but have never tried black cod before. gonna try your recipe
What a beautiful way to really use the whole fish making fin chips! Food looks so good!
Taku owned that trip. Nice to see you catching fish and having the one and only lure of the day. A day to remember. Thanks
What a perfect host. I love watching these videos.
Shelter Cove is amazing.
Taku really went aboard for a year to train under every fishermen master to come back state-side, stronger than ever!
Great video from start to finish.
I love deep dropping. My favorite trips were on the Viking Fleet out of Montauk, NY. Golden and Blueline Tilefish, Wreckfish, Barrelfish, Cod, Pollock, Cusk and other bottom dwellers plus a shot at Tuna. all fishing was done at the Canyons to the East and to the South of Montauk. Depths ranged from 400' to 1200'. My choice of gear was an Avet JX 2 speed spooled with 50'.
Good times and great eating.
You got to appreciate Takus knowledge of fishing wherever he goes.
You were fishing in my back yard. Shelter cove.
“Thank you, Buddy!”
*BOINK*
Killed it out there! Awesome fishery up there! That black cod is so good steamed too!
Nice feature, Tom and Outdoor Chef Life ❤ 👍 heading down to visit California soon.
for those knife jigs, i like to use two big assist hooks on the bottom and one on the top split ring. for rockfish a 9/0 or 10/0. BFT i go to up to 12/0 depending on the grade of fish
West coast groundfish biologist checking in. The first couple fish are northern hake also called whiting not blackcod. The later fish are indeed black cod!
Another great adventure. Nice Hall of fish
Thanks for the new video🥰
Blackcod is the filetmignon of all fish. I've been trying forever to catch one. Congrats.
Another great video . Taku sharing your experience and cooking with others.
Can we talk about the deer running across at the end made me laugh.
Damnnn bro that looks so much fun! So much action! Black cod sounds so good too. You picked a great bait!!
Love your videos it was really nice meeting you at the fisherman's life street fair
Awesome catch for the day brutha's! Good eating. 👍😀
Would love another 45 min video soon❤️
Nice work! For more black cod try even deeper. Hake is still good fish if you keep it on ice. Im a commercial blackcod fisherman in California.
Wonderful trip & food prep! Here in South Africa we have a fish called Hake which looks pretty much like the 'other' fish you caught. We mostly batter it and fry it - though the flesh seems to be more tighter/firmer than the 'Hake' you caught. It is a lovely tasting fish though! Till the next one!!
Holy miso butterfish jackpot!
Welcome Home T&J. Mmm steamed black cod with ginger and scallions Chinese style is major yum.
Butterfish is so good. First had it in Hawaii.
I like the cooking process more than the fishing, great video brotha
Man you was on fire out there. Great video 👍
Sweet content dude! 👌
Thats a good session🍻👌
Nice! I thought you might do Kasu-zuke with the black cod, with sake lees. Miso-zuke sounds awesome.
how did i just watch 25 minutes like it was a youtube short?! amazing thx for the vid!
9:38 Thank you buddy, BONK!
Once you’ve had Black Cod you’ll never be the same
Correction: “You’ll never go back”
I will say the same thing about women 😮😮😮
@@mr.badpitait was right there lol
I wonder if there is anything similar in Australia that we can catch. I've eaten miso cod from Japanese restaurants but trying a freshly caught cod would be awesome
Cringe.
Great meeting you Taku!
Best fishing ever! Restaurant quality food Taiku rocks! Forgive name spelling!
any suggestions on dealing with the pin bones in the black cod? also grilling black cod is the ticket, I end up using indirect heat because every time I do it over the coals I get constant flare ups from all the drippings.
Love that you graded up to the A7 Mark 4 but I guess that 50 mill lens is a bit tight for your use case. If you are staying with a prime, I highly recommend the 35 mill F1.8 from Sony, pretty much the same and should be about perfect for you guys.
Hake is also really popular here in Oz and NZ when cooked right is really flaky and tender.
Always a good time with taku
whew hoo, maybe some northern CA mushroom foraging is in the future? 24:55 oh dear! what a nice surprise!!
Taku the deer in the background smelled your cooking was like dam I want some. I tried black cod but raw
No place like home. Welcome back!
I didn’t realize he was back until I saw the hats from those fish surveyors
Damn I need to try that miso marinade on cod, looked really bomb!
“Thank you buddy.” *BONK*
Cool vid!
Hi Taku. Good fishing bro. I don't if we black cod get in NZ waters. What a nice looking dish. You prepared it nicely. The flesh looked beautiful and white. I expect a fish from that depth would hold a bit of fat. Beautiful dishes, good to see Jocelyn at the table. Great content. Keep safe guys.
7:11 You are pulling a "Die Hard" 🤣
Little opportunity for a cast and blast there at the end. Probably wouldn't go over so well in Cali. Sablefish is just amazing.
My favorite fish to eat!🐟 🍽️
This is a traditional and main dish in England. It will be served to you in the most expensive restaurant and in any eatery in England) You just have to cook potatoes) But eat it all together ...
CONGRATS ON KELP CHILI CRISP GOING NATIONWIDE AT WORLD MARKET!!!!! BOOM! 🎉🤯💣🎉 As a small business owner, I know how amazing of an accomplishment that is!!! Also very happy we have a store nearby. Haha
Oh shit, I gotta go pick up some this week!
Home court misses you taku! Lol😂
Nice deer 🦌 running by at the end! Maybe a venison recipe in the future?
13:45 I bust out laughing I coulsnt🤣😂
Just went to here a couple weeks ago, during negative tide we got the biggest Uni, no one was harvesting it there so we got our limits.
Mann the only rock fish or red snapper I’ve caught bloated from that depth that’s cool
Wow that's a tasty looking fish that black cod. A side note though, when you upload in 60fps, I have to turn it down to 480p so it doesn't eat all my data, so 30fps would work a lot better for me.
That’s phenomenal fishing!!!🤘🏻
That’s a cool looking beer can at the end. Which brand is that?
That one looks like a Hake. We have them up off Vancouver Island, well we have both of those fish, but Hake are more common, both great eating but a little different from eachother. Hake is pretty sweet, but like you saw, quite soft. You can beer batter and fry it for fish and chips.
Hake often has a parasite that makes its meat mushy, almost snot-like, have you noticed that?
@@eugeniocalucci3825 I have not, no. I fish in the Georgia Strait and that area doesn't not suffer with this the same as other areas apparently, probably why I have never noticed it.
That's one Big black cod
I love Hake!!! Great video! Those waves were legit
Bro the things I would do just to eat your food!!!!!!! I literally watch your ty from the trenches to the top
Taku came back stateside and showed them how to fish!
Miso butterfish so good
Taku was trying for the rockfish collector set.
Dang Taku with that kill streak lol!
Where can I find that rockfish identification pamphlet.
Whoo Hoo Taku pulling in some Goodies🎉.
Dinner is gonna be excellent 🐦.

BLACK COD IS DELICIOUS. Oily goodness
Do it brotha!
Requested the Kelp chili crisp at "Wegmans" . My favorite grocery store and the top rated store in the country. They are known for "unique" items.
Yea Boy
For some reason it’s almost impossible to find fresh sablefish/black cod at markets in nyc.
HEY its cookingwithclams lol luv your stuff bro :)
@@highcommander2007 thank you!!
Fancy meeting you here! 😂
@@annekavieira5124 hahaha well, hello
Aloha, that surprises me. I thought you could get anything in New York City.
I know where that is been fishing there when I was a kid a few times pretty sure
We call them hake fish in cape town south Africa
I love shelter cove, watch out for the locals
That’s a come up catching a black cod in in California arguably one of the finest eating fish in the world
How do you like that Hexclad wok?
Man those swells looks like Monterey in April
Hake, how to prepare for eating: make a batter and deep fry in oil. Here in South Africa it is a fish we have with fries or as we know it as fish 'n chips, add salt after been deep fried and sprinkle with vinegar. It is a very flaky fish but not a wet flaky, texture is very nice.
WOW, did you returned from new Zealand?
In terms of fishing it should be “once you had black cod you’ll never want anything else on your rod”
Are you going to get out of SF for Blue fin?
Hey Taku , my name is Johnny , I’m a friend of Oleg Shybinskiy ( Family Fish Killer ) if you have ever watch his videos , you might have seem me , I’m sure you get plenty of invites , but if you ever want to fish with us out of Farallon , or up coming Albacore season , you and your Jocelyn are welcome . Just let us know
Tender is one way to put it, mushy is another.
🌴hey y’all, I’m gonna guess you’ll put about 6-7 of those jigs in the tackle box , always love fish’n trips were your ripp’n lips 👍🏼😄 and then there’s the depth 3-500’ ft you spend 10 minutes just reeling in a fish , it was a great day with good friends-ahhhh 🍺-burrrp 🤣👍🏼
The more silver fish is forcefish/ whiting, related to hakefish and cod.
