I would just skip China, it doesn't even sound like fun having to have a tour guide with you the hole time telling you what you can and can't do. As well as all the extra expensive you're having to pay just to make a visit there. Just my personal opinion but I know you guys will figure out what best for your trip. Good luck and safe travels.
Not worth it! You will need a visa, a reason for going, background check, etc. For example, home address, occupational details, relatives, financial details and length of stay. Hong Kong is better.
I’ve spent lots of time on business in Japan, but always in big cities (Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Hiroshima, etc.). You are showing a quiet, rural and picturesque side of Japan I have rarely experienced. I wish I had ventured more into the countryside - this seems much more palatable and enjoyable than my narrow perspective. Thanks for showing all this.
8:40 make the best use of google lens translate that you can. it's a godsend these days. And I'm not sure if you already knew this, but the floorboards were intentionally designed to creak like crazy to MAKE SURE nobody could sneak around the place unnoticed. It's a feature, not a bug.
Your videos are food for the soul. Thank you for all the efforts you put into these fabulous travels. Please stay safe and well while you are continuing the journey. ❤👍🙏😊
Many videos introducing Japan often feature large urban centres. Some people in the world may not know that Japan has so many places rich in nature😊 Recently, an English herbalist called Stanley Smith Venetia, who had moved to Japan, passed away in Japan. She was one of those who were fascinated by the nature of the Japanese countryside.
Thank you for showing us the rural Japan.. I agree with you about how different the view about Japan is when you experience outside the big cities.. My travel days are over and it is so nice to have you show this to us.. safe travels.. sorry, but I vote to skip China.. too many hurdles and oppose government policies..
Thank you. We really enjoyed that.We live in the next Prefecture to Gifu - not too far from Gujo. I have lived in Japan for 23 years and although I am from the UK - Welsh, my family is Japanese....Thanks once again and best of luck on your travels
Hi Chris & Marianne, Hubby & I enjoyed the castle very much so much history. That was some uphill walk I bet you both were glad to go down lol. Looking forward to your next video. Stay safe & Kool..:))🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜💗💗💗💗💗💗🤗

The smithing museum was so fascinating! Metallurgy, blacksmithing, woodworking, all coming together! 🤯🤯 45°C, with humidity! 🥵🥵🥵 Glad you retreated to air con as you needed. Brutal! ❤️❤️😎👍xx
Thank you Mr P - yes the weather has been brutal for a little UK van LOL - but we remind ourselves that we are on an epic road trip and if we have to dip into air con ... we will 🙌🙏😉 The skills here.... incredible !! 😍🌺🌷xx
Thanks for taking us with you around the castle. Yes, those creaky floorboards make a good intruder alert, unless one entered through the roof, in which case the countermeasures would have to be quite roofless. As for the sword making factory, their techniques are cutting edge 😂
I love that their travels don’t coincide with tourist season. It was like that for them in North America, they didn’t have to deal with all the people. Best way to travel. 👍🏼

Hi Michael we can't logistically get Trudy into Australia, and then the route through those countries is very tricky too - but we will share the route as we go - Thank you for your ideas though 😉
Amazing journey! Been following your trip! By the way if your schedule allows, please consider visit late Venetia Smith house she created near Kyoto. Tribute to her effort bridging UK and Japan.
I should add that you were lucky to go there on a weekday morning when there were no tourists there. Last time I went there on a Saturday there was a traffic jam on the road up to the castle.
Japan you’re so beautiful and on my bucket list thanks to Chris and Marianne. Both of you I know you will take the most sensible route out from wherever you are on route home - please take care xxx
Thank you for sharing such an inspirational video. As I'm in the same age group as you, I truly admire your courage. Please don't underestimate the summer heat in Japan; it can be deadly. Avoid direct sun exposure and stay hydrated. A bottled drink called "Pocari Sweat" is good for rehydrating because it contains essential electrolytes. Don't worry, it doesn't contain any sweat despite its name. The temperature doesn't drop below 30 degrees on some nights, so you might consider staying in a hotel during those nights. If you're parking in the countryside with the windows wide open or simply walking around, it's better to use mosquito repellent. Please stay safe and enjoy your stay in Japan! Can't wait to your next episode! P.S. The creaky floor in the castle has a rather cute name: Nightingale floor.
The rainy season ended a month ago as you're posting. I know it's terribly humid and muggy, but I wonder how you're faring right now as it's summer and 37°C every day. Can't wait to catch up.

Maybe some Keep Britain tidy campaigns need to be started up again - Yes Japanese people all work really hard to keep outside their houses clean and are super proud as a nation. A real lesson to lots of countries 🌺🙌
Good question! It was actually our niece that came up with the name - we will have to ask her soon - she will be coming out to join us on the videos soon, so I will ask her on Camera 😉🙏
I've subscribed to NHK on YT for some years, Japan's equivalent to the BBC. Superb broadcast quality, English language channel. This castle has been covered in detail,. They have an extensive catalogue, from culture, food, architecture, railways, and lots more, and release videos every week. Has been a great source of everything Japan. Comments switched off.
Awesome video as always Chris and Marianne. The Castle was so spectacularly and the sword museum was my favorite part I love katanas there are so Cool.
Loving the Japan series, you are doing such a great job sharing the true essence of each country… China doesn’t seem to offer the opportunity to be shown in the same light. It risks coming across as an expensive ‘staged’ perspective as you’re guided and restricted to what you can show… maybe visiting as a plane holiday would offer more freedom … safe travels 😊
I love your inquisitive and adventurous "spirit of enjoying the new". I am a Japanese living in western Japan. I hope you will enjoy western Japan too! Why not run to Himeji Castle in Hyogo Prefecture, Peace Memorial Museum and Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture, Kintai Bridge and Tsunoshima Bridge in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Beppu Hot Springs in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu? This recommendation is a Japanese traveler's choice👍✨
Only works when you have data. Most of the places they are visiting are far from data towers. You can always look it up later, but doesn't help you when you there in the "woods" :P
I've enjoyed your Japanese leg as it's a country I'd like to visit myself. Your videos have been very informative. I was a little frustrated when you kept saying It's in Japanese, and I do t know what it says because we don't have WiFi. Most languages on Google Translate have a downloadable WiFi version. Did you ever find out what the arrows at the side of some Japanese roads meant? They indicate where the edge of the road is when there's heavy snow. I stay out of China and North Korea or any country where you're likely to be arrested on trumped-up charges. Just because you're British. Happy travels, folk. 😊🤞👍
Hi - maybe but we don't have Hong Kong on our list and shipping costs a lot each time. But we will keep sharing how we 'do / arrange' this - Marianne 😉🙏
Hello Ambassadors I just love the way you choose your route away from the big cities but almost always towards the nature You guys go towards the North of China and then west. Nepal, Mongolia, and the other Turkic nations. Or go down south Australia, New Zealand, come back up to Phillipines, Cambodia, Taiwan Laos then head up North West to Nepal, Mongolia, India and the other Turkic Nations. In the meantime, generally speaking the rocks towards the castle may be Basaltic in nature. The east coast of Japan at one point of time ( maybe 5-600 Millon years ago was part of the Eurasian continent. Thank you for the great video. Love from FLORIDA ❤❤🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
Thanks for the info Nick - we are excited to share the route as it unfolds ... it will never be straightforward with a vehicle / visas / CDP etc but we will be sharing it as it happens 🌺🙏
13:00 well, the reason why it is a problem to enter China if you have visited Turkey, is because of the internal affairs of China and the Uyghurs in Xinjiang. The Turks and Uyghurs has a relationship going a long way. I'm not sure but I believe I have read or heard somewhere that the Uyghurs came originally from somewhere in Turkey and the language they speak are similar to Turkish. And Turkey has interfered in China's internal affairs by debate the issue of how the Uyghurs are threatened by the Chinese Government in Xinjiang. Like I told you my advice is to stay away from China, go to Vietnam instead. Not only that but there have been some serious natural disasters in China lately, so that can make it difficult for you guys to plan your route. Stay Safe!
I think it would help a lot if you named the places that you were visiting. I know that that is Gujo Hachiman in Gifu Prefecture but five minutes into the video you still haven't said where you are.
@@TREADtheglobe Yeap. He served 20 years in the Corp (USMC) and out it he did probably half of that time in Japan or at least that's what it seemed like to me, but I was never able to go on with him on company duty because it was always for less than 3 years. Anything less than that the family is not allowed to go. Those moments of separation were really hard, specially as the children grew older. It became very challenging, But we made it!! He was able to retired from it and here were are still so we can tell a story😁 That's why I am really enjoying your trek of Japan. It brings some memories and always was wondering how really was like. Since back then there was no social media or internet. It sure looks like a whole other world. It's a different kind of beauty❤
And I think that a lot of it is still the same as traditions run deep and strong here - the architecture too - I think they have done a great job in preserving their buildings and style 🌺👍
I'm just curious as to when you think you'll make it back to the UK? And what are your plans afterwards? I wish you could have spent more time in the USA and been able to visit every state.
We are not exactly sure on the return date but we have lots of adventure plans - some of which involve the US ... But the idea is to keep adventuring and showing that middle aged people make successful overland, adventure travellers and that we will try everything without fear and with some courage !! Woo Hoo 🌷🙏
No - she has air con in the cab when we drive but not in the main body of the van ... which in a heatwave has been tough - but we will dip into hostels / hotels if it becomes too much 👍
No the British Can’t issue a Chinese Visa, anymore than the Bolivians could issue an Angolan Visa. It must be done from the Embassy, High Commission or Consulate of that particular country. And you will find, different diplomatic missions of the same country, will have different procedures and requirements between their offices even.
No - a visa for a certain country has to be given by that country ... there is no way around it but we will share the outcomes and how we make things happen as the challenge unfolds - thanks for the suggestion 🙌
Chris, I often time see others helping you two, and never thought that I might be able to assist you as well. This is in regards to your China Visa. OK I can’t say what the actual procedure will require you to do, but I can give you some sound advice, to minimize the need to return to the UK. To begin with, my advice is only relevant in two scenarios. A. Find out if China requires a personal appearance to take any Biometrics. If it doesn’t you can easily hire a visa service (plenty of them in London) to obtain the visa for you. Even if you do normally, ask that visa company, if they can arrange you providing the biometrics in Seoul? The other possibility is this. It should be fairly easy for you two to get a one year visa from S, Korea to teach English or be digital nomads. Normally, with any long term visa, you would be treated as equivalent to having permanent residency in that country. The requirement (if and when it exists) to return to your home country, is exactly that. YOUR HOME COUNTRY. Not your country of birth or country of Citizenship. So even though I hold dual British and Canadian citizenship. I would be able in most cases to get a visa in either or country. But technically, I should always get it in Ottawa. Now if you do attempt to get it as semi permanent residents, then reach out to your vast network of friends and patrons, to borrow a S. Korean address and phone number! Good luck, I hope you don’t need to use my advice, but in case you do….
We love watching your vlogs but OMG the music! The out of tune dodgy porn style stuff! It's so awful we have to mute it ! Please find something else as it really spoils the enjoyment of watching!
As a lover of Japan I wish you could travel every inch of the country.
You are a wonderful couple. I wish you happiness, health and long life. May God protect you and make you happy

No - she has air con in the cab when we drive but not in the main body of the van ... which in a heatwave has been tough - but we will dip into hostels / hotels if it becomes too much 👍
Can you apply from a British Embassy
No the British Can’t issue a Chinese Visa, anymore than the Bolivians could issue an Angolan Visa.
It must be done from the Embassy, High Commission or Consulate of that particular country.
And you will find, different diplomatic missions of the same country, will have different procedures and requirements between their offices even.
No - a visa for a certain country has to be given by that country ... there is no way around it but we will share the outcomes and how we make things happen as the challenge unfolds - thanks for the suggestion 🙌
With regard 2 entering China have tried contacting the British or Chinese embassies on route ? 4 their advice
Christy 🇮🇪/🇵🇹 👍
👍🇹🇷👋🏻
Good luck, I hope you don’t need to use my advice, but in case you do….
hiya, its Gujo and not Guji.

I can't believe that they don't have English explanations everywhere as a foreigner cant even read the writing. 😮
Google lens / Translate has been our friend !! And for the videos we have used the Timekettle earbuds 🙌😉🙏
I think you should just ditch communist china and visit actual Chinese Taiwan! Then Vietnam, Thailand, India etc you would continue.
Will you be visiting North Korea?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Try South Korea, Vietnam or Thailand
You c add not even bring a cell phone or paperback novel into North Korea. You think they will allow a Van?
No 👍
