    FYI for everyone who hasn't read the books, "ugly" just means they're a normal person. When they become "pretty" they get extensive plastic surgery, their face becomes perfectly symmetrical, and they look so perfect it borders on uncanny valley (among other things...). The terms are societal designations for people who have or haven't had the surgeries yet rather than a remark on attractiveness.
    So yes, these actors do fit the book definition of "ugly". As would everyone in our current society.

      This plot makes little.....actually no sense at all. So basically, it's a war based on looks. At least with books like THE GIVER the ploy to have humans void of memories/emotions to create a "perfect" society made some sense.

    • @TownieSimBuilds
      @TownieSimBuilds 21 день тому +152

      @@Mysterio1412 The book actually elaborates more on this, it's not just looks. The surgery the people receive in the world of the Uglies also alters their brains, hence affecting their emotions and desires. Post-surgery, the teens in the Uglies become very carefree, fun-loving, and artificially happy, like wearing a permanent set of rose-tinted glasses to the extreme. This was in efforts to reduce and/or nullify any semblance of behavior that could be problematic (freedom of thought, intelligence to a degree, and all the other emotions that contribute to potential conflict/problems: anger, jealousy, frustration, embarrassment, grief, sadness). The overall concept was: if everyone looked great and felt great all the time, how would problems ever arise in society? Flawed logic, yes, but that's the base of every real and fictional system.

    Tiktok guys, don't annoy me. *"Uglies" in the book series doesn't mean that you're actually ugly.* It only means that you're natural, with makeup on or without. You can only be considered pretty if you have your face and body remade completely. And if you think "remade" people look weird, that's how it's supposed to be. Kylie Jenner inspired, I'd say. Perfect time for this book to get a live action, everyone is so used to influencers and celebrities changing themselves under the knife that natural beauty is "not enough". But as soon as you "fix yourself" people say "it's used to be better, you look fake". Paradox, these books were great in capturing this thing.

    Interesting how Scott Westerfelt, the author, was talking about the damage beauty standards may cause in the beginning of 2000s and how society doesn't realise the problem. They can only say "if you're natural - there's a space to be improved", "if you got plastic surgeries - you're ruined". There's no winning no matter how beautiful you are.
    *And now almost 20 years later people are still the same. Just take a look at the comment section. "They casted pretty actors as uglies" - you never learn, Scott was right.*

    every one complaining that the "Uglies" arent ugly... THATS THE POINT
    it's a social comentary on the capitalisation of beauty standards and ultra consumerism. We are constantly told that there's always more we can do/buy to look better, diet, weight loss supplements, botox, lypo suction, plastic surgery, etc. That if you buy this product it will make you "pretty" but it's all a lie. You will never feel pretty enough because if you learn to love yourself and feel pretty you will stop buying products to make yourself "pretty" the "Uglies" in this series are people who haven't had the alteration surgery. They are labeled as Ugly by society because society wants them to not feel good enough. The point is weather you have had cosmetic surgery, or not, you will always be made to feel inadequate. Even people who are conventionally attractive still have thoughts of not being pretty enough, slim enough, curvy enough, tall enough, short enough, etc. and fall victim to the predatory nature of the beauty industry. And once you have had cosmetic surgery (even if you personally love yourself in your new skin) there will still be those who call you "fake" "unnatural" "trying too hard" or "weird looking". You will never be seen as pretty by everyone. The prettiest person alive is still an ugly.

I always figured the one reason why "Unwind" didn't get an adaption is because it would be harder to make people look like they're made up of other people's body parts, which gives a lot of them an unnatural appearance.

    this is literally a dream come true.
    i read the book series over and over including 'extras' and the series for 'imposters' as well, which takes place some years after 'extras'
    i hope the movie is good but im also worried about the looks of pretties and especially specials.
    not because of casting rly gud looking ppl but pretties also mean being symmetrical and almost unnaturally perfect.
    and specials are described as horrifying and beautiful at the same time, bringing up humanity's ancient fears.
    please be gud.... high expectations
    this book and the whole concept of the system in the society just gives so much to think about.
    for the ppl who didnt read the books.....
    PLEASE GO READ THEM
    one of the best book series in this world

    Everyone is mad about Joey King being casted as Tally but as someone who read the books, I think she’s the perfect cast. She looks just like I imagined Tally

    • @cobraviper2013
      @cobraviper2013 Місяць тому +6

      right!? I pictured her almost exactly like this, I did picture Shay a bit different but I like her still! I am soooooo excited for this!!!

    • @AshePBlack
      @AshePBlack Місяць тому

      Maybe it's because she's actually too pretty because the books overexagerate but certain features on tally stand out like her asymmetry with her face but do you know in reality normal ppl don't have perfect ratio faces but it's so slight ppl miss it and still compare who's prettier? But Hollywood makes ppl appear too pretty. If they make the cast pretty as a base rule, what do pretties look like. It's all about perspective from story teller. Like hunger games, maybe Lawrence is a good actress but.... In book catnis wasn't pretty
