The EVH D-Tuna is a unique patented device that enables players to drop the E to D and back, in an instant. D-Tuna has been standard equipment on Eddie Van Halen's personal guitars as well as signature series locking tremolo-equipped guitars since the early 90's. Since then thousands of D-Tuna's have been sold all over the world.
Watch Adam Reiver show you how to easily install an EVH D-Tuna on your guitar.

E to D = ED!
Makes sense.
instablaster.
Just installed mine. Works like a charm! Thanks Adam!
I was listening to the interview with you today on Trunk Nation. Still sad. And now I know I can purchase the unit.
Thanks.
Right on Adam!! Love the D-Tuna!!!
Really love to see you do a install of the black/back box. Have one installed and its definitely not 100% still, still needs a quick flick to return to perfect tuning after use of whammy.
Thanks Warren! I'm going to install D tuner and Blackbox stabilizer on my Hamer Diablo 2!
Great Vid. Very helpful, informative and easy to follow,
Thanks Heaps Mate.
"e to d on the fly -- ez as pie," and the credits had me.
Love your videos, Love my EVH gear!!!
Just shared to EVH GEAR TV!
Thanks for the note on the stabilizer because I really want to have the full ability with the tremolo
Great video and beautiful guitar!!!
Thank You Don!
I have the USA EVH Wolfgang Signature 2020 and it's not floating which I prefer
Love the D-tuna and no issues using it at all.
Thank you for this video. Really big help.
Just recently made the jump to Floyd rose. Can't believe all the tech that's involved with it. Really changes the guitar from just an instrument to an extension of myself
This is interesting could you elaborate please. I’m thinking of getting one and idk why. Lol
It’s 3yrs later , do you still own and play your Floyd Rose guitar?
I first purchased my 1st Floyd Rose system on my Schecter C6 Damien FR/Special Diamond Platinum w/bats on fret board 6yrs ago.
It’s was a beautiful journey figuring out my Floyd Rose from adjustments to tearing it down then put it back together and keeping level to the guitar body was a headache to such great happiness,
it’s easy to Intonate the guitar as well.
And then I’ll put guitar away till next day for all the parts to settle down before I figure out what happened next day with the bridge diving into body cavity .. and then I’ll figure out and fix it is thee best guitarist satisfaction ever ...
Of course UA-cam was my friend on this journey as well for assistant.
I got on few guitars and its the best thing to get for the drop d tunes on a floyd
That’s awesome and thank you for this video .. 👍
Awesome Nice and Easy to understand Video! Thanks
good info & well presented 👍🏻 thanks!
Thank You!
Thanks man!!! Awesome video! :-)
great vid. thx!
I got mine to stay in tune, but is it ok for the plate underneath the Floyd to be sitting on the guitar body on the bass side but raised slightly on the treble side? I see it has left a lil scratch in the paint on the bass side where it rest on the body. I had it raised slightly on both sides off the body but it would not stay in tune that way. I appreciate any help you can give me
great video, thanks
how do i make the blackbox stabilizer a bit tighter to stabilize my bridge for drop tuninng?
Great Tutorial!!!!!!! Thank you
Hello nice demo.
Is the D-tuna will work on my Floyd rose FRX? Its on my les paul.. thank you
So I added a D tuna to my Floyd Rose Special and it will only tune from D to E flat (a little beyond it) but not to E. Followed all instructions and I use 10-46 strings. Anyone have any ideas as to why this might be and what to do about it?
So am I correct to observe that I have to have the tiny Allen wrench every time I need to adjust me low E?
I like the little Ratt shout out. :)
I thought you said “eat a D” near the end of the video! 🤘🏼😆🤟🏼 Nice install demo BTW.
AHAHA EAT A D ON THE FLY LIKE AS IN THE ZIPPER OF SOMEONES JEANS >:D savage dude ain't he?!
Thank you very much.
Hey Adam, thanks for another great video. I wanted to ask: is it possible to intonate the low-e string using "the key" while the d-tuna is installed ?
Will the EVH D-Tuna work on a Ibanez Edge Zero 3 ?
So do the other strings not sharpen at all when you flick it to D?
Cool I am getting one.
Can you install on low E, high E and the B string to have an instant DADGAD tuning???? Please help.
I'm finding I have to turn the side fine tuner screw in so far when in the D tuna is pushed in to E tuning position, it makes it really hard to push and pull the D tuna in and out. No matter how I tune to drop D, when I push the D tuna in for E tuning, it's at least a 1/4 step down and then I have to adjust the side fine tuner quite a bit, which makes it hard to move the D tuna. Doesn't seem like there's anything else to adjust when you tune to drop D initially, as the instructions say. I've even tried to have the Floyd fine tuner pressing down on the screw just a little or not at all.
Great video Thank You...
I wonder if it will work on a sterling by musicman ax4 sube.??
i'm trying to fine tune the d-tuna piece but i've got the allen screw backed out so much it's about to fall out i think and I still need to tune down a little
Could you install the tremol no and black box together
I recently bought a Varibrant Deluxe 88 guitar, but I don't know how to lock the tremolo, because it doesn't have a body behind to hold a piece of wood or something and lock the bridge that you recommend doing to lock the Floyd on that specific guitar.
Great Vid!
Thank you!
does this work for drop c?
is there a wiring diagram for this mod?
Link for the block box?
Now what happens when your E goes out of tune? Do you need the Allen wrench every time?
I've got a Japanese Wolf with a factory Dtuna that works amazingly well. But I have another first run Dtuna on a striped relic copy guitar with an OFR that I've never had any luck getting to work. Floyd is flush with the body but it always goes sharp a good 5-6 cents when I clamp the nut down!? Any idea how to correct this? I checked the string tree and the strings appear to be as they should. Not pulling up on the back side of the nut at all. Not sure what else to do. Any chance they've gotten better over the years and I should just try a newer one?

Thanks for posting 👍 very helpful. What is the outtro song at the end of this video? I like it!
The ending music is from Liquid Charlie - You can find him here: facebook.com/liquidcharlie/
would be cool to see a set up with the blackbox stabilizer.
I will do that one soon!
sick, saw another video of someone installing one but they failed......like drilled right through the top of the guitar......
I have just installed the black box and d tuna to my charvel and it works a treat! I contacted fu tone for advice and they were spot on with the advice. Perfect!!!
i see that you removed the tension plate from low e side. do you recommend that? If so how and were to remove? And does it make it easier to engage disengage?
Thanks Stan! I did not remover that on this guitar (factory). In my opinion, it does not matter either way. I have guitars that I remove the whole thing. You can go either way.
Do you do a locking nut for Peavey Wolfgang ...it's a gotoh floyd as you'll know I guess ...I've stripped the thread on mine😢
How does the small set screw actually fine tune the F/R in the "E" position? Thanks
By adjusting the distance that the string lock screw moves under the fine tuner of the bridge.
SO I have a thin silver metal tabs under all the string lock bolts... do i need to remove this... my dtuna will not go under the fine tuner
Never mind...Figured it out.
Will the d-tuna work for any Drop tuning or just E to D? I have a 7 string with an Edge pro tremolo tuned to drop F#.
I just set mine up on a Peavey EVH to drop from C# to B. Works like a charm, so there could be wiggle-room you need to make it work for you.
Just had my guitar guy Eddie Carlino (Carlino Guitars) do a swap of EVH Floyd 1000 from a Special into my EVH Standard. He can not get it to push in and engage to drop it D, he said he tried everything. I was told this bridge is perfect working order by the seller, I know that doesn't mean a whole lot. But everyone I've spoken too said he needs to read the short manual for proper adjustments, but Eddie said no, it doesn't work. He also said to contact you Adam and you may have some input on this.....
Does anyone know if this works on schecter hellraiser hybrid c1frs floyd rose 1500 series? I used smaller lock screw and when its pushed in it hits the body. I'm also tuned to c# standard. I have no trem setter and i also come up and dive. Thank you
If the bridge sits too low in the recessed cavity, it will not have room to function. you can route a small channel for more room need be.
Quick question: I think I’m having trouble with my black box. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to set it up to where it’s 2 mm away from the block or the felt should be touching the block. Can anybody shine some light on this? thank you
There's s a installation manual on the Rockinger website for the unit, sadly only in German. Not sure if google translate can help with that.
Can you install D Tuners on guitars that have floyds in a cavity/trench? Would it get stuck?? I have an ESP M-II that has its Floyd in a cavity/trench.
If the bridge sits low in the cavity no - not without modification.
I have a brand new EVH Wolfgang special. My D Tuna does this weird thing where D will be in tune but E will be slightly sharp. I troubleshooted and the fine tuner screw on the floyd is all the way up, and the fine tuning screw on the d tuna is so loose I’m scared it’ll fall out. I’m pretty certain I’m doing something wrong.
Email me directly and I will walk you through - adam@fu-tone.com
Hi when i engage the D tuner, how come all my other strings go flat? Would appreciate some help. Thanks.
Your bridge is not stabilized or blocked properly.
@@FloydUpgrades thanks I’ll look into it.
Can you still tune with the fine tuner on the bridge or do you have to leave that up and just use the Allen wrench ?
you use the fine tuner like the video says, in the exact sequence. now we are tuned to E, perfectly, right? now we push the d-tuna up to even with the end of the screw it is riding on, and now we use the tiny allen wrench to tune to D.
Guys I have 2 questions can anyone help me?
-can the d tuna move the string from only a half-step?
-can I be used on another string the the top e? Say g string to tune like a baritone
Thank you in advance 😊
If I want to install the D tuna on my Jackson PC1 (floating Floyd Rose that has the hipshot tremsetter installed), would it work or would i need additional adjustments?
The Tremsetter would allow the Dtuna to function properly. However - it depends how far down on the cavity your bridge sits. You may not have the proper clearance for the unit outside of the cavity. If you email me side shot photos, I can advise better. adam@fu-tone.com
someone will come to your house and take the Jackson and the EVH guitars back. this is how people get into trouble.
When ever I tune at c# in the out position it goes up to E when the dtuna is pushed in. I need some help!
Email me direct and I will help you - adam@fu-tone.com
I have a question: Do I have to keep my floyd rose permanently blocked or just when I have to tune and install the D-tuna, and then I can let it float again?
I'm sorry for the question but I'm not a native english speaker.
If you don't use some sort of trem stop or stabilizer (or have the floyd decked against the body), using the D-Tuna will put your guitar out of tune.
You speak perfect English, sir.
@@squigsmusic better than good portions of people who live in English speaking areas thats for sure!
Do you have a video with installing the D-Tuna so you can pull up on it with the trem?
You can still pull up, you only have to stabilize the trem during the install. Use a block of wood, or even a stack of coins to keep it from moving, then once you're set up, take them out.
Would a Trem-Setter by Hipshot work as a stabilizer as well?
Thanks!
Yes~!
Awesome, thanks!
Just bought this, I guess this doesnt work on a fully floating trem? I have my trem blocked with the tremolno but when I go to fine tune it on the EVH device it will no longer come back out.
You are right, floatign trem doesn¨t work with it... My problem with D-Tuna is, when you tune the D and lock neck, thats basicly it, you can't tune the D string any more, otherwise tuna won't work...
just fyi. I have a d-tuna on my Frankie (EVH striped series relic) & I float my bridge so that I get a step & 1/2 pull-up on the G string...d-tuna works just fine.
Why does it come with 2 screws. I lost the small one, Can i use only the large one.??
No - The 2 screws are different so you can have the right size depending on where your E saddle is positioned. You need to be able to pull the DTuna all the way out - AND - push it into the E position without the entire head of the screw coming out of the back side of the unit.
Thank you :)
Your D-tuna seems really smooth. Mine is kind of clunky and doesn't always pull out/in smoothly. Any advice, anyone?
I will say for a while I was using the fine tuners before I realized you do not use them on (if that helps). But it looks fine and not bent or anything. Another thing since it's not smooth on occasion when I got to E or D it will go sharp and I have to jiggle it a bit.
I don't mind replacing it if there is no easy fix for it. I've had this D-tuna as it came stock with my MIJ EVH WG Special that I bought new around 2010.
Hey PD K - I am happy to get on a video call with you and walk you through a setup and figure out why you are hanging up. Shoot me an email and I will schedule with you. adam@fu-tone.com
Any advice on a dtuna that's stiff? I get it all in tune but when the dtuna is engaged the low e is always flat,.. I fine tune it and everything else goes out of whack. And the dtuna is stiff as hell
Is your trem nice and level? Might have to adjust the claws and retune.
Does it work with a floyd and a non-locking nut?
Yes!
I bought this device i block the bridge and i pull the bridge out to make clearance for the dtuna to free float and there was just a hair still hitting the back of the dtuna and i uninstalled it work for some guitars and i wont sacrifice to rout the wood to make room i pass on this
I tuned to Db without engaged, then when I engage it to fine tune it, the tiny set screw loses contact before it can tune down to Eb. Anyone else have this problem, or am I fuggin' it up?
IF you are using a 42 E string at half step it falls out of range. 46 at half step is in range. There is a mod need be at 42 - email me for direct help - adam@fu-tone.com
Do you have a video for installing the D-Tuna on a floating bridge? I can't find one anywhere on UA-cam and I wouldn't dare attempt that install on my own. Thanks.
TheLadsBand4ever I installed the D-Tuna on a floating bridge the other day and I can play on D tunning but not in E since I don’t have any tremolo blocker or stabalizer. When u engage to E is in D# but when I disengage to D it tuned perfectly
TheLadsBand4ever Now I’ll need the tremolo stabalizer so I can have floating as he says in the beginning of the video
@@LeoCrozz - Thanks for the info. I'm no luthier. I'll stick to a fixed bridge D-tuna (once I get a guitar w/fixed FR bridge).
does it only work on the E string? what if you put D tunas in all of the trem lock?
I think it could possibly work on the A, but nothing higher. The distance the string travels when being tuned is what affected when it’s engaged. The smaller strings have to travel more to drop in tuning as much as the E string. I’ve never tried it mind you. But I’ve had a Wolfgang for 20 years, and what I know of how it works I don’t think it would. Not accurately anyway.
Maybe It Will be better buying a Digitech droptune in this case
Nice going to order one tommrow! Also what Blades amop are you using? Sounds great.
Firebolt 50 - Smokin!
FU - TONE thanks thats what I thought , just picked an evh 5150 iii lbx hd. But I ve always wanted a Firebolt manybe ill get the 20 watt version. Rock on. 🤘😎🤘
Is this will work on a Floyd Rose FRX system?
Sorry - not on that bridge.
I can’t get mine to go up to E . It does good switching from D to D# though
Nevermind . It was too close to the body and had nowhere to go
Can you pull the whammy bar up with the d tuna already installed?
it won't move up unless you failed to set it up properly.
Great update video, Adam. I recently purchased a Wolfgang Special and installed the D-Tuna per your instructions. My problem is that I am unable to get the fine tune set screw to adjust appropriately. When I move from the drop D position to standard tuning, I find that standard is sharp. I have tried turning the fine tuner both ways and it doesn't adjust. It just gets tight so that the D Tuna becomes inoperable. I guess it's possible that the previous owner stripped the set screw. Any thoughts on how to fine tune both positions?
Maybe - I need a little more info. I will sort it out for you. Copy all and jump to email - adam@fu-tone.com
Could you install one of these on all of the strings for instant d standard
Unfortunately not. The "travel" room of each string is not constant with each other.
it's something that should be invented
Does it work for drop C or perhaps drop Bb?
I have mine set to drop from C# to B.
Hi thanks for your tips and I recently got one D Tuna but when I pull out I got only one step down... I wanted anyway to keep my floyd rose (original) floating so I bought as you said the black block, got it installed but it's the same problem and I don't know where it comes from still go only half step down...if you have an idea how I can fix that...
IT sounds like you have 2 issues - the black box is not set with enough tension. AND - your setup is backwards. Set up the BB when in the E position first. Then setup the DT starting in the D position as shown in the video. Email me if you need more direct help.
Thanks for your quick answer I'm gonna check it out
I want to purchase the black box stopper but can not find it on amazon? How did you find it? Cheers!
Found it, brought it, can't wait for it to arrive.
@@JamEZmusic86 Black Box Here - www.fu-tone.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=70&products_id=222
Hi, do you have a setup video for how to install a Black Box stabiliser in conjunction with the d-tuna? Or even just how to install the black box....
Thanks
In the works. The Black Box comes with very simple written instructions as well.
I have the Goldo Black Box. Instructions are in German. In addition, the tension knurled knob inside the housing looks like its part of the stop slider...
@@cyberi4n Here is my Black Box - The instructions are on this page as well - www.fu-tone.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=70&products_id=222
FU - TONE awesome thanks. Installed. Works a treat. I’m guessing though that trimming/removing the felt/rubber pad is the optimum solution for working with the d-tuna? There’s quite a lot of play in the rubber which means that when I drop to d the block compresses the felt/rubber a bit more but the stopper itself doesn’t move.
Thanks for all your help, appreciate it
@@cyberi4n - yes - agreed - lose the felt.
Whould it work on a fully floating tremolo?
Not fully free floating. When you drop D it would knock the other strings out of tune. HOWEVER - you can have a trem that does pull up if you add a stabilizer - like the "black box stabilizer". On the FU-Tone.com site.
Hi. I got the D Tuna install at D, the rest at ADGBE. But when I put it at E, the rest go to #. Please advise.
You are not properly blocked. Make sure bridge is stable and does not come off of ground zero when shifting from D to E.
FU - TONE Thanks man. It works!
Can you walk me through blocking the trem?
Asynsion Music I have the EVH, the tremolo will only go 1 way, it’s not floating, meaning the bridge will rest on the body when the spring is tight. I don’t know how it’s done for floating tremolo with both upward/downward ways. Some just use tremolo stopper, it will float 1 way, you will loose the ability to pull the bar up.
Could you use two d tuners? One on each e string would let you reach down to double drop d. 😍
Yes you could do all six but would you really want to...
Mmm double D's 😋
@@brandonmcvey9511 LOL :)
@@brandonmcvey9511 But then the low E follows 😄
will the black box act as a stop when working on the guitar??? or would I need both??
Not a complete stop. Take a look at the "Trem Blocker" at FU-Tone.com. Good tech tool for doing setups.
gonzosc11 second ago... yeah just order trem blocker with some other things also. my interest in the black box comes into play as you mentioned that it helps when running full float for pulling up, I got a Gibson LP with Floyd original installed from factory. while I will be using the trem block to keep the D-tuna from eating the body I will limit maybe 60%-70% of the pull up range. so with only having minor pull up range would the black box still be of value? and if it is, could you fit a black box and a trem block in there with three of your HD spring that I already have!
and another question. on the PMS mounting system, seeing that the Gibson LP is arch topped will using the PMS mounts place the pickups at the wrong angle to the strings as they don't run down the flat of a body? or can the angle be set with the PMS?
It will change the angle but stay within tolerance.
Is this only usable on a Floyd Rose, or can it be used on standard strat bridge?
Cannot
@@firhanrizani96 ok thanks
Is there one available for for a standard strat bridge? I was looking for a faster way to drop the A string to G.
Lighting is soooo much better!
This may be an obvious question but can d-tunas be fitted to lefties?
Yes! You just need to make the fine tuner adjustments with the unit in the OUT position.
FU - TONE thanks!!
Hey Does anyone know if the d-tuna works switching from D# - C# ?
Yes - Depending on gauge and scale - slight mod may be required.
FU - TONE the gauge of the strings are 9-42. I put the d tuna on and when I use and play the guitar it goes out of tune I even have a trem block. Any way that I could fix this?
Sounds like the trem is not properly blocked or stabilized - take this offline - adam@fu-tone.com
It's almost TO easy to install!!
I’m going for the black box
I'm curious (and doubtful) if these could be on other strings? Just brainstorming lol
No - It is designed for the low E string only. Every string has a different range of movement between full steps. That being said, I hav modified these for different tunings on different strings.
Is this will work on FRX system?
I'm in a struggle with locking down the nut and the strings go sharp then I tune the low e and all the other strings go flat,... wtf am I doing wrong?!?!?!
Are you maybe over tightening the nut?
@@eedwards9495 nah not at all,... what I need is a schematic or something of the proper height adjustment at the bridge and spring tension
Not to mention the nightmare of the dtuna!!!
