The amount of people in the comments not realizing this is a book adaptation 😂 The book series never implies that the "uglies" are, in fact, ugly. It's that in this new society, anyone with any kind of imperfection is "ugly".
I figured it was based on a book adaptation. My first thought when she goes " My Whole Life Ive wanted to be pretty" is that why do they use beautiful actors. No one is perfect we all have flaws and imperfections but thats what makes us beautiful. This is a story about her believing she is ugly because of an imperfection and yet she doesnt look imperfect at all. Some people are born with it. Some glow from within. They dont look perfection, they have outward scars, they have blemishes that are visible to everyone. But they are beautiful from within. Thats who this character is. Thats not Joey King. If you want me to believe she really feels ugly then make her ugly. Make her look it. Or cast someone plain.

Well, Hunger Games follows a similar concept. It more a quick and easy way to say why society is now in this particular course. Keep in mind, like Hunger Games it's about exploring this concept. HG was about media, this one is about exploring beauty and body image perception.

That’s the point. It’s based on a dystopian novel where everyone gets plastic surgery to be perfect. Anyone without surgery is considered ugly. But they are not supposed to be actually ugly….they had to cast an attractive yet not cookie cutter actress for this to work.

It’s a book. It existed way before divergent. And it’s not that they’re “ugly”, they haven’t gotten the operation and that’s how their society shamed them into wanting it.

Favorite book series. I always wanted to play Tally if they made an adaptation but alas. Still watching though, they did a great job!
