UPDATE: I'll be completely honest and say that I missed the Star Trail mode (in More tab of camera app on Mate 30) which takes a shorter exposure and reduces Star trails. This video is mainly focused on the Pixel 4, but the Huawei is very impressive even using Night Mode - so reserve judgment when it comes to comparing pixel and mate 30. I'm working on full low light comparison video where I'll showcase star trail. Sorry guys!
Great video, impressive. However, I don't think an astrophotography mode can be the USP of a phone that cost so much. Thanks Tom and Ashley, great insight.
I think mate 30 pro has a dedicated mode called "star trail" for asto photography. If exposure time is low, it should expose stars properly without trailing.
When night mode first came out and I saw how amazing it was, I took my phone and tried it on the night sky. Unfortunately it didn't look good, but this phone has impressed me again. As someone who is out in nature a lot, I will definitely be using this mode. Won't have to bust out my DSLR for simple shots anymore.
If you look at 2:01 photos, HUAWEI actually did a way better job with exposure of leaves and night sky color. Pixel 4 only got pale white sky and overexposured leaves.
@@mikldude9376 yeah, the companies are just trying to get a selling point, and most of their "Night mode" pictures are usually high ISO 10 second exposures.
Very nice video. Impressive results from these phones. While I'm an owner of the Pixel 4XL I'm very glad you added your friend Ashley (she's brilliant!)! The editing is spot on and makes the pictures "shine". Also the light pollution map is incredibly helpful. Didn't know that exists. Will have to bookmark it. Again thanks al lot for your video!
So I followed Ashley's instructions for editing star trail photos but used my Huawei Honor V20 instead of a Pixel, and the end results were pretty good too. Photoshop Express on mobile has the same adjustments as Lightroom and I was able to save a profile specifically for enhancing star photos. The images look so good that people still don't believe the pictures were taken on a phone and some even thought the stars were added from a separate picture!
It definitely looks better but the light trails kind of ruin it. But honestly this is a really new thing and none of them are super amazing just like portrait mode. We're gonna have to wait 2-3 to see super awesome social media ready shots
But the great thing of the pixel 4 is the app Gcam. Now this is available for a lot of smartphones including xiaomi redmi note 7. Could you try that app with the huawei, Samsung s10, OnePlus 7 pro or even redmi note 8? To compare the hardware with the same software...?
Thank you for this video! I just got a Pixel 3a XL and a few Moment lenses and I can't wait to test them out on the night skies! The Photoshop editing tips were super helpful as well as the dark sky finder tips.
I took my astrophoto with Pixel4xl - loved it.. and did a special version where cars went away under the exposure! What a pic! You can see the red breaking lights as a light running through the pic.
The Pixel 4 astro mode is amazing. In a rural location not only does it easily capture the Andromeda Galaxy, it reliably images the much fainter Triangulum Galaxy, and just *barely* detects NGC 205 (a satellite galaxy of the Andromeda Galaxy).
I think its unbelievable how Google manages to let the Pixel create a 4-minute-exposure of the nightsky without any startrails and nearly without noise. They are the kings of software. Amazing!
I wonder what would be result if she ps those pictures taken from mate 30pro Btw, the one take with mate 30pro, the leaves in it look the best and pixel 4 maybe technically the best of 3 of them, but I do prefer the style of mate 30 pro...that set of pictures, the mate 30 pro seems to have the clearest night sky , the dark really impresses me. See it for urself guys, pause it and take a moment to decide which one is the favorite of urs. 2:03 - 2:18 iPhone needs to work on this mode...
