Bullet Sizing & Speed - Colt 45

  • Noticed some difference in speed when the same bullet. Different sizing, everything else remaining the same. Wanted NOTto be shooting an oversized bullet, possibly causing higher pressures in conversion cylinders.

    Howdy OR, that was an excellent test! I had an old Colt SAA made in 1880 and it shot .454 bullets much better than .452

      @@Everythingblackpowder Thanks Jake. I’ve heard or read that older ones like the 454. I know the SA’s aren’t supposed to be tack drivers (somehow one of the folks who “should make their own videos” that normally hovers around your channel must have found mine), and reminded me. But, that Uberti 7 1/2 Custer replica comes darn close. Thanks for the comment. O.R.

    I have used the same mold for years and love it! I had better accuracy when i didnt size them. They drop from the mold right at .454. I do use a .452 sizer for .45 acp from time to time. I really like that mold!

    Great video dude. The Lyman Lube sizer Mod - 45 took me back to the early days when I first started casting, I had two of them set up, one for .38's and another for .45. Those we the reason why I started using Rooster Jacket, the lube was Saeco Green and was soft, the Rooster Jacket would harden up over the castings and they would stick together when boxed. great demonstration of what choosing the right sizing does on your video. There are some creators channels out there that I come across that I really like, yours is one of them - Dave

      No reason to thank me, the thing I think is golden is how you show that fine accuracy can be had if you understand that it isn't about spending huge amounts of money on fancy reloading equipment. Firearms are crude, the whole process of what happens in the chamber when the round is fired is crude. I see all this super mathematical process that some people on YT put into their process and don't have any better results that you do, they believe that reloading should be the creation of a cartridge is perfection and the creation of perfection is no error. That's the way they think of accuracy.

    My speed difference is much too far apart for it to be bullets alone, but this does tell me it's definitely part of the issue. I now have two things for sure marked off my list concerning my speed difference. Thanks for putting this video up as it certainly helped me with one of my issues. I love those LEE bullets, but I wish the grooves were a bit wider or deeper. I have several molds to play with in 45 Colt with larger grease grooves for blackpowder cartridges, but If the LEE in all weight classes held more lube they'd probably be the only ones I'd own.

    For specifically my peitta Remington new model army I currently size to .448. I will be doing a barrel slugging video soon for my Remington. Even a friend of mine has the impression that a Ruger old army has a smaller bore the Remington . I intend to address that issue. Did a short asking people to tell me about what they could about the frame and barrel. Had two individuals correctly guess the finished gun, but no elaboration on the frame a barrel itself.

    Very interesting results ! You got very good groups with both diameters, I have a Uberti in the same configuration and with 450 I can barely keep it on the target sheet at that range, .454" was the original SAMMI standard but now these are made to 45 ACP standard with the .452", not sure why my Uberti is so bad, but the only way I can keep it on paper is by powder coating up to 454", it is such a frustrating pistol to shoot, with the C&B pistols they will shoot all day into tiny groups, it does at least give me a challenge. Stay safe! Chris B.

    My Lee reloading book lists the bullet diameter as .454. I recall from 40 years ago bullet sizes for the .45 being .451 or .452. I sent an e-mail and received confirmation from the author of .454. So, when I work up my next group of bullets it'll be with the .454 since that is what I bought.

    Oh.. for my cast bullets and HT coat. I coat then use the LEE sizing dies which go from the base and size into a container above the press. I can ream or sand the sizers to what I want. this is very fast way to size and I have pretty much abandoned my expensive RCBS lube/sizer and the myriad of dies and punches. More pressure means more velocity (pretty much) my percussion loads with bigger balls shows that

      @@oldranger3044 There are several commercial casters that coat using HT and do a good job. I have dozens of molds so when I cast my own I use the HT mix that I have and bake the bullets at around 400 degrees to get a nice coat. The commercial look a tad better but they all perform about the same. I have like 4 colors too LOL I can do zombie green or black or red or a tannish color.

  • @doranmaxwell1755

    For all my cast bullet smokeless rounds I HT coat. I do it myself or I buy commercial cast and coated bullets. The advantages are no lead particles in the air on firing. EASY clean up similar to jacketed. NO leading ever. I am talking velocities over 1400 fps (ruger 30 carbine BH and .357 revolvers) with the Henry .357 carbine it is closer to 1700 fps. Accuracy may or may not be improved.. I wont commit to that just yet but it certainly is not worse. My Kimber 45 acp shot a basically one hole 5 shot group with 200 swc coated bullets. Mostly tho we shoot for fun and at 12oz sodas at 30 yards. 5 out of six means a good load LOL... Good loads end up getting shot at 110 yards (just where the table is) and getting close to a two liter is considered pretty good. My girlfriend actually hit a two litter at that range 2.... maybe 3 times out of six with my old PPC bull barrel smith and wesson 38... yeah... embarrassing right?

      @@doranmaxwell1755 Not sure I understand HT. Like powder coating? O.R.

    • @doranmaxwell1755
      @doranmaxwell1755 День тому

      @@oldranger3044 yes more or less. At first I tried both doing them myself. The powder coating was not the way to go. The HT coat was powder form and you mix with acetone and then bake at around 400 degrees till the coat is hardened on the bullet. The coat is extremely thin actually. I then size in a LEE press mount sizing setup (very very fast and easy and cheap) You can of course by already coated bullets from commercial casters like Missouri and some factory rounds now come that way. Ok so in Australia where this process comes from.. they are very strict on lead. For competitions the shooters were using jacketed bullets which were very expensive. So some guys developed this coating. recovered bullets are still coated. Amazing stuff lots of advantages including no more bore leading but the main one is there are no lead particles in the air when the gun is fired.
