English is yuzu’s nightmare
😂😆 But he has improved so much over the years.. One day he will be able to speak perfect English :))
He has improved actually cuz i have seen video where yuzuru does not satisfied with his translator and he end up translating from japanese to eng by himself😆😆
@@frenchhufflepuffie83 Yes you are so right! Environment matters a lot to the accent. He lives in Toronto after all, spending everyday with Canadians with the clearest accent of all English speaking countries :P
“Canadian forest”
That's where to find Pooh-san after he had learnt lots of English hahaha.. He's so cute!!
@@FigureSkatingFan yup I know haha. yeah he is gorgeous I've never seen someone more perfect
1:18 when you realize you have an exam tomorrow but you haven't gone to lecture for the past two weeks
Anna is amazing for her age, its not only skill but confidence to speak in foreign language. Evgenia was also really good. Russian ladies again show how hard-working they are👌🏻
Most of the top Russian Ladies speak some English. Liza Tukt is pretty fluent as well. I have not seen Sasha Trusova speak English yet. Anna is the most impressive.
Ok but Mr Jason was so kind for making sign wishing yuzu a speedy recovery. He's a competitor and yuzu not being there was one less person to compete against but in the spirit of sportsmanship he wished for a talented skater like yuzu to be healthy again. That's remarkable
Yes he's always the sweetest guy around in figure skating. Everybody loves him :)
Competitors only while on the ice ❤ true sportsmanship indeed 🤩
Thing is, Yuzuru's grammar is quite good. At this point, he's probably used to listening to English because his comprehension level, even without a translator is very good. However, I think the problem is that he did not have many chances to practice language production (actually speaking it) especially outside of the skating context, that he kinda withdraws when asked to speak English.
Some learners are okay with language production knowing that they'll make mistakes. However, some learners prefer to speak well without mistake whenever they speak because they want their intention to come across every time. This second type of learner is usually slower when it comes to learning how to speak. They just take their time to internalize things and will learn to imitate others in their own time. The struggle is actually in the hesitation to actually speak and having the vocabulary to work with.
Same for me, I could understand English and write it but i was too scared to talk because I would have made mistakes. So going to england with and talking to other students really helped me unblock it if you can say that
And I think it’s also because passive learning process comes before active learning . You read, write and understand before you speak. This « silence » period has no average duration and depends on the learners of the language.
I completely agree. I'm one of those "slow learners". I didn't dare to speak English for a long time, but once I did, I basically was already on a C1 level and earned the Advanced certificate just 2 months later.
Me in the second type trying to learn in Japanese… so very hard! Language class is very formal and then what you actually hear in Japan is something else. 🤦🏽♀️
What I learned from this video:
Jason is so adorable and sweet!
Misha is a Multilingual genius.
-other skaters trying learn japanese whilst Yuzu and Shoma... err?
-there are a lot of Chinese decent skaters representing US.
Yuzu is just Savage!
Hahaha! Yuzu is savage yes! His English improved a lot over the years. He actually tried to speak Spanish and Korean too. (Nathan also tried Spanish). Wanted to include in this video but couldn't fit in. Will find time to make part 2 for other languages.. Actually it's quite hard for Japanese to learn English as these 2 languages are just so different (grammar and pronunciation, language structure wise). Also the culture. Japanese are more shy and reserved to express their personal opinion. It would help if they stay in other countries for an extended period. With Shoma training in Europe now, he probably could speak English soon haha
@@FigureSkatingFan yeah, I watched the vid where Yuzu is speaking Spanish (with Javi), Korean (with jun hwa) Chinese with citizen.
@@FigureSkatingFan oh korean too? can you tell me where that's from?
Jason Brown is such a darling! And Yuzu being sulky about being left out of the video game night! So cute. Overall, they all seem like such great people to be around. Adorable.
Haha yes! Jason Brown is really so sweet. Hope he really become an English teacher after he retired from skating. Surely he will be a super popular teacher :) Yuzu is.. how do we put it? If there is a scale of cuteness from 0-10, his cuteness will be 100 and broke that scale 😂😜
@@FigureSkatingFan Yuzu has his own scale of cuteness. That's how cute he is.
Yuzuru dream: *4A*
Yuzuru nightmare: *ENGLISH*
The fact that Yuzu caught that "is" he used and changed it to "was" is a good indication that he has a pretty good grammar awareness, it's just that his production is still limited most probably because he doesn't have much chance to practice haha
The savage came out when Yuzuru picked up the mic and said to the press “you can speak in Japanese” 🤣
I know that these athletes are learning new languages the more they travel and meet different people. But watching Evgenia speak japanese, or Misha speak mandarin just made my jaw drop. Plus it was so cute to see Yuzu and russian skaters try speaking english.
Winning an Olympic is easier for yuzuru than speaking in English 😂😂
Can we talk abt Anna's english? It's just soooo good!!!!
Finally!!!! Been waiting for this comment! Yes Anna's English is so impressive! Some people said because her family is rich so she went to private schools and could afford the best tutor. But what people didn't realise is that it also takes a lot of effort to speak another language well! We adore Anna for this reason. She's so hardworking! 😃
@@FigureSkatingFan Exactly!!! She's an incredible person! You become good at something not just for having the best things, you become good at something for being pasionate abt it and not giving up!
@@FigureSkatingFan I read that Anna speaks a third language, do you know if that’s true and what it is?
@@manonairs Heard she learnt French. Which is not surprising. Most Russians elitist do speak French. But couldn’t find any footage of her speaking French haha
@@FigureSkatingFan thank you for your answer! Is her family considered very wealthy or important/high society in Russia? I don’t know much about them other than pictures Anna shares.
Actually, is no surprise that Misha Ge speaks Chinese ( mandarin), for his father is Chinese. Also the Americans speaking Chinese, they all are born in Chinese families, so it should be natural for them to speak that language. As, for the Russians speaking a good English, is well known their talent in learning foreign languages . What is more interesting is the struggle of Jason Brown and Medvedeva to speak in Japanese, wich is not an easy language to learn. As for Yuzuru, I think he doesn't need a foreign language to speak, his art speaks for him.
5:25 will forever be engraved in figure skating history
Yes that was great. His hand slowly reaching for the mic all while keeping eye contact. It was so funny.
He actually can speak english and he is really good at it. But he needs time to process his thoughts and gets nervous for interviews which has limited time..
He is soooo cute.
Anna spoke very well, especially considering her young age!
“YOU CAN SPEAK JAPANESE “ hahahaha
jason is so nice for making that sign for yuzu😭 and medvedeva is so cute reciting the sailor moon lyrics
Nice!! Looking at the figure skaters trying to speak different languages is so inspiring!
Yuzu's "You can speak Japanese" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
3:09 they should’ve included him saying “NO” in a deep voice 😂 that was hilarious
Can we just say that the editing is so on point and the sound effects made me laugh so hard HAHAHAHAHA
😆😀😜💓🙏 Love your compliment!! Thank you so much!!! The skaters are too cute which inspired us for this edit :P
I'm not ashamed to say that I was smiling like a doofus! Thank you guys for the video, it really made my day!! ❤️
I just spent like 5 minutes watching the first minute over and over again because I realized that Yuzu and Shoma start counting with their hand open and I do it with my hand closed lol.
Jason is so aww
Haha! Great video~ the way of skaters celebrating... playing video games, eating Instant noodles and sleep... 😂😂😂
They were probably just too tired to regain their energy spent during the competition haha :P
Evgenia’s English is so good!
He could hardly speak English until high school.
And he said he wasn't good at speaking English. But
he made an effort. Few top Japanese athletes can
speak English. But he worked hard and got a
communication tool. So, while Japanese players are
getting together and talking in Japanese at the
figure exhibition, he is the only one who feels free to
communicate with players from many countries.
That leads to why he is loved.
Aww that Jason Brown guy is sweet awwww
Thank you very much for the video. It was really nice to see the skaters trying on different languages. Jason is a shining sweetheart.
Yeah he's such a sweetheart!! Really hope he has a long career in figure skating and one day he can become an English Teacher in Japan. We are sure many people would want to take up his class hahaha
As a languages enthusiast, I really enjoyed this video! Plz take a look at Canadian former skater Kevin Reynold. It impressed me how fluent he is in Japanese, perfect accent and pronounce. Jason Brown is at the same level as Yusuru's English, but we can see they're both improving and doing their best. I asked my husband (who is Taiwanese, while I'm Japanese) about Misha Ge's Chinese skills and he told me it is perfect, native level (which is not a surprise as Misha Ge lives in China as his father is a Chinese former skater). However, about the Chinese-Americans, it seems like only Vincent Zhou speaks in a fluent level.
Wow thanks for the suggestions. Will go and check out on kevin Reynold. Didn’t know he speaks fluent Japanese haha :) Mirai Nagasu also speaks fluent Japanese (too fluent that it lost the fun of it and doesn’t fit in the theme of this video haha). Will try to make another video of skaters who speak fluently on another language next. So would definitely check out Kevin Reynold :) And yes Misha’s chinese carries very strong Beijing accent (which is kinda standard mainland Chinese accent) as he spent around his 10-19 years old there. There’s a lot of fun interaction between him and Boyang and people watching were Super impressed as he doesn’t sound like foreigner at all, total native :) and u r so right, only Vincent speaks fluent Chinese out of the trio. But his chinese has more southern accent rather than the northern accent like Misha’s. Karen’s chinese is very taiwanese also, people can tell. She’s just lack of vocabs. Whereas Nathan, uhm.. haha reports said that his parents didn’t speak Chinese with him at all as his parents wanted to learn English themselves. So they speak English at home. So.. but Nathan is learning Spanish now. He hasn’t tried speaking it in public. We r thinking about making part 2 on other languages like Korean and Spanish etc :)) if you have any fun suggestion or skaters name who are speaking other languages, please let us know. Thanks a lot :))
@@FigureSkatingFan Hi dear, thank you for your reply😊 Here is a quick interview w/ Kevin Reynolds for japanese tv right after his program: ua-cam.com/video/L8aFzPQZWts/v-deo.html
I remeber I had seen a few videos of Vincent Zhou chatting with Boyang in Chinese a few years ago, 超可愛💕💕💕😍 Maybe if you search for it in Chinese (i think Boyang's nickname is 天天) you gonna find them👍👍👍
Oh, we should not forget Johnny Weir who is fluent in Russian😉
Отец Миши не из Китая. Да, он китаец. Он родился в СССР ( USSR) , тренировался, выступал на внутренних соревнованиях, а затем уехал работать тренером в Китай . 😊
Jason checking with the other skaters was so cute!
Jason is the sweetest figure skater ever!! Hahaha we all felt like he could be our best friend ever!
uwu yuzu is so cute
Yes he's so cute off the ice yet so fierce on the ice! Superb personality!

Yuzuru is so cute when she's trying to speak English. But I think I really like the way he pronounces the words he says because he is constantly familiar with English because he lives in Canada .
Interviewer:Yuzuru will respond in English as well.
Yuzuru:What! When did i say yes??!

I would like to mention that Japanese lady translator who is in this video and at almost all of the press conferences, she is doing an amazing job, I really appreciate her translations. I am a translator too and I always admire her how well she can translate from Japanese to English!
I love her! She helped so many fans around the world like myself to understand what the Japanese skaters think first hand ❤️❤️
@@FigureSkatingFan Yes, I am very grateful to her too because she can convey and formulate Yuzu's thoughts so well in English. And she knows all the figure skating expressions as well! :D

@@FigureSkatingFan Yes hahaha and also when he sarcastically said he was left out and alone 😂😂 This boy is super addictive 😣♥️
@@binoeearefin7730 OMG I also found that part super cute! Watching him (and his interaction with other skaters) is so addictive! At first I just like his skating (I started watching him since his Seimei program in 2015, and that program was addictive). Then I saw these videos of his cute interaction.. It's so funny and like u said - addictive! haha :)
@@chunghuey113 woww you're following him for a long time! ♥️Yea I love his seimei performance too♥️ To be honest sometimes I get a bit confused, like is it okay to be jealous of someone I fangirl!?😶 I'm truly obsessed with him and at the same time jealous of him😣♥️♥️
@@binoeearefin7730 Haha same here! Been there, done that! Especially when I was on the ice (I learnt figure skating on my own by watching UA-cam since 2013 by watching these figure skaters) and realize it's not easy. Even to fall on the ice like them it's impossible for me to do (Coz I can't even rotate my body like they do when they are doing the jumps haha). At that time I was jealous of them. But after awhile I realize it's unfair for me to wanna do like them because they had been training since super young and by the time they are at their levels, they must have spent at least 10-20,000 hours on ice (Probably more) As the saying goes, you should never judge a fish by its ability to climb the trees. So I just learn to appreciate and get inspiration from what they are doing, while discovering what I like in my life (Travel and adventure for example) and what I'm good at (Language, Numbers and finance for example :)) Hope you will find something you love to do and are actually good at doing one day too!!! Gambatte :)

They could hear, they could understand all the questions, they just couldn't find the right words to response 😅😅😅😅
"I was celebrating alone, because I wasn't invited..."
Why does that sound so saddd??
"Eating instant noodles and sleep."
Seems like these skaters are introverts, my kind of people be charging up by chilling off.
On the other hand, what would I give to be trilingual AND sporty AND talented like Misha Ge!
Haha.. Yuzu purposely made himself sound sad to make fun with Shoma (We found it cute rather than sad hahaha..) Shoma they all kinda see Yuzu as a special existence and didn't dare to ask him along when they were playing video games we guess. And to a certain extent yes, most figure skaters are introverts coz figure skating is quite a lonely sport (you perform alone and practice alone). #INFP kind of Personality.. And to be a polyglot like Misha - You need to create an environment where you can be exposed to different languages for an extended period. He was born in Moscow and stayed there till 10, then his family moved to Beijing when he was 10 to 19, then he went to the US to study from 19.. His parents are skating coaches. And he took up choreography courses at the Beijing Dance Academy and the Hollywood Dance Academy. So yeah, environment + effort are what makes you great :)
as someone that is bilingual in English and Japanese I feel for Hanyu-san 😅
I laughed so hard when he said sorry i give up hahahahhahahaa
