I am happy to hear that many, many people find motivation from others. This principle is near and dear to my heart and I am so so grateful for the music and flute community I have been blessed with.
I remember taking a personality test with my high school choir as part of our class time. My results were neither extravert nor introvert--I was exactly in the middle! My choir director brushed off my result by telling me I'd probably answered some of the questions wrong, and I never really thought twice about the experience. I love that there is, in fact, a middle option! It's so good to know that it's okay (and probably more normal) to be somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, rather than on either side of it.
This is a great topic to address. I would say I'm an ambivert that leans toward the extrovert side of the spectrum. Although I love connecting with others and being social, I find it valuable to spend time alone with my own thoughts and feelings so that I can take those things into my music performances and practicing.
I love the topic, it’s so important to find satisfaction in life right now through different ways than we’re used to. Getting in touch with the ambivert within us all is a healthy way to balance our needs!
Wow! Thanks so much for this! I love the idea of the spectrum. People are so complex and unique and it is impossible (and dangerous) to broad-stroke and lable people as either one thing or another. It can often divide. I really believe that extremes of any kind can be very damaging and that it is always best to find a balance.
I never realized it's supposed to be a spectrum - makes so much sense. I always considered myself an extrovert, but like you, also need time alone to recharge.
I’m a total ambivert, no doubt about it. I’m well past “normal” retirement age, but keep working just so I can be around a wide range of people (and then retreat when I need to). The Covid plague may have triggered my flute obsession: as obsessions go, there could be worse ones. Plunging into this infinite sea of music I thought at first it would just be for my own personal growth and enjoyment, but now as you can see I find I need to reach out and share, even if just on the internet. And you’re right: I can be very extroverted depending on who I am surrounded by, and I’ve been at parties where I don’t say a word. Anyway, another great episode! Thank you.
Intro or extro, that is the question. The best analogy I ever heard from someone was that brilliant philosopher, Yogi Berra, when he said, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it"? Interesting talk. I wonder if playing style on an instrument or choice of genre indicates a musicians personality.
The most recent test that I took said that I am split almost half and half. I am a little more extroverted. I've also read Quiet and it is so so good! Definitely broadened my perspective.
This was very intersting! I'm the same in that I'm split half and half between introvert and extrovert according to Meyers Briggs. It seems like many people in the comments are similar in that regard.
I am almost always basically in the middle, slightly more lean to the introvert side! I get you with those personality tests though, I have a hard time answering those questions because they are all situational to and can change depending on that haha.
I think lots of people (myself included) thought they were introverts but then COVID-19 sent us all home and we realized maybe we are not as introverted as we all think. The funniest thing to me, though, is professional UA-camrs who are able to talk to their viewers and fans in videos or livestreams for literally hours on end but absolutely hate speaking to people in real life.
Awesome channel!
Glad you enjoy it! 😊
Great 👍

Also, I think I am mostly an introvert, but I can be extroverted if need be.

Revelation! I'm an ambivert! I love the idea of just listening to our bodies and finding where we get our energy and when.

Thanks for this video every musician needs it
This is the very first time I have heard of Ambiverts!! A wonderful concept, and so apt for musicians.
Thanks for this video. Psychological considerations are important.

So interesting to think about this in terms of MUSICIANS.... great episode!

I am also a grandchild of Nadia Boulanger through Marianne Ploger! Marianne said she was a genius on the same level as Bach- an amazing compliment.

Hey this is so great! Totally agree, it's important to be ambivert. Great topic!
