Scotty great video as usual. Here is the thing. I have similar problem with my ‘02 Mitsubishi Montero 3,5 v6. I have replaced several sensors and changed almos all lines of vacuum and still have some troubles at low speed in load conditions. I have a lot of suspects on the MAF sensor so I got a can of CRC MAF cleaner but the can says it is not good for Karman Vortex MAF Sensor as used on Lexus and some Mitsubishi’s. I have a 1990 Buick LeSabre Limited with OBD-I and learned the transmission system cooks the fluid! My half brother got me this and a 2002 Explorer.. A nasty storm contributed to wrecking the Explorer, as I want to time travel to stop myself from driving home and power napping! The Buick ran great, till I put Seafoam in the tank, then the transmission fluid was foaming!
Dealers screw us anyways and I don’t trust them. I need to find a used 3.3 liter inline 6 for a vintage 1982 Ford Granada or a used 3.8 liter V6, or used 302 v8.

I had cylinder misfires the same month I had to get the emissions test. Went to the mechanic and he wanted to do an $800 tune up! I didn't think I wanted to keep the car, but took a gamble and added some fuel injector cleaner to a tank of gas and cleared the check engine light. Drove it gently for a couple days to work the fluid through and then drove normally. NO MISFIRES, no codes, passed emissions. That was almost 2 years ago...kept the car :)
Gosh I wish I had u in my 20's when seriously wanted to study mechanics ....and I thought...these mechanics don't know nothing now I found u and it makes all perfect sense to me...👍☺ finally pure knowledge!
I discovered this cleaner before finding your video. I can confirm it made a HUGE difference in our 1992 Pathfinder; cleaning the MAF even resolved the dreaded "Nissan engine surge".
The MAS Sensor in a lot of European made 4 cyl cars can also effect the auto transmission causing it to not shift down when accelerating or starting off. As a result, lots of these cars end up at the Wrecking Yards as owners think the transmission is worn out. A clean MAS also makes a big difference in Toyota V6 & 4 cyl engines. Great instructional video Scotty, this should help a lot of people. Thank you. 👍🇦🇺.
@@Veery_liveMAS makes more sense Mass Airflow Sensor MAS versus MAF Mass air flow sensor so really depending on if you view airflow as one word or two it’s actually MAS vs MAFS
Fixed my daughter's F150 by doing that same thing. It was stalling out every time she stopped. All I did was clean the MAF sensor. Fixed. Thanks, Scotty, again.
wow after 4 years of driving with the traction control and abs codes that 3 shops couldnt fix, this fixed the problem! Scotty is the man and a friggin legend, thank you!
My 2001 Toyota tundra 3.4 6cyl pulled 2 codes, upper back 02 and trans code, the torque converter is incorporated in the emissions system, I learned that it all starts at the air filter and ended at the tailpipe, a problem is usually caused by something in front, I checked the air filter all good, pulled the mass air flow sensor it was dirty, cleaned it, two days later no more codes😎
I was always intimidated by ANYTHING mechanical. Since I found Scotty and others on UA-cam, I've become a fearless DIY'ER. Having said that, however, I recognize my limitations.
Love these new videos of you doing actual work on random, real-world problems. As an example, you've previously told us about the MAF cleaner in one of your older videos, but now we see you actually using the stuff. It's little things like this that help the new people to mechanics.
Great video Scotty. I have about 20 cars in our work fleet that I oversee, and I appreciate these little tips so I can do what I can and only send them to the garage when I have to. (the contractor we use is a great man though, just he has so much he's doing already when I can do it myself I always try. ) Helps me save the big stuff for him and I can tackle more if the small stuff 👍
BMW dealership service would charge $100 for a "pre-diagnosis" then charge over $350 to spray the MAF clean. From what you did, this should cost me about $10 to do it myself, actually. It also helps NOT to use those oily K&N filters that will get gunk on your MAF sensors. Live and learn! You're awesome, Scotty! Thanks!
I always assumed K&N was the best. I'll have to relearn. Just found a mouse nest in my air box. So, either the mice, or the filter gave the mAF an issue.
You are my favorite go-to for vehicle information. Thank you for bestowing knowledge upon the general public of do-it-yourselfers. You're the best Scotty!
I had a 1999 Tacoma Prerunner V6 from new until 2017. Great vehicle, probably the best vehicle I ever owned. I needed something to flat tow behind our motorhome. No Toyotas were flat towable, so I got an F-150 V8. I used to get a P0171 or P0170 code on it periodically, It was the MAF sensor. I used carb cleaner (don't yell at me) & it was good for another few months to a couple years.
It is amazing how much knowledge it takes to fix these cars correctly. It really requires a lot of intelligence and experience and the skill of a detective.
Yeah and people want to whine when we give them the bill because you know all you have to do is you tube it and do it yourself for free....lol......good luck with that and then they find out oh it's not so easy.

MAF and MAP sensors are always worth a look. Have a diesel e60 bmw that was hesitating on acceleration. Like an injector problem. Took out these two sensors. MAP was choked with soot. Replaced them both and car back to normal.

Best Scotty vid I’ve seen so far. This one is particularly relevant to me, and I think it might save me $120. Even if it’s just a short-term fix, at least it will confirm if the problem is the MAF sensor or not.
@Scotty Kilmer Greetings from Germany! Dear Scotty. On my 97 Ford Thunderbird 4.6 V8, the check engine light (P0171 & P0174) was on 2 years ago. I also cleaned the airflow sensor and all the codes were gone too. Just like you said in this video. I fixed it on my own! Ps .: My garage couldn't even find the reason why the engine control light was on, even though an American Ford engine specialist happened to be there! So I learned many things on cars and motors by myself. I allways wanted to be a car mechanic, but there was no free vacancy at that time, so I became an electrical motorbuilder.
@@maximusareilius2262 No it isn't, it's exactly what he said it is, The average person these days have no clue how their car works, that's why it's easy to talk them into doing repairs they don't need, I replaced all four struts on my neighbors car last August then took it to a guy I know who has been doing alignments all his life, she takes it to a local mechanic for something else and he tells her she needs struts and an alignment, he claimed she needed lower control arms and charged her 800.00 on a 2009 Toyota Corolla, they only cost like 100 for a pair if that unless you buy oem, I don't know why she didn't come to me first but he really fleeced her, the worst part is that I know the guy, he's been there since the 80s, but his prices are outrageous.
I want to thank you for all the repairs we(mechanics)will be getting from this video to replace Mass air flow sensor because not everyone should work on their car.
I love when things just have non descript "Warning" lights. Always makes me chuckle. It's even better when the manual has broken English and just gives an explanation for the code with something like "Problem with mechanical operation". 😂 You gotta just laugh so it doesn't drive you insane. Scotty, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You've kept your humor and your joy, and that's hard to do when it comes to fixing things for so long, especially when they're poorly engineered to begin with. 🤭
I cleaned my MAP & MAF sensors and the next day i blew my charge pipe. So cleaning these sensors definitely helps engine performance its not a myth. Plus this genius of a man recommended it so you know it has to work. I LEARNED ALOT FROM YOUR CHANNEL WHICH HELPED ME IMMENSELY... THANK YOU SCOTTY......
wow just cleaning the mass sensor fixed all those codes! IMPRESIVE! thank you for your valuable info to help us fix our own vehicles and save us tons of money!

I always run one through when I get a car. Then every oil change as a tune up. My favorite is gumout or Chevron techron
Cool. which injector cleaner brand was it? I heard Lucas is good.
Remember to record your freeze frame data before clearing the codes. You might erase valuable troubleshooting data!
Gosh I wish I had u in my 20's when seriously wanted to study mechanics ....and I thought...these mechanics don't know nothing now I found u and it makes all perfect sense to me...👍☺ finally pure knowledge!
Learned something new today ! Love the videos !
Thank you. 👍🇦🇺.
It's not Mas sensor it's maf sensor
@@Veery_liveMAS makes more sense Mass Airflow Sensor MAS versus MAF Mass air flow sensor so really depending on if you view airflow as one word or two it’s actually MAS vs MAFS
@Michael-vm8kj no sir. Doesn't make a difference what it sounds like. Mechanically it's called a maf. Sensor.
Fixed my daughter's F150 by doing that same thing. It was stalling out every time she stopped. All I did was clean the MAF sensor. Fixed. Thanks, Scotty, again.
fideau one thanks for info. My wife’s cobalt chevy does same exact thing at 60k miles I’m about to clean MAF sensor👍🏻
wow after 4 years of driving with the traction control and abs codes that 3 shops couldnt fix, this fixed the problem!
Scotty is the man and a friggin legend, thank you!
Thanks for the great tips 😃
And this is why Scotty has 2.1M subs! I love learning your thought process too, thanks man!
Congratulations on 2M subs, best to you in the future scotty!
Scotty you’re a living legend. Love your passion, it’s contagious.
My 2001 Toyota tundra 3.4 6cyl pulled 2 codes, upper back 02 and trans code, the torque converter is incorporated in the emissions system,
I learned that it all starts at the air filter and ended at the tailpipe, a problem is usually caused by something in front, I checked the air filter all good, pulled the mass air flow sensor it was dirty, cleaned it, two days later no more codes😎
Thank You , Scotty … Thank The LORD , for Your extremely valued auto expertise !
I'm so glad I found your channel! You give honest advice that we need. Thank you Scotty.
Scotty what a great service you do for all of us DIYers, thank you!
Yes...
I was always intimidated by ANYTHING mechanical. Since I found Scotty and others on UA-cam, I've become a fearless DIY'ER. Having said that, however, I recognize my limitations.
nah, there are no limitations, gearbox rebuild? easy, enginge rebuild? easy peasy, just like changing oil and filter@@davidweum
Love these new videos of you doing actual work on random, real-world problems. As an example, you've previously told us about the MAF cleaner in one of your older videos, but now we see you actually using the stuff. It's little things like this that help the new people to mechanics.
You can't get any more Honest. Great Service. its sad how many are not Honest.
He takes care of the big stuff and you the little stuff, huh? Hahaha
Thanks!
Don't forget billing for a replacement MAF sensor but replacement with the cleaned old one.
I always assumed K&N was the best.
I'll have to relearn.
Just found a mouse nest in my air box.
So, either the mice, or the filter gave the mAF an issue.
You have to clean the k&n filter every 6 months
5 yrs later, it's now $250
Anyone in GA know a mechanic like Scotty? Jeez his work is amazing

First car video iv seem that's helfull. I like this guy
Scotty thank you for all the great videos ! You have pulled me out of so many binds and saved me a ton of money and make me laugh all the time !
Your customers are Bless to have you😁. Great work man😎👌🏿
One of your best videos! I’ve always cleaned MAFs as part of routine maintenance on all of my vehicles!
My type of no nonsense mechanic! Love you Scotty!
Best mechanic in America and on youtube. Thank you Scotty for all you do.
Best mechanic on UA-cam??? 🤣🤣🤣

I love the simplicity & style. Very easy to follow & understand! Truly your experience precedes you! Thank you scotty for always been true!
My mechanic Dad that I never had.
Thanks Scotty for everything.
Please sir, what should I do to correct a MAF sensor 5 wires that has no power but all 3 ground?
I had a 1999 Tacoma Prerunner V6 from new until 2017. Great vehicle, probably the best vehicle I ever owned. I needed something to flat tow behind our motorhome. No Toyotas were flat towable, so I got an F-150 V8.
I used to get a P0171 or P0170 code on it periodically, It was the MAF sensor. I used carb cleaner (don't yell at me) & it was good for another few months to a couple years.
This is something I've been missing lately. Amazing job Scotty! Thank you for this video.
Me too. Sadly videos like these are rare nowadays
Scotty being truth and honest ever
It is amazing how much knowledge it takes to fix these cars correctly. It really requires a lot of intelligence and experience and the skill of a detective.
Yeah and people want to whine when we give them the bill because you know all you have to do is you tube it and do it yourself for free....lol......good luck with that and then they find out oh it's not so easy.
@@kkmart43 mechanics generally charge way too much for repair especially if you take it into a shop(b/c of overhead costs) / I don't mind paying a reasonable rate which I usually get through mobile mechanics
Kaunus88. Thank you from all mechanics, ppl call us grease monkeys and much worse think we rip EVERYBODY off and generally look down thier noses at us ahhh, but when the car won't go ,,well, you know , thanks again
@@amaxlite what's to much? do you have any idea what it takes to fix modern cars, we go to schools yearly usually to learn new systems, have you bought any quality tools lately ? I personally have more than 100000 bucks in tools alone, how many professions require that kind of investment just to be able to do your job, shut up and thank and tip the guy that fixes your car next time you don't have a clue why it won't go

*Thanks Scotty. You’re making me save a lot of money 💰 *
Who's the 6 dorks that gave thumbs down? Scotty's the man-chanic , if he cant fix it no one can. Thanks Scotty for this informative video
Trolls that would charge a gang of money to pull codes, clean the MAF Sensor, clear the codes and probably never even drive it.
You would be amazed just how much of a problem a mass air flow sensor can cause, thanks for the tip scotty keep being honest because your stocks on respect will rise steadily!!😎👍
This guy is so cool man...Great mechanic, Great videos.
MAF and MAP sensors are always worth a look. Have a diesel e60 bmw that was hesitating on acceleration. Like an injector problem. Took out these two sensors. MAP was choked with soot. Replaced them both and car back to normal.
i wish there were more scotty’s because of him we know cars better how they work ,,,,thank you scotty.. salut..Kurdish boy living in the Netherlands.👍👍👍😎😎
Been awhile since I watched in a video...the amount of views you have now is insane. Congratulations for real
Got to love a man that will always tell you the truth!!! Long live Scotty!!!
Knowing how to fix things you use everyday tends to save you a lot of $. It's astounding how many people don't even check their oil.
Best Scotty vid I’ve seen so far. This one is particularly relevant to me, and I think it might save me $120. Even if it’s just a short-term fix, at least it will confirm if the problem is the MAF sensor or not.
Scotty you are the man.
Scotty you always come in clutch. I think you just helped me with my mom’s GX 460!
I really loved this video, Scotty! You showed us exactly what to do! You’re a fantastic teacher!!!! Thank you from the entire world!!!!
Good mechanics remind me of good chefs because they are both kind of nutty, and you are no exception. I am subscribing.

It's technically useless, well that is my opinion
You gotta just laugh so it doesn't drive you insane.
Scotty, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You've kept your humor and your joy, and that's hard to do when it comes to fixing things for so long, especially when they're poorly engineered to begin with. 🤭
I really enjoy this type of video Mr Kilmer. Very informative, I might go and clean my MAF sensor as preventative maintenance.
Now that's one of the most helpful easy fixes. You ROCK
I hope a simple THANK YOU will do Mr Scotty!!!
Thanks for all your help and I love that you don't curse while on video. Simple enough but that makes all the difference for me.
I need to find a mechanic as honest, thorough and knowledgeable as you in Sydney.
if you can't find mass airflow sensor cleaner, you can also use electronic contact cleaner, work the same, perhaps even cheaper.
Electronic contact cleaner usually leaves a lubricating residue to make slide on connections work better and easier.
Your knowledge of cars is amazing Scotty!

Ah, the *Lexus LS430 Ultra Luxury Package* I see that's a man of culture.
