  • My dog is recovering from a nasty bout of colitis. What foods can I offer her to tempt her to eat again? Here are some home treatment and diet suggestions to get your dog with colitis diarrhea back to normal!
    Here's what I discuss:
Colitis is diarrhea due to a problem in the lower intestinal tract. Signs and symptoms include straining with little produced, mucus and some blood.
    - Generally due to problems within the colon rather than the rest of the body
    - “Normal” liquid diarrhea without blood or mucus can be due to issues within the gut but also the rest of the body
    - when to see the vet and when it's safe to try treating colitis at home
The best diet for colitis recovery:
    - Bland food that is easily digestible
    - Avoid high fat, high salt, rich foods
    - Fibre important for health and recovery of colonocytes - cells lining the colon
    Home cooked vs commercial diets
    - Various quality commercial diets that are specifically designed for intestinal recovery
    - Easily digestible
    - Prebiotics to encourage good bacteria + discourage harmful bacterial overgrowth
    - Complete diets so can be fed longer term without problems
    Home cooked
    - Chicken, rice, pasta, white fish, cottage cheese, scrambled egg
    - Try blending
    - Not balanced but more easily digestible
Probiotics - Can speed up recovery but don’t make a huge amount of difference in general
    - Don't know best bugs to include
    - Unregulated + quality control is poor
    Tempt to eat
    - Fresh, warm, hand feed, if private eaters then leave to it for 20 minutes
If not eating/recovering or getting worse then reassess diagnosis with your vet. Additional treatments (anti-nausea meds for example) may be needed or different tests/diagnosis

I have a mini dashie with chronic colitis ..she suffers alot of food allergies ..her diet is no grains no eggs no dairy no raw meat or veg ..
I have to cook her food ..only human grade foods ..
They do vomit a bit but its more of a froth then actual vomit .. nausea will cause some to bring up bile or froth ..her poo can be from a sloppy mucous blood mix to an actual runny bloody watery mess
.. the distinct colitis smell in her poop is a give away ..even before actually seeing the poo I will know if she is having a flare up from the smell alone ..
I give her coconut oil in a syringe and squirt it down her mouth ..plus use castor oil to rub into bum and insert a 1ml into her rectum of castor oil ..this has helped with settling the back end down fast and gives relief from the pain in her lower area ..castor oil cant be given orally ..coconut oil can be given orally . Home made broths are good for when you are letting the gut settle for 48 hours after flareup begins ..syringe into mouth helps alot to get dog over nausea and helps stop dehydration .. been going through chronic colitis with her for 2 plus years now

Hello hopefully you can see this comment. My 12 years old dog went under dental cleaning 4 days ago and she had some extractions. She was prescribed cephalexin and previcox. But 2 days ago she has have bloody diarrhea with mucus. Today I asked the veterinarian about it they just suggest ot could be due to the procedure or the medications and applied another antibiotic. But she is still with bloody diarrhea and mucus. What could I do? Also could it be colitis and how long should it last to not be a life/death situation? Thank you very much.

My dog just had a bout of acute colitis. The first thing the vet said to do was fast him for 24 hours to get the inflammation down. Then we gave him half of a otc drug famotidine 10mg regular ( not extra strength) - he is a small dog. Then we fed him pumpkin and rice with a 1/4 tsp of bentonite clay -
All of those soothe the colon. His stool started changing after the second dose -give 10-12hrs between doses. His colitis seems to be due to genetics and food allergies, also high strung terrier personality- which can cause digestive problems. I would not give a dog with colitis fibrous vegetables. My mom had colitis and her doctor told her no fiberous vegetables. I am speaking from my experience but I got most of my info from wholistic vets. There are several causes of colitis in dogs, parasites or bacteria as well as food allergies and stress. If you go to a vet they can help you determine what is causing it and then the next time you may be able to treat it yourself as I was.

Please help me! My dog started having diarrhea at the start of quarantine! She also started eating her own poop which is disgusting. She also has been vomiting and not eating anything! We thought it was parvo but it wasn't. Then we thought it was worms and it still wasn't. She is really thin and has been having diarrhea like 7 times per day for almost a year! Do you have any suggestions! Please help my poor doggie.

Hello, thank you for the video. I’m hoping you are still responding to comments. I’m in need of help.
So my Pomeranian just gave birth to 5 puppies. They are 6 days old. I’m noticing she doesn’t seem to be producing enough milk. I gently squeeze her and some milk does come out. But not a lot and only on certain nipples. At times, nothing at all comes out. Is this normal milk production? I’m scared for my little puppies. BUT fortunately they are gaining weight each day. They were born at about 5.5 oz and today being 6 day’s old are weighing 8.9 oz all the way to 9.6 oz. Making it seem like they are eating and are healthy. I’m just not sure how if truly she has minimal milk.
What can I do to help her produce more milk?
Also, I have already done my research and found many people calcium supplement for milk production. I have given her goats milk, Greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese. I also have been giving her oxy momma breeders edge since it is said to help with nursing and recovery. Of course, also giving her puppy food/kibble (been doing so since before whelping). Her milk production still hasn’t increased. Should I continue this? Or change something?
Before I used to deal with her not drinking enough water and dehydration scared me. I heard chicken broth helped her get thirsty and thus drink water so I gave her some but found that she just ended up having diarreah. I’m Almost positive it was the broth and not the calcium I’ve been giving her with the above mentioned foods, because prior to the broth her poop was normal. Eventually poop was with small drops of blood and mucus.... leading me to think it’s colitis.
So now my problem is... she’s a nursing mom that I believe needs calcium and needs a good/rich diet to continue to be able to nurse but colitis might be an issue and therefore cannot continue to give her some of the foods I have been. The blood in her stool happened this morning and she recently defecated again this evening and no longer had diarreah or blood. It was just soft stool with mucus. I think the pumpkin and Greek yogurt helped her. Can colitis be cured this fast? Is she okay to continue giving her calcium supplements for milk production? I see you also wrote that eggs and probiotics (I think Greek yogurt) are great for colitis. So to be safe should I only feed those in hopes she’ll produce milk?
Im so sorry for such a long message. Thank you in advance, and I hope this also helps many more people and dogs out there!

Oh and also mentioned in your description cottage cheese would still be good? I’m hoping cottage cheese eggs and Greek yogurt is enough for her to cure from colitis and still produce milk.

If the pups are gaining weight well and are bright and active with no other problems then I wouldn't worry about her milk supply too much. Worth weighing the pups twice a day like you already are. As for diet, a high quality puppy diet is all that's needed. It should contain all she needs. If your supplementing with calcium then keep that up and slowly wean her off when you want to stop. Dairy products can cause diarrhea in dogs as they lose the ability to digest lactose, so if you've been giving a lot of these then that could have caused her collitis and it should settle down in a few days.
If either mum or pups seem unwell then a check up is the next step

There are so many different diets and names can be different between countries. A couple of common examples would be royal canin gastrointestinal or hills wd. A supplement choice could be vetplus fibor

So my baby is nearly 2 years old and my dad has been gone for weeks due to work and when he's gone she misses him alot and last week I was out of town as well for the entire week. Well on Thursday my mom had to take her to see my dad because she wasn't eating at all and was really depressed since we were both gone and are the two she's attached to the most. I returned on Friday with my mom but our car got overheated and we were stuck in the middle of nowhere for about 40 minutes in the heat. When we got home her stool was soft but it still had some shape to it then her bowel movements started to slowly change soft poop to dollops of soft poop and now little movements of diarrhea with lots of mucus and drops of blood (not a lot but still since she's my baby anything concerning her health is worrying to me) I was wondering if it's stress induced colitis or not? Because she seems perfectly fine in every other aspect she's still really playful and still acts like a diva and whatnot so is it stress colitis or could it be something else? Mind you it's only been 2 days that she's had this diarrhea but once again the amount of blood hasn't been alot just a few drops. She also doesn't seem to be having full bowel movements just tiny movements.

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  3 роки тому

I certainly could be stress induced but could be worth a check if it goes on for much longer, even if she's otherwise well. My latest 2 videos talk about separation anxiety - you should check them out too

This is so helpful thank you; currently babysitting a girl dog with bloody discharge. Is anxiety-induced colitis a thing? The owner says she often gets sick when he's away

    • @OurPetsHealth

Absolutely can be. If she gets really stressed then that can also reduce the immune system a little

My Labrador retriever is 1yr 10 months old now. He has bright blood streaks in his stool.(in some quantity). He strains while pooping and has urgency to poop when taken out. He seems to have pain at the lower back. His weight is 35kgs. There is no weight loss. He is always handfed. We are giveing him white rice with yogurt he eats his meal if fed. He is lethargic and just sleeps all the time , his nose is dry most the time. All the vets are really not helping us to solve the problem. The report was normal when tested ...All the vets are just neglecting the issue, Plz help us solve this. It's really hard to see him like this.

Time to get a second opinion I think as it sounds like a more complicated problem than simple colitis and could need blood tests fecal tests and also X-ray or ultrasound

The entire pet food industry (consisting of only three large corporations) is unregulated; though of course they don't want you to know that. I'd be surprised if any pet food actually contained what it claims to.
