This method really won't clean the back side of the throttle body which is where the sticking of the throttle plate occurs. Secondly drilling holes in the intake hoses and taping them will encourage a vacuum leak in the future.
Nathan -- Thanks so much for this great tip!!!! It totally worked on my 2003 Audi A4 3.0....saved me so much time and money! No one could figure out what was wrong for so long and it was dangerous to drive. For anyone who doubts this, they are wrong. It should be the first thing you try with these sort of symptoms!
i am no mechanic but putting holes in a truck doesn't sound like a good idea, it just as easy to take the parts off and do it right, i do mine once a year and takes 15 min to do
Can't understand why you made hole in air intake when you had it all loose anyway and the throttle body looking you in the face ????
I can't wait to see him rebuild an engine!
Interesting approach, I generally just move the intake tube over to the side and use a blue shop towel with the throttle body cleaner to scrub off the carbon with the vehicle turned off. Keeps nearly all of the contaminants on the disposable rag, only takes a minute or two, and keeps the intake tube intact instead of trusting a tiny screw to stay in place. although it only makes a small hole, if that screw falls out your intake will suck air through it at a much higher velocity than it will from the rest of the system as in doesn't have "flow restrictions" such as the filter and MAF sensor. An intake will always draw air from the source with the least resistance at a much higher rate, and that high velocity air coming in will be from the top of the engine bay away from the edges of the hood where it stands a chance to suck in fresh, cool air. Heat rises so the middle top of the engine bay would theoretically be the hottest point in the bay meaning the air coming in at a high velocity from that hole will be as hot as possible, be unfiltered and very likely filled with contaminants such as dirt. Basically if that screw ever falls out than you could end up suffering very minor performance losses with potentially medium engine damage as dirt will be free to travel into the combustion chamber. Maybe try gaff or gorilla tape, taking an extra 30 seconds to clean it with a shop rag by hand, or just avoid the build up on the throttle body by installing a $12 breather filter or spending $20 on an oil catch can? the PCV valve is what causes the build up in the first place. I honestly respect your ingenuity and think that your video was very well put together. I don't mean any disrespect towards you with this comment, just adding what I know from experience.
Screw will never fall out. The hole is very small. Some engines will not run when you unhook the air cleaner. Running the motor will help the get the gump out in the intake a "rag" can't reach also. Thanks for you comment!
but the engine doesn't need to be running in order for you to clean the throttle body. just do it by hand with the engine off, it doesn't ruin oem parts, takes a comparable amount of time, and does an all around better job at cleaning the throttle body ;)
Jeff Knaack ....But trying to spray in to the intake or cleaning where a rag won't reach is not an advantage? Inside the intake is where 70% of sludge hides. Try getting a rage in them passageways!. ..But I get your point. I often to extra distance ...to achieve maximum results. Spraying will clean out inside the intake some if you can keep it runing.
i dont know bro i think this is a pretty good idea. i gust read about a guy doing it your way & he ruined the throttle body sensor cost him 180.00 bucks. its only a freaking truck. usually when you have to do this am pretty sure you have over 100,000 miles my truck has over 350,000 & still ticking witch im about to clean the throttle body this way cause i cant see me buying 180.00 bucks for a new throttle body. but i can tell you i would not do this to my family car.
if you ruin a throttle body by cleaning it, you have no business working under the hood. That's the equivalent of the one stupid kid that everyone laughed at in high school for jamming a paper clip in the electrical outlet. Just use common sense lol. this is my last comment on this because anyone who cleans a throttle body by swiss cheesing their intake shouldn't be working on any car, ever!!!
This did a great job in cleaning the intake manifold valves in my 2008 Jeep Patriot 2.4l engine. I didn't create a hole in the manifold. I just disconnected the air filter and sprayed past the air mass sensor. Worked great! Thanks for sharing.
Is better not to sorry through mass sensor
Nathan that was awesume!!! I've been cleaning out my own throttle bodies for yrs with great luck but I've never thot of your pin hole trick ahead of the MAF sensors!
1. Warm up engine. 2. Remove air box and duct.3.spray into throttle, and open throttle spraying the underside of throttle plate 4. Take a clean rag or paper towel and wipe.. let the car sit for 30 min.to let excess cleaner evaporate..start the car... No need to rev the engine.just let it idle.more the likely when you first start the engine it may run a little rough. No big deal.:)
.
.
Thanks for sharing! There are a lot of way to to this. I like your Idea also!
Pp
May as well just remove the TB and spray & wipe so you get both sides of butterfly valve as well as the inside & inner wall........
@@Wes_5kyph1 I've done that and have even gone as far as removing the entire intake throttle body and Automatic Idle valve and cleaned everything without even starting car because I've been concerned what all that gunk may do to the o2 sensors and the Cat.
THANKS FOR SHARING TO PEOPLE A FEW THINGS THEY SHOULD NEVER DO IN THEIR VEHICLE .
Thanks for sharing on how much you don't know!~
Excellent idea. Instead of a screw ( which may distort the hole after time and suck some air I used a good silicone sealant for a air tight intake.
True.
Be sure the silicone is dry before you start the engine
This worked beautifully. No oil issues..
Car actually runs better.
Thank you Nathan
Good deal!
Imagine how much better it would run if you had cleaned it the proper way, not what was shown in this video......
My dad always took every thing apart, like house cleaning. You could valcume around it or move it.
A couple questions for the people worried about where the "crud" goes. Where do you think it came from? Where do you think it would have went if it didn't stick to the throttle body? Do you think that the "crud" that is stuck to the throttle body is 100 % of the "crud" that entered the throttle body?
I know right! You'd think that ''curd" was something that going was going to blow up the motor by a lot of comments. Dirty oil will cause more damage to a motor than any "curd" will ever do. Its fun reading comments!
taxid3rmy
But maybe it’s a good idea to do it just before oil change then, if it goes to the engine block, it’s just a little contaminant to the engine oil, which one can then leak off, for a fresh oil.
Retitled: "The Lazy mans way to semi-clean and permanently damage your throttle body."
Thank you, great video! I was dreading having to do my truck (5.7L Chevy) the long way.An old-timer told me about this method too lol!
I would like to see how clean the throttle body is on the down stream side of the butterfly , you didn't show that . I can clean the front of the TB and both sides of the butterfly with engine off, using a tooth brush and some TBI cleaner. Then start it up, open the throttle a little giving it a shoot or two of mouth wash. The tooth brush will reach way down stream and get that too .
NO! Do not put any holes in any hoses no matter how much time it takes, you should see whats going on and just how dirty it is. Don't forget. every hose is under a lot of pressure.
Right... like 10,000 psi ! lol
Ok.
Ya Fred Even Vacuum lines are under hundreds of pounds of pressure
For fuck's sake, this way all the gunk will be sucked in to the engine. Not to mention ruining the feul injection. Please do not do this to your car. Take the air flow hoss off, its just a couple of clamps, and then clean the throttle body with, carborator /throttle body cleaner.
Na, Works great. feul sensor?? lol ....OK what ever you say ...
Nathan Rohrbough I meant feul injection*, my bad.
Got ya!....Have a Great day!
Nathan Rohrbough you too.
aha ! what brilliant idea ! you can even design MAF hose and patantized it ! very clever idea ! save lot of work/time! and you can regularly clean MAF-throttle valve. Thanks lot of your uploading video ! Very good professional idea~ Love it !!!
Thanks Nathan I am with you in this 100 percent, this is called hack.
No!!!!! Do not puncture holes in your hoses..... Holy Shit!!
I was thinking does this process also help you to clean up the EGR valve?
Actually no. You almost have to always have to take it part to access the inside the EGR. Thanks for watching!~
I would never do this. Just take the air box off. You waste more time drilling that stupid hole than doing it correctly.
this is an excellent hack, pure genius
Man, that worked well. Thanks for the video.
Thank so much for your video,,Very informative,,You saved me the labor pains,,Lol ,,Labor charges..,,God Bless.
****WARNING****.... Do NOT clean a Lexus throttle body like this, it would probably be the last thing you ever do with that Lexus (including driving it)!
So it all the gunk went in side the engine. Would it cause more problem in the future?
Na, actually less harmless than forgetting to change your oil and oil filter (that does way more damage that a can of cleaner will ever do) ;D
Never start making holes in your automobile, there are much easier ways to do this. 🙈
As I said also. Tanks for watching!
what about ford electronic throttle body ? when you remove and clean you are careful not to spray the electronics but with this method the spray will go everywhere ?
Why would you make a hole in a hose or cover and then plug it with a screw ?
Let me ask someone.
kevin russo...you just asked the $1 Billion dollar question. You did omit a few choice words in that #$%@ing question though. Ha.
Actually is a 2.88 cent question
i'm not a rocket scientist but how would this get into your oil and require two oil changes? it's going into the combustion and out the exhaust. As for whether it cleans the other half of the TB, my question is why do half the job? And secondly, why poke a hole in anything at all? another way for moisture to get where it doesn't belong. and lastly if your system is so fragile that you cant open the hose or port then that part is bad already ... right?
Bingo....you understand! Pro's and con's of everything in life. Thnak's for viewing!
@@FixingWithPassion LOL
In fact I've never herd of MAF (P) spray cleaner! I would assume since those r electrical parts they would take electrical nonconducting cleaner. Respond plz!
Yep...easy on those sensors.
You cannot use non-conducting cleaner on the MAF sensor MAF sensor is a special sensor special cleaner in the cleaners made so that when you spray the sensor the cleaner has no residue at all Left Behind where some of these other cleaners will leave behind some residue or some lubrication because that's what their call for be very careful with some of these sensors expensive to fix
Brent Waterbury I
Reminds me of Carbon Tetracloride from back in the day. It does work good for cleaning the sensor for sure.
SO, the question is: Where did all the gum and dirt go?????
Burnt up Blown out the exhaust. Miniscule amounts.
I've cleaned 100's of TB's by just spraying them without taking them off never an Issue! Thanks for watching!
Why would you put a hole in your intake if you already disconnected the intake from the throttle body just spray it directly and wipe of the shit OMG
OMG...Some autos will not run with the air cleaner off. Got it??
@@FixingWithPassion that my be i still would just spray it directly and wipe of any crap left over. Not punch holes in my intake 😒
Will this clean the intake manifold runner ???? I have one stuck in the open position.
O no~
THANKS FOR THE VID...........BUT WHY DONT YOU JUST SPRAY IT IN THE P.V.C. HOSE AND IT WILL SUCK IT RIGHT IN ?
I'll do a video next on that!!~
Would have been better if you would have cleaned the throttle body with cleaner and a clean towel rather than suck in all the crud into the injectors then do what you demonstrated
@jim hamilton , if its going through the air intake how would it go near the injectors? i don't think your a Mechanic are you Jim?
Word! lol
TVWXMAN32, dumb question here, where does all that crud go anyway?
Mostly gets sucked into the engine and burnt up and blown out the exhaust. But its really not that much black crud to do any harm.
Awesome! Can your engine actually burn this stuff...i have the same bottle and this is pretty crazy but worth the trouble lol 2006 honda civic si owner...
Can you use Carb Cleaner on this or is that to harsh for the throttle body?
I have an old 95 del sol honda.
Throttle body cleaner for throttle body. Or you can use the SeaFoam spray and follow the instructions. Works the same way.
lean codes say what!!!!!!!!
that stuff just breaks up the carbon build up.... it does not disolve it. You basically just added a whole bunch of gunk to your engine oil. you should NOT do this!!!. I would do an oil change and run it about 50 miles and do another oil change to try to get the carbon out you just dumped in there and keep it from building up inside the engine!! This is a HORRIBLE idea!!! I am by no means a mechanic, it took me a half a day to watch a couple videos and take my throttle body off and cleaned it. not to mention there is a lot of carbon on the back side of that comes from the IAC valve ports.
True....But its such a Miniscule amount. 2/3 will get blown through the
exhaust. We are talking just a few ounce's. It's not like you dumping a
quart into the motor oil. Hell I bet the oil in most engines that need
intake's and Throttle body's cleaning really bad....all ready have
horrible oil in them... and need a oil change. Been doing this for 40 years....never a Issue...So Its not all doom and
gloom ;)
This is ok if you do it on a regular basis AFTER you do the complete cleaning(ie taking it off and doing it on the bench).
yes you are by no means a mechanic. Most of the fluid will burn up. a small reside in your oil. so if this concerns you , do the throttle body cleaning before an oil change.
jamesdriggers2011 I’m alan buckus1973@optonline.net for my Honda Accord 2009 ok with you like your help it would make me happy from New York
Good idea
It would possibly have helped if he told what the issue prompted this resolve. I am seeking to determine why my chevy van is having running, power, surging issues.
Low Idle, sometimes stalling. But this is not a always a cure as there are other sensors that tell the EMC how to run the engine. But having said that, its always a good place to start. And anyone can do this 'first step" in acquiring a issue of a poor idling stalling auto. Happy fixing!
thank you! works great!
I notice at 8 min 36 seconds your hose popped out under the intake and you didnt put it back in ???
I did.
@@FixingWithPassion good going
THANKS
Good vid, awesome misspelled at end.
Can i do that on a dodge ram 3500 2016
Alex Flores Don’t do that! Do it the right way, you’ll be glad you did!
Would that keep my ETC light from coming on every few hundred miles?
Probably not. You may other issues. Check for leaks etc.
thanks for this
Did you do a video cleaning your MAF sensor?
Yea back 20 videos I think.
Hello, I have 1997 dodge caravan 3.0l with a blown head gasket, I replaced the head gasket two days ago I also change the oil but still the color of oil look like coffee with too much milk, can you tell me what did I do wrong. Thank TVWXMAN32
Water is still getting the the motor. Something is leaking still, cracked head, block...etc.
Did you flush out all the antifreeze and flush your engine before the oil change
I'm sorry I just seen it was 4 months ago quite sure it's fixed sorry
having to watch an ad that I've seen many times before just to see you post kinda sucks.
Why not just clean the throttle body out by hand with a rag? Much more efficient and effective... Also your not sucking chemicals into your engine doing who knows what. You just wasted that whole bottle and only cleaned the outside of the butterfly.. I absolutely do not recommend doing this because you could potentially lock up your engine or maybe even set it on fire lol. Anything going past is just being sucked up and not thoroughly cleaning around the edges and walls, which is what's important. I recommend using a screw driver to prop open the butterfly, while using throttle body or MAF sensor cleaner the proper way and use a rag because the spray alone won't remove the deposits. Doing this will actually make a noticable difference. Just did it in my '99 expedition 5.4 liter engine and it brought it back to life! It was choking.
Mechanics take the cover off the throttle body and spray right into the throttle body. People think mechanics shops and stealerships take everything apart spend and hour or two cleaning and wipe it with clean clothes so the crap don't go in the throttle body. Big repair bills make people think he worked his butt off. HA
Too much people leaves the throttle body without any cleaning. Sadly, because it's a trivial job to do on most cars. Just done it on mine, by removing the throttle body from the intake and replacing its two gaskets. Now the plate is shiny and the little 1.2 has a faster response and a clockwork idle. No calibration problems at all.
Did this on my rough idle tacoma but thru the brake booster hoes that conects be hind the trotyle plate car runs lik a top now i need to seafoam it 20000k with new engine
Nice. If some people only understood some "tricks" to cleaning like you do. ;)
Was the MAP sensor just beyond the throttle body? mine is ..will the spray affect it you think?
Should be ok.
Great video, thanks.
Wow throttle body looks clean now but...
-where the dirt goes?
-Inside the engine of course.
-OMG that shouldn't be there!!! I want to clean it out the throttle not clean it in.
No. Just no. You already took off the intake. You would have gotten the same results or maybe better by just using a rag and would have used a fraction of the can. Your method isn't easier just lazier.
Am I the only one that shoots the throttle body the butterfly still dirty supposed to be spreading it real good without the air cleaner and wipe it and then spread when he's fired up for it really looks like it's brand new
Lovely content! Keep it up!
WTF? Scotty Kilmer is going to kick your ass for this
Nice!
WAIT!!!! do i do it that way or not?
that's about the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. why not just loosen clamp and stick the straw in there and spray.lol
the car will stall
You should put this cleaner inside gas tank and every think will be clean. lol
Sold!~~
Where do that do at !!!!
..That is a Good Idea Nathan!! I'm gonna do that to my vehicles. It's a Sure enuff time saver...!!
IS this car running anymore? lol
Yep! Runs perfect still!
good
Rumor has it, he still cant figure out why he's getting a lean code on both banks :) Just remove your throttle body and use a toothbrush with the cleaner folks. Good time to clean the MAF as well. Only use that CRC stuff he showed. It will be done right and look brand new.
knock a hole in the hose you can just tape it up after?? This is one of them guys who believes he knows a lot about different things mean while goes around giving everybody misinformation because of his own ignorance real dangerous person to be on UA-cam really. Everything this guy says should not be taken as right. Just do it right or take it to mechanic.
Ppl plz don't do what this man did
Tell us more!
perfect, thank you!
NO! NO! NO! NO!
Wow never seen anyone do it while runing i hered this is realy bad. But i dono guess it worked for you. I personly am cleaning mine tomorrow and will not be doing this lol and a hole can lol shit man
or @4:02 just clean it….
Before and after....
Check out the video
Called you should sit down and p
Just unscrew the plastic! Your making it complicated!!!
You are being lazy, why didn't you just remove the throttle body and clean it completly. Why are you putting holes in the plastic? Removing the intake is so easy and the right way to do it.
Fishing?
Cowboy.
Or just add Berryman B-12 Chemtool to the gas tank😊
Fuel doesnt touch the throttle body unfortunately. Tank additives only clean where fuel goes so your fuel line, filter, injectors, top of pistons and intake valves. Lucas fuel additive is best, it lubricrates the upper cylinder as well
wtf he is worse than me!!!!
that's about the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. why not just loosen clamp and stick the straw in there and spray.lol
