      sable mae it’s almost identical, keep the 3. U get full resolution photos saved to google photos too which is something they took away with the 4. I had the 3 and I almost wanna say in some situations the 3 did better. Also it uses the SAME exact Sony sensor in the camera, and the same software. So basically all u get is a telephoto lens, but u lose the ability to zoom out on selfies.

    Pixel 4 has high resolution telephoto lens than iPhone 11 Pro does.
    Edit#1:
    Google will always have slight lead in computational photography using AI, etc. But apple will also use their resources to enhance the camera performance since they have good hardware (SoC, lens, etc) built in iPhones 11 (pro). Computational photography is totally different paradigm.

    Computational photography has a lot of hard problems to solve. I think eventually they will come close enough in their approximation to be visually indistinguishable from a DSLR to the common user. Currently hair is a difficult thing to achieve good bokeh on, and that also goes for objects with lots of strands or bars and spacing in between. Eventually the processing will get good enough to make little to no mistakes in these cases.
    For all the bragging that iPhone users are doing about the iPhone 11 (and rightly so given the big leap apple just made in catching up in terms of clarity, detail, quality of photos, and night mode), it is still telling that for portrait mode, the iPhone fails the straw test. Previous portrait samples from older iPhones also show this error. Glasses and straws are commonly incorrectly blurred out.
    I do disagree with the assertion that Google is using machine learning to identify objects prior to doing portrait mode though. For humans, there may be face detection, but generally achieving portrait mode should mainly rely on stereoscopic views. In the case of Pixel, both pixel distance and camera lens distance are used.
    Nice review and explanations!

    • @YusriSalleh
      @YusriSalleh 5 років тому +2

      yeah both dual pixel and lens distance are used but both are used differently. one for transverse and another one vertical so Pixel 4 has better depth mapping compared to iphone .

    • @yureino
      @yureino 5 років тому +3

      Not really. It really depends from the one who did the test. One “photographer” to another will have different opinions and different results. As someone who has both phones (pixel 3 XL & iphone 11 Pro), different situations have different result. I prefers the iPhone for most situations, except for lowlight photography.
      I wouldn’t put my trust entirely on the “tech reviewers” as even them have their own biased.
      I can assure you the iPhone performs better than what showed here, somehow he manages to take the worst of the iphone and the best of the pixels.
      Im still amazed with the iphone even been using it for a month now. But the pixel is great too.

    • @aswinottapilavil495
      @aswinottapilavil495 5 років тому +2

      iPhone is still very good though so nothing to be disappointed anyway. My biggest problem with iPhones is that orangish, yellow tint that the photos have.
      Some people tend to say that it’s natural, honestly I don’t see it. The slightly more cooler tones of pixel is more realistic in my opinion. Though pixel tend to have more contrast though.

    • @NOLATechy
      @NOLATechy 5 років тому +4

      @@yureino Completely disagree. I've seen way too many iPhone images on way too many UA-cam comparisons to agree with your comment. On 90% of the iPhone images I've seen, the colors are just too warm on the iPhone. Samsung phones have the same problem. Warm = yellow whites. Cool = more blueish tint to white, but closer to white, not yellow. Google's Pixel phones have always taken cooler images, resulting in more natural looking colors, while the iPhone and Samsung images lean more warm, causing red and yellow tints to most of their images. Yet, despite this tendency, I hear Apple fans constantly saying how much more "natural" the iPhone images are. Well, white is not naturally yellow and brown is not naturally red.

    After a week of use, I feel that the the most radical feature of the iPhone 11 camera is the compositional feature ‘ capturing outside the frame’. This allows you to refine the composition of a photo in camera and it has saved more than one picture for me. In one picture I chopped off the top of a gate; to get the whole gate in I had to either step back or change the focal length, neither solution satisfactory because doing so gave me different composiitons, not the one I was after. But editing in camera using the feature above I re-captured the top of the gate without changing the rest of the composition and thus retaining my desired vantage point. Maybe the Pixel 4 does this too but if it does none of the reviews I read mentioned it.

    • @photoshopcafe
      @photoshopcafe  5 років тому

      That is the super wide angle. The pixel doesn't have it, one of its biggest drawbacks.

      Personally, I prefer the Pixel for photos, video is better on the iPhone though. The rest really comes down to if you prefer Android or iOS. I'm still on the mac eco system, so although I carry both phones with me all the time, I am using iPhone as my main phone, mainly because that's what I have always used and I'm used it it. If Apple keeps going the way they have though, that could change.

    Sony Xperia 1 and 5 Sony knows a thing or two about photography, great manual modes.. LG V50 and G8-G8x manual mode raw, excellent stereo recording and quad dac/amp monitoring, no dongle for the headphone jack needed and mics work well there for latency free monitoring, ultra wide, double and triple lenses, when it was not cool, Huawei P30 Pro ( the one to beat) and Mate 30, Nokia detail Raw B and white, bokeh for days, and lightroom.
    Apple pixel and samsung to an extent are great at automodes where you let the computer do everything for you, they have many of the auto algorithm style effects, dslr users see in Capture one and Luminar photo editing enhancing software.
    I do understand the picks but they are so many good phone photography options, that just hearing about apple and google every year, is almost disrespectful to the rest who will lose in some areas, but win and others, and many have onboard sd card storage, more standard ram, and equal or better and more versatile lens, but for auto do everything for yu software they are pretty good.
    I wish I could send you one of each with tutorials and reviews, so that we get a better overall view of phone photography.

    Great Review ! for the protrait mode Google has some advantage compared to the iphone because of vertical depth map from dual pixel of the main camera . you`re holding the phone in portrait orientation . i think iphone has only one method to map the depth that is from telephoto which is horizontal. google has better implementation using both source , dual pixel and telephoto to cover 2 axis in depth mapping hence it can catch the straw for proper dept mapping. and , i wish u can comment more on 13mm iphone ultrawide sharpness detail

  • @Rockthespaceship
    @Rockthespaceship 5 років тому +2

    The Pixel 4 is a better camera. I have absolutely no doubts.
    However, I am under no illusions as to how Google has messed up this phone. It is almost as if competitors have a mole in Google whose sole job is to make sure that the worst decisions are implemented.
    It's just the simple things:
    A lack of headphones;
    Taking away free original storage for Pixel phones;
    Relatively poor battery life;
    Stupid memory options; and
    No ultra wide lens.

    Lens distortion (and the digital correction of it in the phone). Something I haven't seen ANY reviewer talk about. In some side by sides where the Full Frame from each camera is shown, it looks like the iPhone may be doing less digital correction of lens distortion in wide shots. But in others, it looks like google is fixing the barrel distortion, but less perspective distortion than iPhone. But it's difficult to say since very few shots in any reviews are shown with the full frame side by side.

I'm also thinking very seriously that because people don't buy these "phones" to be phones, they ought to be called something else, because that's not what they're purchased for (phones, that is). Or maybe they just vary on thickness
    Phone has 8mm & mirrorless camara has more
    In term of size mirrorless & phones are same 6.7inch
    What if phone manufacturers decide to use different components & keep that mirror & sensor inside phone

    Great review for what's covered - but perhaps too focused (pun) because other reviews of both Pixel 4 models consistently complain about poor battery life and lack of ultra-wide lens...
    Since Google sprung for Colin's free Pixel 4 XL, I hope Google watches~reads this review & posted comments - so here are mine:
    1. Google depends on throttling screen frame rate to conserve battery so "typical" phone use should achieve much better time between charges than "intensive" conditions present during reviewers' testing; beyond that - Google could improve real-world battery life for many users, by giving users individual slider control over some always-on features which consume lots of power in the background - allowing each user to prioritize some phone features over others (i.e. - game play over fast facial recognition, etc.) ...
    2. Google's Astral Photo AI-tech should be readily adaptable to stitching two panned photos shot in quick succession into a single panorama processed in-camera - thus reducing some of the stigma from the leaving out an ultra-wide lens in these gen-4 Pixel models.
    Apple's proprietary hardware gives the iPhone 11 Pro a huge computational advantage over the Pixel 4; in that context - Apple's AI execution looks lackluster compared to what Google has accomplished with stock, lower-rated tech under-the-hood. Fortunately, I'm able to wait-out Apple & Google, 'til I see how each responds to early-adopter criticisms with updates to their respective flagship phones' software...

    If we add the fact that Iphone 11 has a wide angle, costs less and has undeniably better video it is sad pixel 4 lost its identity as the best, cheapest high end camera for photos in the market. The competition caught up and pixel 4 doesnt excel in either photography let alove video vs iphone 11 on same price tag. I am between iphone 11 128gb because i love that wide angle or wait for pixel 4a for value.

    Absolutely will smartphones completely replace real cameras for average users starting from this generation. I am embarrassed by my system camera how limited the DR is and how I always have to correct the auto exposure or auto warm balance. My iPhone is just much smarter.
    However, the computational photography has clear boundaries and it effectively limits the creativity of the user. So it will never be able to replace a good hardware for a hobby or professional photography.
    However, we also said iPhone will “never” achieve good bokeh and I think we are 1-3 years away from being proven wrong...
