  • There's a ceramic air heater built into the intakes for the Toyota Land Cruiser engine, but the power drawe is known as a battery and alternator killer. Also, it's a restriction on airflow. Here in the UK it isn't needed for cold starts due to our mild climate, so I'm going to chop it out.

Turns out the 1HD-FT in the HDJ80 and HDJ81 have the exact same air heater part, so I discovered your video searching around. Turns out my bolt terminal is loose; and looks like it needs some tightening, and your teardown of the air intake and putting the bolt terminal back on was super helpful in understanding what's going on here!
I don't want to tear the air intake apart to delete it, or to tighten up the bolt because I'm afraid I couldn't put it back together... I live in Washington state in the USA, and it can get pretty cold here. So we'll see how it goes! Fortunately my two Philips screws did get loose and come out, but you're definitely right that they're locktited in there.

Glad the video was helpful! I eventually got them out with a heat gun which broke the loctite. I've had no issues or engine lights since disconnecting the power from it. I'm sure there's a wiring document from Toyota which describes the conditions and temperatures where the heater is deployed. That might help you decide if you even need it.

@@landcruiserscotland I spent a while looking at various factory engine and truck service manuals I have, and couldn't find anything that would describe the behavior (although a lot of ways to test that it works).
I ended up just unplugging the lead on the relay for this circuit, will put it back together and sort it out later (in the fall before it gets cold). Thanks so much for the help again!

Yes did this mod in 2010 I have fitted a barb adapter in hole where the nut was for a boost guage but i am trailing and electronic boost guage and have since fitted a pressure transducer in place of machanical gauge and barb.

Great video! I have removed that heater also. My LC 100 starts No problem even -32°c Finnish winter. No codes appear when the cable is disconnected.

That's brilliant news, thanks for that confirmation! Where in Finland are you? I have a friend on the west coast near Oulu and his winter looks terrifying. Especially the polar bears.

You’ll find that you can bolt the butterfly valve to the intake without the heater block just need 4 shorter bolts

Do you know if there's enough wiggle room on the other piping and brackets?

Any updates on this? Did it throw any error codes

I'll be fitting it next week so I'll update to let everyone know. Some others have unplugged the relay with no issues though

@landcruiserscotland cool I'll look forward to that!
Have you put the egr delete into it yet? I'm thinking of doing the same on my 100 series here in New Zealand and just trying to figure out if it's going to put up error codes.

Definitely no engine management light. No issues whatsoever!
