I grow potatoes in grow bags. This year I followed your grow bag instructions, adding sulfur and Trifecta. It was the best harvest I've ever had! Red Pontiac, Yukon Gold, Kennebec, and Red Norland. Planted on 3/20 and harvested 6/28.
I'm planning to try this in my atrium this winter, using a 7 gal grow bag. About how much Sulfur & Trifecta did you use? I didn't see Luke's video on this one apparently. Thx!
I actually didn't even get my potatoes planted till early June and decided to do it anyway. I don't know yet how they will harvest, of course, but they are growing like crazy! The best time to plant is when you're supposed to. The next best time is when you actually DO it! 😂 Never hurts to try it anyway.
I have not harvested yet, but I will say that one of my three varieties is also starting to die off early, so it's nice to hear that it may be the case this year for a lot of folks, just due to the weird spring /early summer we've had! Glad you got enough potatoes to make it worth your while. Hopefully I will do at least as well! 😃
I planted 80 potatoes this year. Now I've failed at growing potatoes every year. But this year i followed how you do. I harvested 14 plants so far and got 38 pounds. I'm excited to see what the future harvest holds because im just letting them grow and grow. Thanks so much for the time you put into the channel and the advice you've given all of us.
Low expectations is the key to happiness 😁 I thought my only few potato plants died because of some fungal disease, I didn’t have capacity to check what was it so I neglected them. But couple of days ago I needed my smart pots with soil to plant something else so I checked the soil and found several tubers for each potato plant, yo-ho! They looked beautiful! Central PA. harvested my first batch 3 weeks ago ;) ... 2nd year i tried (first year i gotten about 98 pounds)... and i got 132 pounds (early and a mid early variety) .... and immediatly i refreshed my soil and put in a second batch (with 1 mid early and one late variety) which i will be able to harvest in september an oktober... the 2nd batch of early potatoes we already are planning to donate to local foodbank. (the late variety we will keep to bridge our needs in winter to spring) i do about 50-50 in 2 high raised beds (90 cm/ hugulculture filled) and the rest in about 12 containers (55-90l). planted arround 10 pounds EACH batch (so 20 total) (Netherlands zone 8b-9a)
I had no idea there were assumptions about Taylor 😮💨 Cindy and you just had a baby.....hope you all are going well and Big Sis is enjoying baby brother and the summer garden 😊
I’ve got a garden going here in Texas. Planted our taters in mid Feb and harvested end of May and beginning of June. I planted a total of 20 pounds of Yukon, Kennebec, Red, and purple, and we harvested about 115 pounds. Super excited about the harvest; we are still eating them! The purple taters had really rough skin, and lots of the others had craters in them like something was munching on them (maybe grub worms?).
@Trev5.556. You might look up wire worms. They are the nymphs for the click beetle. They dig a hole in the potatoes but don't stay there. If that's the case, I was told to plant a mustard cover crop. Google it for more advice. Good luck.
@@shirleyk623 I’ll definitely try a mustard cover crop, and maybe a sorghum sedan grass cover crop next year as well because I know there’s bad nematodes there that got my okra. I don’t think these are wire worms though. These are large craters that are on average the size of a pencil eraser or bigger. They aren’t deep either. They’re shallow enough to remove with a potato peeler. Only thing I could think of was grub worm because they have large mouths and we found them in that bed.
@@trev5.566 I had nematodes that would kill my cucumber plants quickly. I planted a nemagone cover crop . (I think I got the seeds from Truleaf market-the seed company) actually have cucumber plants that don't have many nematodes on them. The nematodes didn't kill the plants this time.
I planted a few Yukon Gold relatively late this year and they already seem to be done flowering (one is even growing a fruit, it's crazy how much you can see the relationship to tomatoes.) No dieback yet but maybe I can be optimistic about the one that's starting to look a little yellowish, lol
Cantaloupe just fall off the vine when they are ripe. I grew them last year and got 3 all season. It wasn't worth it for me and my family. I planted extra cucumbers because everyone loves them and pickles.
Is there enough time for a second round of the reds? I am in Michigan and if I could do two harvests in a season it would be ideal to try for next season (I have expended this years growing budget lol)
I feel so much better after seeing this. Mine have almost completely died back and I was debating whether or not to pull them. I’m going to go ahead. Maybe I’ll get a second planting in. We have plenty of time before first frost. 🎉🎉🎉 If all my flowers on the tomato plants develop, we’ll have a bumper crop. First year EVER that I’ve got healthy vines on both watermelon and cantaloupe. Grapes are gorgeous as well.
All mine are still green and some flowering. I have one though that's dying off. Will pull that soon. It's a unknown volunteer. I had a mixture I saved from last year.
I planted 20lbs of Irish Cobbler & got about 44lbs. There could be more in 1 of my other tater beds. Pulled up about 4lbs of Russian Banana taters from 1lb. I have Magic Molly purple taters & I think some kenebecs those 2 haven't died back yet. I planted late this year due to not receiving the taters late. This isn't the 1st time that company sent me late. 2nd year in a row. Seriously doubt if I will order from them again. They wanted to save on shipping costs I figured. Back in the 80s I planted 10lbs of taters & got over 110lbs back. Never had another good year since.
Potatoes have been really hard to grow here in the Phoenix area, for me.One year we had beautiful plants lots of flowers but a couple of large potatoes but nothing to want to try again.
I have a handful of white potatoes that sprouted so I'm planting them tonight. I still have 100 days before First Frost... I figure the worst thing that happens is I don't get any potatoes I wasn't planning on anyway! Thanks Luke! Nice to meet ya, Taylor.
Hi Luke, I was wondering if you would consider selling seed potatoes in your online store. I was going to order some from Tractor supply as they have lots of varieties but was very disappointed to find out I could not have them delivered to my area, so I ended up having to settle for planting some unspecified Russet potatoes from Kroger. The foliage is really massive to the point that I need to prop it up and I see no signs of it dying off yet. I'm growing them in a box so have no idea what kind of harvest I'll get. I hope they are not little tiny ones or rotten. I do have a hole in the bottom of the box for water to drain out. If you do decide to carry seed potatoes I really would like to get some nice red skin potatoes, a purple variety, and a nice Russet baking potato variety. I recently got one of my two orders of seeds from your big 50% off sale and am looking forward to trying them out!
Great vid and harvest.. all my potatoes are done too and have similar size in the harvest. I planted on March 17 so mine came about 3 weeks ago I even put some more in for a later harvest never tried that before but you don't learn by following the " rules "
My potatoes died early too, going to harvest this weekend, had a volunteer come up from last year, that one still looks good. Don’t remember what variety I planted. Hope I have a decent harvest too. ❤❤
Whew, not just me! One of my potato varieties is also dying back and I was groaning about what it might mean... Well, still don't "know", but at least it's not just my lack of gardening skills! Ha!
I just harvested my potatoes they'll be ready on the 24th I'm so excited to try them! It is my first potato Harvest! I collect carrots as I need them. They seem to stay fresh longer in the ground!😊

My first year to grow potatoes and with all the rain almost all of my Yukon gold were rotten mush. I also planted T Rosa who didn’t beef up much but still make okay new potatoes. German Butterball and Red Chieftain did the best.
This year we grew in Mineral tubs that we water from the bottom, and only put 4 plants to each pot and plant two criss cross at low level and two plants criss cross on next higher level opposite side, covered with straw and planted April 1. Always use Black Kow in our mix. Best harvest ever, averaged 10lbs. per pot. Big beautiful potatoes.Years past our harvests were ok, but found that over crowding plants wasn't our friend, competing. Red Pontiac and Russet. Central U.S.
I have tried Yukon gems two years in a row and I'm underwhelmed. It just doesn't perform well here in my setup and climate I guess, so I'm giving up on that one. I'm having much better results from purple viking and russet burbank, but jury is still out on the German butterball and kennebec, fingers crossed!
Great potatoes! I wonder if they might have been a little bit crowded. I find my potatoes are smaller if I plant too close together. I have filled a five gallon bucket from 8 plants more than once. I usually grow red norland, Yukon gold, or russets. To plant I put the potato in a hole the depth of a spade and barely cover the sprouts with soil. As the potato grows I fill the hole until the dirt is mounded up or hilled. I had my worst year ever last year with potatoes because I planted 12 to 14 plants in the space I normally plant 8 and had small potatoes that barely filled a 2.5 gallon bucket. Other than being crowded the potatoes were grown the same as always. Luke, I hope you don’t mind me sharing my 2 cents. You grow such an amazing garden every year.
We planted 15lbs (4 varieties, cut potatoes) of seed potatoes and harvested 82lbs!! 3 beds worth and an entire bed was eaten..EATEN.. by voles 😩 but I canned 30 quarts! Best year yet! My russet burbanks did not do well 😢 won’t grow them again
Last year and this year have been WILD for both gardening and farming; last year everything, and I mean EVERYTHING was a month late. I didn’t harvest the potatoes or garlic, etc. until late August, and even my dairy goat does didn’t go into heat until LATE SEPTEMBER, even though the trend is usually late July to mid August. This year is the exact opposite! I am in SW Washington, and we haven’t had rain since late April, and EVERYTHING has matured early; i harvested the garlic at the end of June/the beginning of July, the potatoes are going to be harvested today, and the does have just come into heat and are bred! The fall garden is going to be interesting! Wild fire season is also two months early here… thats the worst part of it, really…
Mice & moles will eat them. I lost the whole crop 1 year thinking I could do it. 1 of taters beds I had mice eating it just as was dieing back. Be careful if you do
The same thing happened with my potatoes they grew beautifully and then all of a sudden one day they just started tipping over, which is what I expected and this is June 20 and I am able to harvest my potatoes. I’m trying to wait a few more days because it’s one of the favorite thingsabout gardening is digging up potatoes
Wow. Our russet and Yukons are still green, no sign of dying back yet in Northern BC Canada(and we almost had frost last night ) I have been digging for meals and the potatoes are huge.
Mine haven't died back yet. During the cold frost in May, I kept my potato grow bags in a mini greenhouse. That might have something to do with them not dieing back yet. I hope.
So the smoke from the "intentionally" set forest fires in my country of Canada didn't destroy your garden? I can't believe you would think we'd intentionally set our beautiful forests on fire and destroy hundreds of people's homes.
I honestly assumed she was either your younger sister, niece, cousin, or daughter. Wife is the last thing I would pick given she still has a young face and very teenage make-up sensibilities.
I am on a low carb diet but was asked to make my potato salad for a potluck. I was about to throw away the skins but thought, "why don't I plant rhem in tge enpty spots in my garden where ny new dog trampled some other things. I have a bunch of potato plants growing from those potato skins. I am not expecting much from them but they are growing nice plants so far!
Plants are maturing early this year. The onions started tipping and that normally happens in August. Best were Red Pontiacs we grew in more clay like loam. They were huge. They née nitrogen to start them off and phosphorus and potash along with even water while tubers are forming.
Onions were my first try (the Ntherlands 8b/9a) .... harvested them mid june already(decent to big size), and according to some localfarmers it was at least a month early
My Yukon golds were very early this year in Southern Maryland. Went away on vacation and they had died back late June - about two weeks earlier than usual. Harvest was better than last year even though we were very dry while we were away. Go figure...
I saw at one time, that potato plants were to be cut out and then two weeks later, they would be pulled up. This is not necessary, to leave them in the ground for two weeks after plants are cut or dead? Great videos and thanks for posting them!
I just cant believe how they have access to just such a large variety of fruits , trees and plants. Feels like they live in paradise. Fresh produce right on their door step , surrounded by nature and enjoyed together in a close knit family and community! All the money in the world cant buy what they have.
I harvested half my potato space yesterday, leaving the rest to finish (different variety and still flowering). It was a decent yield but there were many small boiler potatoes in this batch as well. I would venture to say the harvest is about 10 pounds of potatoes.
Thanks, Luke. I used your suggestions & procedure regarding growing potatoes in grow bags. I followed it exactly with great success. Thanks again 🙏 from Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. 🇨🇦🍁
We're growing Huckleberry Gold Potatoes, a low glycemic potato developed by Montana State University. We still have about 3+ weeks before they're ready.
I bought 2 varieties this year, don't remember the names (I should really make a note of that next time), but they're still growing. One variety is starting to die off, but may have a couple more weeks, and the other is looking a lot like your late-season variety.
Last year I had to have my 8 year old help me. We were expecting a storm. He helped but not happily at first. Once I showed him how and told him it was like a treasure hunt we had a blast. He even found a salamander.

That theme music sounds pretty worn out
Taylor looks like she's 16. I never would have guessed she's your wife 😂😂
Hard to tell in videos, but she's 23!
Good harvest! now to wait for the maincrops 👌 I still have a month before i harvest my potatoes!
Will you do a second crop of potatoes?
My potatoes are just starting to die back. I’ve never done this before so I was worried that I killed them. 🤷♂️
We harvested potatoes in early June. Nothing grows in Texas right now. LOL.
My potatoes seem ready really early too. I'm like, what's going on?!
Can you leave potatoes in the ground till winter?
Mice & moles will eat them. I lost the whole crop 1 year thinking I could do it. 1 of taters beds I had mice eating it just as was dieing back. Be careful if you do
Live your videos, love your online seed store! I appreciate your content and your customer service very much!
I hope.
I just have two kinds with flowers. The others are not. There's a couple flowers but not much.
So the smoke from the "intentionally" set forest fires in my country of Canada didn't destroy your garden? I can't believe you would think we'd intentionally set our beautiful forests on fire and destroy hundreds of people's homes.
Teach them to be gentle. 🙃
It seems like things are growing in a weird way, differently
I noticed everything seemed to be off by a month
Onions were my first try (the Ntherlands 8b/9a) .... harvested them mid june already(decent to big size), and according to some localfarmers it was at least a month early
My Yukon golds were very early this year in Southern Maryland. Went away on vacation and they had died back late June - about two weeks earlier than usual. Harvest was better than last year even though we were very dry while we were away. Go figure...
Not your wife, hello Taylor. Pleasure miss❤
Adirondack blue or red, can you give us more information on this and if its advisable to grow them in MI
I agree the fun of potatoes is like each plant is a surprise gift lol
this is so fun!y potatoes havent died yet, its still green & thriving ...
I harvested half my potato space yesterday, leaving the rest to finish (different variety and still flowering). It was a decent yield but there were many small boiler potatoes in this batch as well. I would venture to say the harvest is about 10 pounds of potatoes.
What if my potato plant seemed to die but then started pushing out new green growth?
Thank you for the information
When do you know to stop watering your dying potato plants?
Ummm... where was the crazy big harvest?
Thanks, Luke. I used your suggestions & procedure regarding growing potatoes in grow bags. I followed it exactly with great success. Thanks again 🙏 from Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. 🇨🇦🍁
I had 6 plants and tge chipmunks pulled them all andcate the roots, so no potatoes 😢
Lol, people are ridic. Love you Cindy❤
We're growing Huckleberry Gold Potatoes, a low glycemic potato developed by Montana State University. We still have about 3+ weeks before they're ready.
Little harvest is better than no harvest!
I bought 2 varieties this year, don't remember the names (I should really make a note of that next time), but they're still growing. One variety is starting to die off, but may have a couple more weeks, and the other is looking a lot like your late-season variety.
