- In Episode 2 of the Sacramento Valley Garden Railway Society layout tours series, we visit Mike and Carole Epstein's garden railroad in Fair Oaks, California. This is a railroad built for running their long passenger and freight trains while relaxing in the beautiful setting of a large rural backyard. A unique depot structure doubles as train storage, so they can be up and running in minutes! You'll see trains from USA Trains, Aristo-Craft, LGB, Accucraft, and more, with power provided by batteries with AirWire control, and Phoenix sound.
Tune in next time to visit a short line that's truly a model railroad in a garden. You'll see battery and live steam operations, and come away amazed with what can be built in a small yard. Please be sure to Subscribe so you won't miss it. Please also Like and Comment!

This is the video that inspired me to start a garden railway. I probably won’t ever have anything as nice as the one in this video, but I hope to use a few ideas from it. So far, I have collected enough track to make a loop. I’m building trestle bents that will elevate the track, and will keep making them as I save for a locomotive. It’s a long term goal for me, but it gives me something to look forward to. To me, there is something magical about trains. Thank you for making the video, and explaining some of the things that you did to make such a great railroad layout!
Awesome layout. Love the bridges and the Depot
Locomotive number 3462 in the video what manufacturer locomotive is that? Really like it would be interested try to find one.
That's a USA Trains J1e Hudson. It's technically a NYC locomotive, but about 20 years ago USA Trains made a few in other road names, including SF, SP, UP, and Rio Grande.
Hello there my name is mike is that place open to the public? I know this pandemic is closing a lot of this nice places ...but if so can you tell me how to get there thank you, my wife and like and enjoy graden trains 🚆 greetings
This was a private residence that was often open to the club and guests, however the owner has moved and disbanded the railroad.
It is always great to see what others have done as I have not yet started mine just yet. I have always loved trains and started out in HO years ago and then did and N Scale layout. I am ready for G Scale as I really have more room outside than in LOL. Thanks for the video and keep making new ones as it helps us all to learn from each other.
I'd like permission to use all includng the interview to publish on my channel Traisn in the Garden with Dave. We promote garden railroading and G-Scale clubs. I know i can download it, but may I use it all including the interview? Please.
I heard that he had mentioned Hans of Gold Coast Station and he’s 💯 # right. Hans is a great guy, I have known Hans since 1988. Hans has been such a great friend, I love Hans and Rachel so much. Thank you for mentioning Hans Mike.
Great video, Ben! What a beautiful layout and that station is genius.
George N Thanks George! And yeah I wish I’d built something like that for storage.
Suggestion to producers: Provide a mao or schematic of the topic railroad.
Great Layout und Bridges!
Greetings from Germany :)

Whats the power of the locomotives. Do they actually pull dead load?
Just found this channel and enjoying everything, good incentive for me to do more in my garden railroad cheers
Your station is a marvelous blend of scale and perspective. Great train watching. Hope to visit sometime in future.
The Southern Pacific/UP caboose at the 11:14 mark, any idea where I can get one of those. love it!
That’s part of the Gold Coast Station exclusive “Black Widow” series. You may want to call and see if they still have them available: www.goldcoaststation.net/black-widow.html
Awesome layout, more ideas popping into my head..
What locomotive is that headlight from?
I believe it is from an SP 2-10-2.
Awesome layout and love that station..beautiful trains as well. really enjoyed this video
that is a beautiful layout! you have done an amazing job! can you tell me if you are running battery trains or is the truck powered? Thanks for the video.
Tim
This railroad was exclusively powered with batteries using Airwire.
Nice video.
Brilliant layout and Sacramento Valley Garden Railway Society sound like a wonderful group of modellers!
WoooooW,...Wooooow,...WoooooW!!!,..... Without words to express everything that can be seen here in this Incredible and Wonderful Model of the Railway Garden,...Simply Great"... thank you''.
Awesome, did you make the mountains with 2x4’s and put concrete or plaster over it? Is it better to use battery operated, and how long do the batteries last? Thank you for your comments. I’m new to the hobby and I want to do it right the first time.
I’m sorry we missed this question. There’s a lot to discuss there, and it might depend on where you’re located! Joining a local garden railway club is the best way to get started. Second best would be an online community; there are several on Facebook, as well as dedicated forum websites. As for my personal take, I like steel and concrete mountains! And I run DCC through the rails. But battery is lower maintenance and probably a better choice for most. The owner of the railroad in this video can run for many hours on a charge.
Hans is in Tehachapi and Or Ventura. He is great.
thanks for the video! love it
Beautiful setup
I would love to run my live steam Hudson there.
Lazarus Magellan If you live nearby that might be possible to arrange sometime. There’s also a really nice new steam table at the Sacramento Valley Live Steamers.
@@sacramentovalleygardenrailway I'm an hour or two away
Wonderful, thank you for sharing. Big fun to watch for the young, and young of heart. 😊

Fantastic layout!
I have mine raised also but one day must do as you did with the cement. The only concern is living Canada is the ground heaving from the frost. Is a lovely looking set.
Kendra Watkins Sounds good! Depending on where you are in Canada the process and materials may need to be more rigorous, but it’s totally doable. In fact, look up Imagination Corporation and see what they’ve been able to do with concrete! They’re from British Columbia, but have done a lot of work further north as well. I went to for their fall workshop last year, and plan to bring some of their techniques to my garden railway this year.
thanks for the advise, have over 2000 feet of track and have 110 feet on straights. Have the track up on wood post that sit on the ground, that way they can lift with the ground lifting with the frost and settle back in the spring. Minor adjust are needed in the spring. Using brass track mostly. 15% st. stl.
Gorgeous
Great video. What a great layout. I got some great ideas . I really love the raised layout. I run live steam.
sinkinpat Awesome, thanks! And yes, this design would be great for live steam!
Great set up mind blowing
How many cars did you have in tow?
Looks great !!!
Nice Hudson you got there circling the layout.
WOW!!!!
Amazing layout!!!❤
Great layout how are you controling trains with battery power. Is it tru dcc decoder?
Robert Juberg Thanks! No, this layout is battery powered, using AirWire and Phoenix sound.
Sacramento Valley Garden Railway Society I am looking to repower a bunch of my locomotives with AirWire. That being said there is the possibility of using a system other than Phoenix, possibly Tsunami or LokSound. Really depends on the size and power demands of the locomotives l.
ecoRfan The DCC/sound decoders you’re referring to would be best used with the CVP CONVRTR or I think there’s another manufacturer with a similar product... it’s basically a mobile DCC system so you can use a traditional DCC decoder with battery/RC.
@@sacramentovalleygardenrailway Yes I am considering the CONVERTR for some locomotives, and the G4X or M15 for others depending on size or sound.
