  • Just like last year, we continued our experiment with growing potatoes in grow bags from Amazon. Using grow bags from Amazon has proved to be a really effective way of growing many different varieties of food in our small space and this potato harvest isn't any different.

I always plant my potatoes that have sprouted. We eat so little of potatoes they always get chits, I cut them off, let them dry and them put them in a paper bag with the top opened and wait for planting time. I get potatoes too. Thanks for giving God the credit for the food you received.

I planted 2 idaho potatoes that were sprouting in the house, so I buried them. I can't wait to finally harvest mine. I am so tired of seeing potatoes at over $5/bag at the store. I so want to start having a harvest I can keep frozen or stored up so I can keep fries and pot roast fixins in storage for when I need them most. Time to start canning mine when I get that harvest. Ooo, it is gonna be the best year for me yet!

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm a first year gardener and am doing it all in containers because we don't have good soil where we are. Started strong, but bugs/mites and soil issues have been an issue that is rather discouraging and also not knowing what to do or how to fix it because I'm so new to it. All I've been getting harvest wise is enough for a little snack. 😕 Doing my best to learn and I appreciate your encouragement to keep at it and just make adjustments each year. God bless y'all.

Jason and Angela, the next time you go to the grocery store try to pick up a couple of their canvas grocery bags to plant in. They are generally about 3 to 5 gallons depending on the store.. I haven't tried them yet, but I'm planting purple Majesty seed potatoes that I bought. I'll keep you posted on how they grow. I'm going to grow them starting mid September to see if I can get a harvest before the cold weather gets here in Central Florida.

Good job man. I have my allotment filled with mostly fruit trees and bushes. So i will be working with containers in between for my veggies. For ppl wondering why we dont plant in the soil directly bc its the cheapest option. Investing in containers is a future investment plus we harvest more from them from a seed than soil(like you mentioned the dirt can be re used aswell).

Great Video. I love the energy and excitement from both of y'all. I know exactly what you mean about being excited and worried at the same time because you can't see what is happening under the soil. I've been growing potatoes for about 3 years. Every year I try to find a way to grow more. I lost my seed potatoes when the power went out for 30 hours last year and had to buy organic and had a decent haul this year. Saved lots of seed potatoes for next year. Grew 3 different kinds. I find that the larger the container the better my results. I didn't have good luck with a garbage can but I didn't know you had to use a certain kind of potato. Thanks for the info.

I think I want to try your container method next year but with straw on top of the dirt. Can't hurt to try, right? Thanks for the great video.
