I do know your pain. Helped my father refurbish a Round Bottom Poulsbo fishing boat. He bought it from a fishman that was upgrading. Hundreds of hours sanding, grinding, removing and replacing planks, installing a period correct engine, steering, etc. Then, putting in thousands of brass screws and hundreds of feet of clinking. Thought my summer was going to be fun... NOPE. Took 2 1/2 years from disassembly to finish.
Luke, I don't envy your pain. I feel like you need to ask your 16.5K subscribers to sign up for a volunteer day and put us to work. I have no doubt you'd have a small army to help you renovate both boats.
Just finished turning an abandoned sailboat into a crabber so I'm free if you need me. I don't do fiberglass, paint, removing barnacles or any crab pot repairs but I'll work for crabs if you have any like clothes to fold or anything. @@fvsoutherngirl
Get you some of those restaurant quality rugs to put on your floor it’ll help your back , protect the floor, look nicer and prevent anything from sliding during rough seas !!! It’s the orange/red colored rugs with the holes in it. A thick rubber type material. You can cut them to fit the space . Trust me you’ll love it
They make a clear sealer for roofs that can be brushed or rolled on! Stuff is awesome, I’m sure it could seal a boat! Can’t remember the name but it’s available at most hardware stores. Should seal the old gel coat and then some
so when i worked at a caterpillar dealer years ago we used Sherman William's marine grade paint on the concrete in our shop. It was a two part paint that was absolutely tough as nails. We drove metal tracked dozers and 30 ton excavators across it without any issues you may want to look into it
This is all so you can tell your kids some day what NOT to do, or how it should be done. Seriously, you're doing an excellent job of depicting the struggle of the uncommon man. I WISH I could do all the things you're doing that I used to do! Good show!
This channel is amazing inspiration. Seeing someone not much older then myself working hard and succeeding for themselves is incredible. Really appreciate you showing some of the struggles along with the good times. One of these days ill have ti head south and buy some crabs
Any decent topside paint (poly) with some grit thrown in on spots where you step and extra coats in high wear spots. Grinder with a sanding pad goes quicker than a sander but just be careful!
I envy you, my friend. You have a lot going on, but all of it are positive. Your drive is commendable. Do it right the first time you won't have to do it again.
I was always taught if you do it thr right way it should be done it will last you a lot longer in the future i could never half ass something i just dont feel right you want to be pround of the work you do its much leds to worry about in the long run
Welcome to fiberglass! 32 grit , also different types of fiberglass, they don't like each other, also scuff and apply new, before moisture embers the fresh sanding. Overnight dew bad, no super hurry, just same day
Hey bud you should watch some total boat videos about glassing, youll get the boat painted an caeaned up when you come to the realization that gelcoat over glass especially polyester glass is the way to go, btw thats a polyester glass boat
I seen a lot of boats with gelcoat paint do the same here and how are you? I use epoxy paint Valspar that’s what they use to paint airplanes with and can handle the banging around and doesn’t chip easy at all and it’s way cheaper
Absolutely..best boat is a friends boat🤣 I have to do a haul out and blast the crap out of everything...boats are the best way to have a million bucks...start with 2 million
Genuine B.O.A.T. (Break out another thousand) AKA hole in the water into which you pour money. It’s looking like you’re making good progress though. Four decades ago I used to teach dinghy sailing and had a lot of fiberglass repair to do every weekend! Itchy stuff. Students are hard on boats, but I’d imagine a work boat is exposed to rough times too! Good luck with the project!
Would you like some cheese to go with that whine 🤣😂. Yeah boats suck and I’m not even a commercial fisherman 😂😅. Keep up the good work dude Much love from NC🤙
Do you think it might hide continuing issues? Thats my only fear of waterproof membranes like that is that you can't see the problem until your floating on a sheet of flex seal. still, works in the commercials.
Man! I kept wanting to see you break out the power sanders or shot blasters or something that would save you from the antique hand scraper. Sometimes the old ways are the only ways, but you know, you're the youngest crabber on the big B, maybe you should consider one of those fast and furious paint jobs? Like a big crab holding a sword that runs up the side of the boat with some cool tribal tattoo camouflage all over. You would be the envy of all the old men! Oh, and play load rock and roll onboard all the time.
Fiberglass was put down the proper way. The small first going with bigger each time leads to more edges that introduces de-lamination spots. aka impossible to squeeze out the air where the two pieces meet. Let me know if you got any questions I've spent the last 8 years working on boats, doing countless repairs and complete overhaul/rebuild projects.
Drill the holes oversize, fill with epoxy-rich slurry, cure then redrill holes. This ensures water cannot penetrate core under the glass. 5200 is a great adhesive sealer but doesn't penetrate wood/glass and lock it all together like epoxy will. Epoxy is an structural adhesive, I use it almost exclusively wherever I can, 5200 as a sealer between water-tight surfaces, trying to ensure water cannot penetrate into the interface.
My guess would be that it was ether built with or caped with epoxy at some point and then someone tried to use normal gelcoat on it. Gelcoat will not bond very well at all to epoxy. If you want it to stick and be really durable. Use a thickened white epoxy.
"This will take 5 years off my life" This reminds me of a comic (randy feltface i think?) That did a bit that goes ... "what ever is gonna finally kill me ... I already did it."
looks like someone just used cheap flat latex on that, I would if you what it to last and I know it's expensive Use two-stage epoxy like Interlux. I use that on the bottom of my grady white and it was still there 20 years when I finally got rid of it.
You need a class in fiberglass work. You did a decent job but there are a few things you could do to make it better. If you need a few pointers on fiberglass just let me know. Free of charge.
Do yourself a favor my friend, get a 3500 psi pressure washer and I guarantee you that you won't need to spend one dollar on sand paper or lot's of hours sanding. Just saying. And PS: Dry dock the boat before you do that, if DNR finds you sanding or pressure washing paint into the water, I just guessing , about 3 to 6 thousand dollars in fines. just saying....Keep up the good fight, love your videos...
You know what "BOAT" stands for right? Bring On Another Thousand 🤣 I think you make the right decisions brother, so you will be fine! I bought my boat 8 months ago, and I'm living on it and enjoying myself...until I got into an accident at work...now all work on my boat stopped😪 So...I will watch you work, because I have nothing else to do 😆 Keep it up Luke! Oh and here is my little project here in Amsterdam! ua-cam.com/channels/57VBtQIpQ-nbynO2f8H1dA.html
Luke I’m a little old man. I’m no as smart as wealthy as you. Go to a paint store. Take pictures of your project. Show them what have and how you want it to .
Boats are like children and dogs. Best one is someone else's. Non boaters have no idea how much work and money has to go into them. Fuel is the small part. Had boats, bigger than trailer boats, since 1981. GRRRRRR! I love to hate boats.
Young Daniel Son , paint westsytem fiberglass is in every watermans shed. You ain't no crabber if you ain't got it in the shed. Where is CJ??? Btw who built your boat ? Is it glass hull or glass over wood?
This dude seems chill. Hope his channel goes into the millions 🎉
447,000 now, was at 16,000 eleven months ago

Use a Modified Urethane it's flexible and will stick to the Fiberglass. You can use a Vinyl Flake in the Urethane to give it a texture or a Quartz.
Luke, I don't envy your pain. I feel like you need to ask your 16.5K subscribers to sign up for a volunteer day and put us to work. I have no doubt you'd have a small army to help you renovate both boats.
I would bring my boy down
Hey not a bad idea!
I'd do it
I'm a boater. I'd help but I'm in AZ

I’ll definitely look into it!
Oh yes this one goes in the keeper file

This boat reminds me of my first 72 Chevy impala. I loved that Chevy. But at some point you have to when to stop throwing good money after bad.😊
Keep up the noble work, nice to see a young guy with ambition!
I'm exhausted 😢 just watching this
Your an amazing young man, keep up the hard work.

Love this show you are one he'll of a guy keep up the hard work
3:47 man, fer them screw wholes, bits of Dowel work fantastic, an then a few postage stamps worth of fiberglass and reason , an she be mint
You're crazy articulate, keep on keeping on

A suggestion for the floor... Get the spray in bed liner at Depot. Pretty durable stuff.
Not a bad idea! I got some paint already tho!
You go my brother I had a freshwater boat I used to pull a shrimp net off of Oak Island North Carolina and yes saltwater will eat anything up
Can't see it from my Yard.
We could change that!
keep that drive alive and you will succeed in life!
You need that crazy navy trowel on slip proof shmoo for the floor. That stuff is crazy!
Luke the way I see it your whole life is an adventure and we enjoy watching however it turns out! Now turn your camera on and get on with it!! Lol!
Hey brother, they dont take years off your life, it adds years of wisdom.
The Wisdom to never buy another boat again
It's all in the surface prep. If it's not clean and dry, the gel coat won't stick, it's that simple...
I’m going with paint this time
Keep grinding Luke!!!!!

Can you use a small sandblaster and a small compressor? You should paint it with the stuff they use for truck beds that spray on bed liner
good idea!
I am impressed that you did this without dry docking
It’s definitely a pain to do in the wayer
I still think you should use Flex Seal paint, it’s so durable and completely water tight!
Do you think it might hide continuing issues? Thats my only fear of waterproof membranes like that is that you can't see the problem until your floating on a sheet of flex seal. still, works in the commercials.

Came here to say just that. Are you local to MD John, I'm in the market for just those services.
All your hard work is going to pay off and you have to give linzee a lot of credit as well.
Good on you thanks ,I'd fix your roof section with a saw , just chop it off n bin it ,go a light weight frame n tarp it ,half your weight n work load
5200 is my go-to quick fix for the holes 😂
That was my previous fix! Haha
Drill the holes oversize, fill with epoxy-rich slurry, cure then redrill holes. This ensures water cannot penetrate core under the glass.
5200 is a great adhesive sealer but doesn't penetrate wood/glass and lock it all together like epoxy will.

Sorry for your loss. Earbuds are hard to replace!
Thank you. Moment of silence for my air pod.
That’s a good name for a boat “Ambitious Endeavor “!

Yes. Gel coat will bond to polyester resin but doesn’t bond well over epoxy.
Have you tried Herculiner, the stuff you roll on. It supposed to be like the spray in bed liner.
LOL... i am getting serious stand up comedy vibes! Hilarious only because i can relate (not the boat) part but life in general.
thanks for vids ,always good, i would come up for a volunteer day, during the week is best for me
Thanks for watching! Yeah maybe!
have you though about any of the spray on truck bed-lining stuff stuff for the floor?
Probably wouldn’t work great. Things kinda need to slide a little on the floor.
Nice window art😂
If I were closer, I’d help out where I could!
Make sure you and the crew use mask most boats have some lead paint.
Eis alaska's channel is working on a glass boat like yours, the emerald isle is a beutiful build you should check it out
Rhino liner for the deck.

Quick tip, set up time lapse so you can get content while working
awesome vids love this
Watching you suffer makes me sad but they way you video makes me laugh.
Crazy how you came up 100k subs in 3 months
Pool paint works great on boats it epoxy paint!!!
Grinder with a sanding pad is really quick. Just pay attention!
Hard pads on a Grinder are really good I’ve found!
One day Luke will mount some fishing chairs on top for channel fans to drop a line behind the boat while crabbing.
You have nice weather for the next few days to get a lot done. Lol.
This is true!
Hey would the epoxy like youd put on yoir garage floor work? It last to working on cars and chemicals. Very durable.
Best way to learn.. this way next time.. it will b way easier lol 😂
@fvSoutherngirl Ask Lou from tips from a ship wright here on UA-cam about your gel coat painting issues. The fella is an amazing boat builder
ill look into him! thanks buddy!
Tractor paint or bedliner rino liner linex

Flying paint chips without safety glasses or sun glasses. You need those eyes to catch crab my man.
The most interesting videos
on the net
Look for a zinc primer from Ameron paint. It’ll hold up pretty well
ill look thanks!
@@fvsoutherngirl it was a two part epoxy mixture, I think it was 302 Dimecote
Luckily we've had some decent weather for this time of year - but then again... All that work isn't lucky at all!
I did it to myself 🥲
Why don't you get deck skins. They use them on fishing boats jet ski's really easy to clean up nice to walk on very durable

Had the same problem doing paint on my boat last year worst job ever
agreed!
It could be worse. It could be a wood boat.
True that!
Seems they didn't pain the boat properly
flex seal that boat......😂
Twice as much money and 3 times as much time...yeppers that's a boat alright

Buddy hampton built her
Experience is a harsh teacher…
Are you spiffin’ her up to sell? Or are you gonna run both

Polyurethane top coat. IMO
lmao, 100% me 11:25
Teardown is always quicker than the rebuild. The project car hits too close to home.
I bet!

they will tear me up hahaha
Invite a bunch of friends to a big BBQ with free beer, once they get there put to work
How old are you Luke?
U seem super young
But I’ve heard u say you’ve been crabbing for many years
Luke keep going it will be fine, it’s just a crab boat. Lol ❤
I agree!
