To answer your question about Firstborn, it's not Garrett's personal experience per se but it is the experience a personal close friend of his went through, having to bury a child who died at I want to say about 6 years old. "My resolve, does it shake beneath a four-foot casket shadow" absolutely destroys my soul every time.
Their first 3 albums are connected: The night god slept, Everything was sound, When the end began. Everything was sound is in my opinion their best work, so you are in for a treat when you get to that album!
Is that why Trilogy is called Trilogy? *gasp* dun dun dun In all seriousness though I could see that and that's what I've thought for a while now. It is both a nod to the past, a closure/end of an era (apocalypse, peripeteia if you will), but looking ahead to a new one. Would love to see a track by track for Iridescent for sure, though I can understand them leaving it up to interpretation (or maybe it being a personal album). Also interesting as to why there are no footnotes on Iridescent too. There are def a few references in the lyrics that I've noticed though (though they aren't listed). Very lyrically complex and very well done and thought out album, that I think I have an interpretation on, but am still wrapping my head around (dont think I have all the pieces yet).
This album has a very special place in my heart 💙 I found out about Silent Planet when the single Vanity of Sleep released, and I don't know what it was, but something about that song specifically just gave me something to hold on to during the dark place I was in at the time. As corny or dumb as it might sound to some people, Silent Planet genuinely saved me, and music in general often does for me 😅
I've had the same experience, specifically with visible unseen. The first time i heard that song I broke down, because i knew someone understood and loved me in a world where i grew up being taught to hate myself for my identity. So glad someone else loves them as much as i do. Big Love
"I fear not the man who has practiced 1000 pit moves, I fear the man who has practiced 1 pit move 1000 times." - Me at Drew's pit moves during Vanity of Sleep
The way Garrett articulates himself and is able to express his train of thought is just awe-inspiring. I mean, those lyrics just go under my skin ever time!
Unbelievable album. Great reaction! 'Share the Body' is one of those songs that on first listen goes unnoticed but it's probably in top 3 off of the album for me. This album never gets old.
listening to this album and then watching Garrett's 56 minute explanation of the lyrics was what got me into Silent Planet, It was immediately easy to tell that there's a distinct level of thought and careful calculation that goes into their music
Yeahhh this album goes so hard. The lyrics, the breakdowns, the atmosphere. Its tied with Iridescent for me for my favorite SP album. My first experience with this band was seeing them live in 2018 with ABR, they were the opening band and they opened their performance with “Panic Room” and “Native Blood”. Im also part indigenous and i have a relative who suffers from schizophrenia and Garrett mentioned to the audience that these 2 songs were dedicated to his friend who suffers from Schizophrenia and to all the Native/indigenous members in the audience. It made me so emotional, it made me tear up.
i discovered them for myself during that tour as well and i hope they keep reaching more ears as they deserve it, but psychescape is the song about schizophrenia and panic room is about ptsd they both start with the letter p so easy to mix the names up i get it 😅
Love this album. Think I remember seeing it in a Reddit comment after the song dropped, but someone described the Vanity of Sleep breakdown to 'getting picked up and slammed down by a Decepticon Transformer repeatedly.' That comment and way of describing it has stuck with me ever since...What a banger of a song and album.
I find it amazing how you recognize riffs from all these bands you've been listening to. That makes your reactions very interesting. This album is so much about the state of the world - also a great summary... unfortunately I must add.
Love this album so much, love seeing you give it the appreciation it deserves 👍 Lower Empire is such an underrated song. So unique for them and gets absolutely crazy.
I highly recommend watching the interviews from Cayeminterviews with Garret Russel. He explains the meaning behind the lyrics of all the songs, some very deep stuff.
All-time favourite album 🙏 No album I enjoy listening to front to back more. Thr Way it Ends is a close second but the lyrics and emotions in every tune is unmatched.
@@tyrussleightholme7261 same goes for me man! Had a rough youth with my parents splitting up and that really hit me emotionally, this album got me through everything. Now i made this album and band a part of me after tattooing the brailles '⠱⠢ ⠮ ⠢⠙ ⠆⠛⠁⠝' on my ankle🤘🏽 (if you ever need a person to talk to or whatever, hit me up dude!)
Lower Empire and Depths III are honestly some of their most hidden gems imo. Afterdusk is probably my favourite from this album, but so many great tracks. Can't wait for their new album. You're in for a real treat when you listen to Everything Was Sound too.
Seen the Silent Planet boys live a few times. They are just an incredible group of human beings as well as musicians. The thought, time, creativity, and effort they put into their music is unparalleled by most.
Silent planet is such a good band and they're killing it live. You need to put Resolve - Between the man and the machine in the core poll , awesome metalcore album you'll love for sure and they're getting some new fire stuff
Very solid sound, I’ve always been interested in these guys and have seen a couple videos, but this album definitely has a great vibe to it. Very similar to ERRA, which you actually got me into. But Drew, I’m gonna keep championing the band The Ocean to you bro. And I appreciate you’ve thrown them into your prog polls for sure man. If you want something to “dip your toes into” just so you have a feel for them, try Hadopelagic I: Omen of the Deep, into Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe from the Pelagial album. Heavy, melodic, prog, synth goodness
Getting to meet Garrett on SP's Australian tour was easily one of the best experiences in my life, such an incredible person and all such incredible musicians
This band has a special place in my heart. I ve discovered them with The new eternity and I was completely mind blowned by the song writing, how talented these guys are musicians and of course by the best lyrics I red in my life. Garrett's lyrics and delivery make him one of the best lyrics writer and vocalist in the scene
Other thing, a track by track of Where the end began is available on the UNFD channel for those interested in lyrics insights and the meaning of each song on this album
So glad to see you do this record. When it came out, i was at the lowest point i'd hit in my life, dealing with my identity and growing up in the church and a society that hates who i am, which is what the song Visible Unseen is about. This record absolutely saved my life, will never stop loving these guys.
I’ve seen Februus by Uneven Structure on there for a while. I know it’s not as popular as most of the stuff that’s on there, but I promise you Drew, you must listen to it. It’s kinda like “One” era Tesseract but with more ambience. It’s also very close to One as far as tone is concerned. They have very similar guitar tones.
Firstborn is my favorite song of all time... Makes me cry every time I hear it... Was bawling when I saw em play it live. The song has single handedly made me decide that kids probably aren't for me. I'd be devastated if I lost one.
Def a band to pay attention to with cross references within their own works (aside from other footnotes, they will often nod to past songs/albums, Currents and Architects and others do this too). [[Was just about the answer with that riff you found so familiar from Northern Fires. Scorpion Hymn by Erra around 1:17. But it seems you got it already. Nice. Man starting to know his stuff, safe to say you're becoming a metalhead now. Come a long way in since you first started. Maybe safe to say you found your favorite sound or vibe in metalcore (specifically prog metalcore) (though I love both core and non-core metal)]] Also multi part or connected songs across albums too. Depths trilogy is the big one of course. But also check for First Mother, First Father, and Firstborn. Firstborn being from this album. *also when you get to the first album, def recommend the redux (rerecorded/remixed) version of the album. The original is great too, but the redux really brings the potential/greatness of that album out even more (it's up to you though).
I wanna give you the heads up in future SP songs to pull up lyrics from somwhere not spotify related, purely because there's a lot of context listed in the footnotes Garrett leaves in the original texts. It can be really helpful to understand the songs even deeper
So glad you liked it! Just to comment on the last 4 songs, they definitely are songs that don’t have a wow factor for first listens, but they come back when you listen to them a couple more times. Firstborn, I believe, is about Garrett’s friend who lost a child. I believe Garrett does a breakdown of each song’s lyrics. I know he did for the album before this “Everything Was Sound”. I feel like SPs style is almost chaotic on a first listen, but once you start to learn the songs they just keep getting better and better. Hope you listen to it a few more times and update us on how it hits you later!
Visible unseen is probably one of the best songs ever. I also really like the clip to that song. It really fits and the visuals are amazing! Crazy song! ❤️
@@DrewFortune97Ya your gonna love the production for Fit For An Autopsy, especially they're new record. Garrett has a masters degree in clinical psychology, which is why his writing is so introspective and intelligent. Truly a one of a kind writer
