Gary Thain was the reason I picked up the bass some 45 yrs ago. He was and still is my favourite bassist. I would say to anyone interested in his talents.. check out 1 track alone.. Sweet Lorraine of the Uriah Heep Live 73 album... That one track says it all in my opinion. Just brilliant playing......and he looked amazing.

I remember the accident in Dallas, I’d be around 15 and was a big fan. There are pictures of him performing in New Zealand shortly after and he looks very frail. He was super talented and it’s no surprise Heep enjoyed their best period 72/75 when Gary was on board. He also looked great . Much missed.

I was lucky enough to see Gary play with Uriah Heep in Springfield Massachusetts. He was wearing the white furry boots with matching hat. He was amazing!

I knew Ken Hensley in the late 80s where he worked as a consultant for St. Louis music Company on Ferguson Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri. Great guy, great keyboard artist..

I've heard some amazing things about how this guy plays! Unlike anyone else apparently. Going to have to listen to some Uriah Heep's albums he was on. Thanks for this. Love learning about different artists 💗💯😁

The band were so good during Gary's time with them. They seemed to knock out classic after classic.

I was not a great fan of Uriah Heep. Though I did greatly enjoy some of their tunes. But later on I saw some videos...and this thin dude was one of the best bass players ever. Him and Rob Grange previously with ted Nugent also n the mid 70's. A rare gem he was.

The "One of the true greats" label is terribly overused but in this case, it's appropriate. A player and a band that never got the recognition they each deserved, in my opinion.

Uriah Heep had some GREAT bassists - Mark Clarke(very briefly) John Wetton/Trevor Bolder - but in my opinion he was without a doubt the player who fit the style of UH the best. And he was obviously with them when they enjoyed their greatest success.

My friend and I attended a Uriah Heep concert in 1975 shortly before Thain's death. Shortly into the show Thain collapsed on stage, apparently from an overdose, and we all were sent away without the remaining band members finishing the concert. At the time there was a lot of resentment that nobody got a refund. It was pathetic.

So sad 😓 You probably didn't realize at the time the seriousness of his problems as there was no social media back then. At least you got to see him and the classic lineup for a little bit, I would've loved to do that ❤ Thank you for sharing 🥰
