Fitting Bucket seats into the Outlaw!

I had a 996.1 GT3 for many years and loved the Recaro bucket seats, which were the best seats I've experienced in any road car. I'm average height and fairly slim so fitted me like a glove but appreciate that larger guys may not find them that comfortable.
Cheer Geoff. I’m pretty sure the 966 GT3 recaro’s are designed with the bottom half being a Pole Position (FIA), and a bespoke ‘cobra’ top - does that ring true to you? Lovely and comfortable buckets!
My 997 GT3 had buckets but I believe Porsche then moved to a bottom half being the bigger Pole Position (ABE) so a bit more wiggle room!

What I'd like to know is what they are like on a long drive (around 2hrs)? Any worst or better than stock?
Can you also gain enough access for someone to fit in the back?

Most important is to get a seat that fits you. I find them very comfortable; they fit my shape really well. If you get a seat that’s too narrow it will be the opposite and you’ll hate them!
No chance of someone getting into the rear with these installed. Luggage only!

Seats look great and will be interesting to see your longer term review/update on comfort etc. Do they do a tilt version as I need the back seat access for the little ones 🙄
So far they seem more comfy than my gt3 seats in the 997 (Carrera GT seats) as they are a little wider and I’m quite portly. Plenty of folding options out there if you don’t want a fixed bucket. I’m going to look at car seat options for the front with my toddler 😊

Hey chap - videos are super useful. I am stuck installing my seats and wondered if you had any insights. At 8m19s you show how the frames align to the chassis of the car. I can also see that the threaded hole behing the chasis mounted hole does not align (same as mine). The at 11m28s you show how its all come together. The bolt that connects the runners to the chassis mount with the packers in between... this is the same hole that doesnt align to the second holes. My question is, do you know what length bolt you used and how many packers? The reason I ask is that the bolts I have been supplied with my kit are WAY too long, and I was only given 1 packer per corner, and without that threaded hole aligning, the extra thread the bolt cant drop into the hole in the chasis. Hope that makes sense.
If it’s the bars that mount to the car chassis they should be drilled for a perfect fit - if they don’t immediately align you might need to trim the carpet a little.
If you have the whole seat+frame assembled and want to put it in as a unit, make sure all the bolts are torqued to spec except the side mount bolts on the outside face of the seat - these should be very loose to allow lots of play in the runners. First bolt to the chassis, then tighten the last two side mount bolts to put it all together 👍

Thank You for Your content. How many kilograms You think you saved? Do You feel the weight saving whilst driving?
So far the car has lost 61kg, so essentially the weight of a passenger. I've lost that weight gradually over time as I've made improvements, so I haven't had a direct before and after comparison. So with that said its hard for me to pinpoint the exact difference it's made. I guess the best way to compare would be running with and without a 61kg passenger ! The car certainly feels light and nimble and revs very well so i'm very happy with it.

Im looking for a new garagecar, but I am quit tall (203cm).
I have just tried sitting with my helmet, in the daily, and I can see that I need 103cm from seat to roof…not pressing down on the seat.
Would it be possible for you to tell me your cars meassures from seat to roof?

Hi Micheal, from the rear of the seat swab where th base meet the back rest I measure 98cm - note my car has a sunroof. I understand you can get side mounts to lower the seat further, plus you can mount the seat in a fixed position and elimiate the height of the runners. thanks

So as I understand, it seems possible to find the last 5+cm in height.
My helmet is also a Bell GT5 Touring, and I have heard, after I bought it ofcaurse, that it is not a low helmet, like ex Arai GP-6, with out facts :)

What about airbag sensor?
The early 996 doesn’t have them on the driver seat, only an occupancy sensor on the seat belt buckle, and power for the seat motors.
If you push the seat all the way forwards could a small person/ child squeeze in the back 😂 asking for friend 👀
It's far from ideal - if you want to use the back seats I would recommend to stick to a folding seat

How times move on. 2 years ago this was a dream. Now I’m searching for 996 turbos and 997.2 C2s. Not sure what I am going to end up with at the moment. I’m still doing buckets though I think the kids can slide in.
I’m 6’5 does this sit lower then the default 996 seats that are motorized. I need all the clearance I can get
It does sit lower yes, but its not a night and day difference - you can get custom side mounts made up to make them run even lower, or run thinner bottom cushions (some people take cushions out completely for track days to get more clearance for helmets)

I scrape the loft in a 996.1 GT3 with normal seats, but I fit with a helmet in a 997.1 Targa (closed glassroof).
If I made my own seat mounts, to maximize how low and back a bucket seat can go, what is your guess on the height gain?

How much room would you say is on either side of the seat between the door and the center console? I'm looking at some other similarly sized seats and want to see what else might fit, using your setup as a guideline. Thanks!
When the seat is fully backwards (helpful for getting in and out) the seat base bolster is millimetres from the console; much more room towards the door side. The wing of the seat has fine clearance to the glass/pillar. I would not want to go beyond the dimensions of the Recaro SPG XL. Good luck 👍

I've searched high and low for info on bigger bucket seats in 996's and this is the best content on the subject out there, so I have to asked detailed questions haha!
I’m 5’10, weight in at about 100kg and my waist size is typically about 36 inches and more like 38 at Christmas! I’ve just tried sitting in the car for the first time with a helmet on and I’m about an inch off the headliner. My car has a sunroof.

Where did u get the seat mounts from I am looking to install recaro pps in my 991 and don't want a really heavy seat mount and the 996 looks like its the se fitment to the 991
