It snows a LOT in Hokkaido, and sometimes the snow makes it difficult to figure out where the edge of the road is, and a lot of times the roads won't have railings. That what the arrows are there for, they tell you where the road ends.
Hokkaido looks so beautiful. Love the greenery the sound of insects and the waterfalls too. I can imagine huddling in front of a warm fire all winter though. 😍
If you are talking about on the actual pavement, those are all over Japan. Edit: I see you are referring to something else. Didn't notice them when I lived in Kanto so maybe they are only in the north, as you say.
The red arrows pointing down are as I wrote in a previous comment, to show where the edge of the road is in winter. Hokkaido suffers from very heavy snowfall in winter and the red and white thin poles you will have seen in Fukushima and other places are simply inadequate in Hokkaido. The birds weren't storks, but cranes. Hokkaido has an indigenous population called the Ainu with their own distinct language and culture. Many of the place names in Hokkaido derive from the Ainu language and not Japanese. To learn about the Ainu, I suggest a visit to the Ainu museum in Shiraoi.
Welcome to Furano. I am Furano Tarou. I am youtuber too. If you come to Furano,I want to you went Farm Tomita. famous and beautiful flower garden for lavender. Have a nice trip.
What an amazing goal achieved. As I type this comment, tears are rolling down my face and they are happy tears. I am so proud of you. Now is the road back to England. I just told Nancy “ i can’t wait to meet the three of you. I will do everything i can to be at the party when you get home. I believe that, for you, home has been the world. And btw you also make me laugh so much. Oh and for sure, after the roads in Georgia, Trudy is capable of driving any kind of roads. Cheers, my friends. P.s please give a big kiss to Trudy from Nancy and I. And ok, don’t get jealous, a huge hug and kisses to both of you too.
Japan hosted the winter olympic games in 1972 (Sapporo) and 1998 (Nagano). And it can snow a lot. The city Aomori on Honshu Island get an average of 8 meters (!) of snowfall every year.
Abso brilliant video we never thought Japan would be so welcoming ,these stops rest points are great and people so nice take care you guys Fiona and Gordon fae bonnie Scotland
Thanks you for taking us with you. Again, it just shows that people all over the world are good and kind. And the world is a beautiful place. People bringing you food, how cool is that. ❤❤❤. That blue lake is beautiful. Japan is now on my bucket list. You two always make my Sundays happy and , since I love to learn, thank you.
great video, the Japanese people arte well known for there hospitality and kindness. the red markers that you mentioned are to show where the edge of the road is for the snow ploughs. the scenery is magnificent
You should have no fear of flying. You should only have fear of crashing. Seriously, though, statistically speaking, driving is far more dangerous per person-mile of travel. I have flown quite a number of times, and only once, when we encountered unusually severe turbulence, did I have even the slightest concern. On that one occasion, even the flight attendant telling us to remain calm seemed a bit shaken. Still, I will be boarding a plane again next month -- well, two, actually, as it is a round trip.
Oh you are welcome !! Thank you for coming on the adventure with us - there are some more beautiful places to come and the adventure / challenge to drive home is really getting more intense too !! Great to have you and thank you for commenting !! Marianne 🌷
Thank you for sharing, beautiful country side, green just simply beautiful. You bring the experience to us, the some would never see and it's greatly appreciated. 🖤💚💛one love
Wow - thanks @ee-deekee We appreciate your gift of appreciation !! Japan has been really green and there is so much more to come - we have had a blast and as we share more we know that more people will want to visit !! It has been a fabulous start to our long drive home !! Marianne and Chris xx (and Trudy!) 🌺
According to Reddit … It snows a LOT in Hokkaido, and sometimes the snow makes it difficult to figure out where the edge of the road is, and a lot of times the roads won't have railings. That what the arrows are there for, they tell you where the road ends.
Have many happy memories of my time in the merchant navy stopping at Kiire, Kagoshima during the mid 70s. Loving your videos and so envious of you both. Keep up the great work and making your dreams come true.
Hi, am enjoying your journey, spent a month in the south in 2006, staying with my daughters host family’s as well as a trip up to Tokyo etc. never been to Hokkaido so is interesting to see. When you get down to Kyushu go up Mt Unzen I think it’s called. One road up and another down. Magnificent views, different to what you’ve seen. Go up as far as you can drive then walk up the rest. I was fascinated with the different styled and coloured roofs as I travelled around. Each area was different. Loved the food, loved the people, loved the temples. Cant wait to watch your whole journey there. Want to go again next year. Enjoy!
Wow, the people of Japan are giving the Turkish competition for generosity!! Seeing how visitors are treated really speaks to the character of a place. ❤️🤗 According to Reddit, the vertical arrows show the edge of the road so one knows where the tarmac ends during Hokkaido's epic snowstorms. 😳😬😬 Such a beautiful, rugged, natural place!! ❤️❤️😎👍xx
From Reddit : Go back in the Winter and you'll understand exactly what they're for. Not only do they help the snow ploughs know where the road ends but in a blizzard they are sometimes the only thing you can see and you end up driving (very slowly) from one arrow to the next.
We are your passengers enjoying the stunning sceneries of Japan , rarely we see, Thank You!!! By your mere statement ; "were going home " , makes me sad. Hopely , you will still have more travels after that coz we love how you handle your travel vlog.
Awwh Thank you so much !! That means a lot ... we are already playing with ideas of the next adventure or challenge or both !! LOL We will be travelling until one of us gets sick, dies or we no longer love the road - So we have some more years yet !! Love Marianne xx
Thank you so much you guys this trip has been great. I enjoy traveling with you guys. I have never traveled this far but thanks to you too. It’s been a blessing stay safe stay blessed and definitely stay healthy and keep my truly healthy. He needs to get home safe and sound all three of you. Love you guys later later❤❤❤❤
What an incredible journey and have to say, you are so brave to meet those challenges. Out of all of the places you have been to, the fact that the language is such a barrier, I admire your strength of character. Hokkaido looks a wonderful place.
6:07 those lane indicators (red and white arrows) are for traffic (and snow plows) to know where the edges of the road are when it snows heavy in winter.

Hokkaido is where most of Japan’s milk and cheese is grown and made. Lots of sheep, race horses etc are in Hokkaido too! Big grizzly bears live all over and once a huge grizzly bear was making its way into Wakkanai. My son helped with that issue, he is a hunter too. Hokkaido grows grapes for wine, but most wine is made in Yamanashi, nearish to Tokyo…
Thank you for showing us a wonderful drive. I had a question about this red arrow. The red arrows have the following roles: Teaching the edge of the road in a snowy area In areas with heavy snowfall, when the snow piles up in earnest, the boundary between the roadway and the shoulder or side of the road becomes unrecognizable. There is also the danger of blizzards making it difficult to see in front of you. The red arrows show the driver the boundary between the roadway and the road shoulder or side strip. Even if the road is covered with snow and you cannot see the road, as long as you are careful not to enter the area indicated by the arrow, you can pass without worrying about deviating from the roadway. Also, even if visibility is poor due to a snowstorm, you can drive safely by following the arrows as landmarks. In this way, the arrows play the role of indicating the road shoulder in snowy areas. Please enjoy driving in Hokkaido.
What lovely places. Nice those folks gave you gifts of hospitality. What a beautiful park. Glad you saw some deer if no bears. Thanks for sharing the gorgeous scenery and great culture and history. Gee I have never seen salmon dry on a whirligig before either. Safe travels.

My pleasure!! And thank you for watching our videos 👍
Go explore your own country
I found this when I lived two doors away from an historic building/museum... I visited after I moved away 😂
There are almost no street lights on roads in Hokkaido at night, so red signals are used to distinguish between roads and sidewalks.
If you are talking about on the actual pavement, those are all over Japan.
Edit: I see you are referring to something else. Didn't notice them when I lived in Kanto so maybe they are only in the north, as you say.
Your slow pace travel with no rush is much better than most travel vloggers!
The red arrows pointing down are as I wrote in a previous comment, to show where the edge of the road is in winter. Hokkaido suffers from very heavy snowfall in winter and the red and white thin poles you will have seen in Fukushima and other places are simply inadequate in Hokkaido.

Breathtaking views! Thank you for sharing.
In winter snow the overhead arrows define the edge of the road to assist with driving and for snow ploughs to see.
Wonderful, exciting and excellent ❤❤❤ really enjoyed it to 🎉🎉🎉

What an incredible journey and have to say, you are so brave to meet those challenges. Out of all of the places you have been to, the fact that the language is such a barrier, I admire your strength of character. Hokkaido looks a wonderful place.
You two are making some of the best travel videos of Japan! I enjoy your videos immensely. Now I want to drive around Japan. Thank you so much.
Go for it!
The Arrows are for the edge of the road to indicate the edge for snow plows
Japan has some incredible ski resorts in Hokkaido and in the Nagano region of central Japan. The deepest, fluffiest snow in the world!
Good morning first vid of my day❤
6:07 those lane indicators (red and white arrows) are for traffic (and snow plows) to know where the edges of the road are when it snows heavy in winter.
101k subs so well deserved
I love your videos. A little bit of driving and scenery. A little bit of nice history. A little bit of sight seeing. A little bit of meals. Love the meals!
Japan is the second biggest consumer of curry spices after India, I have heard.
Katsu curry is a deep fried pork cutlet on curry rice!
im surprised you guys havent packed binnoculars...what a great way to live life you guys have embarked upon..we just love seeing people win at life..
The red arrows have the following roles:
Teaching the edge of the road in a snowy area
In areas with heavy snowfall, when the snow piles up in earnest, the boundary between the roadway and the shoulder or side of the road becomes unrecognizable.
Thank you for the information !
What lovely places. Nice those folks gave you gifts of hospitality. What a beautiful park. Glad you saw some deer if no bears. Thanks for sharing the gorgeous scenery and great culture and history. Gee I have never seen salmon dry on a whirligig before either. Safe travels.
The landscape is gredibble and how peaceful ❤where the all people are? Hokkaido schould be something for me😊
You guys deserve a few bottles of wine. Japan does not seem easy to navigate.
I would say both, they are very importent. Drive safe
If you want to see lupins and a lake that is a fabulous blue colour. Travel to Lake Tekapo in New Zealand, late November , early December. You also get fabulous views of the Southern Alps.
Wow - thank you ... great tip
Hey guys, I just finished a road trip in Hokkaido, so I hope the following info will help you:
- The speed limit is usually 50kph on all the national roads but no one seems to follow them.
- We got pulled over by the police once and we thought it was because of our speed but no, it was because we failed to stop fully at the triangular yield signs. Apparently in Japan those mean STOP not yield!
- So many deer! Be super careful on the hot spots (you can Google a map to see where the deer usually get hit) and don’t go too fast there. We almost hit one..! 😅
- All the IC (toll) expressways we encountered were one lane going each direction. Only some overtaking spots are allowed where there’s two lanes. So if you’re stuck behind a big truck the expressway becomes not so express.
- Never found a problem with parking as it was plentiful and either free or 500 yen at big attractions.
- if you’re looking for big flower fields, go to the Shikisai no Oka
- Lastly.. Don’t miss the Shiretoko peninsula it’s so so beautiful 😻
Oh thank you so much for this information !! (spoiler alert) our videos are a couple of weeks late as we move fast and it takes time to edit so we have already been!! But thank you - this will help others who are going xx We loved Hokkaido and plan to go back one day if we can !! 🌷🌺
Just read up on the arrows you mention overhead on the roads - they show the edge of the road when visibility is poor or snow has fallen. Enjoying your journeys in Japan. Thanks for sharing from Australia.
Hokkaido looks amazing. A bit different to the Stiper Stones, not to take anything away from Shropshire! Thanks for sharing your amazing adventures. You just keep showing us that wherever you go, the wilderness is amazing,
Thanks for watching!
The red arrows are effective signs when the road boundaries are not clear due to snow accumulation or whiteout conditions.
I've only been there many times in winter including working in Niseko (its like Bali on Ice for Aussies) for a season where over the season we get over 15meters of snow yet its Latitude is similar to Milan and Portland. Its due to a metrological condition where the cold air from SIberia gathers moisture from the Japan Sea and dumps the heavy snow on the whole of the island.
Great to see it in summer. Japan is one place you come back from a changed person.
BTW I also have the fearsome North Island Bear sticker on the tailgate of my Corolla and no-one tailgates me.
Awesome !! Thanks for sharing
The arrows on the side of the road are to mark the edge of the road when it's covered with snow.
Guessing you guys are now in the western part of Japan...Have a safe trip!
Vending machines are everywhere even on the boats 👌
You will be opening up your own stall with the gifts the amazing people of Japan keep giving you 👍👏👏
The more we watch your travels around Japan the more we grow to love the place and it’s people 🫶
Well they certainly save on seating 😄👍
The arrows above the road indicate the edge of the road during the deep snow in winter.
Furano is famous for skiing. The World Cup was held. It was also held in Hakuba and Naeba. The Winter Olympics have been held twice, in Sapporo and Nagano.
A red and white arrow showing the road shoulder during heavy snow season in Hokkaido, Japan.
It snows a LOT in Hokkaido, and sometimes the snow makes it difficult to figure out where the edge of the road is, and a lot of times the roads won't have railings. That what the arrows are there for, they tell you where the road ends.
Thanks Andy
