- We recently harvested our sweet potatoes that we grew in grow bags from Amazon. It was the best sweet potato harvest that we've ever had and shows that you can grow a great amount of food in containers and in a small space.

When I was a teenager, in the 90's, you could have never convinced me that I would be 40 years old watching Potato harvesting videos and being genuinely excited for someone else's Potato harvest! How I've changed! (For the better for sure) lol

Just grow your own slip.
One note, the potato is a tuber not a root, those thin hairy things are roots.
Have you ever save a few back and grew your oun slips?
We haven't to this point but that is something that we've considered with these
How many did you plant in that one container?
Its better to put it on the ground coz when its in the bag when the roots grow the soil become compact or hard so the sweet potatoes doesnt grow well,,next time put it on the ground and some fertilizer so you can have a great harvest,,just sayin thanks..
the variety of sweet potato that we grew is called Covington. That variety doesn't grow big and round like others do. While we possibly could have had a better harvest it's not due to them being planted in grow bags and not in the ground.

Beautiful! I’ve never, in my 62 years, eaten a sweet potato or yam. Ever 🤷♀️ They’re always served with marshmallows on top? Um, no thanks. Lol. I’m betting you’ll teach us something better?
You can bake them in the oven without marshmallows. Put butter in once they're done.
Or peel and boil them. They can then be eaten as is or used to make potato salad
They make excellent pies
I normally steam mine and eat with butter but sliced and fried like a French fry...yummy too!

Can u please tell me how to plant the slips? I cut the slips off the plant & put them in water, it's now about a week later and the slips all have little roots. Do I now plant the whole slip full of the roots or do I just plant the roots? HELP! Thanks.
You plant them so that the roots are about 1 to 2 inches deep and the leaves and the stems are out of the ground. Does that help?
What kind of soil did you use for these bags? I have a few 20 gallon bags I’d like to plant sweet potatoes in but wonder if I need to use crappy soil like I’m thinking lol. I used compost and sandy soil and only got potatoes from the sandy soil one.🤷🏻♀️I hear they don’t care for much nitrogen.
Yes they don't need too much nitrogen BUT they do need plenty of phosphorus and potassium. We used a mix of compost that we had made and a good potting mix. We also fertilized heavy with bone meal (phosphorus) and kelp meal (potassium). As a general rule, they need twice as much phosphorus and potassium as they need nitrogen but, in reality, if you use organic fertilizer like bone meal and kelp meal, then it's hard to over fertilize them.

Which grow bags did you buy, there are many on Amazon.
we used 25 gallon grow bags for the sweet potatoes. I would assume all of the brands on Amazon are pretty similar
How long did you grow them in the grow bag?? I've got one in the pot that's been going for a couple of months now that I'm happy too leave for a good few years?? LOL!!
This variety is ready for harvest just a little quicker than others. These are Covington sweet potatoes and they were ready in about 100 days or so. Most varieties need to go around 120 days or so

a mix of our homemade compost and potting mix

Where can I buy some sweet potato slips
I ordered some from Sand Hill Preservation site this year for the first time.
Usually feed stores sell the potatoes and you can make your own slips from them.
I've ordered slips from Baker Creek online before, too.

we used 6 25 gallon grow bags. I'm sure a 20 gallon would be fine
