Tommy Bolin is a legend! Check this out folks - James Gang (with Tommy Bolin) Live Buffalo Memorial Hall - ua-cam.com/video/C_eqMncmMUs/v-deo.htmlsi=5zAOGkYVCg6-taaG
I saw Tommy at Winterland in San Fran probably 1975. He was high as a kite on something...he looked scared (I was up against the stage). A flash of light.
I'm Dutch, born in 1961. Deep Purple became mid 70ies my all time favorite band and Ritchie Blackmore my all time favorite guitarplayer. To me Deep Purple without Gillan and Glover wasn't Deep Purple anymore. It just doesn't come close... Sorry Tommy!
In an interview in LA June 21 1975 (published in NME August 2 that year) Bolin asked "Blackmore put a good word in for me, didn't he". And Coverdale answered "No, nobody said anything", followed by Tommy saying "You liar Blackmore, you lying"...
Yes, Ritchie's ex girlfriend - Shoshana Feinstein - said a similar thing about Ritchie. She was a singer in the band "Dark Star" in 1975. They were recording their first demo. This is what she said: "Richard told my guitarist John Angelina that he would bring our songs to his record company Warner Brothers. I found out twenty years later that he never did bring those tapes to Warner Brothers."
Tommy was a monster and had all the talent in the world, but he didn't really care for the MKII material. They also talked to Ronnie Montrose about the gig but he was unenthused about it.
Can you make a vid on Ritchie Blackmore meeting with Iron Maiden as I am sure there is a pic of Blackmore with maiden also did Blackmore ever talk about Rory Gallagher that would be interesting too !!
In fact, Purple wanted Rory Before Tommy. Rory turned down the Purple gig. Why I will never know. In Purple he would have been mentioned with the greats. We know he's great. Most people never heard of him. He had his shoot at being big time. Rip Tommy and r Rory.
I found this. Ritchie Blackmore's comment on Rory Gallagher: “Rory was probably the most natural player I’ve ever seen. In all the gigs we did together I don’t think I ever heard him play the same thing twice... He was the ultimate performer.” Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple

In an interview in 1976 - Blackmore said he thought very highly of him but was woried that he was self destructive. I guess he was right.

blackmore n'est pas le monstre que la presse et beaucoup de personne disent.il a reconnu le talent de tommy et la perte pour la musique.
Bolin was great-no doubt about it-but nowhere near Blackmore's level overall.
Not many are he's a Mount Rushmore guitarist.
Tommy could combine jazz and rock very well. Almost as well as he could combine booze/drugs and death. 😂
