How do they keep the tracks from rusting ?
I am here in Morocco in the desert and it seldom rains would this track hold up in these conditions?
Yes it would. The manufacturer might recommend a certain maintenance and cleaning oil for the track. Sounds like you could have a fantastic layout in the desert.
The Big Boy Locos may not be service any more. But this is indeed a great tribute to beast, who served us tirelessly.

I live in Cheyenne Wyoming, where a Big Boy Locomotive is being fully restored, and yes I have seen it and touched it. It is sometimes hard to believe just how big it is. As for your layout, very well done, Bravo, Bravo!

I have been in this hobby for a little over 18 months and have spent over $25,000 on it and money well spent. I now I could sell it all and get back $22k easy. Hi everyone, thanks for all your kind words regarding this video and my garden railway! I haven't been following along here and I'm shocked how many views, comments, and likes this video has received. Work on my railroad has slowed, but I've made a few improvements since this video was made. I still have a lot to do though! But I will try to take some new videos this summer, including a GoPro in the cab as has been suggested. It is a G Gauge 1:29 scale in size. Weighs in at 75lbs because it is made entirely of die-cast metal
Received my MTH Gauge 1 Big Boy 4014 back from repair.
Opened it up for the first time 4 months ago.
Had to return it for repair 4 days later.
I had to pay for the shipping for 60 lb.
Unfortunately it's no better for repairs in O Scale as far as MTH

I received my MTH Big Boy 4014 a couple of weeks ago. I could not get the TIU to find the engine. I worked with MTH's tech for over a hour and a half. N/G. Sent it back to MTH. I had to pay freight. ONE thing- they packaged the engine a hard box with screws (engine) and wire ties (tender). All in a compartmented heavy box. It was a Bi_ch to repack.
I received the engine back today.
The head light was hanging loose. I found the screw. The screw that holds the lead truck is missing. The tender coupler broken. One of the tender marker lights missing.
I set up my test track. I have power indicator lights at the end.
I put the Big Boy on the test track. The newer engines electrically connect to tender with a plug mounted on the draw-bar. The tender pin (for drew-bar) is square. The pin is on a swivel. Another BI_CH to lineup. Then you have to press up the draw-bar to seat the plug.
After many attempts it line up the draw-bar and engage the plug.
Well the engine still is not Recognized by TIU.
Again I put a GG-1 on the test track. Just like I did with the MTH Tech. The GG-1 works.
What a waste of TIME AND MONEY.

Not the first time I heard of horror repair stories about MTH service. Happens quite often in O gauge
I sent my 4-12-2 to them to get the motherboard replaced. I got brave and tapped into a circuit to power marker lights and overloaded a board circuit. They fixed it, but they set the flywheel air gap way off and the chuff was way out of sync with the drivers. Luckily that was the only thing, and easily corrected with an allen wrench on the flywheel setscrew.
A work art and beauty
There’s nothing but positive comments here and it’s understandable as that’s quite a set up. However, whenever first getting into the hobby there are quite a lot of options - pros and cons. I always appreciated forum comments that were also a wee critical that helped me decide best options for my preferences. Therefore, I must point out the sounds coming from this locomotive are far less inspiring than my Lionel Legacy O gauge locomotives that smoke, steam, and whistle beautifully. I much prefer a little smaller size with a lot more dazzling features. That said - a very cool video and layout.
There are Pros and Cons to everything. In the world of G Scale the manufacturers are light years behind O Scale in technology. I personally had G Scale for 15 years and then went back into O Scale. The G Scale community talk about this subject all of the time. You may not know this but there are 2 sound boards in that locomotive, one for each driver set. It also features 2 separate smoke units.

Beautiful locomotive but the whistle has alot to be desired,hopefully since this video was shot the owner has converted to railpro with their far better sound quality.

There are several suggestions for building a railroad layout yourself
Find a proven set of plans online
Find a mate who wants to build one too so you have someone to encourage you
(I learned these and the reasons they work from Jareks Hobby Club site )

+maxrailroad All of the G Scale Track is made from either Brass, Stainless Steel or Aluminum. Bachmann did make cheap steel track which does rust and not meant for outdoors. Which type of track you choose depends on your budget. Stainless Steel is most expensive but less maintenance, Brass conducts better than stainless for track power but needs a annual light cleaning and Aluminum is cheapest if you are going battery power or live steam. Hope this helps.

I always thought g scale had plastic rails. I am new to this don't own anything yet.
Unfortunately many think that G Scale is that plastic battery powered set with plastic tracks in a store. G Scale also has some very expensive models as well with choices of Brass, Stainless and Aluminum Track. Check out my actual channel page for more G Scale action. UP-4000, the original Big Boy.
In 1990 a Rivarossi Big Boy in HO scale cost me $539 AUD hate to think what a big boy in g scale costs now.
My H.O. scale Big Boy cost me 500 dollars and I have 3 of them.

I don't see it mentioned, but is your Big Boy running on track or battery power? Can that loco even run on battery power? Is that whistle the standard whistle that comes with the locomotive? Thanks for your time. Love the layout!
Thanks! It runs on DCC (through the track) using a QSI Titan sound decoder, with Q3 sounds. I've seen people convert them to battery power, and there's certainly plenty of room in the tender for batteries. It'll pull 10 amps though as it's working up a 2.5% grade with 35 cars on a hot day. (I know because the circuit breaker trips at 10 amps and one time I had to stop to let it cool down.)

whats the tightest radius this can take?
This is a USA Trains Big Boy and needs at least 16ft diameter curves however it is recommended to go the full 20ft diameter curves

Are the PFE. refers USA? I have two like them that I picked up at a swap meet and not sure the maker of them due to they having Kadees. I like to get more of them.
+Noel Wilson Yes the 40ft reefers are made by USA Trains. They made a special run of PFE 40ft ice reefers for the Big Boy which are sold by the 4 car pack. The reefers are all different road numbers
That's a nice set up, but why does the locomotive keep blowing the horn when it's not going over any grade crossings?
Depends on where you install reed switches for horn and bell activation. I don't think this one is fully remote.
Is the o scale bigger or is the g scale bigger?
Union Pacific 844 Fan o scale is 1:48. This is 1:29 scale.

I'll be starting a G scale layout soon so I have a few questions I hope you can answer 😊 At about 2:40 in the video. The train is going over the cement wall. Did you have to somehow glue the track down, or anchor it in? Or did you simply just set the track on top and it's fine?
Also one thing I'm concerned about is over usage and weathering, will the track connectors eventually start coming apart? Will I have to go put track pieces back together every now and again? Thanks for your time
I don't own this layout but the track seems to be just laying on top of the cement. Also if you do go forward with a garden layout I would go with Hillman's or Split Jaw Rail clamps which hold better than the original track joiners. Hope this helps
