    The seaweed is called “konbu” and is an essential ingredient in Japanese cuisine. It's a high-class ingredient regardless of its appearance. "hanasakigani" is a rare crab that can only be caught in the Nemuro region. I have relatives who were born in that area, but I haven't eaten it yet.

    In a remote area of Japan where foreigners do not visit, it is common for a loyal police officer to stop the car if they find a very strange van that does not have a Japanese license plate.
    But don't worry. Japanese police officers are humble and kind. And it is their presence that keeps you safe on your journey.
    I look forward to watching your program once a week. Have a nice trip.

    Hi from Sapporo and the veggie patch! Great videos - a real reminder of a hot, early summer weekend. It was our pleasure to host you and get inspiration for our own long roadtrip plans. Nemuro police are stars. Very cool and friendly with the situation. TBH there are a lot of car exporters in this part of Japan - ports shipping to Russia, China and Korea - so local police check number plates carefully to make sure they are legal for Japanese roads. Anyway - thanks again for coming to stay :-) (OMG we ate a lot of fried stuff that day...not healthy...)

  • @johaquila
    @johaquila 11 місяців тому +5

    Ask Google Maps for how to drive from Seoul or Shanghai to Tokyo, and it immediately becomes clear why the police are confused. Taking a foreign car to Japan is a totally unusual thing to do. The resolution at 10:00 is fantastic. This officer actually realized that the same thing is likely to happen again and helped to make it smoother the next time. As a German plus only having the report of what happened, I can't judge if there was an element of silent reproach in this, but it was absolutely constructive and helpful.
    By the way, there is a bit of a murky issue here, not with the car but with public photography. Japanese law seems to be similar to German law in this respect. You can video in public as much as you want so long as you don't harass people, but you need the consent of recognisable people before publication. It appears that Japanese TV and UA-camrs typically blur the faces of bystanders for this reason. Otherwise they might get sued. It may be easier for foreigners to get away with this as they are harder to sue, but using this seems a bit unfair to me.

    • @zrolyn6367
      @zrolyn6367 11 місяців тому +1

      You won't get sued. At least not immediately. A person can request you to take down their image online if upload it without permission. If you won't then you get sued. Or uploading that image cause harm to that individual. The odd of that happen is very very low. Japanese like to play it safe so they blur it.

    • @johaquila
      @johaquila 11 місяців тому

      @@zrolyn6367 Makes sense. I guess I should rephrase my main point: Japanese people like to play it safe, so people don't expect to be surprised by seeing their faces on UA-cam contrary to what the law says.
      Therefore it's bad form for foreigners not to blur. By not following the social and legal norm, they are breaching people's (limited) expectation of privacy in public and may on occasion be doing damage to someone, e.g. by filming them at a recognizable time in a different location than they told someone else in order to be polite. Even more than Germany, Japan is very densely populated. Without the ability to be somewhat private in public, that would be harder to live with.

    It’s so pleasant to drive around the world and see the sights. I have somewhat done that in a way. I’m a trucker who has driven lorries in several countries over the years. Europe long haul work from uk , spent few years trucking in the USA and Canada , few years in Australia driving a road train , a few months In Bolivia trucking along the death roads , even a little bit of time in Africa delivering humanitarian supplies (god that was hard work due to the muddy roads 🫢 However I’m near retirement and I’m not able for long journeys anymore. My last long journey was last year to Ukraine from Ireland to deliver humanitarian aid. That was the last of my long adventures. I’ve settled back home to Ireland now for local deliveries until I retire. I’m sure we have many experiences to share. All I can say is enjoy the world travel while you can and take in every possible experience.

    You're going to love travelling in Japan you can pretty much park anywhere that's not private property or causing nuisance. Michi no ekis are good to park in, but you usually find them in tollway roads which are expensive but convenient. You'll soon learn that the cars are small coz the roads are small. I got stuck in a small road and had to do a 40 point u turn .kei cars have cheaper rego as well.

    Hello. I watched this video for the first time. In the scene at 2:15, I believe this is wakame. In English, we generally refer to it as seaweed, but there are various types of seaweed, such as nori and wakame. We process them in various ways and incorporate them into our meals. What you see here is wakame, and if you cook it directly, you can use it as an ingredient in miso soup or other dishes. Due to its strong umami flavor, it has been used for centuries as a broth. You might be experiencing the subtle taste of the sea that emanates from wakame without even realizing it.I pray for the safety of your upcoming journey.

      @@TREADtheglobe Awesome. I just remembered because I brought my Volvo back from Japan to the UK and had to get those adjustments before I go put it on the road. Glad to see you are enjoying Japan etc. I assume you are taking advantage of the hot springs too to relax and refresh. Enjoy 😊 Shikotsuko lake area is nice too, cycled around there around 25 years ago.

    Watching this made my day and also put a smile on my face. As a Japanese and also fluent in English from living abroad from most of my life, I loved the conversation between you guys and the Japanese policemen.
