  • There are multiple ways to learn tattooing and in this talk with Janis we are mostly talking about his experience in times before UA-cam of long way of discovering things on your own. Now times are different and there is a lot more info available as well as tattooists to share experiences with.
For around one year shop Rigas Tinte where Janis is working with his team they have apprentice and they are passing they knowledge on.
We will talk about long way of doing it which is on your own. Hard way of doing which is learning all you can and wrong way which would be expecting that you are natural and all you need you can pick up from some videos and forums.

    What's your plan?
If you're considering to start learning tattooing what's your plan of action???
If you're already doing it - what's your routine?
If you know any horror stories then let the world know.
Thank you you lovely human beings and other creatures.

I’ve been learning tattooing for more than 5 years now and soon I will start my apprenticeship. Hopefully one day I can become a tattoo artist. I sketch everyday and do free tattoo for friends once or twice a year.

UA-cam and the internet helps a lot, downloaded some ebooks, about tuning coils, some of color theory, test my grey wash untill I was happy, searched a lot of bio safety stuff. UA-cam is really great platform for learning

Hearing the story of how Jānis started off tattooing (still respecting everything he does and did), makes me feel grateful, that I am in the era when tattooing is pretty common, and information is available everywhere. And that I don't have to struggle figuring things out on my own, even if it is fun at times, I like to learn and know what I am doing. I will be forever thankful to Emīls for him showing me how things are around tattooing and how shit works. But still, every time I train on tattooing I learn more and more. And the hardest thing for me is adjusting my hand to the tattoo machine, because of course, it is not the same as drawing with a pencil, hah.
Anyhow, as always, love your videos, I find them very useful, thanks. xx

Lines!! And tattooing yourself s pretty difficult for myself 🤷 ive learned my depths better on others by feeling the needle with my stretching hand...on myself most places the pain was distracting me from concentrating on feeling the other things i needed to feel or sounds i needed to pay attention to. But everyone one is difference.
    Love your shop talk!!

First of, so stoked you make this content! Please keep it going and maybe try individual mics for each of you hahah
So far I've just tried to tattoo my friends and my plan is just to keep on doing it for free - until I feel like I can actually charge someone for the work that I do. I'm still learning and I'm only doing handpoking, so there's tons of history and tradition that I wanna learn - so I'm looking into books, youtube, instagram and other local DIY tattooers. As you say there's really no shame in doing it yourself and just trying it out - the issue is that tattooing has gotten increasingly popular and some shops wanna gatekeep the industry so it doesn't get a bad reputation because of a few bad apples.
My routine is to draw flash daily, try out new stuff every day and challenge myself on composition and tonality - I love to draw anything, but I'm all about surprising myself and that's where tattooing is really super gratifying because it's always a new person, new canvas and new idea.
Some of my best tattoos on me I've still gotten in shops, because there's just so much experience that a seasoned shop tattoo artist has and it's good to just get tattoos from people you admire and watch them work! But I love the handpoking scene and how intimate and practical it is. Also it pollutes less lol. Thanks guys!!

currently learning on my own, basically ive been drawing a bit and saw that i can draw better than some of the tattoo artists in my area. Also i do alot of research before i do anything. so UA-cam has been a great source of info for me. From what type of machine to get, what cartridges, what ink. Did a tattoo on myself a couple of days ago turned out pretty decent, still first few lines were pretty shaky. Definitley have to practice more on fake skin. Even though Friends are already eager to get some tattoos.

I understand. Im 26 and a mom of 3 now. I started drawing when a was little, tracing, coloring in anything that had an empty border, sketching things that i looked at on classroom walls. When i started drawing on my self as kid my mom grounded me all the time. I have tried to get an apprentchip before. I was told he would teach me but i couldn't afford what he was asking so i have just been practicing on my own for years. I will try again though.

Learned hygiene before actual technique. Learning to do my linework evenly was a lot different from drawing on paper, making your shading smooth takes a lot of practice too. I had to figure out how to hand stencil and use technique that wouldnt smudge the stencil away early too.

I've done my first tattoo on a living human :) recently. I started by working as a shop admin and I'm still doing that. During my work I learned a lot about tattoing in theory, so I hope it is the right way )). Fake skin gave me the idea of the weight of the machine in the hand, so to say. It is a new instrument after all. I'd recommend it for all the starters.
Grate job making these videos! I enjoy them all the time! Thanks!

Tattoo Shop Talk well, it's a lot like drawing, especially if you've drawn the design by yourself. But it was difficult for me to think about the lines, the engle of the needle and keep the stretch simultaneously. Good stretch is super important, I learned )).

In the same boat here, did my first tattoo on myself last week and my first tattoo on another person this week after working in a shop for half a year also. a lot nicer to practice on another person than yourself! i think the time learning the hygiene and business side before you think about tattooing is super important

I do want one day to learn how to tattoo. This said, I am not in a hurry. I started drawing flash half a year ago and it's been challenging but also rewarding. From what I have read, listened, watch, drawing is the foundation of tattooing. I know it is freakin obvious to write that but there are so many people who rush and want to start tattooing before even being able to draw decent motives. Thanks for the videos, interesting guests and useful information!

I'm just like Jncs, I'm learning on my own and I draw a lot since I was a little shit but I got interested in tattooing about 10 years ago and I started practicing tattooing for 5 years with no help, I practice on "fake skin" and I've seeked out apprenticeship here in NYC to learn and grow but it is hard.
This business is heavily guarded so I'm left to continue on my own until I can get lucky. But I really wish I had someone teaching me or know someone who can give me some advice.
I love art especially on skin, and I want to be a part of that. Great chat video, wish you guys continued success.

In this age of technology and information you're not left out and if you know where to look and what look for I'm pretty sure you can become descent. On other hand I don't think it is that guarded and with correct approach and attitude (which often is an issue) you can find someone good to tech you.

I originally started out as a custom motorcycle airbrush artist, I designed some art for some bikers, and they suggested I get into tattooing, I foolishly thought it would be easy, The most difficult part for me was getting accustomed to the weight of the machine while trying to make a straight line. One of my horror stories was discovering rat bones in a tattoo shop bathroom, and another was when one owner would just ultrasonic clean the metal tubes without sterilizing them, He would just shake off the dirty water slip the needle in and then bring the client in. Needless to say, I learned what NOT to do in my shop. I believe the Unimax book you're talking about is by Huck Spaulding.

    • @TattooShopTalk
      @TattooShopTalk  5 років тому +1

I have heard it often that airbrush people get into tattooing and tattooists who are around bike world try their hand in airbrush. And yes that is the book. Thanks

This was very interesting. Thank you. I'll share my horror story and my plans with you: I live in France and have a master degree in fine arts. During my last year at university , 6 years ago, I bought a tattoo machine on ebay (stupid thing to do), thinking it was a great idea to practice on my own arm, I started tattooing a sort of odd creature without using any stencil or without a previous drawing on the skin. I ended up slicing it up and I even ended up with a strange permanent blue stain that looked like a bruise. The lines faded away, the machine wasn't working as I expected, So I was bought an other machine of better quality but I was out of money and couldn't afford a good one: it was made for shading, not for tracing lines and i continued the strange monster on my arm with it. It was extremely painfull, the result was terrible: enormous and very black (and everyday it reminds me of how useless I can be hihi). It was an extremely stupid thing to do but, hopefuly, I only damaged my own skin. I finaly went off to Colombia to teach fine arts and covered this tatoo with a big black sleeve in Medellin . Anyway, even if this first experience was a bad one, I still want to learn. I'm back in France, and I tried to find an apprenticeship without any success. I live in the middle of nowhere, you haven't a lot of tattoo shops in the area . But one of the advise I had was: "You already know how to draw, so invest in a good machine and practice in doing very small tattoos at first". I've been practicing with my "shader" machine but I feel very limited. I'm going to make the step and invest in a decent tattoo machine. Thanks again for this video

Awesome video! I grew up in New York in the 90s and tattooing didnt become legal until 97, but even when I was in my teens and early 20s everyone I knew who did tattoos were doing them from home, so I just assumed that was how you went about it.
Now I'm 31 and I want to get an apprenticeship. I had bought a cheap kit off Amazon and practiced on my leg for a period of time in 2016 but found out I was going to make things harder on myself, so I just have practiced my drawing, and now I'm going to look for a shop that will take me under. Any advice for approaching artists about an apprenticeship? I too am very shy

    • @TattooShopTalk
      @TattooShopTalk  5 років тому

Thanks for input. As for approaching artists first rule would be- don't be a dick, and second probably- be honest about what your plans are. It might take some time before you get to know people and that would also help you not to be in place where you might be very unhappy. Being shy is something you have to work on because tattooing is also working with people and shy is not good approach.

I want to take what i have in now to the local shops to get feedback but i dont want to bother them with reviewing my shit while they're working. My question to anyone out there with experience in the industry is there a smart or better way to go about this?
