@jt2284. Well said. I watch some great UA-camrs, and as fabulous as Caroline’s design, declutterring, etc. advice is, I watch her for so much more. Her attitude and personality are a breath of fresh air for me. I never tire of her humour, honesty and personal sharing, it has such a positive impact on me. Life’s not perfect, and Caroline keeps it real and down to earth, while inspiring us to feel that not being perfect is totally okay. She’s definitely up there with my all time favourites, and I hope she continues to delight us until she’s old and grey.

Your vulnerability today in your vlog is allowing me to share this:
I'm a mature woman, and I'm clinically depressed. Not looking for empathy, merely stating a fact. I'm walking through oatmeal these days and glimmers of positivity and light are few and far between. Your vids, dear Ms. Winkler are one of those rare gleams of illumination.
Your upbeat, quirky personality, packaged together with intelligence, interesting themes, and hilarious references and anecdotes, presented in a beautiful, classy, articulate girl, gives me a brief respite from this cold, dull world.
I'm grateful and appreciative of that elegant, cheery facade 😇
I wish you nothing but warmth and light, (and dark wood), high spirits and peace.
You're very deserving, and you too, are powerful!
    *Much respect, young lady.*
Don't EVER let yourself think you aren't out here, making a difference!

You know what I love about this video (I'm at minute 9), is that all those guides and the concept of a north star can be so easily applied to other aspects of life. Clothing style, weekend plans, which friends to hang out with, what hobbies to spend time and money on, what creators to follow, which side hustle to focus on. That's maybe why my whole life looks like it was designed by a panicked squirrel and why none of the pieces fit together.

Style thoughts by Rita here on youtube has a fantastic system for finding your clothing style north star and your deepest motivations, I cannot recommend it enough! It boils down to two scales that cross in the middle so you get four basic quadrants: one scale is up (outer world) to down (inner world), and the other is left (self) to right (situation/others). It's a small channel but she's so empathic and understanding of different needs that I think a lot of people that haven't found her yet would really benefit from the guidance.

After going through your Pinterest board I realized that I just never want to be far from some depiction of nature. Botanicals, fruits, animals, insects, whatever, I just never want to not see one of those things. My eyes just drifted towards those things only. I'm also pro-durability because I don't want to be tiptoeing around my life over precious fragile things. It's why I use cast iron over non-stick coated pans. And coziness is of utmost importance because I'm a sensitive person and home needs to serve the function of lowering my stress levels. I like traditional furniture shapes, nothing super modern or blobby. So... Natural Traditional Durable Cozy? And Artistic, of course, because art is vital. I would just add one other thing…..don’t buy brand new furniture, especially trendy stuff from [insert brand name here]. Buy stuff off of Marketplace, thrift stores, or yard sales. Or even the throw-away stuff left over from a yard sale. My house doesn’t look like anyone else’s house. I can’t think of one brand new piece of furniture in my house. Virtually everything came from one of the places I mentioned and everyone who walks inside our home comments on how beautiful it is. And if I decide I don’t like something, I give it to a friend, donate it, or sell it on Marketplace. Even at a “financial loss,” I don’t feel bad about it because I am not going to spend the next 6 months finishing paying for it. Sending you love and hugs. Which is also such important nuance that is currently lacking. We want to really pin down our style and it has to be "us" in a permanent neverchanging way which puts a lot of pressure on our purchases and keeps us from buying stuff that gives us joy because "we won't like it every day". But houses like our wardrobes can change with seasons. I want all the sun and breeziness in summer, and all the halloween and christmas decor in the ber months and all the flowers in spring. It's good to have a seasonal box you can get out and fall in love with again! Variety is fun❤️

Start by decorating one of your children's rooms. If you haven't already done so, don't miss out on the fun and joy of decorating your own child's room. They'll delight in whatever you do, there are no rules other than safety first, and you can let your creativity and imagination run wild! The biggest challenge will be the time it takes to paint the walls and air the room out, so set up a "fun" temporary bed for your child in another room. Ask your partner or a creative friend to help you paint over a weekend to minimise time and upheaval, while someone else helps out with the kids. You could even just paint or wallpaper one feature wall. The rest of the decor eg. soft furnishings, pictures etc can be added little by little as time and budget allows. Being a Mom of small children is exhausting I know, but being in the creative headspace of planning it will inspire you even though it will require some time and energy to complete it. Have fun with it!

It’s really awesome the way you tackled the “language” barrier, because to non-professionals, outside of the known vernacular, they have a very specific image in their heads that they can’t always elucidate despite them knowing what they are talking about - taking the time to decipher what styles your brother was talking about really helped nail those ideas, and that’s a beautiful thing.

I love the practice of "Design Tinder"! And using adjectives instead of defined styles is so smart, especially for beginners or those less familiar with interior design styles. One thing I had to learn when I worked with a designer almost 20 years ago was to make sure you're picking images where you like the actual elements and not just how clean and tidy the space looks! Aesthetically in a magazine or on a screen, I love the look of a spare, minimalist space, but in my 3D home, I want slightly messy bookshelves and chairs that are more comfortable than polished. But once I looked at enough images to hone down to the styles of things, the colors, the spatial arrangements, etc that I liked, it was easier to define what my specific likes were (instead of just picking all the spaces that looked the most clean and organized). Your space shows your skill at mixing different styles effectively, and this video does an excellent job of explaining how to do that well. Awesome job!

this is my first video of yours, and i was surprised and delighted by how accessible you made it with the terms list + examples + even the pinterest board (absolutely amazing!). the methodology was so patiently put out. i definitely agree i was extremely roadblocked by the algorithim giving me similar things, but thanks to you even explaining your process with your brother (listening to the comments he would make about it about why he liked and didn't like it), i realized i had a lot more opinions about what i liked and didn't and needed without realizing it. the "you can use words not related to the stype, or you can even make it a phrase" thing rly helped click it all together
thank you for putting this out there! i get the feeling i'll be inspired for more, so definitely subscribing

I swear I felt that so hard that I immediately went into my kitchen and just got rid of everything that was unnecessary, it was a problematic area for me and afterwards I was like okay let's do this thing and proceeded to put your stuff on in the background and start working on my entire apt. Thank you for being inspiring and funny and beautiful but modest. You're awesome and I'm being really truthful when I say you've literally changed my life. Love ya! ❤

Oh, Caroline. First, I am sorry to hear that you have been crying because I don't like to see anyone be sad. On the other hand, crying is really good for you to get out those emotions that need to go away. When this video first popped up and I saw fourteen days free and twenty five off the first month, I got very excited, because I thought you were doing a design consultation business where you would do whatever and people would pay to be in that group. Then I found out it was for working out, which is also very good, but not as fun as designing. So in the future, if you have time and think you can do a design group like that, I would love it. I love your videos. I hope you can stop crying soon (when you are ready) and feel good for a while.

I love watching your videos so much because, the way you talk, I get so wrapped up hearing and feeling what you say. The way that you design and teach others tips based on not just what’s cute or in style but also relate how to make things functional for how our individual brains work makes things make sense and become more intentional. Little shit like having drop zones, having dynamic heights and layering, not putting too much onto one wall, the list goes on what I’ve learned from you. Thank you for doing what you do. Another good way to define your style is to start off with your no-nos - anything you‘d absolutely not want in your space. For me, that’s shiny surfaces, chrome, round mirrors, anything plastic, the color yellow, new furniture, dark colors, 70s. Which results against my will in some kind of a muted shabby-chic style but I try to control myself.

Things have names. Names are used to capture an idea and an essence. That in turn labels it. Labels are names for essences and concepts allowing for clarity and ease of understanding. Humans label everything so we can communicate more effectively.

One thing I've never heard anyone talk about when talking about finding design style is allowing the architecture of the home (if prominent) to influence the decor. For example, I LOVE the airy pastels of Swedish farmhouse decor, but I live in an old Spanish Colonial in South America. Imposing Swedish farmhouse just wouldn't go, so I've learned a new way of decorating and it fits, because it blends well with my house. :) Just wanted to put that out there.

My stuff never really felt like it belonged in any of my rental apartments, but when (after about 10 years) my husband and I bought our very own house, all the random things I had collected fit right in. To me they looked like they had always been there and had been designed specifically for that space. ❤ It was such a great feeling and a perfect affirmation that both the house and all our seemingly random pieces were the right choice.
