How to fix old bad decals and make them slide off the backing sheet paper

- In this video I show you how I was able to reclaim some Tamiya decals that are no longer good for use. They have been subject to moisture or humidity previously, and now even after more than half an hour in water, they refuse to slide off the backing sheet
Thank you for sharing your skills and expertise. I have a lot of older kits to build and the decals are probably marginal at best. This could be a very valuable skill. Thank you again.

Thanks for watching, and I hope when you get around to building those kits this technique is useful!
Great tutorial. I've got a lot of old airplane kits I'm finally getting back to after many years away from them.
I'll definitely have to try this.
Thanks for filming this.
found this issue with old vintage Toyota Celica Turbo Rally, decals horrid, will never buy another old kit unless it's almost free, but this helped me out i think, the decals are frayed and broke but the Tamiya Mark Fit helped them dry good, the car on the shelf, with some character, nerves of steel is correct, thanks
Glad you managed to recover them and complete the kit!
Just a quick thought, if the goal is to make the backing paper more permeable to water, maybe it would help to scruff up the back side with coarse sanding paper before putting it in the water?
Hi Hardy, That's an interesting idea! I will have to try that and see how it works. Thanks for the suggestion!
I tried your technique and it worked nicely!!! :)
Excellent! Glad you had some success!
I been putting models together for years and I'm starting my favorite aircraft the SR-71 Blackbird from Testors 1:48 scale and it was released in 1984 so the decals has to be brittle I will try this technique especially for the long thin stripes. And since the plane is "flat Matte" I got a thing of "Dullcoat".
I think I had that kit as a kid. Blackbird is still the coolest looking plane ever! I hope you are able to save those decals, just be patient and take your time with them
Thank You, very useful! :)
Many thanks, Im encountering a similar problem on my latest build.

Glad you found it useful
The one downside to the original High Grade Evangelion Units making a resurgence in US shops following the Netflix release of NGE. Like god damn these really have just been sitting in a Japanese warehouse for 20 years huh. I realized just what a treat I was in for when I tested the Bandai logo in the bottom right and found it was impossible to get off the backing paper without tearing, this is a godsend man. I really wish waterslide decal sheets had an expiration date printed on the back or something, I thought I was going insane when I posted about it to social media and everyone was like "what the hell are you talking about waterslides are awesome and easy"
Glad you got some use out of this video!
Great pointer. Thank you.
I'd normally look for a corner to open and then force it carefully with Un-du o.o it evaporates pretty quickly tho.
Awful lot of work for a dekkle.. I'll try it.
I've never tried it on deecals...hope it works
