As a Swede who grew up during the 90's and 00's, In Flames and At The Gates are very close to my heart.
Walking home in the dead of night in a cold, almost dystopian urban landscape with nothing but my thoughts, the cold air in my lungs and In Flames blasting at max volume were some of my most cherished moments.

In flames is one of the bands that has been with me for half my life.
One of the best concerts I saw from them was during the "in our room" tour 2017 in a very small venue where only a few hundred people fit.

Wacken stod jag och polaren på scenen på sidan och kollade, hade inte funnits tid att stå i publiken där och sen hunnit upp och riggat av i tid.

There's something truly magical about this Sticky Fingers performance they did in 2004. I mean let's be real, In Flames from the Jester Race to Clayman era was a magical thing. Some would include Lunar Strain in that too but for me, Jester Race was their first album that truly floored me and really opened my eyes to this genre of metal. I still like and appreciate all of their albums up to about A Sense of Purpose but after that, I wasn't really invested anymore.
In my teens and 20s, I fucking lived and breathed this band. I went to as many shows as I possibly could whenever they were in the northeast US, and they were always phenomenal. By FAR they put on the best live show of any metal band I've ever seen live. Let's put it this way: I even went to one show where they had to have last minute fill-ins for BOTH Jesper and Bjorn. I was devastated when I found out because it was a last minute deal, but they didn't cancel the show and even without the most important pieces of the band, they STILL crushed it and put on an unforgettable performance. That's how good this band was back then.
If I had to pick just one song for them to perform live, it's Colony. This song is just so much better live than it is on the album, and if you've ever been to an In Flames show back in the day when Jesper was still in the band, and they played this song, you know exactly what I mean. The intro riff is so epic and powerful sounding with how they harmonize it, and then when they break into the next riff at 2:55, it's just instant goosebumps and head banging for me. It's spontaneous, exactly like it was for you here lol. It's not a complicated riff by any means, but it's so heavy and groovy with the drums, and how Anders carries his scream over it after it starts...perfection.
If you were one of the lucky 400'ish people who got to be at this gig @ Sticky Fingers, you witnessed something truly magical, there's no other way to describe it. The rest of us will happily settle for the DVD though lol.

Oh, In Flames. Such I huge part of my early 20s. I got this DVD for my 24th birthday from my then-girlfriend-now-wife right after it came out (and I still know where it is 😁). What they've become doesn't resonate with me any more, but that doesn't take anything away from the awesomeness of their early output.

    • @mokuscsik
      @mokuscsik Рік тому

Thanks for the throwback! One of my favorite bands growing up. FYI,Anders was not a founding member. Before him Mikael Stanne was singer for In Flames. He switched to Dark Tranquillity, a band that you‘ve ignored so far, but absolutely shouldn’t! „Misery‘s Crown“, but more importantly „Terminus“!

    • @ChildofFlames666
      @ChildofFlames666 3 роки тому

hehe right he should urgently do something of Dark Tranquillity. fun fact Anders frieden was next to Mikael Stanne founding member of Dark Tranquillity. Since In Flames didn't have a singer for their first album Lunar Strain they asked Mikael and so he was the "first" singer of In Flames before Anders changed to In Flames.
In Dark Tranquillity Mikael had played guitar first and Andres was the vocalist on the album Skydancer. and then Anders joined In Flames and Mikael took over the vocals in DT.
I think it was the best thing that could happen that In Flames and Dark Tranquillity swapped the singers. XD

Or danish band Volbeat, Johnny Cash's love child with Elvis. "Let it burn ft Neil Fallon is a good place to start. or maybe Still counting that have the coolest opening lines in the history of music. Or For Evigt, live in Telia Parken 2017.

In Flames was one of the first bands that got me into underground metal and death metal type stuff back in I believe 1999. It was In Flames first, then Hypocrisy, then Amorphis back in the day as the first 3 and shortly after that Dark Tranquillity and Night In Gales, then around 2000, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, and finally in 2001 Opeth, who would become my favorite.
Another band that I got into around 2000- 2001 was Cave In, who are way underrated and I never see anyone review them. I thought they were the best metal core band in the early 2000s, changed to an alternative rock style, and switched to a style mixing the two.
I loved the Old melodic death metal bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Night In Gales, Soilwork the most though. Classic stuff.

One of my best concert memories is an In Flames concert at a festival back in 2008.
A perfect summer night set the mood. Made the lighting and color scheme of the show perfect. The band being awesome as usual.
The outro with smoke, confetti and fireworks was epic! Confetti lingering around in the hot summer night for what felt like forever.

I used to be a huge In flames fan, but then Sounds of a Playground Fading, Siren Charms and Battles happened. Just compare this song to something like Rusted Nail or Monsters in the Ballroom, which aren't bad songs by any means, they just don't sound like they're from the same band.
Last time I've seen them live on a festival in 2019, they were the last or 2nd to last act of that day. They were playing lots of songs from Battles and I'm not shitting you, towards the end of the concert some people were actually boo-ing them or leaving early. Dunno if they noticed or those were on the short setlist all along, but then they played The Mirror's Truth and Cloud connected and everyone including me was going nuts 🤘
Their latest album has some of that old sound again which I really like.

This was interesting as hell as this is actually the first song of In Flames that I have really listened to. I cannot say when I heard the band for the first time, but I must have done it at one time or another - surely?
There are probably several reasons for all this, but the main one is IMHO that we have enough metal of all genres here anyway. So Swedish (and Norwegian) metal doesn’t get that much exposure in Finland - at least so that it would be widely known. Here Sweden is more known for its dance, pop, and some “rock” like Kent.
Nevertheless, a good performance with an excellent ambiance! However, can’t say that I fell in love with the band - at least yet. Sorry!

Oh boy, back in the day when In Flames were good. No, scratch that: they were amazing in their time up to and including Come Clarity. I have watched every tour, basically every year, and the amazingness of their fresh and intense metal was just without equal.
And ever since the day that Jesper left (had to leave?) the band they have been on a downward spiral. No wonder that Daniel and Peter left at some point as well. The last amazing show was the farewell tour to Daniel, and I have seen them on a few festivals after, but it's just a shadow of their former selves.
    *sigh*
The band of my youth. I'm sad now, listening to old tunes.

If I may ask, what are your favorite In Flames songs? To me My Sweet Shadow and December Flower are best metal songs I have ever heard.
I know it is impossible to respond to every comment so no worries. I am just genuinely interested so if you ever see this I would be very happy if you responded.

im 48 now, but by the mid 90s when everyone was turning to grunge and other horrible mainstream metal in the US, I began looking to Sweden, Finland and Norway to get my metal!!! Changed my life!!!!! After growing up on 80s/ early 90s punk rock and hardcore music, the 90s were ALL ABOUT SCANDINAVIAN AND NORDIC countries for aggressive and unique sounds... Dark Tranquility, Soilwork, In Flames, Amorphis, Children of Bodom, Sentenced, Arch Enemy, At the Gates, Ensiferum, Dimmu Borgir, Edge of Sanity, Nightwish, Old Man's Child, Satyricon.... to name just a few of the HUNDREDS who left a lasting impression and these are what I would have called the 'bigger names' is the scene... The metal scene worldwide is just as impressive today, unfortunately just not the least bit interesting in the US, in my humble opinion :)
[and many many of my best memories (late 90s/early to mid 2000s) were catching these 'obscure' European metal bands tour in tiny little clubs with 100 people in the audience, shaking hands with the band members and thanking them for coming to play in a country that had no real understanding of their genius!!!!!]

I'm just a few years older than you, but I had the misfortune of having moved to the UK at that time, where getting access to new metal music (in the village I was at) was exceedingly difficult. I really only caught on to the whole scandinavian thing in the mid 2000s when the internet became better.

@@gwaptiva I remember vividly hearing AMORPHIS - TALES FROM THE THOUSAND LAKES in 1994, brought home by a friend who travelled to Finland that year.... I wore out that CD and began mail ordering from the little catalog that was tucked inside.... IN FLAMES - LUNAR STRAIN came in the mail shortly thereafter :)
Getting on the Relapse records, Century Media, and Napalm mailing list was like the internet for metalheads back then!!!

In 2001 I started guitar tech for Alapeno from Big Iron in Dallas, TX and I got him hooked on In Flames, Soilwork, and many other Swedish bands. Alapeno is a well known guitarist in Dallas who grew up with Dimebag and Vinnie Paul and he had some awesome music with Big Iron and PornLab and later with Hellgoat. A club in Dallas called and asked if Big Iron wanted to do a show with In Flames and of course they jumped at it and was one of our favorite memories back then and was a dream come true for me, they were amazing live and awesome guys to hangout with! In Flames forever!!!
