Having been trained by Fritz, and also being a close friend of David's, he made a snap decision. He flushed the pills down the toilet and tossed the bottle away because there was no reason for the media and the business to cause further agony for the family or to David's memory.

  • @johnreese3797
    @johnreese3797 2 роки тому +7

    Flair has told different stories about why Kerry's title reign was so short. I think the real reason was because everyone was aware of Kerry's drug issues and there was never any intention to make him a long term champion. It was a favor to Fritz and in honor of David's memory why he won the title. The most important reason was Crockett certainly didn't want to lose control of the title for his territory. Crockett ran a big show at the Meadowlands on May 29 1984 five days after Flair regained the title. Flair was his guy and Crockett would control the title until selling to Turner in 1988. By losing in Japan it didn't hurt Kerry all that much. Very few could even see footage of the match back then.

    • @No1BRC
      @No1BRC 2 роки тому +3

      The story probably repeated itself when Kerry was in WWF. He had everything to be a huge IC Champion- the pop was insane when he won the belt in a rather short but amazing match against Mr. Perfect. But I feel Vince had to cut him short and fade him out because of his issues. Indeed he performed regularly highly intoxicated.

      No, it was always going to be a favor reign. That's how it worked then. Kerry as a heel would just be stupid.

    World Class Championship Wrestling/The Sportatorium (off Industrial Blvd/Cadiz St - no longer there now) was a staple/cornerstone of Dallas, TX culture. Of course, you can't talk about WCCW/The Sportatorium w/o mentioning the Von Erich family and etc ("Gentleman" Chris Adams, "Ice Man" King Parsons, Steve Austin, The Fabulous Free Birds, General Skandar Akbar and etc)...

      This should have happened. The reason it didn't is due to World Class pulling out of the NWA in late February of 1986. At the exact same time Mid-South also became the UWF out of nowhere. Much of 85 was about Bill Watts trying to get one of his guys to become the next NWA World Champion. Terry Taylor, Butch Reed, Dibiase, even Jim Duggan. At first they retained ties to the NWA, but the first Crockett Cup in New Orleans was such a disaster largely due to Economic woes in the southwest that by Mid-May Watts decided to hold the UWF title tournament. Hell, Dibiase and Gino Hernandez would have been great Horsemen. Ted should have had at least a short run as NWA World Champion. He battled for the title against Flair and Race for years. Somehow, people remember the UWF even though it was only in operation for a little over a year when absorbed back into the NWA though they kept the UWF name. Both World Class and UWF as separate entities were huge failures. They needed the NWA.

    I love this Ric Flair so much; despite the drinking, concussions, and other health scares, he is still so articulate, charismatic, and honest. He tells the stories to the best of his recollection. That said, I do not not like the loud, obnoxious "Wooooo" 70 year-old version of Ric Flair. He is still one of the greatest of all-time.

      NWA Night of Champions was really a joint Crockett and Ole (Georgia Championship Wrestling) card. Florida also had some involvement. But hey, Kerry could have at least still been on the card World Champion or not. Personally, I think that Kerry Vs. Steamboat would have been amazing. Kerry Vs. Windam would have been amazing for the NWA title or even a number contender match. Von Erich Iron Claw Vs. "Blackjack" Claw!

    I always lived in NOLA and we had Mid South Wrestling and World Class Wrestling to watch! David and Kerry and Kevin were the best World Class had to offer in my opinion! Mike and Chris were never popular and most people would say that they were way to small to be believable! It seemed when David died the promotion went down hill from there! We always wondered why Kerry and Kevin and David never did any matches for Mid South Wrestling! Hell guys like Dick Murdock and Scandar Agbar Stan Hansen all went back and forth between the two Promotions but I don't remember one time that the Von Eric's showed up and did a match for Mid South! Great days for wrestling! I remember the battles between the Von Eric's and Flair those were some good matches! Peace out!

    • @jeffreyk5734
      @jeffreyk5734 11 місяців тому

      The Von Erichs wrestled in Mid-South and Houston Wrestling too numerous times. Kerry and David even challenged for the Mid South Tag belts in 1981 or 82. Chris Adams actually defended the NWA American Championship on Mid South wrestling. I believe it was against future tag partner Terry Taylor? This would have been in late '84. Kevin had a match for the North American Championship against Ted DiBiase at a live Mid-South event. Kerry challenged Flair for the title under the Mid-South banner in both New Orleans and Oklahoma City. I'd say this was the fall of '84. They probably had a title match in Houston as well for Paul Bosch.

    I was fortunate that my local Boston channel 25 carried WCCW in the late 80's.
    I was watching about a year before David's death. I was such a fan of that Texas
    wrestling back then. the pain the Von Eric family (especially Kevin.) has endured
    since then is unimaginable and I thank God that I can't imagine it.
