This is the face of "harm reduction" and drug and street camping enablement. Old Town has been consumed by the negative side effects of the operations of various "services" organizations. If the city wants to revitalize its economy, it's gonna need to come up with a different plan, because the sprawling open air insane asylum approach isn't really working all that well.

Watching the director of the garden cry during the interview was heartbreaking. The garden is a beautiful and educational sanctuary in what was only a few years ago a safe urban area, but it is no longer safe, and it is reprehensible that the staff and garden cannot feel and be protected. I live a few blocks away and navigate through downtown mainly on foot, amidst the appalling refuse on the sidewalks and mentally ill or substance addicted people living in tents, and realize the politicians who make the decisions with my and everyone's tax money essentially DO NOT CARE to make effective changes to resolve the blight that has destroyed a lot of areas and businesses.

  • @mrcpaddler

Did a bit of math. So there are 55,000 fewer visitors. The admission price is a nominal $16, and if a visitor spends $10 in the shop that's $26 total. $26 x 55,000 - that's a 1.43 million dollar loss of income per year. And I'm guessing that many other museums, shops, restaurants, and hotels are also seeing big declines in visitors. This downward spiral is really painful - and so many beautiful things, once gone, will be lost forever.

I love the Chinese garden so much, it's so amazing to go there and see how it looks bigger on the inside. Not only that, but absolutely beautiful. I hope the people in charge take an interest in helping things improve downtown. My family is too afraid to go there anymore. We miss it.

For those attacking Portland City government, it's not them, it's Multnomah County, where Portland is located. Portland City government is far from perfect, but they enacted a camping ban that went into effect July 1, 2024. You are given a choice between accepting services and housing, or going to jail. The very first person arrested after the ban went into effect was taken to the county jail which is run by the Multnomah County Sheriff's office. That person was cited and released under the directive of Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O'Donnell who stated that, "I believe we need to utilize the corrections system as a place for people who pose a genuine danger to the public, and that does not include individuals whose only offense is living unsheltered..." In other words, she refused to book the arrested individual. She made it clear that any person arrested under the new city ordinance would not be booked into jail. How do you think that will affect the priorities of the Portland Police with regard to enforcing the new camping ban?

I am appalled at the city's response that their hands are tied. They have been using that same old tired phrase for over 10 years now. This new city government will take at least a year, possibly longer, for anyone in Portland to see any change. These will be representatives vying for attention and funding from every corner of the city. We need to stop catering to the unhoused and start considering the working class, taxpaying public. I would think the homeless advocates and nonprofits have made enough off this human crisis. Time to put an end to it and clean up the city, either by giving them tickets back home or giving them some time in jail. For the people that are actually homeless get them off the street. If there are actually any working class people living in cars, RV's or tents that are drug free they should be the first people to get into housing or apartments. For the others that are mentally ill, drug addicted or criminals get them the help they need. That first has to be accomplished by having a DA and Sheriff's Department that are serious about cleaning up the city. So far I haven't seen that from either one.

It's all about the money. So many problems, and they are all so expensive. We are witnessing the results of late stage capitalism, and soon it will be like this everywhere, not just in Portland. More and more homelessness and drug addiction, more and more people living in cars, more renters and fewer homeowners, and a shrinking middle class, while billionaires buy up all of the hospitals, mobile home parks, single family homes, veterinary clinics, funeral homes, etc.
